⛤How To Celebrate Samhain⛤
Samhain, Celtic New Year, is the passage, threshold, conclusion and beginning.
It is the darkness from which everything begins, the silence from which the first vibration will arise, that initial void that must be in order for birth to take place.
Precious and necessary time. Time of rest and silent listening.
Threshold of this passage, of the limit between life, death and life, Samhain is an open door between the dimensions of time and existence.
The guardian of this threshold is Hecate, an ancient goddess who holds the keys of this Celebration.
Fairies and spirits are especially active on this night.
It is equally one of the many times to honor and host dead ancestors.
Prayers and food are left on the door steps and altar doors are left open and additional chairs are set outside.
Hearths are clean and home hearths are rekindled by a sacred common bonfire that is lit by rubbing.
The patron God and Goddess of this festival are the Dagda and the Morrigan.
On this day, spirits and fairy creatures invite mortals to spend a year together on the Hill of Delights with them; the druids act in the opposite direction, writing messages for the dead and entrusting them to the fire.
With the food and drinks of the afterlife, wine, beer and mead, they feast for the duration of the festival, which takes place from a minimum of 3 days to a maximum of 6 weeks, including meetings, battles, prophecies, spells and ritual sacrifices, in honor of the god of fertility Dagda and his wife Morrighan.
In the Celtic tale "The Wasting Sickness of Cuchulainn", the feast of Samhain is celebrated for a total of 7 days, of which 3 before and 3 after the party night.
To worthily celebrate the full circle of existence we must recognize the reality of death and physical decline as natural events, not as something to be ignored or hidden.
To these energies we must now pay homage but at the same time we must remember the new life that will come.
The Holly King teaches us that death is an end but also a beginning.
Let us keep in mind the lesson of the ancient Celts and do not indulge in sadness!
⛤Little things to do for Samhain:
Collect acorns, giving an acorn to friends and family as a wish for good luck.
Toast the local orchard with ale and cider in thanks for a copious harvest. Part of the harvest was left on the trees to ask for a good harvest in the coming years.
Apples were also buried to provide food for the spirits waiting to be reborn.
Before pumpkins were introduced, turnips were carved outside and lit with small candles. They could then be placed on the windows or carried in procession around the neighborhood to ward off diabolical intentions.
Scary stories were told throughout the night until the crowing of the cock drove all the fairies and spirits back into their world.
Stones marked with the owners' names were thrown into the fire and recovered the next morning. The state of the stone indicated the person's luck for the coming year.
But you can also:
Invite your friends to dinner, dress up as witches and ghosts, decorate your homes with Halloween pumpkins and celebrate traditional games by trying to grab the sacred apples hanging from a string or floating in a basin with our mouths of water!
You can have fun carving and digging pumpkins and turnips, inserting candles in them to expose them to the windows or balconies of your homes.
Finally, it is a moment in which in order to favor our regeneration, we can ritually abandon all the things of the past that we must or want to leave, abandon (let die) the things that we do not like in our life.
We can then write these things on slips of paper to burn them in our Samhain fire, which can also be a black or otherwise dark colored candle.
You can say a phrase three times like: "The so-and-so thing has come into being, the so-and-so thing has its season, and the so-and-so is going away!" Then, the slip of paper is burned in the flame.
We can then, more simply, give away or burn those objects that we no longer like.
It's time to give up bad habits, to change your life! In fact, before the new growth can begin, the soil must be fertilized with the remains of the previous year's crops and with the waste (if there were no death and decomposition there would be no Life).
An undoubtedly more complex ritual, but one that is worth performing, can be performed in our homes.
At sunset, the eve of Samhain, all the lights in the house go out and you stand in front of a black or dark candle. We hear the old year that is about to die, we remember all the good or bad things that you have experienced, we remember the people dear to you who are no longer there, and when we feel ready we light the candle saying: "I welcome them with this light. spirits of those who left before me. Welcome! ".
Let's take a cup or a glass full of wine and drink some, after having said: "To the dead!", Leaving a few drops.
