I’ve come to recognize how mental health works with this scenario:
We are all just people shopping at a store. We are waking around picking things up and trying to hold everything and keep it balanced while we continue to look around the store. The ‘items’ you’re picking up are tasks you do and things you have to keep in order for your life to keep moving- ie: hygiene, maintaining relationships, school/job, etc. All of these tasks and responsibilities, both big and small, are items you pick up in the store. Now, some people already have a basket when they enter the store, maybe even a cart, while some people just have their hands. Some people naturally have a basket or cart, while other have to go find ways to get one. The baskets and carts and like your mental health, your ability to maintain your own personal version of life. While yes, you can stumble in the aisles with your arms full, you could also find a cart and easily stroll through the store. Some people find their carts by taking medication, going to therapy, using substances, exercising, or whatever works for them. The point is, we all have to walk into the store, and at some point we are going to leave too. How many things you have with you and how you managed to navigate the aisles can be easy for some but hard for others. Just find your baskets and carts, however you come by them. We all should go to checkout knowing we found everything we hoped to find.

people have pointed out before that zuko probably didn't actually know any of the gaang's names before joining their group. according to the data i've collected, it is unclear as to whether zuko knew any of their names before "the boiling rock," in which he addresses sokka by name multiple times. at no point in the show does he refer to toph, suki, or momo by name.
i find it particularly funny that zuko only seems to refer to katara by name after sokka says her name during their conversation in his tent; the transcript for "the southern raiders" reads as follows:
Sokka: So what's on your mind?
Zuko: Your sister. She hates me! And I don't know why, but I do care what she thinks of me.
Sokka: Nah, she doesn't hate you. Katara doesn't hate anyone. Except maybe some people in the Fire Nation. No, I mean, uh, not people who are good, but used to be bad. I mean, bad people. Fire Nation people who are still bad, who've never been good and probably won't be, ever!
Zuko: Stop. Okay, listen. I know this may seem out of nowhere, but I want you to tell me what happened to your mother.
Sokka: What? Why would you want to know that?
Zuko: Katara mentioned it before when we were imprisoned together in Ba Sing Se, and again just now when she was yelling at me.
we can thus assume that zuko went into this conversation knowing katara only as "[sokka's] sister," heard sokka refer to someone named "katara," and finally connected the dots.
i think the gaang according to zuko is just "the avatar, the avatar's bison, the avatar's.... little rat thing, sokka, sokka's sister, sokka's girlfriend, and, yknow, uhhhhh, the little green one."

Hidden Worldbuilding Detail in ATLA: The Avatar Calendar
SO I GOTTA TALK ABOUT THIS BECAUSE IT’S JUST TOO COOL FOR PEOPLE TO NOT KNOW ABOUT
You know when the Gaang goes to Wan Shi Tong’s library and finds out about the upcoming eclipse by using the calendar wheel? The wheel actually has a fully fleshed-out calendar system inspired by ancient East Asian ones!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From in to out, the rings go Month -> Day -> Era Name -> Chinese Zodiac Year
So the Day of the Black Sun that the dial eventually lands on was the Yangwu Era, Year of the Monkey, the 1st day of the 8th month.
Era Names are a system that originated in ancient China, used to name and number years. So like Jianyuan Year 1, Jianyuan Year 2, and so on. It’s usually just something auspicious or ambitious sounding, like Yongtai 永泰 for “Perpetual Peace” or Daye 大业 for “Great Endeavour.” Every time an emperor declared a new era, the numbering reset. Before the Ming dynasty, emperors could declare a new era basically whenever they felt like it (causing some emperors to go WILD, changing it every few months), but starting from Ming, it was more customary for an emperor to stick with one era name for their entire reign.
Most countries that used era names have abolished them with their monarchies, including China itself, but Japan still uses them. You may have heard a while back that they changed their era name from Heisei to Reiwa with their new emperor.
Now, ATLA has its own set of era names, designed by the show’s calligraphy consultant Dr. Siu-Leung Lee. Here are loose translations of the 16 era names from the Avatar wikia, though note that some of these are VERY loose because they use very obscure characters:
Tumblr media
The most meticulous part is that the first character in each of these has a radical that’s either Air, Water, Earth, or Fire, and they repeat in that pattern.
Tumblr media
The era the show takes place in is 氜武 (Yangwu), with an air radical, which strongly suggests that these era names change according to Avatar. But it’s unclear if these 16 era names rotate in a cycle (which was not how era names worked) or if a new one is made up for each avatar and the wheel gets magically updated.
Regardless, it’s an amazingly detailed system that isn’t even remarked on in show, so they did all this work JUST to enrich the world for a few shots in a single episode. That’s dedication.
See my deep dive on all of season 2 for more details like this
