Learning Mandarin resource recommendation
youtube
Yesterday I studied with this video and I needed to share!
First of all, this was great for my level. I passed HSK 3 two years ago, but I haven't been very active with my studies and am planning to just redo it next year because HSK 4 would be way too much of a stretch to pick up.
Secondly, the structure of the lesson is great!
First it goes through the video little by little, explaining some keywords and giving an example sentence for each. So basically you get two example sentences. After the word is learnt you get to see and hear the clip once more. The teacher will explain everything in simple Mandarin, and highlight words or items that are being discussed on screen.
Then there is a review of the newly learnt words. After that there will be a transcript of the show without pinyin, with highlighting of what part of text is being read out loud. And lastly there will be questions that can be answered with the lines from the show!
Now, why I found this format really good? Aka, the rambling part:
I personally really enjoyed this type of structure. I find the repetition crazy good, because it is varied and the last two parts actually give me time time to look at the characters and sentence structures while associating the words with the context. Let's just say that I'm not a fan of flashcards, because I do no find that fun so this was very helpful to get that repetition going without getting bored and frustrated.
The way I study with learning videos in youtube is to watch the video first and then dump it in my playlist named 汉语. Yes, very creative, I know~ Then when I have time to study I rewatch the video and make notes in my trusted notebook. Sometimes it's the next day and other times like with this video, over a year. In this way I get to check if the video is helpful before beginning to write down notes. And it allows for that repetition I keep talking about here.
Anyway, going back to the video. The first go through is really slow and while it was a little painful for my brain, it also allowed me to pause the video for writing down notes without having to be super quick. Sometimes I find videos too fast to go to next words and I have to really try hard to pause at the right time after focusing on the teaching first. So I really appreciated how you got the new word, the example sentence and then it was back to the new word, giving me another opportunity to pause instead of having to go back in the video to find the right frame.
Also, the words to be taught are featured in either a yellow or black background. The visual learning part of my brain loved that, as well as the extra pictures presented all through the video.
This channel seems to also feature other movie clips, news clips, songs and stories to learn from. I did watch a movie clip before and found it equally good compared to this particular video.

How I prep for a new semester at uni:
I make a new time block sheet. I put all my classes in, then my commute time. From there I plan study hours, when I need to wake up to not feel rushed, work hours, etc. This plan helps to keep me from getting too overwhelmed and let me feel like I have everything under control.
I do my school shopping on prime day or after the back to school rush. You'll find those nice multi subject notebooks on sale for cheap and fun stationary and backpacks a lot cheaper like this!
I try to get a head start in classes. If I know we're reading a book or something I'll start a couple weeks before school starts. I try to take notes on as many chapters/subjects as I can and all that. This not only helps me get ahead, but it also helps me for when I inevitably fall behind.
I get all the routine maintenance done on my car. I drive over an hour to get to classes so this is very important. Oil change, tire rotation, balance, filters, etc. I save up my summer tips to get all this done.
I stock up on easy and fast foods. Instant noodles, granola bars, frozen meals, etc. Between working a lot and doing classes I don't have the energy to cook and do dishes so this saves me.
I give myself little reasons to get excited. The teacher or the campus or a friend. Whatever it may be. I HAVE to have a reason to drive that long to attend a class for an hour and come back and not get stressed.
I make a food budget. It's so easy to spend $150 a week on snacks and treats and coffees and such. So I have to set a budget and a plan for myself so I can actually pay my rent haha
I plan my walks to classes on campus. Where I'll park, how much time I have between classes, how to get there, etc.
If I have late classes, I make sure that I can call someone after every class as I walk to my car to make sure I'm safe.
Plan little treats and rewards. If I realize there's a week that's going to be super hard on me, I'll plan a little early morning walk or something special I don't do often after as a reward.