We can then light a special candle for each of your dead friends or relatives: it can also be white or colored candles.
To light them we use the dark candle, and with the same candle we also light the Halloween pumpkin lanterns, if we have made any.
After doing this we take a plate or a tray where we will have put some bread or sweets (you can use the "sweets of the dead" if there are typical recipes in your area) and we invite invisible friends to share the food with us.
Always leave a few portions.
Then, taking the dark candle, we go to all the rooms and turn on all the lights, maybe just for a few minutes.
Let's go out the front door and throw a coin: it should be silver but a common coin will do anyway.
We say: "Money on the floor, money under the door" and leave the coin on the floor for a month, perhaps sliding it under the doormat. It will bring good luck to our home.
Let us meditate on the meaning of this holiday and leave the door of the house open to let our invisible friends in!

Witchfully yours,

Using Human Body Parts in Spells
Tumblr media
Many witches believe that the human body is sacred. Whether they’re pantheists, animists, or somewhere in between, most magical practitioners agree that there is some sort of divine or magical essence contained in all living things, including our bodies. But if that’s the case, why do so many witches hesitate to use parts of the body in their craft?
Part of it is the “ick” factor. Western society is shaped by religious and cultural influences that tell us our bodies are unclean, gross, or even scary. In order to comfortably work with the energies of the human body in magic, we have to unlearn these cultural influences.
This post covers the uses of human effects (materials that come from the human body) in witchcraft and magic.
Why Use This Stuff, Anyway?
By far the most common use of human effects in magic is as a taglock. A taglock is an item from the person a spell is meant to affect — either a small piece of their person (such as hair or fingernail clippings), or a personal belonging that is energetically connected to them. A taglock acts as a sort of anchor, tying the energy of a spell to that specific person and providing a direct link between them and the magic. Think of it as an energetic targeting system. This brings faster, more powerful results.
The use of taglocks is connected to the concept of sympathetic magic, which states that what is done to a small part of a person or thing (including an image or effigy) affects the whole. This idea is as old as humans — in fact, some archaeologists believe that Paleolithic cave paintings of injured animals were a form of sympathetic magic meant to manifest successful hunts.
If you need a taglock for a spell and can’t or don’t want to use hair/fingernails/etc., use one of the person’s belongings instead. This can be a business card, a child’s stuffed animal, or a napkin they used at dinner — whatever you can get your hands on. If you can’t get a personal belonging, use a photograph of the person.
Aside from linking magic to a specific person, different human effects have their own magical correspondences (see below). Depending on your spell, it may make sense to include hair as a symbol of personal power and self-expression or menstrual blood as a symbol of releasing old energy. Most witches don’t think twice about using milk or eggs, which come from the bodies of cows and chickens, in their magic, so why shouldn’t we use things from our own bodies as well?
There is an unfortunate stigma around the use of human effects in magic. Things like blood and hair are unfairly associated with dark magic, and many witches avoid them for that reason. Like any other magical tool, human effects can be used in spells for good or ill. You could use a taglock to add power to a healing spell, for example, or put your own hair in a success spell to anchor that success to you. These items are a part of you — they are no more evil or scary than you are.
Ethics and Safety
We’ve already discussed the ethical implications of doing magic on other people. This is especially important to keep in mind when working with human effects, either your own or someone else’s, because you are working directly with that person’s energy. Sympathetic magic gets very up close and personal, so it’s important to take care.
Don’t do anything to the personal effect, whatever it is, that you wouldn’t do to the person themselves. (Yes, this still applies if you’re using one of their possessions, or even a photograph.) Be gentle and respectful. Don’t throw it around or be careless with it. Don’t set it on fire or cut it up unless you really know what you’re doing and really want to fuck with the person it came from.
There are certain safety precautions that need to be taken when working with human effects, especially bodily fluids. I’ll talk about safety protocol for blood magic in a future post, but for now just be aware of the danger of bloodborne diseases and other possible contaminants. Sexual fluids may carry STIs, for example. For this reason, you should always take care when handling someone else’s bodily fluids. Wear gloves and make sure you don’t have any exposed cuts or sores.
