So tired of sometimes I'll be sitting around and something will remind of the disaster of c!Tommy's dsmp finale and I just think about how easy it would have been to fix it. Everything today, with the time of year, has reminded me of it and now I can't get it out of my head.
Like, they could have had him plan to leave. Have him either decide to go after Wilbur, not because he needs Wilbur, but because he understand why Wilbur needed to get out of there. Like if you weren't going to kill the antagonist of the series, which means Tommy would never know peace, then free Tommy at least. Break the c!Crime cycle too of Tommy following Wilbur because that's just what it does and change it up to he's not following, they're just ending up in the same place because it's something Tommy wants.
Or they should have killed the bad guy. Ideally. And end with Tommy finally building a home that's not out of dirt. Have him write a letter to Wilbur saying he gets why Wilbur needed to leave to show he's now longer in that frenzied depression over it. Have him and Tubbo become settled and happy without that looming threat of harm to them or someone they care about. But we know why someone would never let that happen.
There were so many easy options for how to end it right there, but Tommy got suckered into being told that a reboot of a server that people struggled to do anything on and had been essentially dead for a year was possible.
I dunno, like the angst person in me secretly loves that Tommy's last arc was just him spiraling because Wilbur was gone but like... the story person in me is going "is that really how they wanted it to go when they were setting up Tommy to be this big pov arc at the start of everything. It's just depressing." It's also been done before. The cycle of Wilbur leaves Tommy's life and Tommy becomes depressed, reckless, and subjected to horrors had happened twice at that point and knowing it never changed is just a downer.
