Emma loves her husband Leo and their young daughter Ruby: she’d do anything for them. But almost everything she's told them about herself is a lie. And she might just have got away with it, if it weren’t for her husband’s job. Leo is an obituary writer; Emma a well-known marine biologist. When she suffers a serious illness, Leo copes by doing what he knows best – researching and writing about his wife’s life. But as he starts to unravel the truth, he discovers the woman he loves doesn’t really exist. Even her name isn’t real. When the very darkest moments of Emma’s past finally emerge, she must somehow prove to Leo that she really is the woman he always thought she was . . . But first, she must tell him about the other love of her life.

Inspired by true events that rocked the nation, a profoundly moving novel about a Black nurse in post-segregation Alabama who blows the whistle on a terrible wrong done to her patients, from the New York Times bestselling author of Wench. Montgomery, Alabama, 1973. Fresh out of nursing school, Civil Townsend has big plans to make a difference, especially in her African American community. At the Montgomery Family Planning Clinic, she intends to help women make their own choices for their lives and bodies. But when her first week on the job takes her down a dusty country road to a worn-down one-room cabin, she's shocked to learn that her new patients, India and Erica, are children--just eleven and thirteen years old. Neither of the Williams sisters has even kissed a boy, but they are poor and Black, and for those handling the family's welfare benefits, that's reason enough to have the girls on birth control. As Civil grapples with her role, she takes India, Erica, and their family into her heart. Until one day she arrives at the door to learn the unthinkable has happened, and nothing will ever be the same for any of them. Decades later, with her daughter grown and a long career in her wake, Dr. Civil Townsend is ready to retire, to find her peace, and to leave the past behind. But there are people and stories that refuse to be forgotten. That must not be forgotten. Because history repeats what we don't remember.

Elizabeth says: "A Futile and Stupid Gesture" details Doug Kenney's life and the cultural phenomenon that was National Lampoon. In the first-ever comprehensive account of the National Lampoon the author draws from 130 interviews to reconstruct the magazine's history and the brilliant minds who contributed to its legendary status. This book is a fitting tribute to a comedic visionary whose brilliance, though tragically short-lived, forever altered the landscape of American comedy. Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice. It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.
From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?
As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they'll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?
The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn't have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.

Esther says: A fascinating overview of world architecture throughout history! Lots of pictures and graphics since words don't always cut it.... Of course European architecture is cool and all, but try branching out a little more; it's cool to see how different cultures around the world developed their own architectural styles throughout the centuries due to differences in culture, geography, available resources but at the same time they all seem to follow the trends of globalization.

Swaneet says: Every few years there's a book that moves me, changes me, and becomes a core part of my being. This year, it was Babel by R.F. Kuang. I picked up Babel after a lengthy reading hiatus, and found myself engrossed in the world of linguistic magic. If you enjoy found family stories, magical realism, and surgical critiques of colonialism, you'll love Babel. It took my soul for a ride, and reminded me why I've always loved to read.

Nina says: Holmes is back! Enola Holmes, that is, and she's brought Tewky and Sherlock along for the ride. While original six-book series started with an aim for middle grade readers, the success of the Netflix adaptations sees the new novels age up to teens. Regardless, Springer writes smart, witty tales that don't dumb down the Victorian world regardless of the reader's age.

Megan says: It just abruptly ends….This book was sooooooo good. I was riveted throughout. Alex is who she is due to years and years of thousands of bad decisions. She has definitely developed a major psychosis. What we witness, as the reader, is her spiral to finally hit rock bottom. Perhaps that is what the ending is……rock bottom…..we had arrived. You can absolutely imagine what happens afterwards, and none of it is good.

In a nightmarish ruined world slowly awakening to the light after sleeping in darkness, the infant rediscoveries of science are secretly nourished by cloistered monks dedicated to the study and preservation of the relics and writings of the blessed Saint Isaac Leibowitz. From here the story spans centuries of ignorance, violence, and barbarism, viewing through a sharp, satirical eye the relentless progression of a human race damned by its inherent humanness to recelebrate its grand foibles and repeat its grievous mistakes

Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But soon she finds out - and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late. But I reassure myself that the Winchesters don't know who I really am. And they don't know what I'm capable of.