Hair and fingernails are the safest human effects because they contain dead cells, and thus the risk of contagion is low. They’re also usually a little easier to get a hold of, especially if you’re doing magic for another person. Hair and nail clippings are most witches’ go-to taglocks for these reasons.
And finally, do not ever, under any circumstances, eat, drink, or bathe in anything that came from another person’s body. Some older spells call for adding blood or some other bodily fluid to food, and some old initiation rituals require the initiate to drink wine containing a drop of blood from each group member. In modern times, we know that this is dangerous because it could potentially spread disease. Trust me when I say there is no good reason to ever consume someone else’s DNA. Just don’t.
Correspondences
Below are correspondences for some human effects that can fairly easily be incorporated into spells. I have also included substitutions, for those who truly just aren’t comfortable working with human effects. These substitutions may not be quite as powerful, but the symbolism is similar.
Note: The use of blood in magic is a huge topic with a rich history, so I have chosen to devote an entire post to it. Blood is not mentioned in this post, but I will be posting about it soon!
Correspondences of Human Effects
Hair is closely tied to a person’s essence and personal power, perhaps more so than any other effect besides blood. In many cultures, hair is never cut to avoid dispersing this power. (Think of the story of Samson in the Bible.) Hair is also associated with the head, mental abilities, and thoughts. Hair is one of the most powerful taglocks, and can also be used in spells related to strength, beauty, and mental clarity. Use a few of your own hairs to tie something up to bind it with your personal power.
Substitutes for Hair: clove (for empowerment), rosemary (for mental clarity), catnip (for beauty)
Saliva lends itself to many purposes because of its wide array of correspondences. On one hand it is associated with kissing and sex (think of the phrase “swapping spit” to describe kissing), but on the other it can be extremely offensive (spitting on someone is a very old and very strong insult). Saliva can also be substituted for any other bodily fluid.
Substitutes for Saliva: cardamom (for love and lust), vinegar (for cursing and insult)
Fingernails are, of course, linked to the hands and to a person’s ability to act. They’re also one of the easiest human effects to collect, which make them a good choice for a taglock. I usually see fingernails used in this context rather than to bring a certain energy to a spell.
Substitute for Fingernails: clove (to empower action)
Semen and Vaginal Arousal Fluid are, naturally, associated with sex. Both are associated with pure potential, fertility, and action, and can give your spell a heck of a power boost. Use sexual fluids in spells for growth and new beginnings. They are also useful in love magic — anoint a red candle with your sexual fluids to attract a lover.
Substitutes for Semen and Vaginal Arousal Fluid: penis or vulva shaped candle (for sex magic), rice (for fertility), rose (for love), cinnamon (for lust)
Urine is a traditional ingredient in the witch bottle, a powerful protective charm. It’s also found in both curses and love spells in American folk magic. Interestingly, it’s also used to break curses. One of my teachers practiced Appalachian folk magic, and she used to say that the most surefire way to get rid of any curse was to “piss on a brick.” (Red bricks are also associated with protection.) As you can see, urine is perhaps the most versatile bodily fluid when it comes to magical uses.
Substitutes for Urine: vinegar (for protection, cursing, and curse breaking), cardamom (for love and lust)
Human effects are a powerful way to add strength to any spell. Next time you’re conjuring healing, manifestation, or love, consider throwing some hair or fingernails in there. Let your body’s magic be a part of your craft.

A Page Out of my Book Of Shadows: Powerful Banishing Spell
The Spell:
Cleanse the area, using your preferred cleansing method.
Make a circle of salt around you going counter clockwise.
Use a large black or white taper candle.
Carve, sigils, runes, or intent into your candle. Personalize this step to your own practice.
Anoint your candle with banishing oil from top to bottom.
Meditate on your intent of banishing and specifically what it is you wish to banish from your home.
Repeat, “With the power of the elements in me, toxic energy will no longer be, Negative [Entity / person / spirit / etc.] be out of my life, leave my space with only light.” Three times.
