short thoughts watching The Prom on Netflix
spoilers warning
i’m on mobile and idk how to do the read more
i love the musical, and i’ve got some issues with the film. james corden as barry being one of them*, but there are enough articles on that - i’ll save it. but i’m looking at the film on its own, and on a whole, i genuinely enjoyed it!
Tumblr media
these are my main emotions and all about the last bit because i only just thought of doing this.
Jo Ellen Pellman is so good, and i 100% expect to see her blow up as an actress. Also, Ariana DeBose is so incredibly talented, I adore her, and the way she can play a convincing teenager is some form of magic honestly. genuinely just amazing. both of them.
Zazz - all i can think about is how much i miss live musical theatre. love it
Love Thy Neighbor - one of my favourite musical songs ever in general, Rannells is a beautiful, brilliant man and just made me emotionally implode. king.
Unruly Heart - the visuals for this broke me. holy shit. i’m sobbing. the flood of emotion for how i was before (and during) coming out. everything i needed from this song.
the coming out scene - another heartbreak. damn this film has such a good cast. (again, not going into the corden issue)
and meryl streep is such an amazing actress???? she completely fills and embodies every role she plays and i just —
*i think james corden did a pretty good job as an actor, but, as an actor, should have done better.
final thought:
i needed this film so badly when i was a kid. i’m so happy it’s here now. regardless of my issues with it, it made me cry and i loved it.

dark academia but in 2020 and gen z
- staying up late in the dark reading wikipedia articles on obscure topics on your phone
- researching random things that caught your interest instead of paying attention to your zoom classes/ doing homework
- reading during zoom classes
- checking daily if your local library reopened
- notes app poetry at 4 am
- reading by candlelight at night just because lamps are too bright and you might get caught by your parents
- waking up early to watch the sunrise before online school
- developing a coffee addiction over quarantine
- wearing dramatic coats and button ups etc to just go to the supermarket

song asks that get progressively more specific
A song that reminds you of your childhood
A song to sleep to
A song that your best friend loves
A song that hypes you the fuck up
A song you like to daydream to
A song that’s on at least 3 of your playlists
A song that you love from a genre you don’t usually like
A song that you liked when you where 10 that still slaps
A song that makes you want to go on an adventure
A song you’d want to dance with your partner to ( or future partner )
A song to stomp around and pout to
A song to listen to whilst you lie in a meadow
A song that reflects your views on love
A song to sing to the sun
A song you like that sounds like its on the soundtrack to an indie coming of age film
A song that you like that romanticises being a teenager
A song that makes you want to grab your friends jump up and down dancing and screaming the lyrics
A song that you like that the lyrics are just so beautiful they’re practically poetry
A song that you can imagine listening to in an abandoned church ( if it isn’t hozier im judging you, but whatever )
A song from the soundtrack of a film that you like so much after the film finished you immediately looked for it
A song for when the sun has gone down and you are feeling absolutely buck-wild with exhilaration!
A song that makes you feel like you’re strolling through Ancient Greece living your best life
A song that when you listen to it you’re transported to a liminal space, time is pointless and you must sit and wallow in the void that remains
A song to listen to on a long drive when you have the really strong urge to keep driving until you find somewhere to start a new life (preferably a europian city whose language you don’t speak)

cranberry.
i’ve never had one of these before, thank you so much 💛
Cranberry- What do you think your younger self would think of the current you?
I think baby J would definitely have mixed feelings about where I am right now – there are things about life that I’d wanted to be further on than they are, but one thing I know for certain is that my younger self would be blown away by my coming out.
When I was younger, I didn’t think I would be able to be openly myself around my family. Coming out to them was a massive step that I genuinely didn’t believe I had the courage to do, so my early teenaged self would hopefully be proud.
Also, if I met this version of myself when I was a teenager, I’d be shocked with how far I’ve come in academia. That’s a really big thing for me, because I was a pretty bad student when I was at school, and being months away from graduating university is a goal I never let myself have.
My young childhood-self, however, would probably be disappointed that I’m not a world-renowned actor, and would definitely be annoyed that I don’t wear a full pirate costume as my everyday outfit!

Here’s the November Studyblr Challenge! Sorry for the delay in bringing it, but the last two weeks have been very uncertain for me - especially with studying - because of the student protests in my country. I’m going to busy with exams during November, so I won’t be as active on tumblr, but I will try my best to reblog your studyblr challenge posts as usual and of course take part in the challenge :)  I’ve put together a mix of study-intensive challenges and “fun challenges”, but I’ve made some of the study-intensive challenges more general than they were last month. I also saw a few comments from people saying that they felt the challenge was dominating what they wanted to post on their blog and I totally understand that. So I just want to re-emphasis that there’s no pressure for anyone to “complete” the challenge or post something for it every day - please, post whatever you want on your blog and I’m obviously really happy when it’s for the challenge, but there really is no obligation to stick to the challenge every day for anyone. I’m still learning about how to run these challenges and how to improve them, so I welcome all constructive criticism and I really appreciate hearing how people feel about the challenges
**I’d also just like to point out that when it comes to the study-intensive challenges, if it’s something that you know does not work well for you personally, then you should rather spend that time filling up the challenge with something that DOES work for you and I’ll reblog it anyway. Everyone has their own, unique way of studying and learning. But, if it’s something you’ve never tried before and you want to give it a shot please do try it out!**
The same “rules” that applied for the previous challenges apply for the November challenge. Interpret the prompt for the day in any way you like. Textpost, pictures, gifs, videos…whatever your heart desires. You can do as few or as many of the challenges as you feel - there’s no signing up or obligation involved - just tag your challenge posts with #munirastudychallenge or #november studyblr challenge and I’ll reblog them :)
If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to ask me! My ask and my inbox are always open. Happy studying!
xx Munira

Theatre Academia Aesthetic
(actor-focused)
reciting Shakespeare over a cup of black coffee, purposely breathy as a means of cooling the scalding drink.
living for DigitalTheatre/BroadwayHD (or its free variants) because professionally recorded theatre yes pls
mumbling along to musical soundtracks under your breath on bus journeys, book in your hand, daydreaming about your next performance
repurposing old costumes that you may or may not have stolen from the last show because you got attached – even though you swore you wouldn’t
scribbling your lines at the top of notebooks in the lull of lectures/classes
almost all your shoes are boots
challenging yourself to speaking theatrically for a whole day just to feel the drama coursing through your veins
photocopied monologues taped on your walls
taking any opportunity to quote every play you’ve ever read, or at least slip a reference into conversation
choosing and revising your next audition monologues/songs constantly because you connect so deeply with everything you read/hear and want to do it all

quite a nice chill day today, there was a gorgeous sunset that i couldn’t photograph because i left my phone at home, but i was in the moment so that’s still something. :)
today’s productivity:
did some work on my dissertation plans, got the poetry form down – all i need is a subject. and that’s so hard to find.
propagated part of one of my plants because it sprouted a new head and started pushing the leaf off, which started sprouting roots. so i pulled it off and planted it! looking forward to seeing its progress!
still to do:
post things.

i'm gonna lose it god all i want is to meet a group of pretentious people at college who all study the greeks and drink wine and tea at someone's country house and have lengthy conversations about the greek philosophy and poetry and literature and mythology during the ungodly hours and submerge ourselves in books together and have a boy ask me if i want to go to bed with him in latin and throw a bacchanal in the middle of the woods where we get drunk on the strongest of wines and and there's so much more
