The Simpsons: Season 31 Episode 21
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In ‘The Simpsons’ Season 31 Episode 21, ‘The Hateful Eight-Year-Olds’, Lisa’s old penpal Abby has fallen in with a bunch of rich, spoiled girls who look down on the likes of Lisa herself. During Lisa’s visit to Abby, it’s set up that horse riding at her place is secured by special jackets that inflate thanks to an attached cord at the back.
In the climax of the episode, as the girls ride on individual horses, Abby turns on her ‘friends’, reasserting her friendship and nerdiness with Lisa, swiftly riding behind the others and pulling their respective cords.
The inflated jackets leave them looking spherical like a ball, even surprisingly consuming the leg wear in a way that makes the legs stick out like in a torso-wrapping article of clothing. They swell up enough to the point you can see the strain of the jacket’s puffiness against the arms, legs and cord itself. (Pics 1-2)
This suddenness of it causes them to tumble off their horses, as first demonstrated with the British girl Sloan; she rocks on the saddle before falling off, which helps show how the jacket covers the legs as she lands. (Pics 3-6) There’s an artistic error when Sloan falls; the two stripes across either side of the jacket are separated in the middle on the front and back, but at the top of the saddle they’re connected on the back. (Pic 4)
The other girls, Tessa and Bella-Ella, also inflate fall in sequence (Pics 6-12), leaving them on the ground, unable to get up. They’re all still on the ground as the scene ends, trying to throw insults before giving up, though there’s a continuity error with how they’re matched up, switching the latter two girls around. Goldie Gold and Action Jack: Episode 13 Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks to Goldie’s Balloon Buckle, the heroes are able to travel along to an airfield. (Pic 1) The villains have already made their way into the air in one plane and to their surprise shock the large sphere of a young lady with her companions hanging on. (Pic 2)
Since they’re now within range for transport, Goldie takes the initiative (Pic 3) and reaches down to the Balloon Buckle, deactivating it. (Pic 4) The rounded top of it gradually deflates as air rushes out. (Pics 5-6) In the far shot we get, it’s significantly slimmed down, with the lower half looking egg-shaped as air hisses out from both sides. (Pic 7) As the trio descend, we’re shown that Goldie’s thighs and backside appear curvy, presenting ball-like hips above and her legs covered in a tube-shape while she has a stocky upper half. (Pic 8)
Unfortunately, the landing isn’t quite as easy as the descent (Pic 9), leading Jack and Sam to fall to the ground while Goldie, her clothes back to normal and properly aligned, winds up sitting on top of them. (Pic 10)

Goldie Gold and Action Jack: Episode 13 Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
‘Goldie Gold and Action Jack’ was an animated series from 1981 by Ruby-Spears, a company that specialised in animation shows. The cartoon’s premise has its title characters, the rich teenage heiress of a newspaper company and her reporter boyfriend, go on many adventures across thirteen episodes, and this episode, ‘The Goddess of the Black Pearl’, is the final one.
Goldie, Jack and his boss Sam wind up hanging for their lives off a ledge while the episode’s villains go off to escape and be content with apparent victory after securing the titular black pearls. Luckily, Goldie utilises a previously-unmentioned experimental device on her person to try and save themselves, the Balloon Buckle.
Upon activating it, the inflation starts out by swelling the midsection where the belt’s situated on her form-fitting yellow jumpsuit (Pics 1-2), and rising out wider and larger against Goldie’s figure, bulging enough to fill out and push back her coat. (Pics 3-4) Once the ballooning middle grows past her coat, we can see it bulging against the tightness of the slim belt, looking practically burger-shaped. (Pic 5)
In the shot following this, we see Goldie from behind with the midsection overlapping the backside and the coat obscured until outright vanishing altogether. (Pic 6) While above the belt the outfit has a bit of a squashed circular look, the belt presents a huge bottom-heavy look for Goldie as the inflation continues, absorbing the legs into it, leaving only her feet sticking out. (Pic 7) Now fully inflated with air, Goldie’s ballooned person rises up, up, up into the air, with her friends hanging onto her in a chain, with a good clear full view of the fully rotund Goldie in action in Pic 11. (Pics 8-11) It goes to show how much the Balloon Buckle can really stretch out!
As the trio ride high through the air, we get a trailing view of them from Sam to Goldie as they talk, the belt digging into her outfit with strain marks around the clothing to present pressure. (Pic 12) Rather than present another problem - how to get down - it offers a convenient means of transport as the balloon sails through the air at a great speed, which could be aided by any wind in the area, in a lovely shot detailing the landscape as they pass through. Favourite Clothing/Suit Inflation Scenes?
For all those who enjoy good puffy inflated clothes: Since there’s a great deal of those scenes in media (and personally I feel is somewhat underrated in the expansion community), do any of you have any favourite clothing/suit inflation scenes? Whether it’s the most famous or obscure, there’s always some scene that we appreciate. Feel free to list them, always good to know 😊
Some of mine include:
Neon Genesis Evangelion episode 10’s plugsuit
Spy Kids 2’s inflat-a-suits
Ben 10’s hazmat suit scenes
Totally Spies
Goldie Gold and Action Jack episode 13’s balloon buckle scene
Josie and the Pussycats’ nurse Josie blimp scene

