Manga Title: Suijin no Ikenie (The Water Dragon’s Bride) Mangaka: Toma Rei Genre: Fantasy Shoujo Status: Ongoing Synopsis: (From Mangaupdates) One’s life can be changed in a brace of shakes. And little Asahi is unlucky in that: she suddenly finds herself in a strange world where people worship the mysterious water god. The girl is sure that the whole story about gods is just a mere fable but… why and whom is she sacrifiсed to?

First Impression: Stumbling upon the gorgeous animation and fantastical world of The Ancient Magus’ Bride brought all the Studio Ghibli feels back again, and with it my interest in manga. The Water Dragon’s Bride is a perfect candidate to wet my feet back into manga-land. The title sounds very similar to manhwa Bride of the Water God 😉, but I haven’t tried that out yet due to art preference.

This is about a young girl who suddenly finds herself transported to a more primitive world. The scared villagers sacrificed her to the Water Dragon, and her fate became messily entangled with him. I have a weakness for stories involving mythical beings or romances with them, and I thought this will play out more like my fave Kamisama Hajimemashita. But while that started out fun and light, Water Dragon delved deep into serious topics right away with the ugliness of religious fanatics who is scared of those different from them. Not much romance yet, as the girl has a lot of growing up to do, while the apathetic Water Dragon is still trying to figure out her humanity. There’s also a brewing love triangle with a childhood friend who has always protected her. Consider me intrigued.