On the last chant light your candle.
Meditate with your candle in the circle of salt until the candle has completely burnt down.
The oil:
Use any oil of your choice as a base. Such as: Olive Oil, Vegetable Oil, Sun Flower Oil, Avocado Oil, etc.
Add: Cayenne pepper
Chili powder
Cinnamon
Black Pepper
Make sure to mix the ingredients together regularly.
Let this sit for about a week before use.
When the oil is done sitting strain through a cheese cloth to get only oil.
This oil can be a skin irritant so please try not to touch it directly with your skin.
Why am I sharing this?
When I began my practice I made a lot of mistakes and invited a lot of entities into my home that I should not have. I did not know how to banish entities from my space so I spent years living in a very heavily haunted home. There was never a dull moment. The entities in my home made the mental health of me and my family much worse. We had a bird that could speak and would often speak to one of the entities in the home. After the bird unexpectedly died of unknown causes the entity was claiming that he killed the bird and continued to brag about it. Finally after a lot of research I was able to banish them.
I do not think that banishing spells are accessible enough to young witches. In fact I see many people preach about how important banishing is and then refuse to teach novice witches how to banish. I agree that young witches should not rely on social medias as their only source of information. However, it is important to continue to keep this kind of information as accessible as possible for the ones that do or the ones who may have limited access to resources.
I have used this method of banishing multiple times and it has worked without a problem every time. I wanted to share this incase anyone needed to know how to banish.
Please stay safe.

A Ritual to Banish Unwanted Spirits and Invoke Benevolent Spirits/A Diety
Tumblr media
This spell can go in two different ways, it can be a blood ritual if you choose but it will work without blood.
💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Ingredients:
A white candle
Sage
Wormwood
Salt
Sugar
Garlic(powder or clove)
Basil
Pepper
Marjoram
Dill
Lemon
Vanilla
Coffee
Lavender
Rose
Thyme
Oregano
Spearmint(you can use stuff like mouthwash or other things that contain spearmint)
3 bowls
Blood(optional)
Instructions:
Light the white candle and place it at the head of your alter/infront of your spell
Draw a pentacle on each wrist for protection
Grind together garlic, basil, pepper, lemon, marjoram, thyme, and oregano in one bowl
Mix together your wormwood, sage, and dill then set it on fire
While burning the above say: “I call forth____(say the name of the spirit you wish to banish. if you do not know the name, say “the unwanted entity”)”
Pour the ashes into the other mixture and combine the two while chanting: “leave this space and leave me be. I banish you, so more it be”
Put that mixture to the side
In a new bowl, mix together sugar, lemon, wormwood, coffee, salt, vanilla, and spearmint.
THIS STEP IS FOR THE BLOOD RITUAL ONLY. Prick your finger and put your blood into the mixture. I did this ritual with my coven so we all pricked our fingers for this part.
While placing the rose petals and lavender on top of the mixture, say: “spirits of good, spirits of light, protect me now through day and through night. I invite you in this now purged space, to guard and cleanse it with your grace. From_____ I am free. Now give me peace. So mote it be”
If you are invocking a certain diety or spirit you can add a little prayer to them at the end
Pour white wax onto the mixture and your spell is sealed

Guide to Meditation
Many times, it is said that one must meditate by emptying their mind of thoughts, but this is only one method of meditation. In truth, meditation is much more complex than many may think, as there are many uses of it, but it is at the same time one of the easiest ways to improve your spiritual discipline. There are two primary ways of meditating: the silencing of thoughts, and the meditation where you focus on something (a spiritual teaching, a method of healing yourself, a sigil, etc). Personally, I have found the meditations of focusing on things to be much more rewarding than the silencing of thoughts, but you can do either or use both whenever you wish.