Have you heard of the wonderful galaxy of oz. There’s scenes where Dorothy inflates her balloon suit
Oh yeah I’m well aware of it, I even provided screencaps for its scenes on my Puffy Clothes wiki. It’s surprising and cute how many scenes there are, definitely a sweet little inflation gem 😊

Ben 10: Season 3 Episode 12
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in Season 3, in the episode ‘Be Afraid of the Dark’, Gwen and Grandpa Max, once again donning hazmat suits, go up against the Mummy in all his evil wrapping. Trapping in the clutch of the monster, Gwen decides to turn an old mistake into a new strength - initiating the same spell that blew her up like a balloon! Max reminds her that spells don’t work properly in her suit, but as she says, “Yes they do! Just not like how they’re supposed to...” and so she launches her bouncy assault.
Outstretching her arms to face the Mummy, the arms wind up being the first to fill up. Interestingly, it’s actually done in segmented stages, with the hands being effected, turning spherical with the fingers poking out, followed by the shoulders bulging out like massive growths, with the arms blowing up in the middle soon after, creating three spheres on either arms. As they inflate, the suit is heard creaking as the spell’s gust of wind travels across its interior. The arms continue to expands, outstretching as its segments reach equal size and roundness, spilling past the frame as Gwen looks on, not totally sure if this will work and worrying how she’ll take it this time. (Pic 1)
After a brief shot of the Mummy looking front and centre, we get a ‘WHACK’ sound as an inflated Gwen makes contact offscreen. In no time at all, we see a fully-expanded Gwen racing into a room with the Mummy forced against her front. This time, she’s even larger than the first inflation scene, looking approximately twice the first size, even if it’s a very fast sequence, making the action she unintentionally dishes out more believable, exciting and fun. Bursting into the room, Gwen hits the floor, crushing him before she bounces off and towards a wall, giving the Mummy a slight break in freedom before the taut-suited Tennyson bounces off the wall and into it again. During this, she’s spinning around in her balloon-figured state, the bouncing providing more motion, making it look like she’s a massive sports ball. Just as well, every point of contact - the floor, wall and Mummy - we hear her yell out, indicating she feels disorientation, dizziness or even the physical discomfort of her suit harshly hitting everything. (Pic 2)
When Max reaches the room himself, he sees that Gwen’s been bashing the Mummy by aggressively bouncing back and forth between it and ceiling, never giving the entity the chance to do anything. However, this doesn’t last long, as she winds up breaking off from the routine as hits all the other walls of the room, before the strained suit leads her in the direction of Max, coupled with an exceptional yell as she heads towards the screen as though the strike the viewer, her expression of total panic as she’s about to collide, face filling the screen all the way up to a closeup of her nose. This moment also provides us with a clear view of Gwen’s new size; the front and back are far longer and broader, and the submerged hands at greater breadth to show just how outstretched they are. Given the swelling of the hands and general size, we can take it as the hands being naturally just her own, or take it a step further and say it’s actually the suit’s hands while Gwen’s still huddled up inside trying to hang on somehow, which is also another interpretation of her yells other than just going all over the place so fast. (Pic 3)
Either way, Gwen goes straight into Max, sending the pair into what eventually turns out to be an airlock, with the door shutting itself and allowing them a reprieve from the creature. This part provides a scale of Gwen’s size with her Grandpa, she’s clearly several times wider than him. In addition, the sleeves of the suit arms can be plainly seen despite the previous and very next shots; I’m not if this is an error or not. (Pic 4)
Now safe and secured away from the Mummy, not to mention having finally stopped moving around like a giant rubber ball, Gwen’s face is a lot more relaxed in a close shot of her and Max. From there, she immediately deflates, starting with the arms regaining their individuality as blimps, becoming baggier with folds as the main body of the suit shrinks and tightens down, including the prominent round back descending. She’s now calm and collected that she was able to get them out of the Mummy’s way, at least for now, all on her own. (Pic 5)

