(belated) year end fic summary 2023
it is almost the end of january...in my defense i was on vacation during the turn of the year!
Total number of completed stories: 3 on ao3 (thank you mdtb week), and then um. 1 unposted fic for sumeru zine. and i did not post the zine fic from last year...i kind of don't want to :')
Fics Posted:
(All Naruto/MDTB)
mastery: vague magic au because i dislike complex worldbuilding❤️ this was my first time writing madatobi and i was actually a little scared - i've been rotating these guys in my head for a long time and i was worried about my grasp of their characters. still am, but regardless i was very happy to finally write them. this fic is largely vibes only, but i like writing that too!
lessons learned: first M+ fic :D yeah i don't know, i had an awful flash of inspiration and thought that if not now then i'd never write something like it again. i can't say it's good, but it was definitely very fun to write! i think this is the one that did best among the 3 i wrote for mdtb week haha
what the water gave us: f/f madatobis!!! i just really wanted to write tobirama washing madara's hair, and that devolved into bathing together and some tender intimacy. i love them :'')
Total word count: 3919 on ao3, 3103 for sumeru zine fic = 7022 in total. there's a little bit from discarded mdtb week bits but i won't count those
What WIPs are you working on?
....none! i have nothing i'm actively working on and nothing i really want to work on? i floated the idea of writing something for ninefox gambit after i read it, but i really don't know what i'd write. i don't think i could appropriately match the tone of the books which is making me chicken out haha...
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?
this seems about right tbh - posting for a fandom event and not writing for anything outside it.
What’s your own favorite story of the year?
what the water gave us, i think! i like both that one and lessons learned but i think i do love f/f mdtb a bit more.
Did you take any writing risks this year?
writing something with a rating larger than T
Do you have any fanfic or ofic goals for the New Year?
anyway....my goals....write more i guess 😭 i want to write more things that aren't for posting!!! i have so many stupid and self-indulgent stories rattling around in my brain and i want to make some sort of record of them :''))) sometimes i think of banger lines too that get lost immediately afterwards too and itd be nice to save those :'')))
i did not do this :')
umm...i think...i still want to try that? and also write more drabbles and short stuff that don't need to be a Whole Concept. ahhh i just want to write more.
Most popular/most under-appreciated/most fun to write/story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
n/a
Hardest Story to Write:
sumeru zine fic :'') once again writing to a deadline and a word count was a miserable experience!
Biggest Disappointment/Biggest Surprise:
not writing more :') not even some smaller drabbles on the side...i think zine work last year really burned me out, especially the one day zine. hoping to scale that back this year so i can focus more on writing...
oh also - i failed at the fandom growth exchange :') wanted to write a phantom tales of the night fic and failed miserably. i'm not good at coming up with casefic plots 😢

what the water gave us
Fandom: Naruto Pairing: Senju Tobirama/Uchiha Madara Additional Tags: Female Senju Tobirama, Female Uchiha Madara, Domestic Fluff, Bathing/Washing, hair washing as a labor of love, Implied/Referenced Sex
@madatobiweek | Day 7: Free Day // Requited Love
The intimacy of their positions struck Madara with sudden clarity. Her neck, bared toward Tobirama in silent offering. Tobirama's soft, exposed belly and direct eye contact. Tobirama's hands in her hair, against her scalp, so, so close to her eyes. Tobirama's motions paused for a brief moment, no doubt cataloging the myriad of emotions that must have flashed across Madara's face, but she continued without commenting. Instead, Tobirama said, “After seeing Aneue’s hair become ruined by the most disgusting things and now having washed yours countless times, any desire I might’ve had toward long hair has now been thoroughly diminished. Now, head up.”
Tobirama washes Madara's hair.

lessons learned
Fandom: Naruto | Rating: M Pairing: Senju Tobirama/Uchiha Madara Additional Tags: Established Relationship, Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, background team tobirama, Sexual Content, Fluff
@madatobiweek | Day 2: Teacher // Teashop
“Yes, sensei,” Madara drawls, lazily pulling his fingers out, relishing in the shudder that travels through Tobirama’s body. The oil is slick and warm between his fingers, dripping obscenely onto Tobirama’s skin. Tobirama, however, pushes himself up onto his elbows and glares. “Don’t call me that while we’re fucking.”
Madara derails a proper Team Tobirama training session, remembers a Very Fun Night, and decides to be a menace.

mastery
Fandom: Naruto Pairing: Senju Tobirama/Uchiha Madara Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Magic, Fuuinjutsu, (Briefly) Non-Linear Narrative, making deals
@madatobiweek | Day 1: Marriage // Magic
Just yesterday, Tobirama, standing over a freshly upturned grave, had siphoned the rainwater damp out of the dirt with only an elegant twist of his wrist. He’d held the murky, spiraling orb of grave-dirt water in the palm of his hand, gesturing towards Madara’s shovel with the other. “Go on,” Tobirama had said, voice blunt in a way that made Madara’s blood rear up for a fight, “We don’t have all night.”
Tobirama has mastery over more than just water magic. Madara takes advantage.

