Major Networks: Kids just can’t understand complex themes and subjects. You have to dumb everything down for them...

Avatar: How about the theme no one is truly evil. Everyone can be redeemed. You always have a choice. Friendships last more than one life time... all while having the world almost burn into a fiery flame and our main protagonists having to wonder if they truly believe in all the themes I just mentioned.

Over the Garden Wall: What about having a show where it’s just big metaphor for the after life and it’s kids wondering in the grey area between life and death. Along the way they learn how to truly treat each other as brothers... and make it only slightly scarring.

Gravity Falls: I love what your doing with the sightly scarring bit but what if we adding the theme of all good things must come to an end, You don’t know everyone’s situation, and life is a mystery so go out and solve it. Also let’s add some codes for kids to crack... because they’re smart.

Steven Universe: Okay but what about the theme love conquers all but also show the hardship war and destructive love has on people and how it can hurt people even thousands of years after the fact, but it’s never too late to try and make it better... also make it have queer representation.

She-ra: See, I like what your doing with that queer representation... but what if we showed that abuse victims don’t have to continue the cycle even if it seems like they reached a point of no return, they can become better. Also show that everyone has the power to be good but not everyone will choose to be good, and you can be selfish sometimes... also let’s show an wlw that has no mentions of homophobia... because lesbians with swords.

Kinda wanna know more about the Eda/Lilith dynamic in particular. It obviously seems very tense now as adults but I am curious into how it devolved into that and what it was like before

What’d I do for a flashback scene of Eda younger. It’s not out of the realm of possibility because we see Eda in her dream so I’m hoping we can at least see how she remembers things.

Also is this just me but does Amity’s head seem a bit too large for her body in some scenes? Like I get the cartoon style but she strikes me as borderline chibi in some regards and it throws me off. It doesn’t seem like it with the other kids, even Gus, so idk.

Fast Karate Game of the Year 2017 #10: Butterfly Soup

It would be lame if I said I didn’t “get” the meme-y-ness of this game, a not-quite-old-enough person acting willfully out of touch, but it’s true. Butterfly Soup is a nostalgia piece for a high school experience ten+ years (and other factors besides) removed from my own. I only recognize half the jokes because I see people a decade younger than me reblog them on tumblr.

That being said, as may end up becoming a theme this year (i haven’t exactly finalized the list😬despite it already being 2018😬), I have a soft spot for stories about sucky jerks who can’t help how much they suck and are jerks, because these stories, piquant or banal, inevitably boil down to a failure to communicate, which is a vector of frustration and release that I identify with perhaps too deeply. 

It always puts me out when people say “why didn’t person X say Y, that would’ve solved the whole movie!” and it’s almost like… wow??? human beings can’t talk to each other so good and i can think of a thousand, million, trillion moments in my life where my inability to say something has stymied my personal life in ways that enraged and depressed me, where i would do literally anything to say the words i couldn’t say except, yet, paradoxically, unearth a way to somehow say them??? so i find the (bein’ real, almost always from nerds) compulsion to have every character parse their emotions like a hyper-logical Feelings Bot often very baffling (except in cases of shows like Lost, where characters really should’ve talked less about their feelings and more about the startling plot revelations they discovered but didn’t think warranted telling anyone about (or just died)). There is a pain of emotional distance coupled with physical proximity, I think most people probably understand that, at least on a gut-check level. Or maybe not. Maybe nobody but me gives up on talking because they know they don’t have the capacity to express what they actually mean.

But I don’t think that’s true; otherwise, Butterfly Soup wouldn’t exist.

With at least three Sucky Jerks Who Suck And Are Jerks And Can’t Communicate among the main cast, Butterfly Soup has an extremely high SJ-WS&AJ&CC quotient. I truly believe the Sucky Jerk Who Sucks is a transcendent archetype, and, if you’ll forgive me for spoiling you, Butterfly Soup has a part where all the Sucky Jerks Who Suck And Can’t Communicate come together to assist the Suckiest Jerk Who Sucks And Can’t Communicate The Most to help them reconcile and achieve social communion and I suppose that’s truly heartwarming. I suspect it’s at least as heartwarming as the end of a Pixar movie, but I don’t watch those.

It’s cute and clever, sweet and short, which is most of what I like about visual novels, when I end up liking them. I played three quarters of it in a single morning over the span of two cups of coffee, then I walked the dog and ignored the podcast babbling in my ears while I thought about how when Min said she uses the family bathroom because they don’t care if you’re a boy or a girl, that’s the saddest a game has made me in a long, long time.

No I’m upset because Harry Potter is racist, pro slavery, antisemitic, homophobic, and transphobic.

In no situation can Harry Potter ever be a good book simply because it’s riddled with Rowling’s awful worldviews. Shall I describe the most obvious ones for you?

Pro-Slavery: The house elves are mistreated and enslaved but it’s okay because they want that and dobby is an extreme outlier. The girl who wants to free them is obviously misguided and Wrong (not to mention the movement she made is treated as a joke) and then it’s swept under the rug never to be spoken about again.

Homophobia: no amount of “Dumbledore is gay” can erase the “I made this one thing an allegory for aids but the person spreading it around likes to target little children. Also the ONE good person presented as suffering with this allegory is straight.” Do I really need to explain this one???

Antisemitic: The goblins. Obvious Jewish carticures. There are a billion posts on this.

Racist: Cho Chang. Just the name Cho Chang. Once again, numerous posts on why this is Bad.

Transphobic: Y’all really think Rowling “accidentally” presented Rita Skeeter as ‘masculine looking’? That’s a thinly veiled attempt of making Rita into a ‘predatory trans woman who preys on children by sneaking into their safe spaces’. Rowling is a Terf and meant for this to be transphobic.

There are millions of posts, hell you can google it. Death of an Author isn’t applicable when the media is riddled with their warped beliefs. You need to own up that Harry Potter at its core is problematic. Yes, you can sill enjoy it, but you need to recognize it for what it is.

Also another hot take: You can’t say “as a lesbian/gay Rowling isn’t a Terf” because you’re not Trans.

Anyway Rowling is a shit person so I can dunk on her bad writing as much as I want to. Also go bully her on twitter, she hasn’t learned from the last time.