Ben 10: Season 3 Episode 8
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
‘Ben 10′ is a sci-fi cartoon that aired on Cartoon Network, about ten-year-old Ben Tennyson who finds the Omnitrix, a watch-like device that bonds with him and allows him to transform into (initially) ten different alien forms, using them to save the world. He’s accompanied by his Grandpa Max and cousin Gwen.
In the episode Under Wraps, an alien Mummy searches for a sustance referred to as Corrodium, which can mutate people into purple creatures. While Ben faces off against the Mummy, Gwen tries to cast a spell against a mutant to defend herself and Max. Unfortunately, the spell doesn’t go as planned, due to the fact she’s wearing a hazmat suit given the circumstances.
The result? Well, the spell, Mulcha Objecta, only succeeds in inflating Gwen’s hazmat suit like a balloon, apparently filling it with air. Since the spell’s motions mean that it’s expelled from her hands, this means that the arms swell up, going from the forearms to the whole of the limbs, becoming rounder while it move along. The shoulders are then affected, with the upper torso widening, developing into a top-heavy look where the shoulders and back bulge against the head, and the limbs becoming totally round. The spell travels down the legs, thighs becoming enormous, and Gwen is lifted off the floor as the torso and and arms swell into one smooth surface, the legs similarly being absorbed until the suit’s turned into a large round ball. Only the hands, feet and head are left poking out to indicate any sense of humanity while Gwen is overwhelmed, shocked by this. All of this occurs over the course of a second. (Pic 1)
Before she can do anything, poor Gwen is instantly sound flying off, the back of her hitting the ceiling and bouncing off, the contact causing the air inside to squash and bulge the suit’s shape. (Pic 2) She’s racing to the floor, striking machinery on the front of her suit and sent bouncing back upwards as she screams. (Pic 3) Hitting the ceiling once again, there’s no difference in shape this time, and as she goes back down her face fills the screen, letting the viewer see how distressed she is as she yells. (Pic 4) All the while as she goes back and forth, the suit goes faster and faster, with dense noises at it creaks from the strain of its swelling and harsh contact.
Max is just able to dodge a strike from the mutant, who fortunately is in the right position for Gwen to unintentionally slam into with the built momentum, sending him back. (Pic 5) The strike also causes Gwen to slow down and bounce just a little against the floor, staying afloat before the spell ends, instantly snapping her suit back to normal size with an elastic sound effect, deflating with the limbs in plumped segments, at lands on the floor. (Pic 6)
Not liking the experience one bit, Gwen makes a note never to use a spell when inside a hazmat suit. She’ll keep it in mind, but history will repeat itself just four episodes later.

SUGGESTIONS
If anyone has any suggestions regarding any clothing or suit inflation scenes that would be good to analyse and cover, feel free to shoot any my way.
It can be from any medium out there, so long as there’s a reference for it, including any links and time-codes for the scenes (for example, a time for a scene across a long movie I’m linked to).

Spy Kids 2: Animatics
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the final part of my look at the Spy Kids 2 Inflat-A-Suits, we have the animatic used for our main spy duo as the creature rises from the ocean. They follow the puffy arms design from the concept art, depicted as two balls. The spies’ previsualised renderings are cute, and interestingly have Juni look at himself while Carmen’s more focused on their environment. (Pic 1) In the overhead shot, the legs are also represented in a similar fashion. (Pics 2-4)
In the BTS feature’s section exploring the work put into this, the reference for the sea monster towering over the spies is accompanied by its more detailed rendering with outlines reserved for the duo, and finally the shot fully realised. (Pics 4-6)
The only other thing I can cover about this would be the Spy Kids 2 novelisation, but I’ve got nothing on that XD
So it’s taken some time to get through, but that’s the Inflat-A-Suit scenes all covered and looked through! It’s a fun nostalgic one for me, and a scene that’s become considerably iconic as far as suit inflation scenes go. It feels good to start things off on a strong note!

