Hi, all, Apex Society is returning this Wednesday! I wanted to wait till I finished up the art for #25 before I started posting anything publicly, which I now am. Here are some character designs for the next issue, which I've already begun working on.

Just a life update. I've long had issues with headaches. I seem to have a type called "cluster headaches" which happen in bunches and then go away for a period of time. The clusters usually last a few weeks at most and then I have a few months off from them, but the most recent cluster lasted a long, long time and the headaches were particularly bad (and I couldn't get rid of them with Tylenol, ice packs, etc. like I usually could before). On the few days when I was free of them, I wanted to get stuff done but chose smaller art projects like the creature designs. Comic pages generally take 2 or three days to complete from start to finish, and I could never guarantee I'd be headache-free the next day. It's now been a week without a major headache, thank god, but I'm left exhausted from the whole ordeal. I have a doctor's appointment scheduled for next week, so we'll see if anything can be done. If it is cluster headaches, there's no cure, but maybe there's something to better manage the pain? I don't know.
I really want to get back to comic pages- there are only 4 pages left in the current issue - but I still need a bit of rest before I dive back into it.
Anyway, in the meantime, here's a quick Moonchild dress design done in a cartoony style I'm playing around with.

A race of bird people ruling over the largest empire in the Andromeda Galaxy, the Shrii have countless colonies and subject worlds. They've been at it so long that their species has branched off into different evolutionary paths due to distance and differing environmental factors of their settlements. The Duck-People of Eggworld are thought to be the result of a colony that long ago got cut off from the Empire and forgot their origin. Subject worlds - those planets within the Empire populated by other, "lesser" races - are ruled over by small councils of Shrii governors who use enforcers pulled from local populations. These enforcers typically dress in bird-themed armour as a symbol of Shrii power. The Shrii military, which does the conquering of said subject worlds, is composed of many different species from throughout the Empire - notably the Edzikorians, who are usually deployed as shock troops in ground invasions. The Shrii's central government is monarchical, but with a powerful Senate, and the two often find themselves at odds with one another. The monarchy keeps a regiment of superpowered individuals loyal to them on retainer as a failsafe for what they would consider too much democratic encroachment into their affairs.
This design represents the Imperial Race of the Shrii, who reside in the Core Worlds of their Empire. They wear clothing, but I wanted to get their basic anatomy down first before designing any of that.
The Shrii are inspired by a combination of the Shi'ar Empire from X-Men and the Thanagraians from DC Comics.

Andromeda Galaxy: Edzikorians.
Edzikor is a planet covered in volcanoes in the Andromeda Galaxy. The environment is uninhabitable for most species (for the heat, lava, and toxic gasses that cover the world) but the Edzikorians thrived there by evolving the ability to naturally take in surrounding rocks and metals to create extremely hard shells. Their soft bodies underneath can contract and expand within this nearly impenetrable armour. Edzikor was conquered long ago by the birdlike people of the Shrii Empire and have been used as highly effective shock troops within their military structure, though they always return to their homeworld to mate and reproduce because spawn born offworld can't develop their armoured coating.
Inspired by a real-life animal called the scaly-foot gastropod (also known as the volcano snail) that live in hydrothermal vents in the Indian Ocean that reach up to 400 degrees Celsius.

Counter-Earth - The Witchbird.
A species of three-headed carrion fowl common to Ezkeel, the farthest moon of Clarion. The Witchbird, so-named because of its distinctive bony crests and head-plumage that superficially resemble stereotypical witch hats, flies above the barren, rocky terrain of its small world searching for carcasses to devour. The middle head holds the largest, dominant brain, while the other two have small, hind-brains. Their calls sound like women cackling. Despite the species' name, the Witchbird possesses no inherent magical properties.
Inspired by the common trope of the trio of witches, and also that weird, two-heated talking vulture from the Looney Tunes short Transylvania 6-5000.

The Ranki-Baas are an alien species from the Andromeda Galaxy. Seen as a barbarian race by most of the universe, the Ranki-Baas didn't develop space travel on their own but had it introduced to them by visitors. However, their resource-limited homeworld made them an unattractive prospect for invaders and traders alike. Ranki-Baas culture is simple in its aesthetic tastes - making things for mostly utilitarian purposes and avoiding ornamentation or art-for-art's sake. The main exception is in their songs, which are renowned abroad, even by those who dismiss other aspects of their culture. Singing is extremely important to them - in fact, several wars have been fought solely because a tribal chief or two wanted a venue to showcase a new acapella war chant or the like. They each have two throats, which aid in their ability to harmonize.
Ranki-Baas only have one sex, with each member having both male and female features. In a mating scenario, both participants tend to give birth. The have live births, but the young are soon after suspended in nutrient-rich mud until they reach adolescence, when they emerge healthy and strong. Ranki-Baas have expandable throats, like the bullfrog of Earth, with are used in threat displays. Their "horns" are actually the upper canine tusks, which grow upward and pierce through their skin.
Inspired by the Goblins/Orcs from the Rankin/Bass Tolkien movies. I always liked their designs (even though they're not remotely book-accurate) and they always had the best songs. Their gestation period is based on the infamous "Orc Pods" from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies.

Eggworld is a planet in the Andromeda Galaxy that is inexplicably shaped like a giant bird egg. It's home to a race of intelligent creatures that resemble flightless and vaguely humanoid versions of the waterfowl of Earth. This is the planet's greatest adventurer, Geras Gander - accompanied by his great-great-great-great granddaughter, Wadelle Fowler, and her adopted son Pinion.
A riff on Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck comics and the DuckTales cartoons that were based on them, with a bit of Howard the Duck's origin thrown in. Let's also say they enjoy a game similar to hockey as a nod to that weird Mighty Ducks cartoon from the 90s.