I try to be more positive to myself the closer the semester comes. I have to be proud of me and my work. I have to be confident in my abilities. So I have to have that mindset. Which is super hard as someone with severe anxiety and depression and who has been conditioned growing up to be quiet and a background character essentially. But I AM good. I AM smart. I can ace these classes. I deserve to be here and I deserve good things.
I triple check with my job to make sure they have my updated availability and will give me the flexibility I require due to my classes.
Overall, I just get my shit together once again and try and get myself excited. I have the opportunity to study at a university and that in itself is absolutely amazing and something I don't take for granted.

I have seen people on tumblr saying you can't use the word nonverbal to describe not being able to talk sometimes if you are able to talk at all other times. And it really rubs me the wrong way bc like. That is the word for the symptom. That is the word all my Special Ed teachers used for me when I was not speaking. That is the word my doctors used for me, the word my mental health doctors used for me as a kid and still use for me now.
This is something I do experience, it's just not a constant state for me, but it is very real and it does cause problems in my life. There literally isn't another word I have seen or can think of to refer to the symptom that is medically called nonverbal.
I don’t think it’s the same experience being constantly nonverbal vs sometimes, but I also don’t know what other word is supposed to be used and I am curious if it is actually hurting anyone or not to have a word have different meanings in different contexts. And if it is hurting people to have it mean both things, isn't it also hurting people to take away one of the meanings? It doesn't seem right, idk. I literally don't have another word to describe my experience with this.
It seems like it may be an attempt to differentiate between “serious nonverbal” and “it doesn’t matter cause it’s not all the time non verbal” which doesn’t seem correct at all to separate disabled people into groups of "super real disabled" and "lite not really disabled" because when has that ever helped anyone, all I've ever seen that do is divide community and alienate people who are still believe it or not actually disabled.
I dont know what other word I can use to describe my medical symptom. I don't understand why I am suddenly not allowed to use the word that has been used for me forever by anyone who might have a say in what the right word would be. I really don't understand how using the correct word for my variable disability symptom is going to hurt people who use the same word for their constant disability symptom.
All I can see here is the erasure of variable and invisible disabilities. Idk. If you think im way off course then I welcome feedback, but I will not engage with people who just come to be angry assholes. I want a real discussion about this.

How I Use Google Calendar To Organize My Life
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those who know me know that I’m a pretty busy person, and the past few semesters have been insanely hectic. As a result, I quickly became addicted to google calendar to keep track of my many commitments. I tried bullet journalling and list making, but this ended up being way more portable and cross-compatible for my preference. Above are examples of moderately busy weeks across two different semesters. It may look overwhelming, but it’s a system that works super well for me, and if it even helps a single person, then this post will have been worth it.
To begin, my color coding system is as follows:
Orange: Classes that I need to attend
Light Pink: Scheduled work shifts
Dark Pink: Campus and social events that I have committed to attend
Red: Big Scary Deadlines that I reaaally don’t want to miss
Purple: Assignments that are due soon / studying that I need to finish
Green: (not pictured) birthdays, errands and personal goals
The color coding helps my brain compartmentalize the importance of upcoming tasks so that I don’t freak out. I don’t set reminders on any of the events because I don’t want to clutter the notifications on my devices. Instead, I have google calendar set up as a widget on my phone and laptop home screens, and I check either every hour or so to make sure I’m on top of everything / know where I need to go. In terms of adding events, I enter that as early as possible. Every time a new date is shared, I immediately pull out my phone and note it down. That way, I never forget.
I do my best to fit all my necessary tasks between 8 am and 11 pm, because it leaves time for me to hang out with my friends and get plenty of rest. However, I don’t really time block homework and studying since that always takes longer than I anticipate. Instead, I just mark when I need to start by, and usually once I start something, I don’t move until I’ve finished it. If I have the motivation, I can easily move tasks to earlier dates, or shuffle things around in case of conflicts. Lastly, any free gaps on the calendar can be used however I want, and that usually entails watching YouTube videos, hanging out with friends, running errands or cooking. The free gaps also help when I want to make plans, because I have a precise understanding of my availability several weeks in advance. That’s about it - hope it helps!

