My partner Bambi has been working with the Department of Vocational Rehab, a govt department meant to help disabled people find work, for six months with no actual luck despite hundreds of applications. Their job coordinator dropped them yesterday morning, and they were told that most places won't hire people who still wear masks to interviews. Bambi has a bachelor's in education, and nobody will even call back. Not even for city bus driver jobs that they're allegedly desperate for people.

I have been going through a gauntlet of medical bullshit for the last few years, and last year alone was in the ER twice. This year I've had a colposcopy and a LEEP and tomorrow I'm having a colonoscopy and on top of all this I'm trying to get financial aid for school to come through to help us with rent. I start school in May.

what's the melody exercise you mentioned?

i love songwriting but i'm not particularly gifted at writing melodies, so to train the muscle i set the lyrics of an existing song (that i have never heard) to an original tune. it gets me out of my head and lowers the stakes compared to writing melodies for my own songs. i just pick songs with lyrics i like, and often from artists i'm vaguely familiar with, but that i'm not overly attached to. so for example, i'd never heard Today I Started Loving You Again, but it popped up on my dashboard and i liked the title, so i pulled up the lyrics and sat down at the piano. really like the result, used some funky ass chords.

and of course when i like the result i can eventually repurpose that melody for songs of my own!
