Hi, my brother was diagnosed a couple of months ago and has been struggling a lot with uni work. Do you have any advice for essay writing? Specifically organising thoughts and focusing even for short bursts?
Hello my friend! I'm sorry for the late response.
I have a couple of things to suggest here. If your brother is in a country that allows it, ask for accommodations. This could be extra time, extra breaks for exams, a quiet place for exams, etc. Some unis also offer a reduced course load option where you could be taking a part-time course load but still receive full time funding.
As for essays, I am the wrong person to ask honestly. I still have no idea. Although it definitely depends on the type of essay, what is your brother majoring in and what classes are these essays for? Scientific essays are quite different than historical essays.
I will say that creating a detailed outline helps, as well as creating a word vomit document. ANYTHING that he cuts out of an essay, goes into that document. Anything. Everything.
If any of my followers have any suggestions, please help!

It's fire season. Let's talk.
So, it's fire season here in Alberta. Came early, of course. People are still recovering from last year, and the fires that raged through the off season.
So, let's not be upset when all the smoke comes. People closer have it worse. Wear my KN95 masks, respirators, get your home an air purifier. Donate if and when you can to anything but the Red Cross.
If you're in an area that frequently sees fires, please pack your emergency kit now. You need AT LEAST 72 hours worth of food, water, and medication for EACH member of your family, including your pets. I suggest up to a week if you can. If you have a vehicle, make sure your lights all work, make sure your emergency kit is in there, and your registration and insurance.
Your emergency kit should include and home/tenant insurance, pictures of things you want back/would want replaced (like xboxes, tvs, etc). Make sure it's up to date. You want health info for each member of your family, and copies of every single important document for them. This includes birth certificates, health care cards, health insurance cards, sin numbers, etc.
If you have pets, you want to have documentation of vaccinations, and please have your animals up to date on their vacinations and dewormers.
If you do not have a vehicle, then you need to contact somebody around you and talk about an emergency plan. Will they be able to get to you in time, what will you be able to take with you, etc.
If you live on a farm and have to evacuate, please ensure your animals have an escape route. Whether that's you or an open gate.
Most importantly, take care of eachother. Don't throw your cigarette butts out the window, don't flick your ashes, and don't have a fire if you're not allowed to in your area.
... but if you want to set our premier on fire.... I'm joking. Relax.

I think one of the hardest struggles of adhd for me is the lack of automaticity. Neurotypical people seem to be able to do things automatically. For them, get dressed consists of one step--get dressed.
But with adhd, it's hard to do things automatically because your brain is elsewhere, both consciously and subconsciously. "Getting dressed" isn't just one step, it's many. It's getting up, going to the closet, opening the closet, throwing the clothes on the bed, changing, put old clothes in the hamper, etc. etc.
And your brain can stop paying attention at any one of those steps. If you're not careful when you get up, you might go to the kitchen instead of the closet. If you're not paying attention, you might forget to put the old clothes in the hamper.
I think this is one of the reasons that compensating for unmedicated adhd is HIGHLY energy consuming. With anything you do, there are a million little micro steps where you can get derailed. I think this is why anxiety is often comorbid with adhd: it's one of the only conditions that forces you to always, always stress about what step you fucked up on.

Here's a reminder that ADHD is a disability. Sure, I poke fun at myself and I make the jokes about the "shinies" and whatnot, but it's still a disability. It still sucks. It still makes me want to rip my hair out. It still affect EVERY aspect of my life.
Over the past two weeks I've been struggling a lot. I have been having a really hard time getting out of bed to go to school or work. I sit here and I feel so dead, so empty.
I'm frustrated with my mind and how I perceive things, I'm frustrated with the fact that I can't focus, I'm frustrated with the fact that I physically cannot force myself to do something. I don't get to have habits. I don't get to not feel drained after leaving my house for an hour. I don't get to feel rewarded for a good grade, or for just doing something.
Trying to explain some of this stuff is a nightmare and sometimes I want to give up. Then I remember that there's kids actively going through this and beating themselves up for it, not knowing that there is something different about their brain. I keep posting things like this so that I can help people. So that someone might just kind of understand.

So. I had to write a short story in english and then translate it to latin.
It had to include an elephant and we got bonus points if that elephant was a hero, got a prize, or taught a duck how to better its life.
Of course i went with the whole childrens story idea. Lol

Hey all,
Just a reminder to parents and guardians that if your kid comes home with an invitation to a birthday party, please let the kids guardians know if you'll be able to attend or not.
My boyfriend's nephew just turned 6 and none of his classmates showed up to his party today.
And if your child doesn't want to go, that's fine! But let someone know that they can't make it.

As someone with an astigmatism, the bright lights are the worst. All lights do the "thing" but the brighter they are, the worse it is. It makes driving and even walking at night difficult.
perhaps some will disagree, but i think the world got worse when we changed the colour of the night

So. This is baby me. Lol
My great uncle came in from BC (drove from Victoria, through the fires, so that was fun). He brought a bunch of my great grandmas photo albums with him for my mom and I. We started going through all of the albums and wow, it's insane. My grandma had these photos of me, as well as some up until I was 13/14.
She also had some from when I sent her a few to put up at her care home where there was my mom and I in dresses, and my boyfriend and I. I remember sending her those and I broke last night when I saw them.
We also found a very old photo album with a bunch of pictures taken between the 20's and 70's. My great great uncle Buster (Harold) died in action in WW2.
I also found out that my family is weird and we collect obituaries and memorial cards and photos of headstones of family and friends. My mom and I joke that I'll turn her into a sparkly snowflake paperweight and then I'll take a selfie with it.
Her interment (putting her ashes away) is on Saturday. After that we have 1 more funeral thing to go to at the end of September for my boyfriends aunt.
This is long, so I have another thing I want to say about death and I will make a seperate post about that shortly.
I hope you're all doing alright. Take care of yourselves.
