Made to sit down on the ground instead, John's hand coming down to support him, even now, even when they were like this, and it would hurt so much less, Arthur thought, if he could make himself believe that John didn't care at all about him.

But his words to Yellow back in New York had been as truthful as the ones he said to Kayne, that much Arthur was willing to believe.

It didn't change though what John had done.

“It wasn't just the fire that drew that couple in,” Arthur added, voice less deep again but somehow the stove was still too damn hot, somehow his voice made it even hotter. I … I suppose it wasn't, John managed to force out.

(Or five times Arthur recited erotic poems for John and one time John did for Arthur.)

Double Drabble: Wrist Kisses

Arthur can feel the pulse point flutter underneath his lips and wonders if it's his own fast beating heart or somehow in some bizarre way, John reacting.

What are you doing? At the very least, he thinks, John sounds almost flustered. "You know what a kiss is, don't you?" he says. Keeps going then, touches so soft they are barely there as he kisses along John's wrist.

Arthur, John begins, only to fall silent. Their fingers are intertwined and Arthur can feel John's hand twitching, moving against his own. Reacting to the kisses and he smiles against John's wrist.

"Feels good, doesn't it?" he asks, follows it up with another kiss. John's skin is warm against his lips, smells slightly of the soap Arthur had washed their hands with before but most importantly, Arthur can feel the steady beat of a pulse.

Yes. Yes it feels good, Arthur.

A pulse that quickens at John's words and Arthur doesn't care if it's his or John's. Presses another kiss against John's wrist instead, against his, their, pulse, soft and gentle and deep and longing.

It can be both their heart, he thinks. And squeezes John's hand as he continues kissing his wrist.

Drabble: Love & Sacrifice (Arthur/John + Kayne)

Love, John had come to realize, could be a horrible thing. It made humans stupid, reckless, thoughtless.

"Arthur, hold on!"

Love made people demand and beg and plead for things that couldn’t be.

"Please, Arthur."

Love was a burden. Love was pain.

"Arthur, don't..."

Love was wetness seeping from a wound that hands could not close.

"And what have we here. Why is it every time I meet you two, he's bleeding out?"

"Save him. Please!"

"If you are asking this nicely, something can be arranged. It will cost though."

"Anything."

Love was sacrifice and a hand tightly gripping another.

Ficlet: Singing (After Episode 26)

The climb down into the mines is long and Arthur is not overly keen on what he knows they will find there. There is no way he’ll think of what they have left behind in the mansion either though, the feeling of eyes popping underneath his hand too fresh in his mind.

“Talk to me, John,” he says instead. About what? John asks. He’d shrug if he wasn’t currently climbing down a rope. “I don’t know. Anything.” Suddenly he remembers John’s voice when he had recited the poem. “A poem,” he says. “Or a song. Something to distract me.” He half-expects an argument, John reasonably pointing out that Arthur shouldn’t be distracted when he is climbing into a hole. Instead though, there is a beat of silence. I can't forget the night I met you, John then begins. Hearing the song almost startles a surprised laugh out of Arthur, suppressed only by the knowledge that they need to be silent. That's all I'm dreaming of, John continues. His voice isn’t melodic, clearly unschooled in anything resembling singing, wavering between notes and unable to hit some of the higher ones. Arthur doesn’t care. And now you call it madness. He thinks it’s the most beautiful song he’s ever heard. But I call it love, John ends as his voice turns softer and there is longing, in his words or in Arthur or maybe in both. It doesn’t matter, what matters is knowing it’s there.

Yes, Arthur thinks. I call it love.
