Man I'm full of opinions lately haha.
But I think tbh a lot of people who complain about this are probably actually slightly off the mark with where their frustrations lie?
I think what people MEAN when they say this is that it's frustrating to see the algorithm pushing artists who might otherwise be making good/longer/better/etc art are instead being pushed to fit those algorithms, and caving ( which is NOT to blame them for doing so! Artists gotta make a living. And sometimes, that means sacrificing the art. Take it from someone who has drawn anime catgirls with big tits far more than dragons, which they would rather be drawing ).
But it CAN be frustrating to find something that's just shy of what it could be, which is what I find to be the case with a lot of things of late. Books that are good in theory, but needed another pass or two from an editor, music that's a bop but so short you can barely enjoy it before it's over, etc etc. (tho those of us who like soundtrack music knew the latter pain all too well before this became the norm haha ).
Anyway, I could be way off the mark, but I think that people are maybe more frustrated with the ALMOST of it all than they say or realise.
not to be pretentious, but a lot of stuff you guys complain is being ruined by capitalism/the algorithm/whatever can be solved by consuming something else than the most basic mainstream stuff that's thrown in your lap. "songs nowadays are getting shorter to fit entire tiktoks and it's ruining music" have you tried listening to something else than Spotify's Top 100 my dude? "fanfiction-to-publishing pipeline is churning out mediocre books and it's ruining literature" have you tried reading something outside the NYT bestseller list my dude? This is not a post about how algorithm based industries give visibility to the lowest common denominator art at the expense of actually creative and meaningful art that struggles to make itself known, which is a valid discussion for another time, this is about people actively not giving this kind of art their visibility because they won't get out of their way to discover stuff outside the mainstream radar and prefer to be passively fed what to consume while bitching that is not up to their tastes.

Do you ever forget that you have a gender to most people….. meaning that random people at the grocery store see me as a woman and not just a little internet guy

Disability flavoured rantings under the cut
How is it that in a year I went from being pretty physically capable, bit of a gym rat, energetic, etc, to paying an energy tax for a short day out, and starting to think of a cane as a serious long term aid (that I'm still kinda scared to use outside the house/even in the house when the people I live with can see me because they're much older than me, and I LOOK young and and and-- )
Like I've always had small joint issues from early arthritis, and a hip that rolls out of place, sure, but I used to be able to bounce back. I used to be able to run and walk distances easily! I enjoyed it! I've always had to be careful about certain kinds of energy expenditure bc I'm autistic and certain things take a bigger toll on me than most people, but like- it's so so much worse now?
And I'm not old enough now that age is a reason on its own- yeah, I'm ALMOST 30, and my body should be starting to slow down, but it's like I went from 25 to 65 in 3 years. Yesterday I went to a couple locations, barely walked, didn't even do the driving myself, and still slept almost twice as long as normal and still took several hours to scrounge enough energy to get out of bed! And this isn't like- brain fog depression or anything, that happens too and is a separate experience. This is literally my body does not have the energy reserves to sit up and reach for my water bottle on the bedside, so I will lay here with a dry mouth for an hour instead, and when I finally managed that, I needed another thirty minutes to recover.
It's fucking absurd. And it feels like people believe how bad it is even less BECAUSE just a year ago I was doing so well. I dream about being at the gym lifting sometimes and wake up crying. I hate this so much. I just want my life back, and barring that I just want someone to really fucking recognise how bad and scary this is, and not dismiss me because I don't have a "3" in the 10s digit of my age yet.
Between a doctor who at least half cares and friends who have chronic illnesses, at least I can get crumbs here and there that hint at what's wrong, but nothing forms a complete explanation for how, in the span of a fucking year, I went from that to this. And even worse, nothing forms an answer as if how or even IF I can ever have my life back.

So like bc I've actually thought about this recently, it was like... A lot easier to be a non present observer of things. A "ghost" viewer, of you will.
That is to say, you didn't need to have an account to view things on a site. I was an avid follower of a lot of artists on this now defunct site called Elfwood(not nsfw, just used here as an example) but never once did I make an account. I was young(10/11), and had no reason yet to disbelieve my anti-internet family when they told me that making an account on any website but neopets was a guaranteed way to get picked up by a creepy guy in a white van.
So I just... Went to their pages and browsed their art. And nsfw art I viewed was much the same. I went, I looked, there was no record I was there except probably my IP address in back end stuff. Even when I did start making accounts, I lied about my age(less to view adult content and more to throw people off from my identity, however poorly that might've worked), and I often just... Didn't directly engage. I think this is kind of what Denizens Of The Internet expected kids to do, and realistically it's how I interpret "minors DNI"- the Internet's version of "leave no trace".
But this is fucking unheard of today.
Websites require accounts to view even the most innocuous content, engagement is the name of the game, people are expected to put their full name out there, etc etc etc. so it's really hard for minors who grew up in this environment to understand that mindset.
(and I'm sure the fully anti-sex attitudes a lot of them have been raised under don't help, but that's a totally different matter)
Anyway, point is: minors DNI PROBABLY doesn't mean minors aren't looking(or technically that they CAN'T). It just means that the ones who are looking aren't leaving traces that they've done so- which is good for both them & the creator/provider of that adult content, since the minor could get in trouble with family/etc for viewing it, and the creator can get in trouble for providing it, despite precautions taken, because the culture IS so anti-sex rn.
additional comment from the anon: this mostly applies to things like smut or nsfw art. I see a lot of blogs that are 18+ and I’ve always wondered if people actually listen to "minors dni (do not interact)" or if they just ignore them.

Being friends with me is not unlike being friends with a crow.
Namely in that if usually starts with a gesture of kindness and then suddenly there's this creature dropping shiny things it things you'll like on your doorstep.

It means a lot to me that when people send heart emojis, they have a specific color/style they use. And heart they choose to use seems to really reflect that persons personality and how they love.
Actually, do me a favor. Reblog this with the hearts you typically use.

Potentially dumb question for my fellow artists:
Do you have anything that makes Posting The Art (not making it, the process of opening oen or more social medias, uploading the image, writing a description, adding tags, CHOOSING tags, etc) easier???
Literally I have a huge backlog of art I've MADE and then just... Never posted because that whole process is so exhausting.

Ok so like as a person with some physical disabilities/chronic pain theoretically finding out I'm a robot would mean I COULD fix whatever wiring is wrong and causing me pain. I'm like fully into the utopian idea of being an android tbqh.
