* * *
Looking back on it the next day, it wasnât so bad. Chan wasnât actually that bad at taking notes, itâs just that his writing could get really messy, and he forgot to put most of the dates on the notes.
âThis is history, the only other place where numbers near words are this important is chemistry! How do you, of all people, forget dates?â
âWas that a dig at my reputation?â
âThat was a dig at your note-taking skills.â
And you discovered that he actually wasnât half bad to talk to, now that flirting was out of the conversation. He was good on his word and the other guys bothered you a lot less, Minho would occasionally throw a flirty comment your way, but you honestly donât think that boy can talk without flirting or snarking.
Your next meet up for studying (you refused to call them study dates, if only not to give Chan that satisfaction) was a week after the library incident. You decided to meet up at the cafe near your workplace, you had a shift right after so it was very convenient, and Chan didnât object. The cafe wasnât particularly cute or in any way special except that it was a heaven for students and businessmen who needed their coffee fix and a place to work on essays and reports at odd hours. Open 24/7 with great wifi and nice, if tired, baristas this place was all you could ask for, including some baked goods, nobody can (or rather, nobody should) survive on caffeine alone.
You got there first and had your lecture notes and textbook out by the time Chan came through the doors, a motorbike helmet in hand and backpack slung over his shoulder. You swear you could hear all the girls swooning.
Yes he looks good you donât have to droo- wait, did you just admit that he looks good? Ok you really need to add at least half an hour to your sleeping time, this is getting ridiculous.
âSo, howâs your day been?â Chan set his helmet on a seat next to his occupying the one opposite you.
âFine, havenât felt like killing people yet. Iâm assuming you brought your mess of notes?â You tried not to grin at his scowl, it was comically big, like a literal cartoon.
âAs if your lecture notes are any better.â Chan rolled his eyes at you, getting his notes out.
âThey actually are.â You gestured to the somewhat neat notes in front of you, lecture notes are not expected to be neat but yours were not as bad as some so you have reason to be proud.
âAre you sure you should be taking this class?â He said after a moment of staring at the papers. âYou need to be in some advanced class or something.â
âThanks?â You didnât really know how to respond. (compliments are difficult)
âYouâre welcome, but thatâs not why I pay you-â
âYou donât pay me, we agreed on that.â
âI pay you in food.-â
âI prefer coffee.â
âANYWAY.â He gave you a pointed stare, and you raised your hands in defeat, but you couldnât hold back a grin. âCan you please tell me what the heck the Whiskey Rebellion was all about? Cause I am lost on that.â
âOkay so what happened was-â
And so actual studying commenced. You were pleasantly surprised by how well Chan recieved information when you took the time to explain it and use less complicated terms than the professor prefered. This also helped you retain information better so it was a win-win situation, as far as you were concerned.
Of course your study sessions werenât without breaksâŚ
âOkay, Iâm sorry but I donât think I heard the last five minutes of that over my grumbling stomach.â Chan sighed stretching a little in his seat.
âDang I didnât even notice how much time passed. I guess we could pause for a snack break.â You got up, stretching out your sore back.
âCome on,â He pulled you to the small line. âI know they have some really good croissants and Iâve heard the lattes are to kill for, or that may be just a Seungmin thing.â
âThe killing or the lattes?â
âBoth, to be honest.â Chan shrugged.
You hummed âWeâd get along then, youâll have to introduce me sometime.â
âNo offence, but that sounds terrifying.â
âHey!â
By that time you got to the front of the line and the cashier, a guy you vaguely recognized as part of Chanâs friend group, smiled at you guys, a real smile not a customer service one.
âSup, Hyunjin?â Chan greeted him easily.
âNothing much, which half of the menu are you eating today?â There was a teasing glint in his eye.
Chan rattled off a list, and yeah, it did sound like about half the menu. You stifled a laugh when Hyunjin looked at you with a âwhat did I tell youâ face as he punched in Chanâs order.
âAlright, and anything for your date?â
âFriend.â Chan beat you to it.
âSorry, anything for the lady?â He rephrased in an overly flirty tone, and that really made you laugh.
âAre all your friends like this?â You looked over at Chan who was shooting Hyunjin a âreally dude?â look, which only made you laugh more.
âI promise they can actually behave.â
âI was only joking!â Hyunjin defended, dropping the flirtatious tone. âBut really, do you want anything?â
âJust a latte and a couple croissants, I plan on stealing some more food from Chanâs plate anyway.â
âGood luck with that, youâll be lucky to see even a glimpse of that food before he devours it.â
âOkay can we stop making fun of my eating habits?â
âNever.â His friend said with an overly innocent grin.
Chan groaned while you and Hyunjin snickered over his pain.
âMan, just let me pay and go before you gang up against me any more.â Chan begged getting his wallet out.
âHold up, when did I say youâll be paying for my food?â You held up a hand.
âYou didnât but I did.â He smiled at you, and you could see the traces of the flirt in it, but you let it slide in favor of arguing your case.
âAnd since when-â
âSorry girl, he already paid.â Hyunjin piped up.
âI thought you were on my side!â You gave him a betrayed look.
He had the audacity to shrug.
âCome on, weâre holding up the line.â Chan pulled you aside and back to the table.
âReally? Not letting me pay? Isnât that toeing the line a bit?â You glared at Chan half heartedly as you sat at your table again.
âYouâre tutoring me basically for free, I might as well pay for the food.â He said simply, clearing the table a little.
After a second of huffing and being slightly annoyed by his logic you let out a breath. âOkay you have a point.â You begrudgingly admitted before helping clear away some of the notes so there was room for the food.
It arrived shortly and there was a lot of it. There was a joyful, if somewhat predatory, glint in his eye when Chan saw the food. From the way it was served, you could safely assume that Chan was a regular. There was no attempt whatsoever made to plate the food in an appealing way, the only requirement was it not falling off the plates. You were able to snag a cookie from the pile of goodies and raised it triumphantly to Hyunjin by the cash register. He gave you a thumbs up before turning to greet another customer.
