Señorita Camila is sneaky as fuck

I really don’t know what they tried to do with Señorita. The song is really good and catchy, so I doubt it will have many problems in the charts. But the MV kinda sucks. They went for something steamy and hot, but it’s not something Shawmila can achieve. At least not with each other.

Either that or they were straightbaiting their fans

I can imagine the conversation over this song:

“So, what do you think?”

“Señorita is really catchy, Camila. But we’re afraid it’s not aligned with the image you have to maintain with the general public

”… Can I bring Shawn?“

”… Okay"

Whatever, let’s go to what matters the most: the lyrics.

I love it when you call me, señorita

Camila opens the song with this line with a word play. A smart one. There are two ways you can sing this line: “I love it when you call me señorita” x “I love it when you call me, señorita”. Yes, you nerds, the comma plays a big difference here. In the first sentence, Camila is saying that she loves it when her partner calls her señorita, which doesn’t make sense unless she has a fetish or something because señorita literally translates to “Ms.” in English. That would be like Camila singing “I love it when you call me miss”.

On the other hand, in the second sentence, Camila is saying that she loves it when her “señorita” - aka Lauren - calls her. Much better, huh? By playing with the comma placement, Camila was able to sing to a woman knowing that GP won’t notice because they don’t care about lyrics in depth. Sneaky little lesbian.

The mention of Miami could be a reference to Camila only or to Camren, it doesn’t really matter. What’s important here is that Camila was anxious upon first seeing Lauren. Let’s remember what Camila said about first meeting Lern:

Damn, she can sing! Damn, she’s pretty too!

It’s possible that Camila might’ve had a crush on Lauren ever since they met. For Lauren, the feelings came slower.

So many Camren references in two lines… Let’s start with the sun and the moon, very obvious Camren symbols here. Dancing is also a very common theme in Camren songs and I can’t even count on my fingers how many times it shows up. The line also references drinking, which has appeared in songs like OMG, Sauced Up, and Sangria Wine.

Locked in the hotel There’s just some things that never change You say we’re just friends But friends don’t know the way you taste

This is an obvious reference to “Like Friends Do”. And it also helps us put a time frame in this song: Lauren was still struggling to accept her feelings for Camila and claimed they were just friends. But given the sexually charged themes, I would put it in the end of 2014, right after Like Friends Do. It’s when Camila got tired of waiting for Lauren.

All in all, Camila is really smart: she made use of her Shawmila fanbase in order to release a Camren song right under our noses.