How to meditate: For any meditation, you need to begin by sitting somewhere comfortable (it can be in complete darkness, or during the daytime if you want; either way, you need to be alone). You can lay down to meditate if you need to, but it is best to do this while sitting up-right since your focus and flow of breath is better in this position. As you sit relaxed, you close your eyes and breathe deeply and slowly, relaxing your thoughts and bringing yourself into the present. As you breathe in, hold your breath for a couple seconds and then release it slowly, continue this for a few repetitions as you relax your mind.
Once you do that, you either stop your thoughts or you begin focusing on whatever you need to focus on (like a spiritual teaching). The only meditations where you don’t close your eyes are when you want to stare directly into a sigil, yantra, or talisman in order to gain its benefits (you cannot use sigils or talismans without meditating on them, simply placing them somewhere doesn’t have any affects since your mind must connect with it). Additionally, meditation cannot be done by simply sitting relaxed and thinking of positive things, since this is simply relaxing and doesn’t go deeper than that.
If you find difficulty focusing or staying still during the process, you need to continue doing meditations and repeatedly discipline the mind and body to do as you wish. This can be painful, but it will gradually work if you remain determined with it, and the process will become easier. Also remember that during meditations where you must focus on something, you need to stay focused on it as much as possible; if you notice your thoughts drifting, make sure to immediately bring them back to your focus.
As you meditate, the process should gradually lull you into a deeply relaxed state. And so by the time you finish, your mind should feel rejuvenated. The effects of meditation become stronger the more often you meditate, so it may not seem to be doing much at first, so you must remain patient and continue until you gradually become more attuned to the impacts it has. For more experienced meditators, a meditation should normally last from 30 minutes to an hour, or longer if desired. If you are at this stage, deep meditation should begin to feel as if you are entering a trance-like state where your mind enters a different frequency which is lower and less active; this low frequency allows for better access to one’s astral senses if they’ve been developed enough. If you are a beginner to meditation, you should meditate for at least 10 minutes, but ideally for 20 minutes or longer. Overall, if you are a spiritual person, especially one who is focused on gaining Awakening throughout the years, you should meditate at least twice a week.
Things that can help meditation:
Mala beads
Incense
Tibetan singing bowls
Low-frequency ambience (not too much noise; a good example is Cryo Chamber)
Some people may meditate better in a dark room than a bright room
Best times for meditation tend to be either in the early morning or late night (calmer times of the day)
Meditation Examples:
Core meditation – This is the meditation to achieve core awakening, where you gain permanent access to your higher self and obtain easier communication with them. You must focus gently on the centre of your abdomen, right beneath your ribcage, and imagine a golden orb of light here. This needs to be done for 20 minutes, and to be performed every single day for at least one year (or else the progress is lost and it needs to start over). Ideally, this meditation should be done once you know of your higher self’s identity and name.
Meditation on the colour magenta – This colour has a specific frequency that helps you to gain access to your astral senses; this process happens very gradually and needs many repetitions, as well as your own training to gain these skills. You only need to stare into this colour (even an image from your phone) for at least 10 minutes, and to do this often. While you meditate on the colour, make sure you keep in mind your intention to gain astral abilities.
Meditation on a sigil, talisman, or yantra – Staring into a working sigil, talisman or yantra (these all need to be created in specific ways, not just designs). The meditation should last for at least 10 minutes.
Meditation while chanting a mantra or enn – This can also be done while staring into a yantra or sigil.
Meditation on a spiritual teaching – Any spiritual teaching you receive that you wish to ponder deeply upon.
Meditation without thought – Stopping the flow of thoughts so you can become mentally still; this is a meditation best for those who follow the Right Hand Path, seeking to remove their sense of self.
Meditation on the breathing-in of fire element – If you want to gain some closeness to the element of fire and gradually use it to help you become more empowered and aware of the strength you have, this is a good meditation to use (especially if you are following Demonic teachings). To perform this, begin the meditation process as usual and then project yourself into a vision- a temple with a blazing fire at the altar. Stand before the fire and focus on breathing it in deeply, hold it within yourself for a couple seconds, and then release it. Continue doing this as long as you need.
