Sometimes, in moments of divine clarity, she remembers the last cycle. She remember a therapy-bot with a distaste for organic systems and a fondness for the stars, who loved his ship and his crew and hated being touched without permission.

She remembers him insisting they sit at level and discussing the pain of forever, the fear of loss and the knowledge that change is what makes things constant. She remembers what she knows now to be a god unaware, a soul running from his own shadow - only none could blame him, as that shadow encompassed all who ever heard his name.

She remembers him tonight. She misses him.

"Thanks for being my friend, Rung," she says to the stars, knowing the one she's talking to will and won't hear. It will reach the right address, but the person living there just isn't the same. "I hope you're happy."

Lo felt cut off from her family and community after she gained her powers. She was suddenly Other, something Else, and her drive with finding romance and marriage and kids is at least in part not feeling like Other anymore. She wants to be wanted and welcomed in her entirety, which is part of why she has such a contention with both the "save me" and "step on me" dynamics she attracts. She wants to be wanted, not needed, a presence welcome for her own sake rather than a role to be filled.

And Naomi, rather than losing her family and community after becoming Other, chose to make herself Other (a recluse) after the loss of family and community. Even if that choice was made by illness and confusion, it's a change of cause and effect - and the end result is a different pursuit. She's not concerned with not being Other anymore, but with understanding the loss and rebuilding connections in that context. She doesn't need a romance because her story is about falling in love with life, and with herself.

I don't know, it's just neat.
