Brexit really not helping
Four in five (80%) believe healthy food is something everyone should be able to have, yet only 8% think it is affordable to most people. Almost half (49%) stated that financial pressures have made them cut back on the quality of food they eat. The research thus reflects a worsening food environment in the United Kingdom, where an estimated 11.3m people nationwide experience food insecurity. This is most acute in low-income areas, with an estimated 1.2 million people living in ‘food deserts’ where affordable, fresh food is severely limited.

idk who needs to hear this but when your english teacher asks you to explain why an author chose to use a specific metaphor or literary device, it’s not because you won’t be able to function in real-world society without the essential knowledge of gatsby’s green light or whatever, it’s because that process develops your abilities to parse a text for meaning and fill in gaps in information by yourself, and if you’re wondering what happens when you DON’T develop an adult level of reading comprehension, look no further than the dizzying array of examples right here on tumblr dot com

I was at a courthouse once, and saw an indigenous australian woman in a dressing gown very carefully and gingerly making her way down the steps outside the courthouse, surrounded by family who were helping her down the stairs. We asked if she was OK, because she looked awful. She looked like she should have been wrapped up in bed with blankets and hot soup, not on the steps of a courthouse.
One of her family told us that she had given birth yesterday evening, but that Child Protection services had taken her baby away with no warning, claiming that she wasnt prepared to look after him. What had happened, is that she'd literally only just given birth -- hadn't even passed the afterbirth yet, is holding her blood-coated, crying, newborn baby to her chest -- and a nurse asked what her feeding plan was. She was tired from the birth and distracted by the brand new baby in her arms and thrown off by the timing of the question, but still, she managed to answer, and said she planned to breastfeed him whenever he was hungry.
Well apparently that wasn't enough of a plan for the hospital staff, who reported her and claimed that she was unprepared to look after the child, and claimed that had no social supports, and that the baby was at risk if left with her. All because a brand new mother, 30 seconds after giving birth, didn't have a PowerPoint presentation ready to go that cited the timing cycle she would feed her kid on, and instead simply said that she would feed him when he was hungry.
Child Protection services showed up, took her kid, and she was told to show up to court the next day to contest custody if she wanted her baby back.
So a woman who had given birth less than 24 hours prior was forced to rally her family and show up to court to prove that she a) had a feeding plan for the child, and b) had enough social supports to justify reclaiming her baby.
It was one of the most appalling things I'd ever seen. I don't even know if she won her case. They didn't know at the time we saw them, and after that brief interaction on the stairs, i never saw them again. I sincerely hope she got her newborn baby back.
That was about 5 years ago. And the exact same kind of thing is still happening today.
News broke today from a South Australian whistle-blower of the appalling treatment new mothers frequently receive, including hospital staff taking the baby away from the mother "for medical tests," only for the mother to then be told, with absolutely no prior warning, that the baby was not going to be returned to her.
Here's the article, and here are some excerpts:

Not voting = one of the following almost every time:
people’s rights stricken
Piece of the environment will be destroyed
Something important won’t get funds
Vulnerable people more likely to be oppressed or die
Every time I advocate for voting people are like "no you shouldn't vote! Read this literature, it'll totally change the way you view voting!" And every single time it's the same fucking "you shouldn't vote because both parties are exactly the same so it won't make a difference who wins" bullshit wrapped up in some fancy language

I think the bigger issue is how men are portrayed in society as being 'sex crazed/thinking about it all the time/want it all the time'- so when that, very wrong, expectation is subverted many women take it personally and don't understand that it's normal for ALL people to have moments where they don't feel up for it, even when they might have an active sex drive much of the time.
What those women said was so awful- and it's a direct symptom of societal issues.
Men's sexual autonomy is so misunderstood and misused in our society. This leads to SO much abuse that goes unquestioned, and much of the time unquestioned by male victims.
I am glad we're all on the same page, but I think it's important to talk about the WHY behind these statements.
Reason #976 for why I hate Twitter:
Tumblr media
Women's responses:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Men please know that you have every right to not want to have sex. You're consent is just as important as a woman's. You don't need a "valid" excuse to why you don't want to have sex, its your body and you have the right to say no. If your girlfriend or wife tries to guilt trip you or threaten you because you don't want to have sex with them find someone better because you deserve someone who actually respects your.
Woman respect your boyfriends or husband's feelings. His consent matters just like yours. Men aren't sex craved animals and sometimes they just aren't in the mood. If you want him to respect you than you need to respect him and his wishes as well. It's a two way street.

hobby crafts and great and everyone should get into a hobby craft, but I really really really really need people to do at least a little bit of research into what they’re interested in and learn important things such as that fact that polymer clay, air-dry clay, and resin are NOT food safe. yes that includes clay that’s been coated in a clear coat like mod podge (the dishwasher safe mod podge is not food safe)
the reason that some* ceramics are food safe is because glazes melt into essentially a thin layer of glass on the surface, and the clay is heated to a temperature that vitrifies it. and I say some because not all ceramics/glazes/firing temps are food safe, and that’s a whole other deep dive of research for people who get into ceramics. but the point is that most people can’t do that at home, so they look into non-ceramic materials and assume that’s a cheaper and easier way to make food-safe items, when really what’s going to happen is all these materials will leach into your food, especially with heat applied
also can resin creators wear proper PPE with gloves and respirator, I am begging you, that shit is toxic to touch and inhale

They are slowly starving/defunding humanities departments left and right in colleges because of this whole 'stem is god' push we've seen in academics/society. The same thing is happening in primary and secondary schools, where we are see a general curriculum narrowing of humanities, and a widening of stem.
People will learn maths and sciences, but not how to creatively apply them, write about them convincingly, how to apply ethic stances to their decisions, how to contextualize them etc.
It's an issue- and it doesn't help that reading is something few kids do, writing is something most kids struggle with (reading high school writing is painful so much of the time- they're lacking in basics, and now have AI to do it for them- so it's really bad, even from some of my brightest speakers.) The arts are always the first thing on the chopping block when there are budget issues- and it's even more prevalent when there's this prevailing thought that 'literally nothing matters but Stem' that's starving even English and Humanities departments.
Philosophy, history, civics, reading, writing, analysis, ethics, art, music etc. It's all in peril.
And thanks to people having a terrible understanding of politics, they won't vote to help fund public schools well enough to save them.
I'm hopeful this will change, especially as an Arts and Humanities teacher, but I'm quite nervous about these trends.
