Today's book haul (and a rare DVD haul!)

All horror, because I was hanging out with my friend who loves horror and she inspired me. Was going to rent Slewfoot from the library, but then I discovered it has ✨ illustrations ✨ Reluctant Immortals was an impulse buy, I think it was recommended on one of the podcasts I listen to but I can't quite remember. What Feasts at Night needs no explanation.

Also got some DVDs for once! Trying to slowly expand my physical media collection so I don't rely on streaming services as much. Got Nope since it's a favourite and I'm tired of paying to rent it, and the Cloverfield trilogy since Horror Virgin covered the first movie recently and I want to rewatch it and finally see the sequels. I hear the first two are excellent and the third is absolutely bonkers.

started The Two Towers while at the vet with my friend, and let me tell you, sitting in a waiting room full of dogs while reading Boromir's death scene really takes the edge off.

FINISHED FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING!

That only took almost a full month. Started it March 20th and it's April 16th now. At one point I made a silly goal to finish the series by May long weekend so I can do a movie marathon then, but it seems like it might actually be a challenge.

#thinking about reading #going to make a goal to finish the other two books in two weeks each #so I'll have the series done in a month at most #im enjoying this reread but also there are many other things I'd like to read...

Walked up to the bookstore near my office today. Found The Familiar, but couldn't find The Age of Magical Overthinking, though their website said it was in stock. Ah well, I assume it hasn't been shelved yet, and to be fair most people don't come in the day after release day looking for psychology books.

hmmm, just realized 2 highly anticipated books (The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo and The Age of Magical Overthinking by Amanda Montell) both come out next week, and I may have to treat myself to a bookstore trip...

#have to get a cavity filled and 2 old fillings replaced next friday so i might pre-emptively treat myself #and go to the bookstore near my office sometime... #been doing really good about not overspending so obviously i deserve a little treat #thinking about reading

I went to the library to borrow some DVDs we're planning to watch, but when I handed the librarian my card, it took me a solid 15 seconds to register that I handed her my fucking weed card.

Me, fumbling to swap it out: "OH MY GOD, I AM SO SORRY, I was on total autopilot!!"

The librarian: "It's all good, I just assumed it was a flex."

Okay im (lowkey) back from my social media vacation. Unclear how much I will post here yet, because I've become fairly disenchanted with various book-fandoms and their dramas recently lol, but I will at least try and keep this blog updated with what I'm currently reading.

Anyway, in the past 3 weeks I read:

Homesick for Another World by Ottessa Moshfegh, which is very weird and off-putting, with most of the main characters being, at best, assholes. I do think it's a good read, though. The theme of most of the stories seems to be "MC loses their perfect life because they can't get out of their own destructive cycles" or "MC loses what they think will give them the perfect life but instead gains the knowledge of what is really important, unfortunately it is too late."

Reread the Unicorn series by Vicki Blum as a palate cleanser after that book + The Stranger Beside Me. Those are childhood favourites and are always a nice "reset."

Also finished Princess Jellyfish, which is a wonderful and adorable series. There's a pretty funny twist around vol 6, and I felt like vol 9 wrapped things up a little too fast, but overall it's a great read.

Then my hold for Please Kill Me: The Unauthorized Oral History of Punk finally came up. An extremely interesting, weird, delightful, off-putting, horrifying, and sad read lol. All the emotions! Highly recommend even if you're not into punk music since it's a good look at history and the culture of 60s-80s New York as well. I recommend pairing it with the No Dogs in Space podcast's series about punk.

Now I'm reading The Mermaid's Secret by Vicki Blum, and next I'll read The Dragon Prince to cap off my rereads of her books. After that I'm hoping to start an LoTR reread.

So that's...16 books in 3 weeks without tumblr. If I want my teenage reading speed back I guess I should just quit social media 😅

decided to take a little tumblr vacation, so I won't be posting here for a bit (unclear how long but I think I'm going to try for a month just to really get the cobwebs out of my brain. if you want to keep up with me somewhere else, I'm on ig at sixofravensreads and I'm gonna try and post there more regularly lol.

#just need a break from this site every now and again. and it's been 3.5 years since my last one #the problem with tumblr is i find it can get kinda culty and crab-pot-y if you don't step back and re-evaluate how you use it every so ofte #ANYWAY ig is still my happy place sooo join me there for some bookish content and maybe other stuff idk #or maybe nothing bc i'll forget to post lol
