I put this in the tags but I was thinking about this part of sdv again and the only criticism I have of george is that there was a lot of missed potential.

I married alex again as a male farmer, and it's just... not realistic (to me) that george goes from "to men being together is unnatural!" to "I admit, I thought it was strange you two got married, but you're in love, so I changed my mind."

If I could make a few changes to george's confrontation with his homophobia, I would make his dialogue reflect your friendship levels with alex and george respectively.

So, if you had low hearts with alex and george, he would be comfortable with being outright homophobic. Think about it: alex sees his grandpa at least twice a week, and he's bound to talk about his marriage with you - especially if you have been horrible to him. If alex has low hearts, he'd be relieved to be with george and evelyn when he visits them. There's no way he wouldn't mention how awful he's been - there's no indication that he and his grandparents aren't close enough that he would share if he wasn't well (and they have raised alex for a good few years, they know him). If you also had low hearts with george, he doesn't care about you and he certainly doesn't care when alex is on the line.

If you have high hearts with george and low hearts with alex, george should be suspicious of you - "why are you closer with me than your own husband? Are you trying to divide this family??"

If you have high hearts with george and alex, that's when he should start truly unlearning his homophobia. At the end of the day, he would see that alex is happy and his own homophobia blinded him to seeing that alex is where he wants to be.

I think I would culminate this with the following ten-heart/general high heart george event:

George invites you to dinner at his home

When you enter, he tells you to sit down and eat

He starts explaining why he was hostile toward your marriage with alex - maybe he thought alex was too immature to know what he actually wanted, such as his lofty ideas of going pro. Maybe he was raised with the idea that having children is more desirable than love

He tells you why he started deprogramming his homophobia, saying that alex talks about you every time he visits. George says there's an undeniable spark of love in his eyes - the same spark george experienced with evelyn

I think many games, movies, books, and media want to portray deprogramming homophobes, but they don't explore why that person was homophobic and why they reformed and the effort that goes into it. We know that homophobia is canon in stardew, but there isn't much insight as to why that homophobia is canon. It would be an interesting insight if george actually explained why he was homophobic - there are a lot of reasons why people say gayness is "unnatural," so you can't necessarily assume why he says it is when you speak to him with low hearts.

I think concerned ape wanted to develop george, and I'm not mad at all about how he handled it, I just think you can go deeper. There's an argument to be made that my proposed changes would be unfair for female players who marry alex because there would be more content about the mullners, but honestly, that's the nature of homophobia - it was already a bit unfair for male players who had lower than perfect friendship with george. Homophobia is an unnatural response to a natural phenomenon, and I think we should be allowed to observe the process of deprogramming.

To be fair, this is kind of a fairy vs walrus situation.

Like, it's much easier to accept/think it's normal that I have forest magic given to me by a wizard who's also the town hermit and that drinking green tea makes me hallucinate, but it's too much to believe that green water rains down and causes the entire valley to be absolutely flooded with fiber and magically-growing trees and also it makes you feel like you're in the apocalypse the first time it happens

The best thing about the new stardew update is you can tell concerned ape got comfortable just being fucking weird. Which is understandable considering most indie devs have to be some level of insane
