nobuddy feels like they have a sharp attention span these days, right? and we all just click “agree on terms of service” because its hard to love yourself sometimes, well
enter Terms of Service, Didn’t Read: a website and a browser addon that streamlines the terms of service of many popular web services to be read by the tech sunday drivers.
Tumblr media
It’s graded from A (great) to E (awful) and if you have the addon you have access to the info about the website on your bar

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning
If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
Tumblr media
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
Tumblr media
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
Update: There's now a Megathread about this on the AO3 subreddit.

another thing about my boy Lan Wangji is that he has no chill. zero chill. negative chill. he is the black hole where chill goes to die.
when Wei Ying asks what he thinks of him, drunk Lan Zhan says “Mine.” but “Mine” means “i will protect you from harm by any means necessary. i will catch you when you faint or fall, even if i know you’re faking it. i will defend you from vicious beasts and cute puppies alike. i will buy you anything your heart desires. i will cradle your head in my lap so your neck doesn’t hurt when you wake up. i will trust you. i will do whatever it takes to keep you happy, including drinking with you. i will die of jealousy every time someone else touches you but i will not show it.”
Wei Wuxian keeps describing him as icy or cold or indifferent but that’s such bull. my boy has built a snow colored fortress to hide the inferno inside because if a single lick of his fire comes out, it will swallow the world whole.
a complete absence of chill.

but also, the whole story becomes a lot more painful once you realize that during the whole post-resurrection timeline, Lan Wangji believes that Wei Wuxian knows how madly in love with him he is and that he’s just fucking with him because of that. and being fucked with is one of his erogenous zones apparently, so he’s simultaneously painfully turned on and seriously hurt the whole entire time. no wonder he turns into a lunatic child when he drinks.

If I can add re: Syndrome being a good villain bc it’s so true and I love to dissect.
He sets the stage for his own villainy without even knowing it! Syndrome, as Buddy, is the very reason that supers had to go into hiding.
Buddy crashes into Bob’s fight with Bomb Voyage, who then attaches a bomb to the bottom of his cape. Bob tries to stop him from leaving so he can get rid of it, but he’s not fast enough and manages to just barely grab him as he takes off. (Side note: the engineering on the boots is really incredible for a prototype to be able to support both Buddy and Bob without crashing and actually gain height.) By the time Bob manages to get rid of the bomb, he basically just has to knock it off before it kills them both. It falls, lands on the train tracks, and blows a hole in them. Bob then has to stop an approaching train from crashing into that hole, which leads to a bunch of injured parties suing him, plus the suicidal man he was saving when he ran into Bomb Voyage in the first place, instead of everyone being dead. This leads to more lawsuits against more supers and eventually drives them all into hiding.
None of that would have happened if Buddy hadn’t been there. Bob would’ve maybe gotten sued by the suicidal guy, but it absolutely would’ve been dismissed in the face of him having saved a life and also thwarted a bank robbery/bombing.
Buddy, years later now as Syndrome, uses this forced exile to lure a lot of supers into his trap, including his ultimate target, Bob.
And to get a little meta too:
Someone on Twitter brought up the other day how Buddy/Syndrome is a really good example of the dangers of parasocial relationships. Buddy doesn’t consider for a second that he nearly killed a lot of people, including himself and Bob. He only focuses on “go home, Buddy, I work alone.”
Which for all intents and purposes is an incredibly justified line! Even if it’s not necessarily true, Bob is under no obligation to tell Buddy the truth, and quite honestly, when a child is repeatedly putting themself in that much danger, he’s obligated to say whatever he needs to to get them to stop!
But Buddy’s obsession is so powerful that it doesn’t make a dent. If anything, the discouragement only makes his obsession and desire to prove himself stronger. And this is where the comparison to modern parasocial relationships is spot on. In the kpop community, we refer to these types of fans as sasaengs. And while some do limit themselves to just being everywhere and calling all the time, other do actively attempt to hurt idols. Sasaeng fans have caused major car accidents, have sent idols letters written in blood, and have even tried poisoning idols. This is absolutely the same wavelength of obsession that Buddy is on. “If I can’t have you, no one will” and “when everyone is super, no one will be” are absolutely within the same line of thinking.
Buddy is a good villain not because he’s evil for the sake of being evil, but because he has a motivation and a goal that is absolutely found in real life. We all know or have heard of someone whose fanaticism has gone too far.
finally decided to sit down and watch the incredibles again. there will be no commentary because i’m gonna be too busy watching it

hey sorry we put your boyfriend on a show where the game changes every time. yeah he has no idea what game he’s about to play. but he’ll be fine once he realizes the only way to win is by learning, the only way to learn is by playing, and the only way to begin is by beginning. yeah actually we’ll be beginning without further ado but you can pick him up after. sorry again.

i love how cats use their little walnut brains to go, "hm. it appears mother is moving very quickly and carrying many things. i bet it would be very helpful if i got right in front of her feet. this will make everything work more smoothly and won't lead to mother almost launching herself down the stairs to avoid kicking me. i am so good at plans."

saw a tiktok of a mother taking her very tiny daughter to an art museum and she’s just walking around going “whoooa” “woooaah” to everything but then they got to a marble statue of a nude woman lying on her back and the girl points and goes “mommy🫵” and i just immediately welled up with tears and all the comments are just laughing about it and of course it’s funny but how are you not insanely moved by the way art connects everyone on earth from a centuries-old sculptor to a toddler in 2023

the way you decolonise missionary work is by not doing missionary work