Struggling to stay organized because you have ADHD?
Well, I have a fantastic solution for you! There’s this bitchin site called Trello and I’m gonna tell you all about it
This is not sponsored, I just really like organization and Trello is awesome. And, as always, no readmore because this is targeted at ADHD people and y’all ain’t gonna click it
Tumblr media
[ID: a picture of a website with many columns/lists. Behind the lists, there is a customized background. To the right is a sidebar showing that you can search Unsplash for backgrounds right from the site. Each column/list has a bunch of ‘cards’ on it. The cards each have a title and color coded label(s) /end ID)
Here’s a picture of my to-do board
There are some things blacked out, mostly just my avatar, name, and some original creative stuff I don’t feel like broadcasting.
So, Trello is broken up into different levels of organization. Let’s start with the most important level: boards.
Boards
A board is what’s pictured above. Think of it like a corkboard where you pin your notes. You can make as many of these as you want. You can title them, invite people to them, automate certain parts of them, and more.
On your board, you can make
Lists
Lists are those columns you can see on my board. You can title each list, click and drag them around to reorder them, set them to automatically label the things on them, and so on.
My lists on my to do board are titled with a time period for when I aim to do something. The time periods are large and vague, which makes them great for my ADHD. I can move things between them as I need, which is also great for my ever shifting brain thoughts.
But! What makes it great is that whatever I put in the left list, titled Next, I know is what I need to be focusing on at the moment. It makes it easier to ignore what’s to the right of it and let’s me relax knowing I won’t just forget everything I’m not prioritizing.
Lists are used for holding
Cards
Tumblr media
(ID: A picture of a small window that opens after clicking on a card. It contains the title, the labels (with their names now visible), and a functioning checklist. There is also a place to type a description, a place to add comments, and a list of buttons on the side for managing the card and its place on the board /end ID)
Each card can be as simple as containing just a title (making it a simple entry on your list), or as complicated as housing photos, descriptions, checklists, labels, and comments. You just click the card and it opens the window shown above.
My card is for a tabletop I’m working on, nicknamed TAP. I have it labeled with all of the things pertaining to what it involves (world building, writing, in progress, spreadsheeting, and art/creative). These color coded labels make it easy to see what kind of cards I’m looking at when looking at the overall board and lists.
As I do things on the checklist, I can mark them off. You can even set it to hide completed items on the checklist.
When I’m done with an item on my to do list, I click and drag the card to the Done list (which is offscreen on the far right). If you don’t want a visible Done list, you can also just archive a card and it will disappear from the board.
You can also set due dates on cards, which will notify you when they’re almost due or when the due date arrives.
Customization
One of my favorite things about Trello is that you can customize the appearance of your boards! My ADHD brain can’t stand looking at the same thing constantly, so it’s great that I can change things up. Each board can have its own design too, so you can match the vibes of the board with the appearance.
You can pick from a bunch of solid colors for your board or you can use the connection Trello has with Unsplash to search and select free stock images provided by photographers.
Other Parts of Organization
Not only do you have boards, lists, and cards, you can also make Workspaces, which are basically categories to sort your boards into. If you use Trello for projects, and have a board for each project, you can sort your boards into a Projects workspace.
There is also a function called Butler, which you can use to automate boards. For example, you can set it to automatically create a card called “Pay Rent” at the start of each month.
On the right, in the same sidebar where you can see the background options, there’s also an activity feed, tracking every time a card is moved, commented on, added, archived, and so on.
Team Work
Not only is Trello great for keeping private boards, you can also invite people to them! That makes it incredible for household management, group projects, or even friend groups who feel like storing plans and personalized memes. You can literally use it for whatever you want and in whatever way you want!
ADHD Applications
So, now let’s get down into the specifics of how this is great for people with ADHD.
