My "appreciation", if we wanna call it that, for Durgetash is... complicated
Not a Durgetash truther in the sense of wishing for Larian to script in a happy ending, that Gortash was a consensual, caring, true lover and partner to Durge.
Definitely a Durgetash truther in the sense of a deeply tragic, toxic, and debilitating mistake of an entanglement. I'm not seeing the cute little moments between scheming to undo the world (tho the jokes are funny and the art is great) but I do see two incredibly terrible terrible people, incapable of true affection with no real capacity for love but still drawn to one another, thrown into each others lives, who couldn't stop hurting each other, using each other, breaking each other.
I'm here for Gortash not realizing the nature of his feelings until Durge is a feral half-lucid beast on an operating table and the terror sets in that he has to do this without them.
I'm here for Durge not realizing it until Gortash is bleeding out on the floor in front of them, brief flashes of a barely remembered existence, finally recontextualized through the real, genuine affection they got to experience from their current LI, the truth settling in their stomach like bile.
I'm here for the pain of two broken people not being able to see love for what it was and the tragedy of realizing that no matter what, there was never any alternative, never any fixing things, just the scars to carry for what's left of Durge's life.
people vaguely saying 'the horrors' as shorthand for 'life problems, don't worry about it' in conversations where the problems are not going to be delved into has got to be one of my favorite new Ways Of Speaking that has emerged. like it's polite and vague and succinct enough for impersonal conversation but also extremely honest. it's very funny. The Horrors. we all know of them.
Hey you know what's super funny about the idea of "good bi rep"?
For a character to be canonically bi you have to make sure and establish that they're attracted to multiple genders. Not all mediums allow you to get inside every character's head or show what they're thinking. Flirting can be read ambiguously, and god forbid they flirt with a character who's not into them and be read as pushy or predatory. So it can be super handy to just mention an ex or two! But you better not mention too many exes because that would make them a slutty bisexual which is (checks notes) bad, and you definitely better be careful about making them poly, because that might make them, uh... greedy. Oh, and those exes? They better be perfectly amiable breakups with no conflict or drama, because it's bad to represent queer people in toxic or abusive relationships (especially queer women! very bad), and you definitely can't have them have lost a partner if the partner was queer because that's "bury your gays..." You should probably also eliminate all trauma from their backstory, just to be safe. You should probably also make sure they're not involved in crime, deception, or anything of the sort, because that would make them "deviant" and a stereotype.
But don't worry! Once you've carefully crafted your nice, monogamous, experienced-but-not-too-experienced Lawful Good bi character, you will be rewarded with your audience deeming them "boring" and quickly passing them over for other characters. :)
must a fictional relationship be “healthy” or “functional”? is it not enough to simply watch two made up people destroy each other, hand in unlovable hand???
It's truly so funny letting Astarion drink your blood when you aren't romancing him and absolutely do not want to. Like I'm so sorry man I know you're really laying it on thick with the "sweet thing" and "darling" and lascivious innuendos but I'm literally just being a bro. I don't mind you drinking my blood because I care about you, as a homie tho. Sorry.
This comic was inspired by the excellent idea of using The Last Unicorn dialogue for Astarion’s story from @fangsandfeels and the lovely comic made by @solmesia depicting it. You can see the original post here and the comic here.
When I read the original idea I thought that this also potentially works in reverse for a redemption Dark Urge who is horrified by their monstrousness. I did edit and add to the original dialogue for my own purposes.
(Also I really think it would have been cool if slayer form worked more like an uncontrollable werewolf-like curse rather than a gift you have to seek out.)