Meditation of the releasing of inner-burdens – This is a good meditation to help you become relieved from built-up stress. Begin the meditation as usual and then visualize yourself in the depths of space when ready, with only darkness and stars in the distance. As you breathe in, visualize your inner-burdens gathering up together inside you, then hold it, and breathe out slowly as you exhale the burden into space. Continue this as long as you need.
Meditation of oneness with Nature – This is for sitting outside in a tranquil area with trees and plants. Sit comfortably in the grass and begin the meditation as normal. As your mind relaxes, vividly imagine that you are a tree and have spent all your life in this spot, communicating through senses with the other plants. Imagine you have roots going deep into the ground, and pay attention to what you sense from nature’s energy.
Meditation to rise above despair – When you are feeling strong emotions of despair, and these are threatening to take hold of you and cause you to weep, you can use this meditation if you use your will-power. As you are experiencing this pains and mental darkness, visualize yourself in the labyrinth of your mind and begin projecting bright flames into all the corridors, destroying the lies of your Shadow so you can begin seeing the truth of what is happening. Tell yourself that you know it’s just a lie repeatedly, and then project yourself quickly upwards as if you have giant wings, so you expand beyond the labyrinth, high above it. Imagine yourself as a burning black flame here, and hold your focus to bring yourself into a more controlled state of mind. Focus on filling your mind with either a tranquil darkness or a blazing light, whichever best suits you.
Meditation of fire-staring – This is a traditional meditation method in Tantric practices. You simply need to light a candle in a dark room and sit before it. Stare directly into the flame without blinking for as long as you can.
Meditation of the Wasteland – This is a meditation for more serious practitioners who wish to challenge themselves; though refrain from this if you are prone to depression. For this, begin the meditation as usual and then vividly visualize yourself in a bleak wasteland, with only grey craggy rocks and a dark cloudy sky above. There are no plants or other signs of life, only you and silence. You must walk through this wasteland and come to terms with what has been lost in the past, and what must be lost in order to grow (negative habits, toxic people, arrogance, envy, materialism, etc). As you wander the wasteland, pull these negative attachments out from yourself, as if they are a black vapour, and throw them into the distance where they dissipate. Exit this meditation whenever you feel ready.

get the fuck away from me spell
Tumblr media
this is a basic and powerful banishment spell to keep a toxic, malicious person from influencing you, affecting your world, and attempting to hurt you. best done during a waning moon. you will need:
> black pepper (banishment, protection from evil)
> cloves (banishing hostile and negative forces)
> vinegar (banishing, binding, and averting evil)
> black and white candle
> paper and pen with black ink
> a jar with a lid
1. as you light your candles, recognize that the flame creates an aura of fire, will and strength. the black candle burns and summons protection from evil; the white candle burns and brings you cleansing and purifying. meditate on the flames and allow their warm auras to surround you.
2. write the person’s full name (if it’s known) on a small piece of paper. hold the paper in your hands and let yourself feel angry, hurt, sad, or whatever this person makes you feel. charge the paper with the pain this person has caused you, until you feel done. then, take your pen and scribble out the person’s name until it’s completely blacked out and opaque.
3. fold the paper up as many times as you can, and throw it in the jar. sprinkle the pepper and cloves over the paper, then fill the jar with vinegar. this mixture banishes their evil from you and drowns out their will and power to harm you. close the jar tightly. if you wish, use some black wax from your candle to drip onto the lid and seal the jar shut.
4. place your banishment jar in a dark, hidden place, like the bottom drawer of a dresser or the corner of a closet. keep it forever, or until you feel its purpose is fulfilled.

Rethinking How Paganism Engages Culture
Tumblr media
There’s a common sentiment in the greater pagan community that, “You don’t choose who calls you.” Most pagans are converts (meaning they weren’t raised in the faith they practice now), and many of us feel that we were called by the gods to our current faith. Those callings often come from gods who have little or no biological, cultural, or ancestral link to us. Whether Wiccan, neopagan, Heathen, Hellenist, Roman pagan, eclectic, or some other path, many of us feel that our gods came to us, rather than the other way around.
