hi!!! sorry that i’ve been kind of mia for the past few days. i was studying for my midterm that i had yesterday! it went really well! so now i’ll try and post more frequently! while i was cleaning my room i found some old books! process by kafka which i actually really enjoyed reading and a compilation of love letters sent throughout history which is so beautiful on the inside!! also enjoy a pic of the santa maria de la salute that i took on trip to italy :)

22.09.20 • a book that somehow SURPASSES the hype.

after seeing so many glowing reviews of this book, i was buzzing to finally start it myself and i was not disappointed! brit bennett's writing makes for a sublime reading experience; she's a true wordsmith - i was left itching to continue each time i had to put the book down. the book focuses on twin sisters, whose lives go down very separate paths after one begins to 'pass over' and live as a white woman. the book charts both of their lives and the lives of their daughters - my favourite character by far was jude, the daughter of desiree. in particular i loved her storyline with reese (i was pleasantly surprised to see trans rep in this book - i hadn't seen anyone mention it!) and the way she navigated her unevenly balanced relationship with her cousin kennedy, who she knows so much more than. to me the book was of course immediately reminiscent of nella larsen's seminal work 'passing', but bennett chooses to develop the book's central theme of colourism further by examining the effect this has on the complex familial relationships and dynamics between women in particular. an exceptional read. i'd never read bennett's work before and i'm excited to read 'the mothers' at some point soon!

The weekend. Same as any other day now really, with less work. With all the time in the flat I’m trying to do the things I’ve wanted to do but been putting off: I’m propagating tomatoes and herbs, sorting through these old copies of LRB and other magazines and papers, I’m going to complete that half-finished human rights law short course, tidy my kitchen cupboards and make pasta with the 00 flour that is still sat in a jar. All good time-filling things. But it’s also enough to just sit in the sun for an hour with a beer and a book, isn’t it

02.07.20 • over the moon!! my stepsister just moved and ended up having a spare desk that needs a home for a year, so i have very happily taken it on. i’ve been working from the kitchen table since i moved back home so this is a welcome change! i’m on my very last assignment for my tefl qualification and can’t wait to finally finish - hopefully by the end of the week i’ll be fully certified 🎓
