uh, uh! I have one!
in Italian when you have to affectionately say that you know someone (implying that they're an idiot) you say something like "conosco i miei polli"
which literally translates to "I know my chickens very well"
I'll leave that there
to all bilinguals and multilinguals out there:
what's a phrase or saying in your native tongue that's hilarious or nonsensical in another language?
I'll start:
I go absolute feral over the fact that in swedish we say 'ute och cyklar' when someone is ignorant about something and might behave like they know what they are speaking of.
But in english it literally translates to 'you are out bicycling' and it makes no sense and it amuses me to no end

/ YUURI AND VICTOR'S HANDWRITING /
sou,
like,
yesterday I saw a post about Yuuri's and Victor's handwriting and since I actually studied graphology some time ago (lol) I wanted to try and give a more thorough explanation of it, because it seemed interesting and because I love this anime and all of its little subtleties. <3
sorry if the photos are blurry, but that was all that I could find (and had to work with) :/
So, without further ado:
YUURI
(reserved but confident, creative and altruistic)
A rounded calligraphy, as is well known, is one of the main signs of a reserved person, usually, but not necessarily, very shy.
Moreover, it can be observed that the space between the words is larger than the space between the letters. That is the sign of a person who usually tends to make themself smaller and mainly pay more attention and give more importance to others.
Since this trait is not really marked but barely noticeable, this tendence is not yet very grave or defined in him.
What's more, we can see that the lines in the words (in the "i" or "e") are either mostly straight and center, which means that he cares for himself, or slightly turned to the right, which means that Yuuri is very open and oriented towards other people as well as the future.
The prolonged stroke of the "E" on Yuri On Ice is usually read as a sign of confidence by the great part of experts. So, maybe Yuuri is actually really confident, something that can also be observed by the cuts and shapes of the "c" and "u", but doesn't dare believe it yet.
(Obviously it is also possible that his hand slipped BUT I like to read between the lines.)
It is also a possible sign for insecurity, since prolonging the trait of the "E" makes sure that the reader understands perfectly that the letter is an "E", not leaving any space for misunderstandings and complying to the writer's need to be understood.
spoiler: it is a trait we will see again with Vitya, these boys are a mess :)
The little loops we can see on the letters are what can be called "artistic loops" (bare with me, english is not my first language and I am translating that name in the best way I can, I am aware it sounds stupid) mainly meaning that the person has a certain kinds of artistic creativity.
Sadly, I do not know how to read a Japanese calligraphy BUT from what I can gather he tends to write in a very small print, solidifying the hypothesis of him not being very sure of himself and tending to try and take up less space possible. The handwriting on the page seems to be very neat, though, meaning a well disciplined mind and spacial awareness.
VICTOR
(creative and disciplined, confident or insecure?)
For Victor, even though I can have more material to work with, this reading that I am doing is much more difficult. Why? Because his handwriting is highly influenced by who he is and needs to be.
While Yuuri's handwriting is much more free and I am therefore able to read some reflection of what he is feeling in the way he shapes his letters, for Victor this almost never happens. So yeah, his need to portray perfection is reflected by his handwriting.
What I CAN read, though, is obviously that he is very disciplined. His words are well placed on the page, indicating spacial awareness, and we can easily follow the logical order of this list even when he uses arrows or crosses words over, indicating that he is very sure of what he is doing but also that he NEEDS the reader to easily understand what he has placed on paper.
This is a tendence that usually goes hand in hand with using, like Victor does, a script format for the letters and is usually found on insecure people's handwritings as they are trying to convey their need to always be understood perfectly.
His letters are more distanced between one another than Yuuri's but the distance between them (I am using n.9, the combo jump, as a reference since it seems to be the only instance where Vitya had written more than one "word" on the same line) results a little bit smaller.
This is, contrary to Yuuri's own tendence to be more open to others, a tendence to listen and give more space to himself rather than others and close himself a bit from others and their opinions. It can be read as a sign of confidence as well as insecurity and I think that in Victor's case is a bit of both.
While small in some ways, Victor's calligraphy is still considered to be of medium-small width, meaning that he knows who he is and is not afraid to take up as much space as necessary, even if sometimes he still tends to make himself smaller for others.
What I can see of the calligraphy presents some signs of a mathematical or logical intelligence (the script letters being the main indicator, as well as the order of the words themselves and the letters not being connected) but, mainly in the letter "p" and "q" AND IN THE NUMBER SEVEN (sorry I was forgetting it) the main smidges of artististic creativity can be seen.
To finish, contrary to Yuuri's own calligraphy, the straight lines in Victor's are perfectly parallel to the page, meaning a reluctance to open himself up to others and indicates capacity for self reflection.
I am sorry this was so long but I am a geek and I love how their personality shines throught their calligraphies as well, THIS ANIME IS SO WELL THOUGH I CAN'T
ALSO, even though I did study graphology it is not exact science and to be able to do a real reading I would need tons more material than just that. So yeah, if I made mistakes, don't hate.