You can make as many boards, lists, and cards as you want.
This is a big one for me, because I really struggle with websites that limit how much you can do with one account and force you to make multiples and then juggle multiple logins and so on. Start a new project? Make a new board. Follow your heart. Be free. If you end up giving up on it, just delete it, or store it for later. You can Star the boards you actively use and just use the Star list to access the boards you need, so if you star all your active ones and then ignore the unstarred, failed projects, you can leave them to rot or abandon them until the mood strikes again.
You can organize in a way that works for you.
So many organization applications are made to work one way and that can be really difficult to navigate as someone with ADHD. So many people with ADHD have such specific needs in regards to how they organize that it can be really hard to find something that works. Half the time we end up just scrambling around from application to application, cursing them as we go because one has one thing we like, but it doesn’t have the thing this other one has that we like and nothing ever seems to just work.
Trello makes it possible to personalize how you organize and even change how you organize halfway through. I keep my to do list organized in 4 priority levels with the addition of a Pin list and a Done list. You could also:
Keep a list that works as a calendar, with a card for each entry, organized in order of date
Keep a list of reminders where automated weekly/monthly/yearly responsibilities pop up
Jot down reminders as you think of them
Keep lists of school assignments in the order they’re due
Use descriptions and photo uploads on cards to collect information or resources needed for said assignments
Keep lists of information that’s easy to forget or lose track of on paper like address history, work history, references, contact information, and so on (like I’ve done on my ‘Pin’ list)
Use boards for projects, to keep track of things like resources, due dates, meeting times, sending files between classmates or project partners, and so on
Use boards for planning events like weddings, parties, conferences, school dances, or whatever else you’re into
Collect resources, references, or recreational to-dos (like links to fanfiction you want to read)
Literally anything
You can separate everything onto different boards, making everything visible from the titles of cards, or combine it all into one, with lots of information available on a click
The sky’s the limit
You can automate repeat tasks.
ADHD comes with a lot of forgetfulness when it comes to regular tasks, such as weekly appointments, medication reminders, and a yearly charge for your Nintendo membership. You can put that stuff into your calendar, but that can also be tricky because then you have information spread across multiple platforms.
Just as easily, you can set Butler to make new cards with reminders on them.
There’s probably more but I have ADHD and I forgot
Just think of the possibilities!!
I used to get debilitatingly stressed out because I would have 10 things floating around in my head because I was simultaneously trying not to forget them and also stressing about them and I would make what I call “spaghetti lists” where I would list all the things I’m thinking of, just as a way to calm down and know that I won’t forget them, so that my brain could quiet down.
Since starting this board, I haven’t had to do that once because all of the things I’m afraid of forgetting are already listed, even if they’re on the list titled ‘ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ‘ because idk if they’re ever actually gonna happen.
It can be incredibly stressful to see all of your to do items in one place, but since starting this, I have been less stressed overall, because I now know I can find them all in that one place. Learning to manage and cope with the stress of knowing I have a lot to do is easier than forgetting things and then realizing I’m late on something or things just never happening because I never remember them when I’m in a place where I can work on them.
And when you have everything in one place to reference when you have some executive energy, you can suddenly just start doing things. I have them labeled by type so I can go, “I’m in the mood to draw,” and then check all the dark blue labels for creative projects. It makes everything so much easier.
Anyway, I hope this is helpful to some of you, it’s genuinely been life changing for me

been doing some new year planning, so thought i should document a little and share how i like to plan out my years :) MUCH more detail under the cut 🌱💗 and a free template here if you like to use notion for this stuff!
