Here's some art pieces from last fall I made for my Illustration and LGBT History classes.
Left is an editorial illustration inspired by the apprehension around Clarence Thomas' plans in the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned, while the right is a scene from The Women's House of Detention by Hugh Ryan, a history of the institution with the same name that used to stand in Greenwich Village in New York, as well as an in-depth commentary on the history and legality of gay and trans rights, and the American prison system. Excerpt from the book that inspired the art below the cut!
About five hundred feet separated the prison from the bar, the incarcerated and the liberated, the forgotten and the immortalized. Five hundred feet between those who "birthed" the modern gay rights movement and those the movement had ignored. Some of those incarcerated had windows that looked down on Christopher Street. They would have heard the sirens and the screams, smelled the burning trash, and flocked to see what was happening.
Arcus Flynn was driving home late that night from her job as a nurse, wending through the streets around Washington Square when she noticed something strange: small points of light, flying through the sky. When she pulled over, she realized they were fires—little burning things being thrown from the windows of the House of D. As she got out of her car, she could hear them inside: dozens, maybe hundreds, of voices screaming, "Gay rights, gay rights, gay rights!" That, she would later tell interviewers, was how she first realized Stonewall was happening (Ryan, 273).
idk the timeline of your romance but congratz on your engagement or already happened wedding! Whichever it is!
Thank you!!! I've been with my partner for almost 2 and a half years, but it'll probs be another 2 or so before we get married since I'd like to at the very least finish school first haha. But I'm SO excited I can't wait to plan for it 🥹🥹
For one of my advanced illustration projects this sem we had to do a 3 page comic of whatever we wanted, so I chose cute moments I've had with my partner 💕💕
