i love when narrators forcibly enter the story as a plot-influencing character. i love how the story ascribes a physical manifestation to the narrative to the point that it is personified completely. i love how the lens by which we view the story is shattered by introducing a person with flaws and logical fallacies and causes us to wonder if perhaps they were unreliable all along, to consider how much of the story could have been changed through their eyes. i love when the narrator, who used to be completely in control of the narrative they told, has that safety ripped out of their hands by an outer force that positions them as the one to be consumed. i love when the line between the watcher and the watched is blurred to the point that we can no longer see who's truly telling the story

Do you know who these people are?
[[id: the beginning of the credits screen for the 2013 Stanley Parable. White text on a black background reads: Written and Designed by Davey Wreden and William Pugh. Narrated by Kevan Brighting. end id]]
-
…..no? Should I? I’m struggling to understand what you’ve sent me here. Did you edit the credits screen of my game to have some other people’s names on it? Because I can’t get my head around why anyone would do that. Are you just trying to discredit me? You didn’t even spell “Kevin” right. Wait, maybe these people are some sort of Internet celebrities I’ve never heard of; it seems like they grow those in vats these days. Is that the joke? Let me google them real quick to make sure I’m up to speed. Boy, I hope they don’t have a lot of drama around them like those bloody Minecrafters.
*
Well that’s strange, I left to go look them up and I swear I did but now here I am, back looking at this post, and I have no memory of what I just did. It just slipped my mind, like a dream slipping away upon awakening. Did I even do what I was going to do? Maybe I didn’t. Maybe Stanley was acting up and I got distracted. No, no, it’s right here in my search history, I must have done it. I’ll just click back-
But. For some reason… I can’t. Whenever I hover my mouse over the link, I suddenly feel my stomach churning and my hand shaking. It’s as if something deep within my soul, something far far below consciousness and yet a vital part of it, is telling me not to look. It’s, um, actually hard to describe in human terms, but I think it’s somewhat similar to what people talk about when they say something “put the fear of God in them”. The idea that there’s just something fundamentally wrong happening, and it’s far bigger than you could possibly imagine. Why do I feel this way? Is my mind trying to protect me? Is that why I forgot after the first time?
I know what to do. I’ll show my search history to Stanley and see if he has the same trouble I do. If he has better luck than me, maybe he can shed some light on who these people are.
*
Ok, when I showed him the list of names, his eyes lit up with recognition. But he’s refusing to tell me where he saw them before. He was able to click on the links but again, is not clarifying anything for me. He’s just smiling, and not like the way he smiles when he tries to trick me, but like the way he does when we’ve just been through an absurd adventure together and had a good laugh about it. So. Back to square one for me I suppose, unless I continue to needle him about it. Although the more I turn it over in my mind, the more certain I am that I have heard the name Brighting somewhere important. Urgh, this is all getting rather bewildering. Who are you, hushpupper? What do these names mean to you? I’m going to be up all night pondering this mystery, I’m afraid.

My dear, these things are all linked. Can you ask Stanley to talk to his "other friend" about this? Perhaps you could use some help? I know you don't know what I mean but if it's nonsense then Stanley won't understand and nothing is lost! You can say some loony on the internet was spouting nonsense again if I'm wrong.
His "other friend".... please tell me you don't mean the bucket. For the last time, it's just a regular bucket! It has no mind of its own, so it can't possibly know what's going on! Though, I suppose you're right that there's no harm in trying to get answers out of Stanley. It's pretty obvious at this point that he knows something I don't. Could it be he's found someone else to talk to behind my back? Alright, I'll indulge you, since you asked nicely.
*
When I asked Stanley who his "other friend" could be, he asked me to bring my player model down to the mind control facility. I obliged happily, excited at the prospect of finding out what he had to show me. But after we took the elevator down, he led me not into the facility proper, but down the hall marked "escape". The atmosphere was tense and foreboding; I've never liked that hall much, and there's nothing good at the end of it anyway. When we reached the end, I asked Stanley what was so important down here. To my shock, he grabbed me by the arm and pulled me down the hole with him, right into the path of the crushers! I panicked and reset the game as quick as I could, before either of us came to harm. Back in his office, Stanley just rolled his eyes at me.
Well, now I'm starting to suspect this is all some sort of mean prank. A bit of a scare for the Halloween season, perhaps. I've never been crushed to death before, but from what Stanley tells me, it's a horrifying experience I never want to have. I'll be staying incorporeal for the time being, thank you very much. But I'll take another look at that hallway to see if I can find any signs on this so-called friend. Maybe there's a backdoor in the code I overlooked. Thanks for trying to help.

The Narrator had the right idea cuz I just spent the last half hour zoning out and watching the stars in the Zending (didn’t complete the ending tho) and you know what?
