The Order of The Avengers (Part 1) - (2021)
A couple of months ago, I asked my followers what kind of Avengers fan art they wanted to see from me and they voted at 81% for the “Medieval / Heroic Fantasy AU” option. Here’s the result, I hope you’ll enjoy it! ♥ A big thank you to @vegetamochi who came up with the title. (Nb: this is an art project, there’s no fic to go with it)
PART 2 IS AVAILABLE HERE

okay I'm reading S&B as a tragedy now, it's absurd to think that the ending and arcs were supposed to make anyone feel good when 1) the de-facto leader of the group that was clearly written to be an oppressed minority dies and leaves said minority in dire straits, 2) the main character is punished for completing the task assigned to her by being stripped of the power that made her who she was, and then 3) ends up with someone who never saw that power as part of her and resented that power because it made him insecure.
How I'm choosing to read it now is: this trilogy is a warning for anyone who sees the world in black and white, anyone too afraid to make their own choices, anyone too afraid of change to let go of their past no matter how it holds them back. Because it's a damn depressing ending and I would love to see a sequel someday where an older Alina regrets the choices she made as a frightened teenager. Why was she so quick to let everyone make choices for her? What would have had happened if she embraced her identity and the culture and people surrounding her? What if she cared more about grisha than about killing the one man that had become a symbol of corrupted power? What if she had understood sooner how the darkling came to his "means justify the ends" mentality rather than believing straight up that oppressed people are bad for seeking a way out of that oppression?
Its a much more compelling story when you read it as what an insecure teenager really would do given the fate of a country. I can't imagine a world where Alina stays happy for the rest of her short life with Mal, ending up right back where she started just because she never grew out of the first relationship she ever remembered having. What will she feel like at 40, decades spent at this orphanage raising other people's children with a man who (literally!!!) couldn't stand to see her shine, while grisha are still suffering globally? It seems to me that the real lesson of the entire series is, when an entire system is corrupted you cannot kill a symbol of that corruption and expect everything to resolve itself.
Maybe Alina wasn't punished for seeking power but for denying it, denying herself the opportunity to follow the difficult path that the darkling had been on for centuries. She didn't want to do the work that the darkling had been doing- groveling to kings to "prove" that his people shouldn't be oppressed, making difficult decisions in an attempt to be free of said oppression, watching centuries pass as essentially nothing changes- so she took the easy fix that was given to her and she lost her power completely. If I try to read this as a happy ending or even an ending that was meant to be satisfying I will go nuts.

The Darkling, Mal, and Alina all just need to wear their get along shirt. That would surely solve any and all problems instantly.