year end fic meme 2022!!!!
am i getting worse and worse each year 💀
Total number of completed stories: 3 on ao3. 3 on google docs that i haven't posted yet...i'll get around to posting those when i'm not feeling lazy jfaksndlf
Fics Posted:
On AO3:
The King's Avatar
left with a beautiful memory: my zhangjialefest2022 submission!!! tbh i never would have written this fic if not for really wanting to get something out for 02/22/2022 (even if i wasn't able to make the exact date), but i'm really happy i did write it in the end. it's always missing zhang jiale hours :''))) i am pretty happy with it tbh!! i feel like i was able to include a lot of my zjl headcanons/meta thoughts!
Good Hunting: this fic was a year and a half in the making!!! i am very proud of it actually. hmm what to even say about this! i think my prose slaps, i'm quite satisfied with the narrative, i had a mini breakdown about a stupid minor detail that waylaid the fic for months, and i wrote the last section, the transformation sequence, really early in the process and i'm still very happy with it!!!!! ahhhh having a fic i still feel this good about is really nice.
MDZS
(no) love left: a triple drabble i wrote for the seasons of drabble exchange! my first mdzs fic, and i still like it a lot! jiang cheng & wei wuxian is my favorite mdzs relationship, so ofc i had to take a crack at it :''')
not posted:
Genshin Impact
venti stormterror's lair fic: it's a fic about venti and his relationship with stormterror's lair! wrote it for the scenes of wonder genshin zine...so technically it's public and posted? i just haven't posted it on ao3 yet...if i do it the next few days i'll link it here :'') . i actually do like this one! wanted to exercise my descriptive writing muscles; i don't know how well i did but it was pretty fun to write
ganyu & liyue fic: in a very similar vein, it's a story about liyue changing through ganyu's eyes :') i'm....not super happy with this one ahahaha </3 which is also a reason it hasn't been posted yet. sigh i don't know how to clean it up though!! so the chances of me dumping it on ao3 is pretty low atm...maybe i'll throw it on tumblr first?? ahhh idk!
Witch Hat Atelier
Apprentice's Journey: a fic about qifrey and the girls i wrote for the hempishere witch hat atelier zine! i actually completely forgot about this fic....it was actually such a bitch to write. i had to rewrite it after the first draft was done because of shitty planning.....i'm still not satisfied with the final result but oh well :(
oHHHHHHHHH i just remembered i have some random drabbles?? i will...post those......maybe......maybe ill just . post them at the end of this post LMAO
Total word count: 9041 on ao3.
What WIPs are you working on?
added this question this year LOLOLOL i do have some """"active"""" wips!!!! it's mostly genshin!!!!!!!!! i have a ganqing wip i've been chipping away at for a while now that i do quite like :'D then.....two other genshin fic that i'm writing for two different free/open enrollment genshin zines! one is a lumine & albedo & venti fic that's just kind of about how all three of them are sussy non-humans. the other one is....a bit cringe LOL actually i don't even want to talk about it </3 it's supposed be yanfei & yelan with a fables theme but while i have an outline i do not like it very much :(
BTW my most exciting wip is a nahida & kaveh fic that is currently titled "nahida is my baby girl but kaveh is my babygirl. i hope you understand." however i word vomited a couple hundred freewrite words and now i have no idea how i want to keep writing it. pain pain pain.
i also?? wrote a couple hundred words for a sousou no frieren concept but ehhh that one's fighting me too. not enough meat on the concept sighhh
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?
actually...when you add in the stuff i haven't posted on ao3........including wips....i've written quite a lot! i just wish i had more to post :'')
What’s your own favorite story of the year?
good hunting :)
Did you take any writing risks this year?
hilariously, i think it's joining those two free zines 💀 i'm NOT good at writing to a deadline!!!!!!!! or a prompt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't really want to fail to submit something but i think im gonna flop lmao
Do you have any fanfic or ofic goals for the New Year?
lol...in this question last year i talked about my xsq & smc fic (good hunting) which i've actually finished!! i'm procrastinating on editing it, and actually want to post it for rare pair week so uhhh....yay to me for finishing it? but i guess my goals is to clean it up for rare pair week posting.
HIGHLIGHTING THIS FROM LAST YEAR BC GUESS WHO ACTUALLY FINISHED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Hunting is a fic i'm still proud of so :''''')))) WOOOOOOOOOOO
i also want to finish my 100 sentences blossom duo fic that i started when i first joined qzgs fandom for zhang jiale fest!! i would like to participate this year!!!
this did not happen hahahaha i wrote a whole new fic instead </3
anyway....my goals....write more i guess 😭 i want to write more things that aren't for posting!!! i have so many stupid and self-indulgent stories rattling around in my brain and i want to make some sort of record of them :''))) sometimes i think of banger lines too that get lost immediately afterwards too and itd be nice to save those :'')))
Most popular/most under-appreciated/most fun to write/story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
most fun to write was definitely (no) love left! my recipient had some REALLY banger prompts like dreams/nightmares so i tried to play a bit with that kind of atmosphere/imagery!!! i think it turned out pretty well.
Hardest Story to Write:
Apprentice's Journey, the fic I wrote for the Witch Hat Atelier zine. goddddd that fic was a nightmare to write!!! like pulling teeth!!!!!!!! i've discovered i am NOT good at planning. i need to think very hard about thematic through-lines but sometimes i end up fucking up anyway and need to rewrite the whole thing. but a good thing about this fic is i had some banger lines :))) and maybe i'll post the scrapped bits separately later.
Biggest Disappointment/Biggest Surprise:
None

