this is true of most art, though, right? like I spend hours making a 45-second-long video, and I'm WAY faster than most animators, because I take so many shortcuts.
Always something off about how an artist will spend years and years making a webcomic and then you can just read all of it in like a few hours

on the EXTREME off-chance that you follow me on Tumblr and not YouTube (whuh? how did you find me?), I've been posting a bunch of YouTube Shorts over there and I think they're good. latest one here:

@headfullofgalaxies if you're looking for something less expensive, I previously used DaVinci Resolve, and I've also heard good things about OpenShot (although in my brief experience with it it was pretty limited), both of which are free!
Hey, Red!
I'm sorry to ask an OSP-related question on your comic blog, but this is something I'm struggling with and maybe you can help. Feel free to ignore if you don't wanna answer.
I'm curious what editing software you use in your videos. I want to make videos similar to your style of presentation. I have fully recorded audio (audacity) and complete drawings (csp), but now I'm struggling with how to put them together to actually make a video.
I'm certain you've answered this question before- probably several times- but I cannot for the life of me find the answer.
If you're kind enough to answer that question, could you also tell me if there is anything else I should keep in mind during this process? I've posted things online before and have a rough idea of where to set my expectations (low), but posting new stuff on new platforms is always intimidating.
Sorry for the long ask. I hope it's not a bother. Thank you!
I use Final Cut Pro for my editing! It's very intuitive drag-and-drop for editing, and it's quite easy to layer visuals and audio together using it, although it is a bit pricey.
When it comes to video-making, I'd say the most important thing is to make sure you're creating something you enjoy creating. It can't just be Content and it can't just be fun for you when you receive external validation in the form of comments or likes etc - if you don't enjoy the process itself on some level, it's gonna become soul-crushing and draining. And on that note, don't be afraid to try new things or change old formulas. You're refining the process by figuring out what you like doing. It's good to experiment and to just let yourself have fun with it.

Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):
- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue
- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS
- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria
- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!
- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better
- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag
- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag
- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes
- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later
- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users
- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing
- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic

Act 2 is out baby!!
okay, full disclosure:
I spent an extremely long time (for me) working on this video. it's an 8-minute animated little summary of the first act of Midsummer Night's Dream, and I know that sounds boring, but I promise it's funny and engaging (especially scene 2). I'm really proud of it, I poured a lot of time and effort into it, I think it turned out really good...
A Severely Abridged Midsummer Night's Dream (Act 1)
...but it is... not getting a lot of views. at time of writing it's sitting at around 14% of the views of my previous video, and it's the lowest-viewed video in its first week of any of my other videos I've released this year.
and that's bumming me out, partly because heehoo big number go brrr, but partly because I genuinely think people who watch this video (and its upcoming followups) might get something out of it? like it's funny and a little bit educational but in a fun way and not in a boring way. if that makes sense.
anyway. if you see this post, please consider watching it and maybe even sharing it around if you want. reblog if you wanna help me out. it would just make me feel a little less discouraged, y'know?
you don't gotta, you don't know me, you have no reason to do this, I getcha, don't worry. I sincerely don't want to pressure or guilt you into doing anything.
to thank you for reading this post, here's a lil sneak peek of some trees I'm making for Part 2:

I had this idea for a looping animation in which a single dot has a pretty long loop, but the animation as a whole is much shorter. Because of the repetition this animation is only 1 second long!

@cacklingskeleton YOU'RE RIGHT AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT!!
imagine you live in a world that's exactly the same as this world but people see dogs and cats as disgusting horrific monsters that must be killed at all costs. dogs and cats in this hypothetical are exactly identical to the ones in our world in every way. they're still cute and warm and kindhearted and lovely and sweet and worthy of love. but the dominating cultural idea is that if you see a dog, you kill it immediately.
anyway. I live in that world.
be nicer about bugs :(

king mac: I see my future stretching out ahead of me like a bloody knife pointing towards the king's breast
the porter five minutes later: hey y'all ever notice how it's hard to pee with a boner
say what you will about shakespeare but the man understood the full range of the human experience, because in the same play where he wrote deeply about grief and suicidal spiralling, he included the worlds most universal human experience, which was:
barnardo, way to cheery: good morning horatio! glad to see you’re awake!
horatio, tired af: i’m not. awake or here.

the thing that's vital to understand about youtube is that there are pretty much zero youtubers who want their thumbnails to be over-the-top and clickbaity.
however, when, like, whether or not your children get to eat is based on the size of a number, you're going to fight tooth and nail to keep that number as big as possible, and if that number has been proven to get bigger with a particular style of thumbnail, then you're damn sure they're gonna make all their thumbnails cringey.
like, yeah, obviously overly-clickbaity thumbnails suck, and everyone hates them. but like. it's not always down to the artistic desires or greed of the artist.
when the youtuber’s content stays the same but their thumbnails get progressively more and more cringe until you subconsciously stop clicking on their videos
