Our Song (Queen Rare Pair Weekend 2022)
Rating: G
Genre: Fluff
Ship: Freddie Mercury/Elton John
Word count: 1,101
Prompt: Queerplatonic
Summary: Freddie and Elton had a relationship that the two of them could never quite define. But the more they thought about it, the more they realized putting a label on it would never be able to illustrate just how much they cared for each other.
--
Here's a fic I wrote for @queenrarepair !! I've been wanting to write a Frelton fic for sooo long now, and I finally had an excuse to do it 😁 I personally headcannon Freddie and Elton as Queerplatonic partners, and so I wanted to explore that a bit in this fic~
The full fic is under the cut, and you can also read this fic on my AO3!!
I appreciate any and all support you give. Thank you 🥰
Freddie picked at his chipped black nail polish and settled against the pillows surrounding him. Today had been a long day, and he couldn't wait to turn off the lamp and drift off into a deep sleep. He yawned and stretched his arms above his head, squeezing his eyes shut as he did so.
"Don't get too comfy without me," Came Elton's gentle voice from the doorway as he stepped out of his fuzzy cream colored slippers.
Freddie opened his eyes and grinned at him, "I'd never do that, dear," he scooted over just a bit to make room for Elton and patted the space beside him, "Come now, it's nice and warm just for you~"
Elton wasted no time strolling over to the bed and nestling into the sheets next to Freddie. He removed his bedazzled spectacles and set them on the bedside table, and pulled the metal chain on the lamp to turn it off with a soft click.
Freddie fluffed up one of his and Elton's many pillows before they both lied down together to ensure they'd both have maximum comfort tonight. They both deserved a much needed rest.
The room was dark, with only the moon peering through the curtains as the single source of light. It was a cold rainy night, but it was peaceful. The soft sound of raindrops pitter-pattering on the window, the heater creating a droning but oddly comforting sound, and just one another's presence was enough for Freddie and Elton.
"How was your day today?" Freddie asked in a quiet tone as he stroked Elton's cheek with the back of his hand, giving him a sleepy grin.
Elton shrugged, "Oh, you know… Just recording a new album. What every average person does," he bragged in a joking manner, making Freddie chuckle.
"What's that one song again?" Freddie looked up at the ceiling for a brief moment as he tried to recall some of the lyrics, "…'I'm not one of those who can easily hide'…?"
Elton smiled and quietly sang, "'I don't have much money, but boy if I did'…"
Freddie mirrored his expression as they both harmonized, "'I'd buy a big house where, we both could live.' "
"You remembered that?" Elton asked, "I only sang it for you once, I think."
"Of course I remembered, why wouldn't I?" Freddie asked. "A song as beautiful as that could've only come from someone as equally so."
Elton chuckled and his cheeks reddened slightly, "If by 'beautiful' you mean an utter mess, then yes."
Elton gently rolled over onto his back and stared at the textured ceiling, and Freddie shifted against his pillows to get a little cozier. A comfortable silence fell between the two men as they listened to the rain, and one another's steady breathing.
"I wrote that song about you," Elton said quietly.
Freddie's eyes shot up to meet Elton's profile. From what he could tell, Elton was completely serious, not even a hint of a smirk or a teasing grin could be seen.
"Did you really?" Freddie asked as he propped himself up with one arm. His lips were parted as if he were ready to speak again, but the words wouldn't come out, and he instead waited to hear his friend's answer.
Elton grinned sheepishly, "Well, I had some help from Bernie, of course," he rolled back over on his side to face Freddie, the expression on his face now turning into one of worry, "Is… Is it too much?"
Freddie shook his head, "No, not at all, I just… I never imagined having a song written about me," he gave Elton a reassuring smile, "It's wonderful, dear."
Hearing Freddie's words helped ease Elton's apprehension, but he still felt the need to explain himself. He averted his eyes to stare at the loose threads of the duvet as he spoke, "I really value our relationship, Freddie. I've wanted to tell you for a while now, but I just could never seem to find the right words. We live in the same flat, we wash each other's clothes, we eat dinner together… Hell, look at us right now," Elton gestured to the room, "We even share a bed!"
"For anyone who didn't know any better, they'd say we're lovers," Freddie commented with a chuckle.
"Right…" Elton bit the inside of his cheek, "I just want to be able to share these things with you without having a label attached," he turned his attention back to Freddie, "Does that make sense?"
Freddie nodded, "I feel the same way, darling. We love each other, and we don't need to define that love for anyone else. We've got something special."
Elton's heart swelled with joy, and he couldn't wipe the grin he had off of his face if he wanted to. Freddie knew exactly what he meant and how he felt, and it was one of the many things Elton loved so much about him. He sat up and pulled Freddie into a tight hug, and Freddie wrapped his arms around him affectionately.
"I love you. So, so much," Elton mumbled against the skin of Freddie's neck, "I'm lucky to have you in my life."
Freddie felt his eyes well up with tears. He wished he could let the whole world hear just how loudly his heart sang in this moment.
"I love you too, Elton~" Freddie whispered. He pulled away from Elton and placed a finger underneath his chin to gently tilt his head up, and they both gazed into each other's eyes, "You're more precious to me than any diamond I've ever worn. And I've yet to find another gem that brings me as much joy as you do."
Now it was Elton's turn to tear up. He leaned forward and gently kissed the bridge of Freddie's nose, "You're wonderful. Perhaps you'll write a song about me one day, yeah?" he said with a playful laugh.
"You can count on it," Freddie reassured as he used his thumb to wipe away a stray tear from Elton's cheek. "Now let's get some rest." Freddie settled back down into the sheets and outstretched his arms, and Elton happily joined him to snuggle up in his embrace.
As the pair held one another and listened to the rain outside, they both felt especially comfortable tonight. They had always been open about their feelings, but something about this night in particular seemed to strengthen their relationship. And what ever that something was, it only made them both feel more confident in not needing any labels; Freddie and Elton would still love each other no matter what.