And yet, we get really weird when those divine callings cross modern racial and cultural lines.
Don’t get me wrong, cultural appropriation is a big issue, and I’m not trying to argue that it isn’t or to say that we shouldn’t be mindful of how we engage with living cultures. However, most white pagans (including myself until very recently) have a very simplistic understanding of cultural appropriation, which leads us to create very simplistic and imperfect solutions. This understanding usually includes differentiating between “closed” traditions (i.e., those with an initiatory, ethnic, or cultural barrier to entry) and “open” traditions. If something is part of a closed tradition, most white pagans will say it should be left alone or even avoided by those outside the tradition, no exceptions. On the other hand, open traditions are up for grabs.
While this way of thinking about cultural appropriation comes from a well-meaning place, it creates at least as many problems as it solves.
The first step in any social justice work is to acknowledge and accept that there are no easy answers. The desire for a simple, black-and-white solution – preferably with an alphabetical list of which cultural traditions we are allowed to borrow from – is itself a product of white privilege. This overly simplistic approach allows white pagans to get out of doing the work of actually learning about other cultures from members of their living traditions. It allows us to get our gold star for being racially sensitive without actually changing in any significant way.
This idea that you should only worship gods that look like you or have a direct cultural link to you creates artificial barriers and makes it easy for white supremacist groups to hijack pagan rhetoric. It also encourages pagans to create cultural and ideological echo chambers, and makes modern paganism inaccessible to people of color, especially those who may not know their family’s country of origin due to the impact of slavery and/or imperialism.
Amy Hale, PhD sums this far right rhetorical strategy up with chilling simplicity in her essay, “Marketing ‘Rad Trad’: The Growing Co-Influence Between Paganism and the New Right,” in the anthology Bringing Race to the Table: “Proponents of the New Right maintain that cultural separation increases diversity, as do ‘natural’ hierarchies. In this way the New Right rhetorically distinguishes itself from the racism and anti Semitism associated with Historical Fascism, while still providing the intellectual justification for White nationalism.”
And later in the same essay: “In fact, the rhetorical emphasis on maintaining cultural diversity initially appears very Leftist, and hardly fascist at all. Cultural diversity is to be promoted and cherished, as long as racial purity is maintained.”
Another issue is that this way of thinking completely ignores the realities of multiculturalism and cultural sharing. This is how the real world works. Cultural sharing happens naturally in families and communities where people from different backgrounds are brought together. Traditions are shared and sometimes syncretized to produce something new, something both.
In the essay “Shoop! Transforming Stereotypes with Love,” Erick DuPree talks about his experiences as a white child growing up in a majority Black community, and how that cultural exchange has affected his practice. When talking about how he engages with these cultures in his spiritual practice, DuPree says: “I came into the dialogue seeking wisdom and from a place of inquiry. I made the choice to make the connection and build relationships, rather than walls of opinion. This approach lends itself in cultivating a cultural exchange over appropriation.”
As DuPree points out, the key here is to build genuine relationships with the goal of connection, not initiation into a culture’s sacred mysteries. When we have a genuine connection to a cultural tradition or feel called to build such a connection, researching it from the privacy of our own homes is not enough. We have to be willing to get out there, meet people, and be part of the community.
In her essay “Reweaving the Web: Pagans, Privilege, and Solidarity,” also in Bringing Race to the Table, Claire “Chuck” Bohman says: “Guarding against the ‘culture vulture’ does not mean that we should only engage with spiritual traditions or practices of which we are ancestrally connected. Quite the contrary, we need to celebrate the many manifestations of divinity in its multiplicity of racial, gender, and cultural manifestations. However, I believe we must always consider the ways in which our privilege plays out in our spiritual journeys and be mindful of the impact that these practices may have on those who are from positions of less privilege.”
Or, as Najaa Young says in their article, “Black Gods in the 21st Century: A Cautionary Tale About Folks,” “Come in, sit down, keep your hands to yourself and do twice as much listening as you do talking.”
*********
