Lies they tell us - A Poem:
Get a degree so you don’t have to flip burgers the rest of your life. Work hard and employers will notice you. Go for an internship or work-to-hire. It will look good on your resume. It will get your foot in the door. You aren’t looking hard enough. You’ll have to lower your standards. Keep calling so they know you’re interested! You’re just lazy! Maybe if you didn’t buy that [item] you’d have more money... I worked shit jobs for less pay, you can too. Something better will come along soon. Stop living with your parents.. MOVE OUT! Maybe you should live in a cheaper apartment. Just move to a better city. All that education wasted!
If you want better wages don’t work for people who pay low rates.

Our credit card machines went down at work today for about twenty minutes.
A woman decided that she was “never going to shop here again” and exclaimed loudly that she only was carrying $60 in cash and made a huge deal that we had to take some stuff off her $75 order. She walked out proclaiming that we lost her business from here on in. My co-workers and I spent the rest of the day feeling intensely guilty because our store will never survive without her.

Customers who get angry when I read them their total cost are so compelling to me. Take charge of your narrative, Janice. Be the hero of your own story. You are the one who is purchasing $113.67 worth of adult zen coloring books, Janice. It’s not me you hate, Janice. It’s not me.

Why does everyone always look surprised that they have to pay when they get to the check out? Like, what did you expect was going to happen?

Things I don’t understand about a customer’s train of thought:
Asking “Do you sell a lot of this?” and “Have you been busy today?”

I shouldn’t have to say “excuse me” a hundred times a day because your fat ass is too busy to move out of the way.
