Ren looked at Weiss’ younger brother. Admittedly, Ren didn’t really know much about him. “I appreciate the offer, but I don’t think I could sit still even if I wanted to right now.” Still, food wasn’t a bad idea. “However, I think food could be a smart idea. If you could point me in the direction of the kitchen, I’m sure I can find my way around.”
Whitley frowned at the response, not much liking the rejection. Not out of concern for his wellbeing of course, but the unnecessary frivolousness of it. The young man seemed restless. Whitley couldn’t help but be observant, it was in his nature. His response was instantaneous. “I’m sure you can’t.” Which wasn’t as much of an insult as Whitley’s tone suggested. “It’d be easier finding your way around a maze.” Perhaps a bit overdramatically, he began forward and gestured for Ren to follow. “I’ll show you the way.”

“It’s better to just be alone.“

She crossed her arms and looked down. Being around people meant more room for mistakes. More risk to get hurt. Or for them to get hurt.
“Less likely to be lied to.“
Tumblr media
He quirked a brow at that, not quite convinced but not solidly against it either. There were weights and differences with both options. The bottom line, however, was he didn’t like his experience with being alone. Loneliness.
Whitley wasn’t a fan. “People are going to lie no matter what.” He stated. “Isolation hurts no one but you.” He knew from experience, the path to isolation was a cold road.

“This is also a teaching moment, so cmon.” He said grabbing Whitley by the arm. Knowing that the kid had some bravery in him it just needed to be properly tended to. Jaune following the source of the sound that he did assume would likely be nothing, kid was just on edge. “One thing I’ve learned is that big houses often have a lot of moans and groans in them. So it’s likely nothing. But, at times you are gonna be the one to investigate these instead of house guests, so Cmon Whitley, find the nerve I know you have.” Jaune encouraged the lad as they walked towards the source of the noise.
“A teaching moment.” He repeated, his tone sardonic at the suggestion of Jaune being his ‘teacher’. But alas, he was given little of choice but than to follow the blonde haired huntsman. Despite himself he felt more inclined to stay close to the other man when the noise presumed. At the very least, he could use him as a human shield. It was dangerous, and Jaune was just jumping in like there was nothing to fear. All they had was a pointy stick he called a sword, they were hardly prepared if it was a monster of some sort. “Not this house.” Whitley declared stubbornly. “I’m not the one who has a lot of nerve here.” He frowned, not liking the situation one bit. It wasn’t like he was trained for this, going into trouble without defense was an idiot’s ploy. “If I die, I’m haunting you.” He warned with the utmost seriousness.

neo snorts in amusement at the idea of them being a huntsmen, looking up momentarily from their scroll towards the younger schnee sibling. ‘  i appreciate the compliment, but no. i’m not one of your sister’s friends, either.  ’
Tumblr media
he hadn’t expected the lack of vocalization but was quick to take it in stride. “it wasn’t necessarily a compliment...” huntsmen had a certain look to them, and it was a look of someone he’d never be. at this point in his life he didn’t mean it as a compliment, nor an insult. just a comment. “is that so? first the general, then the protector of mantle, i was beginning to think there was no one my sister wasn’t friends with.” whitley wasn’t bitter. he wasn’t.

“You’re my sister’s acquaintance.” Whitley stated, trying to remember his name. Boldly, he guessed. “...Yin?” He hadn’t been paying attention, though he vaguely recalled the association of blonde hair with Ying and Yang.

A creepy noise, and a creeking. Whitley wasn’t scared but it was ominous and didn’t much like it. “You’re a huntsman,” He pointed out. “Aren’t you supposed to check out that kind of thing?” It was probably nothing, but just maybe if it wasn’t. It wouldn’t hurt to find out. Well, perhaps it would hurt Jaune but that was a risk Whitley was willing to take.

“I expected you to be shorter.” Perhaps it was something about the way his father’s description of the only adult accompanying Weiss and her group that made it seem like they were inept. Time would tell. “You are Qrow Branwen, correct?”

“If you’re hungry we have food, and if you’d like to sit we have chairs.” Whitley wasn’t being kind (he wanted that noted) but this was all he could think to start conversation. This one was a bit too quiet for him to dislike (as of yet, that is). “You don’t have to stand there uncomfortably.” At least, to Whitley he appeared uncomfortable.

invernc:
Winter was unsurprised that he seemed to think she needed something from him. That was probably what he was used to, after all-it was pretty much how their father’s behaviour had shaped all of them, at the very least herself and Weiss, anyway. And from what little she had seen so far of the young man Whitley was becoming instead of the little boy he used to be, that seemed like a fair assumption for her to make about him as well-though she’d die before she said that out loud.
“I don’t need anything from you.” She told him. “I’m here to help you, Whitley. In whatever way that entails.” Maybe it was too late for her to offer to be a part of his life.
But, on the off chance it wasn’t too late, that there was part of him who wanted that, too, didn’t she owe it to both of them to at least try?
Tumblr media
Why would she think he needed help? Well, the answer to that was simple. “I know what goes on in the manor just as well as you do, Whitley.” She said by way of explanation, her tone calm and without blame.
“You have every right to be angry at me, and if you truly want me to leave, just say the word and I will, and you won’t ever have to see me again. But I…want to make things right with you, however long that takes.”
Exchange was the way of the world. Nothing was free, and nothing was unearned. If it looked too good to be true than it was. Things like kindness, giving, and even charity were foreign to him. So the idea that his sister was here for anything less than something to gain didn’t compute with him. Winter was a huntress and a solider, surely she had more important things to do than whatever this was. Not that he had any idea what those important things would be, but regardless. Whitley was sure it was far more important than ‘this’ him.
“I don’t know what would give you the incorrect idea that your help was needed or wanted.” He kept his tempter, he tried to keep his temper. He couldn’t very well pull a Weiss and go off the rails, he didn’t have that luxury. “And the fact you believe I need it, is insulting.”
It was... in the way that it hadn’t been sooner. In the way that he had no idea how to take any help because he’d never been offered it before. The word sounded unfamiliar in his head and every instinct he had screamed it was some sort of trap.
Why else would she offer it now?
Tumblr media
He stiffened at her words. Denying it was little use without an audience to listening in. The only person Whitley would be putting on a show for in this moment would be himself. Part of him wanted to do that anyway. It felt easier than saying the truth out loud. Not speaking of it made things easier. When he didn’t speak of it, he could pretend it wasn’t there. He liked pretending.
 He was good at it.
“You know better than anyone that discussion is pointless.” Whitley stated it as a fact. To him, it was one. “If there was anything to be done it would have been done already.” She worked under General Ironwood himself, if not even he could stop their father than what hope did anyone else have?
Restraining himself and not getting lost in his emotions, Whitley reminded himself. He had to continue down that path, anything else was unacceptable. “I am not angry at you.” A lie. “You are irrelevant to me.” A larger lie. He swallowed. Her words pierced him more than Whitley would like. “I don’t believe things being ‘right’ between us is a reality that exists. You’re a soldier Winter, I’ve been told you’re logical.” Been told. Kept up with her career in the military. Same difference. “You should know better. Something that never existed in the first place is not mendable.”
