Novation Circuit Rhythm
This thing saved me so many times. I ended up loading up samples from the J-6 so I could play two synth lines at once. I also programmed all of the Rocket’s bass lines on it, thanks to its ability to send MIDI notes out. It even acted like a MIDI splitter so I could send the tempo information from the drum machine to the FX.
While the pads look a bit intimidating, it didn’t take long for me figure out my way around it and get what I needed done. The pads change color and make it really clear what’s going on and what’s being configured. Also, loading the samples is supper easy, as long as you don’t mind using Google Chrome.

Roland AIRA J-6
While not the most flexible device, this was still pretty handy. It’s all of the pads, arpeggios and “thin” leads on the EP. You can select a preset sound and do a little tweaking on it, but there’s not much else to adjust. Which means you can’t screw it up too bad.
While the device has a sequencer, I didn’t use it. The sequencer isn’t really conducive to playing lead lines, with different rhythms. It’s more for playing a chord over a bar or a preset arpeggio. Also, there were some times I wanted two sounds at the same time. So this required some workarounds.
I ended up recording the J-6 into Studio One, adding some light EQ in the process. Then, I exported the recording into a sampler to play it back during the performance. I used some of the sampler’s FX to add delay and reverb to the sample, if needed.

Arturia DrumBrute
This thing is really quirky. My particular unit has a wonky tempo knob. As long as I turn it very, very, very, slowly, it works fine. But if I only turn it very slowly, the tempo jumps to 30 BPM and I have to start all over. Fortunately, the tap tempo button works fine, so I just get it in the ballpark and adjust very, very, very slowly from there.
My favorite thing is that all of the sounds have individual output ports, so you can use a different effect on each of them. It’s not a revolutionary feature, but it’s surprisingly rare these days. Mostly, I break out the snare and the kick drums for processing and leave everything else through the main buss.

Waldorf Rocket
I think it’s pronounced “Valdorf”, since they’re from Germany. This is probably the easiest synth to use, outside of using a preset or a sample. If I didn’t like what I was hearing, I just adjusted one or two knobs and it was fine. Amazingly fast to set up and use, and you can even save sounds by using the MIDI output.
I didn’t even have to use any FX on this to make it sound really gnarly. Generally, setting the filter and resonance got it nasty enough. And if that didn’t do it, I just flicked the “Boost” switch and all was well.

The Recorder

JVC TD-W803
I paid $55 on eBay and picked it up in a Starbucks’ parking lot. The seller even included a tape (I didn’t use it for the EP; I got another one).
I looked at getting one of those vintage Tascam PortaStudios, but they’re at least $200 for a bottom-of-the-line model that’s still working. I’m not that silly, so I figured I’d just try using a mixer in front of a regular recorder.
One handy feature: the “scan” functionality that skips to the next song, greatly speeding up the transfer process. Also handy: I found a service manual, so I can hopefully get it repaired when it breaks.

Announcing The Rat Cellar Tape by Ethanol Owl!
I’ve made a deliberately lo-fi electronic EP, performed live and recorded straight to a cassette tape! It's available for free streaming on BandCamp or pay-what-you-like downloads. You’ll also be able to stream it on your service of choice on May 3, 2024, and can pre-save using this link.
In the coming weeks, I’ll be posting some photos and thoughts from the recording process. Follow me here to see what went into making this EP.
Looking forward to sharing the fun I had making this!
