Can I get a little more info on his cage setup? Honestly from your description it sounds like it’s breeding season behavior, males can fast seasonally w/o detriment during spring / early summer. Fairly normal for an adult male, but a few cage tweaks might help stimulate appetite : )
cw : snake feeding discussion, f/th feeder
Anyone know how to get a hognose to eat? :/
I'm getting really frustrated, Hagrid (male western hognose, several years old) has been eating like a champ since he came here last year. But recently I can't get him to even consider eating what I offer him, even though he ACTS very hungry.
I think maybe I'm doing something wrong. He rejected the last time I thawed a hopper for him, and it got too hot and rotted horribly by the next morning. When I tried another one I think he was too put off by me bothering him the first time to even try. Now 10+ days later I'm trying again since he's been glass surfing and acting hungry, but again he won't eat...
This time I made sure to put the frozen feeder in a bag, then in a cup, and thaw it in the fridge for 24 hours. Then I put warm water in the cup, let it warm, then rinsed it in hot water to wash the blood and warm the nose, dried it and rubbed it on smelly mouse bedding, and tried putting it in with him. He sniffed the bedding like crazy but otherwise acted like it didn't even exist. I tried using tongs to move it a bit but he hissed at me instead... :c
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, he acts like there's nothing there and WILL NOT EAT. Does it need to be warmer, maybe...? I only had it in warm water for 10 minutes or so, it was fully thawed when I took it out but maybe it's not warm enough? Is it too cool so he doesn't notice it's edible? I feel like this is really common knowledge but I just can't get it right...how do you get it warm enough without spoiling it? I feel AWFUL that I'm being so wasteful, it's really stressing me out that I'll probably have to toss this one too, but I don't want to risk him getting sick if I were to warm it up again. :'c Any advice from folks with snake experience would be helpful. He's otherwise perfect with eating f/th, I just can't seem to thaw them in a way he "recognizes" consistently.

Talked to my dad and he’s gonna help me start building the first cage in 2 weeks! I’ve got to help him at the beach (not sure if I mentioned this on this blog but we’re renovating a single wide down there) next week as payment but I’m excited to get started! Plus I needed to borrow his van because I am NOT strapping plywood to the top of my Corolla lmao.
Gonna make the final list for the first cage stack today so I know for sure how much it’s gonna take material wise. The first builds are going to be 3 6’x2’x30” stacking cages for the janis. Definitely overkill for the two juvies but they will grow haha. I’m doing these cages first because they’re going to take the most customization since they need so much air flow.

I really love this water moccasin/ cottonmouth enclosure. The water against the rocks was so pretty.
(Cage size roughly 5’ cube?)

Ugh, power is out across my area. It’s not a big deal today since it’s so cool out compared to how it has been recently but I need to look into investing in a generator. It’s 77 in the house and the incubator is holding at 81 so we’re all good so far. Power should be back on around 1 (hopefully!)

2 eastern rat snake enclosures! Both probably 5-6’ x 4x 5’? One cage was labeled for a northern pine snake but from what I could see they were both black rats. I especially love the one with the huge hollow log!

It’s back on! I decided I wanted to try one of my Sumatran short tails (used a pic of Thyme for my main reference), here’s all I got done in what, an hour and a half ish?

Worked out a basic pose with foil

Covered the foil with a base layer (shrink wrapped sstp lol)

And when the power came back on I was working on adding the spine and basic muscles working from the back to the front. Fat, folds in the the skin, and scales will be added once I get the shapes and the head roughed out. My “firm” sculpey was pretty much a solid brick of dust rip so I was just using the “original” and “soft” super sculpey.
He’s very rough around the edges but it was fun to spend some time just zoned out haha
Gotta get back to actual work now tho 😓

Since I can’t do any actual work until the power comes back on I think I’m gonna go outside with the dogs and try some sculpting. I haven’t sculpted anything seriously since I was in rehab lmao but I’ve been wanting to pick it up again recently and got some super sculpy the last time I went to the art store. Not sure what I should try? I’ll probably just get the clay out and see what I feel like lol

Wowww! Amazing job!

Rainbow snake.
This art took like forever. Every single scale had to be drawn individually. No copy and paste for this little boy. He was hard to make, but I love him.

Oh forgot to say in the original reply but even though the zoo does have covid rules in place there were a ton of people not complying and not social distancing enough to make me feel very uncomfortable. I don’t think the zoo is at fault especially since it’s so huge and they can’t have employees monitoring everyone at all times but it’s something to keep in mind before planning a trip especially if you’re not vaccinated!