Spy Kids 2: Props
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miniature props versions of the inflated spies were used for when they rise up from the waters fully blown up. (Pics 1-2) The props have heads accurately capturing their faces, even the breathing masks used that the characters would then remove in the footage with the actors. (Pic 3-4) The model versions would be used for when Carmen and Juni speed through the water as they deflate, and when Gary and Gerti bounce onto the coast, which we see with a crew member throwing them about. Spy Kids 2: Shooting Scenes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As explained in a behind the scenes video on the movie’s DVD, the Inflat-A-Suit scenes were shot in a lake by writer and directer Robert Rodriguez’s home in Austen. (Pic 1) The completed Inflat-A-Suits themselves were made of fiber glass shells and were tied to the dock where shooting took place, so they and the actors were totally safe and secured. (Pic 3-6) Since the scenes were meant to take place in the middle of an ocean, the surrounding strips of land were digitally erased in the final product, as I’ve compared in Pic 2.
Another feature showcases the Inflat-A-Suits’ behind the scenes footage, including splitting the screen to show the work put into filming and finished shots (Pics 6-8), as well as the footage as it’s recorded on camera. (Pic 7) including the only BTS shot with the Giggles’ actors, specifically when they react to the sea monster. (Pic 8) It ends on a different take of Carmen’s “Oh great, I’m fat!” line. (Pic 9)

Spy Kids 2: Inflated Suit
Tumblr media
Filming for the coastline scenes was done in Costa Rica with the kid spy actors for when they land on the beach. For a brief moment of behind the scenes footage in a feature, we get to see Carmen’s actress Alexa PenaVega in the inflatable suit fully puffed up, with Juni’s actor Carter Hastings next to her in his own baggy one. It’s surprising to see, as we never get to chance to gaze at anything like that in the film itself, and the suit has a very nice thick heavy look to it.
Apologies for the quality of some shots, it’s a combination of speed as well as the quality of the footage itself, so I can’t grab a clear view of the suit’s bottom half to edit together.

Spy Kids 2: Concept Art
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Concept art of the Inflat-A-Suits reveals they could have had a much darker colour scheme compared to the brighter beachball-like selection we’d get in the film proper, a dark grey/black look. The limbs aren’t as restrained in the spherical physiques, in fact they’re supported by the suits with puffy fat-looking sleeves. (Pic 1)
I like how the art also captures Carmen and Juni’s general attitudes from being inflated, it’s cute. (Pic 2)

Spy Kids 2: Part 6
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rather than the speedy release of air zipping them along to the shore like Carmen and Juni, Gary and Gerti instead bounce onto the island’s sands to add to the contrast. Their journey to the island is one that’s far more humiliating and comedic compared to the heroes’, even with the tone of the Inflat-A-Suit scenes in mind, and this caps it off well. Carmen and Juni’s deflating arrival was funny but somewhat graceful and respectful, whereas the harsh bouncing after being faced by a sea monster gives the Giggles duo a more embarrassing case befitting their nature as the film’s rivals. (Pics 1-5)
Gerti’s the first to make contact, swiftly followed by Gary. An amusing observation, which is easy to miss when the movement is blurry from being so fast, is that Gerti’s suit doesn’t have any room for the feet to poke out, but Gary’s most definitely does. (Pics 1 and 3) We don’t get to see or hear their reactions as they bounce, but we do see that the suits aren’t so full that they’re totally tight, as Gerti’s squishes a bit against the ground. (Pic 2)
Once they finally land, we see them deflate, and Gary’s the one who takes up the real prominence there. The belt’s position leads to the upper body’s chest area bulging out at the front, especially since he’s on his back, adding that extra emphasis. The lower half is enormous, the stomach and legs stick out much further than the upper half in one round shape, with the individual existence of the legs subtle but there at the bottom, aided by Gary’s feet which lay more towards the ground. (Pic 6) By having the pair on their backs, it gives the inflated bodies more of a push forward. As he deflates, Gary’s upper half looks twice the size of his bottom half, looking like a large fat tube of toothpaste getting thoroughly squeezed. (Pic 7) He’s left with his suit totally baggy, all the air left him. His huge deflation’s rapid, occurring only in the space of three seconds. (Pic 8)
Gerti’s deflation is a lot more minor given her big brother covering her up, the head barely visible past his puffed up physique at Pic 6, and become visible when he deflates. Her leg’s up at Pic 7, looking mostly deflated but still has a good deal of air in the suit, as Pic 8 shows the belt causes her thighs to bulge against them with a slight curve to the torso. (Pic 8)
Gary’s attempt to take out the creature in revenge naturally doesn’t happen, though Gerti points him over to Carmen and Juni’s own deflated and discarded suits, letting them know our heroes arrived earlier. (Pic 9)