overview 🌱
there are a couple of principles behind why i do this kind of yearly planning in one spot:
awareness — keeping yourself accountable for the goals you set at the beginning of the year
documentation — writing down stuff you’ve done so you can see what progress youve made towards goals. fun to look at
planning — makes it easier to plan your weeks and to be more intentional with how you’re spending time and enjoying life
how it works ✨
my yearly pages are sorted into a "goals" section, and a "records" section. one is forward looking, one is reflecting on stuff that's happened. i usually revisit this page at least once a month.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It doesn't have to be on Notion, but I prefer using a digital tool so things are easy to access. Paper-based is totally fine -- whatever works for you. The main point is to have a structure. Additionally, I don't really need to accomplish my goals, as long as I'm working towards them. However, setting ambitious goals for myself helps me make progress, and gets me excited about working towards them :)
goals 🌻
Whenever I have an idea of something I want to do, I put it down as a goal in this database. But my rule for myself is that, at any given time, I can only have five goals that I can focus on. I give myself double that amount as goals to maintain, to work towards them but without dedicating as much time to them. Then I have idle goals that I want to keep in my head and to work towards when I have the time and energy to, but otherwise don't make any real plans towards them.
Tumblr media
After setting my goals (which are not time-bound, i.e. I don't have a specific deadline to achieve them), I set yearly milestones for the ones I want to focus on. These have an end-of-year deadline, and must be measurable so I can work towards them in a tangible way. Then I break the goal into 12 parts, so I have a measurable milestone to work towards each month. Each month, I look at my goal and divide it into weeks, so I know what I'd like to accomplish that week. I keep it pretty open-ended and flexible because life happens and is unpredictable.
Tumblr media
I have other goals that I don't focus on as much. They're still important to me, but I want to prioritize the others. To avoid procrastinating and thinking about goals instead of working towards them, I've decided to keep it simple this year.
records ✍️
the next section is about writing things that made the year good — it’s a joy to look back on them every time i open the page and reminds me that there is a lot of joy in every day life, beyond just accomplishing stuff. every month i usually write down what i can think of under the following areas (keeping a diary helps for this):
i’m glad for: people, experiences, accomplishments, things, game changers — things that made your year really awesome
things i’ve been obsessed with — makes it fun to look at the things that took up a lot of your brain space
important things i learned & mistakes i made — for your realizations, understandings. over a year you’ll see how you’ve grown and changed.
Tumblr media
that's pretty much it! hope it helps :)

‘Perfect’ White
We can’t have failed to notice that in S5 Gabriel has gone all white…like Cat Blanc. So my wheels got spinning and here I am, exploring the symbolism of this 'colour’.
Many viewers will link white to ideas of innocence, cleanliness or peace. Maybe even holiness - think angels. We’ve even seen Adrien wearing angel wings, in 'Simpleman’.
I once read an excellent analysis, I forget by whom, suggesting that Adrien is often in white to show that he’s a blank slate, waiting to be written on. We even get the word 'blank’ from the Latin root of the French 'blanc’, meaning white. Taking this further, we could see it as Adrien not yet being certain of his own identity.
White is also linked with virginity - think of the Western European wedding dress colour. Applying this symbolically, Adrien begins the story inexperienced and naive, kept ignorant of the ways of the world. He also takes things at face value. But this is definitely changing.
I see irony, as well, because the angelic public image of Adrien hides his 'darker’ thoughts and impulses. White is often linked to simplicity, and Adrien is perhaps most fascinating for being so much more complicated than anyone in his life believes.
We could also see virginity as not being 'used’ yet, and this is ironic too because Adrien is used left and right, by both his father and by Ladybug.
And of course white is honesty. Nothing has been hidden. Adrien is typically the most honest one on the show and the most open with his feelings. An interesting fact I didn’t know before some quick research today is that in ancient Rome, public officials wore white, and their robes were called 'candidus’, which gives us the word 'candidate’ but also 'candid’ meaning honest and frank (because politicians never lie…???). We’ll come back to this later.
White also indicates being innocent of sins or crimes. It tells us Adrien is a victim.
So why is Gabriel all in white?
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the obvious. Scientifically, white is both the source and absence of all colour.
