Was it wrong Timerra not in the top 25 FE engage popularity poll in Nintendo dream?
First at all I don't like Timerra. I don't hate her but I don't love her too. For me she is between exist and not exist. As a royal her presence not so impactful in story. As a unit very mediocre and she relied on sandstrom which was funny skill but strategically bad to rely on it just like Alcryst luna crit.
Now, did I expect her to be so low in term of popularity? No! I expected her to be higher but then I remember this poll was in Japan not global. In global I believe she would be quite popular. Especially since Westerner (this is how people in my country called American and Europian) reception was pretty good on Timerra and Fogado before the game launched. Was japanese who participated in this poll racist? IMO probably there was racism but if I excluded that as one of the factor, Timerra not so popular in this poll actually quite logical.
1. Many participant probably not finished their game yet. There was tendency for late recruit less popular in the poll.
2. Support conversation in engage 1.0 hard to be unlocked. Engage support points only gained in player phase and units must be adjacent to each other. Not many somniel activities for the sake increasing support points in 1.0.
3.As relatively late recruit many player probably didn't have chance to unlock Timerra support conversation. She was not in priority since many prefered to see support conversation from earlier units that already formed attachment.
4. Not impactful in the story. This applied to Fogado. Once passing chapter 13 the story return to Elusian and hounds again. I don't even remember she existed in cutscene after chapter 14.
5. Simply not appealing personality. I am not Japanese but at least as fellow Asian. Characters like Timerra, Goldmary, Hortensia, and Rosado are not well liked in my country. Their personality were annoying. Also sorry but Timerra bad singing was big turn off for me. I can't stand it. Not endearing at all.
6. Not appealing character design. Timerra design reminded me with pokemen gym leader than FE. Also the beauty standard of Asian people were fair/light/white skin not dark skin like Timerra. Whittening lotion so popular in Asia not without reason. Simply just because how culture shaped the mindset. Was it racist? maybe but again it was not easy to change people mindset.
Oh by the way Alfred in top 3 was surprising but then I rememebered his voice quite hot in the JP voice unlike the ENG voice. He was definitely quite relevant in the story. He kinda like childhood friend for Alear which probably quite well liked archtype in Japan.
I still dislike him tho. Even the writter pull out sob back story for him I would not give pity point for him. In fact because of that sob back stroy I disliked him more than him simply just obsessed muscle boy.

The biggest insult in engage
Tumblr media
Game if you don't want player to use this class on more than 1 unit just remove it from the shop. Thank you.
It is hillarious tho. Engage is truly like a toxic boyfriend that I love 馃枻

I think I like the xenologue story better than the main story. I also like the new characters better than most of the engage base game characters. However, for the gameplay... It is just not fun to do it mainly because one garbage unit.
One of the unit in xenologue is forced deploy but they are useless. It feels like Roy 0.5. At least Roy still can do something with sword since sword is good in fe6 but this one if you don't have byleth or corrin ring congratulation you stick with a piece of stick (heh) that easily break. Oh we also cannot alter their inventory in prep menu unless we sacrifice one turn to do trading or convoy management via Alear.
Speaking of difficulty and timing I think I agree that this xenologue should be played in chapter 16 or 17. Because the new characters not scaled based on the current main chapter they just got flat internal level 20. Doing it too early would break the early game playthrough. Doing it too late in chapter 20s their stats already fallen behind. 16 and 17 are ideal chapter because all the units we have probably around lvl 20-25. Moreover, it is better to have byleth and corrin in hard/maddening difficulty.

Fun fact: Crestless mages show a tome when activating unique warrior specials. Meanwhile crested mages didn't show their tome.

Wave 4 dlc engage (may contain spoiler but mostly about the gameplay)
I tried to play the xenologue on maddening dificulty. So this dlc works different compare to cindered shadow. The xenologue tied to our current playthrough not separate campaign like CS. I guess how it works is we need to beat the xenologue in every fresh playthrough if we want the new units. Unlike CS that we only need to beat it once and the ashen wolves would be transfered to main campaign.
We can use any emblem and pick some units you got in main story and dlc paralogue but the units level would be determined by xenologue chapter. I must say that this is more difficult than engage main story. However the difficulty is like how chapter 25 difficulty in maddening but the worst is we cannot warp skip since weapons and staves already determine by the chapter. We can access inventory and give emblem but it is quite limited.
Anyway I think it is better to play it when we were near end game on maddening. I have not beat it yet since chapter 3 xenologue on maddening just too much and I was so tired with the enemies density. I honestly consider to play it on normal just to see the story.
I honestly prefer we just have separated campaign no need to be tied on current playthrough. I also prefer if they just give fix units and emblems that can be used for xenologue campaign. It seems the balance for maddening become all over the place because they have trouble to design it since there are so many factors when it based on player current playthrough.
I prefer how 3H handled xenologue. While the replaybility for CS not as high as engage xenologue but overall i prefer that system. Even if engage xenologue replaybility quite high but the maps not so enjoyable to play in maddening difficulty.

Solm siblings: Funny how Timerra and Fogado were popular before engage was released but now Pannete and Pandreo are more popular as units. Well Timerra and Fogado kinda bas as units especially for royal I kinda expect them to be stronger but nope the only good royals in this game are Ivy and Hortensia.
Timerra and Fogado come with whatever personal skill they have and mediocre bases. Meanwhile Pannete and Pandreo come with cracked bases and good personal skill.
Timerra and fogado personal class also not good. Like fogado better to be Warrior (tbh any physical units good as warrior and wyvern) and Timerra while sandstrom is funny her class just not as good as Halberd. I think warrior class just the best class to make them useful in maddening. Kinda like wyvern lord in 3H, warrior just op in general.

rewatching engage death cutscene actually makes me appreciate how short Greil and Jeralt death cutscene when they were killed. Not many words but have more impact. Props to the engage VA who delivered the dialogue very well. not gonna lie a bit moved with their performance when I watched it for the first time.

Read a post about engage fanfic vs fates and awakening in reddit. Actually I was quite surprised that the number of engage fanfic in ao3 less than 800 fics. I thought with the popularity of 3h and also engage has higher pre-order (not sure how many copies it sold now) the fanfic can reach at least more than 1000 a month. Reaching 3h fanfic just unrealistic (more than 40000) but i do hope engage can reach fates/awakening fanfics (each has 9000 fanfics)

Ivy sucks she cannot double
Ivy sucks she got crit because her luck very low
Ivy sucks her mag growth not high enough
Ivy sucks she has low dex cap
Meanwhile LTC player rated Ivy as one of the best unit and I agree with them. She just need a little help and the return are very high. Just gave her +spd skill and ring/tonic that boost speed to reach the doubling threshold for low-mid tier speed enemies. Forged bolganone and good engrave for hit also fixed her hit rate issue. Remember magic is better than physical attack for late game so a little bit investment to her is very worth it.

Sometimes i wish I had way to know the original script of fates and 3houses. I heard the original scripts pretty massive so they need to cut down a lot of the original contents. Although unlikely, anime/manga adaptation would be better than going to video game format again (at least not for srpg but visual novel would be very cool)
