Maybe it's because they don't look as unique as pond skaters, but I feel like everyone sleeps on whirligig beetles. You have a creature that spends its whole adult life zooming around on water and ganging up to devour any prey that falls in like a bunch of tiny, metallic motorboats mashed up with our cultural image of piranhas. Pond skaters are predatory too but I think a bunch of little whirling zipping killer boat-beetles are a very different aesthetic that's overdue for any kind of use in art and fiction.