On the one hand, we could see Gabriel in white as him trying to swallow up everything else - think of how colourful the kwamis are, and the way Gabriel tries to consume his son.
Or we could see it as his coldness. Think of the Hans Christian Andersen’s Snow Queen, adapted as Elsa in 'Frozen’ - or 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. White is ice. We also saw this with Cat Blanc - we all talk about his 'ice-blue eyes’ in fan fics.
But Gabriel’s white could also be the antithesis of Cat Noir - white versus black. Gabriel is trapped in s state of mind that Adrien is gradually leaving behind.
Another thing I didn’t know is that author Robert Graves tied white with the moon goddess, who in mythology is usually said to have three faces, standing for the stages of life - childhood (waxing), motherhood (the full moon), and old age (waning). I think Gabriel’s powers are beginning to wane. And although it’s a stretch to say the writers of Miraculous had Graves in mind, there is so much moon symbolism tied into the show that I thought this was interesting to think on nonetheless.
Getting heavier, let’s travel around the world to places like China, where white is the colour of mourning and worn at funerals. This makes white the colour of sadness, which ties up with Cat Blanc’s months of grief and loneliness - but also Gabriel, who literally lives in a mausoleum for his wife and refuses to let go. Suddenly dressing all in white tells us he’s gone all in. This is endgame. He’s totally embodying his grief. And with white being tied to the end of life, it’s a sign that the end of this particular story is nigh.
Now let’s remember the old saying that 'Death rides a pale horse’. This comes from the depiction of the Apocalypse found in The Book of Revelation, at the end of the Bible. In fact, in Celtic tradition, if you see a pure white animal (especially if it has red ears), it’s supernatural and not to be trusted. White is otherworldly and unnatural - about as unnatural as Gabriel making banana pancakes, amiright?
Gabriel is also straddling life and death. He’s been cataclysmed and is now rotting away before our eyes. He’s on that pale horse and has nothing left to lose.
There’s also a suggestion of the unknown - going back to that idea of being a blank slate, Gabriel is a wild card here. When someone like that gets truly desperate, we can no longer predict what he will do. Forcing a cataclysm on himself was definitely the start of this.
Coming back to the notion of honesty - we could apply this ironically to Gabriel, who, in his new white suit, recently shook hands with Nino, as if they were partners working against a common enemy.
On that note, let’s look again at the Latin 'candidus’. This was considered the brightest shade of white, and it gives us the word 'candle’. So, white can be illuminating. We can see this as Adrien heading towards understanding, revelation. Gabriel is posing in the colour of honesty and innocence, but Adrien is soon to see through the pancakes.
On the other hand, Gabriel is slipping into a state of ignorance. He has never gained anything from all this power because he no longer understands love. He claims to do all this for Emilie, but it’s gone far, far beyond that goal. He has reached the point of seeking power for power’s sake.
He could learn a few lessons from Adrien, who reprised his Cat Blanc costume in 'Jubilation’, this time worn as a wedding suit. It stands out because in European-style weddings the bride wears white but not the groom. The dream was a vision of grief and heartache being transmutated into something pure and beautiful - and of new starts. The slate had been wiped clean, ready for a new story to be written.
This leads me to think of the levels of karate. A lot of people don’t realise that after the black belt, there’s a higher level - the white belt. It’s a sign of humility. Returning to the beginning shows an understanding that we never truly master anything. We’re always learning. So Adrien moving from white (Alliance and other ads) to black (Cat Noir) to white again (the wedding vision) tells us he’s completed one journey and is now applying the lessons he’s learned to his next journey in life.
Of course, it was only a dream because he’s not there yet. He needs to learn and deal with the truth about his father first. But all of this is coming.
Because white is the light at the end of the tunnel. As much as my son likes to say the Netflix show tags should now be 'grief’, 'child abuse’ and 'trauma’, I truly see hope in every scene. White wipes the slate clean. Our favourite couple are so close to not a happy ending but a happy new beginning.
