Something funny to me is that almost all of the fandom seems to think that between Dazai and Chuuya the one who doesn’t care is Dazai? When the novels pretty much are screaming the opposite hahaha. Like, Chuuya definitely cares no doubt about it but at least at 15-16 the one who cared the most was obviously Dazai.

I love bsd tumblr bc I was just scrolling through posts and I see one that says "one of the main themes of bsd is existentialism" with a well thought out analysis then I scroll down to the post directly after it and it's Dazai eating a banana with the peel on

I really hate when people discuss bsd character’s morality in terms of good and bad because if there’s a thing with these characters? is that it’s never that simple. Most of the characters in this series are morally grey. Just centering around general actions and discarding the motives? Is an incomplete analysis of them, sorry, their motives HEAVILY influence their actions too, but also to have a good motive is not an excuse for bad actions. It’s not that easy. Also there is a whole context that should be taken into account. Ugh it’s just that this really frustrates me.

I won’t be going deep with this one (not rn at least) but an example of it? Chuuya is a mafioso, he has done a lot of fucking crimes but if there’s something that it’s important to understand about him is that his sense of humanity relies HEAVILY in the connections he makes with people and yeah, the kid was taken for the mafia obviously it’s not like he was surrounded by the best people of the world but they still are the most important connections of his life, for him they are family. Chuuya chooses to prioritize them over his own moral code. He is doing all of that for the benefit of the mafia and he won’t regret it because yes, for him they are more important than basically everything. To do all of that for the sake of the people he loves? It’s a good motive, is a human motive, is something we all can empathize with but that doesn’t excuse his actions
BUT
also how many times has he saved the city by now? If there’s a character in the whole story that would pass the ADA’s exam without even trying it’s him. People tend to forget that he is not a violence oriented person, not really (not saying that he doesn’t enjoy a good fight because he obviously does but that’s not even close to be the main point of his character) thing is, he is fundamentally a protection oriented person, he will do shit that NO SANE person would be able to do to protect the people important to him. He is so prone to autosacrificing all the time. The kid literally sacrificed the ONLY thing he has ever wanted trying to protect the city and the mafia. So can we really say that all of chuuya’s actions are bad? Man, the city is literally standing because of him. And he is doing it because he /cares/.
Dazai on the other hand is trying to be better even when he doesn’t have a particularly good motive for it. Does that mean that because of this his efforts trying to protect the city are worthless? Of course not. Does this make him automatically a morally good character? Uh no. Dazai doesn’t even care about good or bad. He is fundamentally a results oriented kind of person, either the action produces results or not. Bad or good, it doesn’t really matter. He “changed” because in order to work in the ADA it was necessary but from all the things that Dazai has changed in the ADA, I don’t consider this one to be in the top, not by a long shot. He is saving people, that’s great. He also refuses to acknowledge Akutagawa and keeps being purposefully cruel to him because that produces the best results, the whole sskk thing was possible because of that, he planned the car crash knowing that Ango was going to get hurt and counting with that to manipulate him. So can we really say that all of Dazai’s actions are good? Akutagawa is a walking bleeding wound because of him. He is in that prison moving people like they were chess pieces. I’m not saying he doesn’t care, I’m not saying he is not doing it to save the city but fact is that he is still manipulating people.
And I can do this with basically EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER IN THE STORY. Fuck, I didn’t even get to analyze a quarter of all the moral complexities in Dazai and Chuuya (mainly because this isn’t even an analysis just me ranting) but if I actually do it? I would’ve ended with the longest thing in the world. What I’m trying to say it’s that their morality is not that simple. It’s not just good and bad.

I’ll be honest, I can’t tell if it’s just me but, I can’t quite see ranpo in college or University for the sole reason that he probably wouldn’t have much to learn from the professors and that he’s… probably smarter than them and he wouldn’t really stay in some place where he had nothing to do and was forced to- yea all that college stuff but
just some 1 am thought I guess-

if soukoku ever EVER managed to take a decent picture with the two of them in it for some reason (god knows why), I’m just saying, Dazai would probably never let chuuya live it down. Actually pretending to be on civil terms with him? I never knew you liked me so much Chuuya !

you know, I really can’t tell if ranpo would eat sugar straight from those packets or not. bc like on one hand, he kinda really would honestly, like just honestly, but on the other, would he find it too… low quality and cheap or something along those lines or just “sugar. good. sure.”
I… will proceed to continue to think about this continuously for the next few hours. Send well wishes please and thank you

OKAY OKAY SO
BRAINROT TIME HERE
ranpoe, ranpo gets stuck in a book that erases his memory of his original life and everything and he believes that his in story character is actually him, and that everything the character went through in the past, he actually went through, you get the point
of course, he has a feeling that’s something’s off but he can’t quite place a finger on it
and within the story, welp spoiler alert, his character is gonna die (404, factory reset, yea you get the drill) and poe goes into the book to try to get him out before time runs out and all that shit while starting to lose sense of who’s actually him and who’s the character he took the place of, you get the point
I was thinking about the ada though and, I’m not quite sure how I’d want to put them in or if I would but, I think it’d be nice to squish them in too cause, ada family dynamics is a soft spot of mine-
and probably, another ability user with black cat in the rue morgue that put them in there, details are kinda ye mm yea
I think it depends on who the main focus of the story is on but (like if it’s poe, easily, ranpo as a target cause poe, new life, kinda at a nice spot and then this person he hurt from his past comes back to haunt him, that kinda stuff (yes this is taking mild reference from “and all I loved, I lived alone” which I am just slightly THOROUGHLY obsessed with its incredible, def recommend, please give it a shot-) you get the point, I’ll probably go with that in the end but
and I may add to this post as I come up with more details but for now, just adding this to the list of fic ideas I’ll probably never actually write but for now (this list is growing way too long)
ranpoe may or may not have my entire heart, have a good day !

Okay, I'm rambling BUT
I think people forget that Chuuya is one of the very few people who know Dazai. Like, actually know him past his masks. That Dazai isn't the only one who can hurt Chuuya, that Chuuya can hurt Dazai just as much. Because Chuuya knows Dazai. Knows what makes him angry and what makes him act in certain ways to some extent and can understand his plans with no words sometimes
People focus on Dazai hurting Chuuya. But nobody thinks Chuuya can strike back just as hard. You really think Chuuya didn't at some point absolutely made Dazai feel like shit to the point it made his mind spin for nights? You really think Chuuya hasn't made Dazai feel guilty at least once?
I headcanon that when Chuuya is so pissed he becomes serious his words are pure poison. I headcanon that Chuuya can hurt Dazai more than anyone else could think. I headcanon that Chuuya even has said some very hurtful things to Dazai from time to time and has regretted them terribly. That there were points when Chuuya broke Dazai right back.
Soukoku are equals in ways not many would think. They are soulmates. I'm pretty sure if there's someone who could hurt Dazai for real, it isn't even Mori, but Chuuya.
I bet they struggled at some points to understand when their bickering was okay and when it actually came too far and one or both got genuinely hurt.
Chuuya keeps much to himself, so I think everyone should be absolutely terrified for the moment he actually bursts. Genuinely bursts.
