New Arguments I’ve Heard Against Black Annabeth After Annabeth’s Casting and Why They Are Dumb

“Leah and Aryan shouldn’t have been cast because they are going to face racism now.”

Full disclosure, I am not black, but I am marginalized in other ways, and let me just say… this directly feeds into discrimination. It is not uncommon that people in marginalized communities to have been discriminated against under the guise of “protecting” them. This is because people are shitty to marginalized people, and the marginalized people get punished for it. Because instead of holding shitty people accountable, they give them their way, and punish marginalized people in the process.

I get that Leah and Aryan will face racism, regardless of whether or not they were cast in this show, but that is not the fault of the casting, nor does that mean they shouldn’t have been casted. That is not fair to either of them, and is really counterproductive.

I really don’t think you want to see your take be taken in that context.

“Annabeth is black and Percy is blonde, my hopes and dreams for this show are gone.”

I wish I were exaggerating but this is almost word for word an argument I saw.

All I have to say is if this is what crushed your hopes and dreams for this show… you had extremely shallow hopes. It is not the end of the world that the actors that were casted don’t look exactly like the characters, nor does it mean the adaptation is going to be bad. If that’s what you think, then I got news for you…

Not to mention the people saying this had no issue with Percy being blonde until they saw the actress they cast for Annabeth was black.

“Rick only cast a black Annabeth to be ‘woke’.”

Now, I am not one to praise Rick for his “diversity” in his books, because of the misrepresentation in his books, but the fact that you have a hard time believing that a black girl was simply the better actress, and that she must’ve been cast because of Rick’s personal agenda says a lot more about you than it does about Rick or anyone else.

This is literally what people bitch about when black women get cast in anything, and yet you all love to claim you aren’t racist. Well… guess what? A non-racist doesn’t have to assume that a black person only got hired to fill a quota.

Also, the same people who are bitching about Annabeth no longer being underestimated for being blonde (for the sake of “representation”) are the same people who are literally underestimating Leah because she’s black? Do you not see the irony?

“Rick casting Annabeth as a black girl is hypocritical, because Annabeth was brunette in the movie, and he didn’t like the movie.”

I don’t even understand this argument, because not only is it not hypocritical, but Rick has never once said that Annabeth being brunette was an issue with the movies. You are projecting your own shallow criticisms of the movie on to Rick, and assuming he shares your opinions, and I feel like this is an issue that had built up in the fandom for years.

Rick himself has stated long before he cast Leah, that he doesn’t care about appearances nearly as much as casting the right age- which he did.

But after so many people acting like Annabeth being brunette was the worst thing those movies did as an adaptation. News Flash: It wasn’t. People overreacted. Which, I get, because a lot of the fans bitching about it now were 9-13 when the movies came out. It wasn’t a big deal, but as children, it may have felt like a big deal.

But now, we are adults. It’s time to get over ourselves.

first of all, annabeth’s character does not depend on her race and it definitely does not depend on her breaking the dumb blonde trope. if anything, making her black deepens her character because black girls have to fight so much harder than a lot of other people to be seen as intelligent

secondly, THERE ARE SO MANY CHARACTERS WHO BREAK THE DUMB BLONDE STEREOTYPE SO STOP ACTING LIKE SHE IS THE ONLY ONE. this is a list of some characters who i could think of in abt ten minutes if your that starved for representation:

all of these are great characters who are really smart and also blonde, ok :)

lastly, (this one makes me the most angry) casting a poc as a white character is so completely different from casting a white character as a poc. white people are represented in pretty much every single piece of mainstream media. most of their characters are fully developed and it’s really really easy for white people to see their race represented in the media. THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR. i am south asian (i live in the us tho). i see so little representation of my race in the media that it makes me angry. and a large amount of the little representation i do get is harmful. many desi characters are based heavily on stereotypes and their race is only there to be made fun of. so if there was a character who was desi in a book and in an adaptation, they made that character white, that would be so much more harmful than doing the opposite because you would be taking away one more piece of representation from people who already have so little and giving it to the people who have more than anyone else.

Ok so blonde annabeth was my childhood icon because she broke the dumb blonde stereotype for me as a middle schooler and I’m upset about her casting. There. I said it.

Fight me. Come in my tl. I’ll fight back. That character has been so important to me and I’m sorry but she’s not the same character if she’s a different race. Race matters to people, it affects a person’s lives experiences in a very particular way, and annabeth being blonde, in some small way, made her who she is.

Black annabeth will be great, I’m positive. She’ll do wonders for young girls and be a great addition to the show. But she’s not the annabeth I grew up with.

If you’d be mad about casting Piper as white instead of native or Frank as black instead of Asian, then you should be mad here. Annabeth’s race matters just as much as anyone else’s.
