9:24  P.M.  SATURDAY,  JUNE  21     —     218  JUNIPER  LANE.  it’s  late  evening  in  shadyside  and  the  humidity  is  so  thick  you  can  practically  feel  it  weighing  down  on  your  chest.  every  window  is  open  in  the  riley  residence,  box  fans  whirring  to  break  up  the  stale  summer  air.  at  best,  the  heat  is  just  getting  pushed  around,  not  out;  jordan  riley  has  resorted  to  standing  in  her  kitchen  with  her  head  in  the  freezer,  hoping  it’ll  cool  her  off  enough  to  feel  like  a  person  again.  she  almost  jumps  when  there’s  a  sharp  knock  at  the  screen  door,  and  then  excitement  sets  in     —     pizza’s  here!

except  there’s  no  pizza  delivery  boy  on  the  other  side  of  the  screen  door.  the  moment  her  eyes  take  in  the  face  of  known  sunnyvaler  mickey  altieri,  she  instinctively  reaches  for  the  door  in  full,  intending  to  slam  it  in  his  face     —     until  she  hones  in  on  the  details.  black  eye,  bruised  cheek,  cut  lip     —     not  the  typical  look  someone  from  the  right  side  of  the  tracks  would  be  sporting.  brows  arch  up,  surprise  clearly  showing  on  her  face  as  she  meets  his  eyes  and  frowns.        ❛  what  the  hell  happened  to  you?  ❜

                          𝐀  𝐒𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐃  𝐎𝐅  𝐇𝐎𝐏𝐄            [  .  .  .  ]            admittedly  small  ,  yet  nonetheless  carrying  with  it  the  𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦  𝘰𝘧  𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺  .    already  he  has  made  it  further  than  he’d  anticipated  .    if  he  were  a  betting  man  he  would  have  put  money  on  her  slamming  the  door  in  his  face  by  now    ,    probably  stamping  on  his  foot  first  for  good  measure  .    —      but  here  they  are    ,    with  exactly  zero  door  slammings      ﹠      all  of  his  toes  still  intact  .

                          ❝            wait  ‘til  you  see  the  other  guy  .            ❞                    it  certainly  has  the  correct  𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯  for  a  joke    ,  yet  it  is  delivered  with  a  𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗲  rather  than  his  usual  crooked  grin    ,    flicker  of  mirth  often  to  be  found  within  warm  browns  now  but  an  extinguished  flame  .      —      there  is  truth  to  his  words    ;    despite  what  𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘥    ﹠      𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥  appearance  may  suggest    ,    he  had  been  the  one  to  come  out  of  the  fight  far  better  off  than  his  opponent  .    unfortunately  for  mickey  however    ,    the  sweet  taste  of  𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆  does  nothing  to  counteract  the  metallic  tang  of  blood  ‘pon  his  tongue  .    

                        he  shifts  awkwardly  from  foot  to  foot    ,    hands  buried  deep  in  his  pockets    ,  unsure  whether  to  wait      ﹠      hope  she  invites  him  in  or  to  simply  ask  for  entry  .    𝘩𝘦𝘧𝘵𝘺  𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩  falls  from  split  lips    ,    left  hand  slipping  out  from  the  confines  of  his  pocket  for  digits  to  comb  through  messy  locks    ,    and  it  is  with  an  almost  𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀  that  his  eyes  will  once  again  lock  with  hers  .                        ❝            can  we  talk  ?            ❞