random drabbles i dont really want to post elsewhere
crawl back to
in the burial mounds, wei wuxian is broken down and remade. piece by piece, the graveyard strips wei wuxian of flesh and bone. the shattered skeletons of animals and humans and creatures unidentifiable clamor hungrily. they are desperate. they are cruel.
wei wuxian drags his body forward. he does not know where he is going. sometimes, he does not know if he is alive. wei wuxian has long passed knowing if he wants to be alive.
he is limping—he is stumbling—he is crawling—his hands are wet and sticky. under the dim light of a sun he cannot see, a river of red burns against the barren dirt.
late
a chengqing au that appeals to one person (me) where jiang cheng saves wen qing because he thinks that keeping wen qing “hostage” in lotus pier might be able to convince wei wuxian to come home…
jiang cheng—sandu shengshou, sect leader, estranged shidi to the villainous yiling laozu—leaves for the burial mounds with a mission.
he’ll succeed. he has to. surely wei wuxian won’t be able to deny him this time, not when he’s come prepared with a trump card. surely.
later, when jiang cheng returns to lotus pier, his feet carry him directly to a secluded room. locked and warded, but not heavily. before he can form a coherent thought, he pushes open the door.
inside: wen qing, sitting on a plain bed. she jerks to attention, hope glittering in her eyes.
“...he’s not here,” wen qing says after a long moment.
what can he even say? there are emotions he doesn’t have a name for digging a nest in the pit of his stomach. battering his ribcage. tearing into his beating heart.
“by the time i got to him,” he rasps, the words like brambles scraping against his throat, “it was–” –i was– “–too late.”
dirt on your cheek
under the flickering candle-light, beidou is all languid grins and loose limbs. even here, in ningguang’s private chambers, beidou radiates sleek confidence.
ningguang lifts her hand to the handsome curve of beidou’s face, tracing the shadow of beidou’s eyepatch.
beidou lifts a questioning eyebrow.
“there was something on your cheek, that’s all,” ningguang says. her fingers linger for a moment longer.
laughing, beidou pushes her down onto the bed. “can’t have anyone think the great ningguang is sappy, huh?”
ningguang lets herself fall gracefully, a pleased smile curling up her lips. “i suppose you’d know a little something about that.”

my 2022 ao3 wrapped! alas the nice website i used last year isn't online anymore so i snagged the code from here and made some adjustments to fit the stats i wanted to collect!!
aiya!!!!!!!!!!!!!! anyway after i got all the stats i realized that these are cumulative visitation numbers...ao3 doesn't have a separate tracker for yearly visitation numbers :'D SOO once again a ton of the same longfic from last year on the list!!!!!!!!!! i shall comment on some notable ones hahahaha
Tumblr media
it seems i am cursed into a yearly naruto/madatobi relapse...count your blessings my beloved <3333333333333333 i did reread this one multiple times lately! im so obsessed with it! ALSO CHERRY WINE MY BELOVED <3333 days on a wire (the sequel) isn't on here but rest assured ive ALSO reread that one ten million times.
war in times of peace is ~40 chapters long...i reread it again this year which would bump it up the list hahaha. blue is a bad color is also another many chaptered fic (though it is actually a comic!)
dogs is on here?????? i didn't do a reread at all (i probably never will tbh that fic is so fucking depressing. it is really, really good. but extremely soul crushing)
a consequence of loyalty -- longfic that i think i caught up on some old updates for but tbh i couldn't actually tell you the plot of that fic 😭 aiya....
children of war: a drabble/shortfic collection. i think i've read through it once before so this makes sense.
voluntary victim...i think i tried doing a reread this year?? but i didn't get all the way through
Tumblr media
ITS JUST. MADATOBI AUTHORS................... (+ one fengqing one genshin one multifandom) sorry for madatobi brainrot <33333
most read fandoms...makes sense??? earlier this year i was pretty into mdzs/tgcf...it carried over from last year. and i did have a brief gintama relapse!!!!!!! and ofc qzgs <3333333
Tumblr media
this past month i went through ALL THREE HUNDRED pages of the senju tobirama tag. i was akin to a starving beast. if tobirama wasn't the top read character then what was the whole point!!!!!!!!! i like that wangxian is still the top ship even though i still don't actively seek out wangxian fic jdflaknsdlkf YUNMENG SHUANGJIE ON THE OTHER HAND...YESSIR i went pretty deep into the jiang cheng & wei wuxian tag too 😭😭
shoutout to fengqing and haikavetham for being the only ships of their fandom on this list. i love haikavetham but i am not a big fan of most fanon characterizations :((((
Tumblr media
wanted to add this one just for fun! i actually had to mess with the code a bit and get either the 2nd or 3rd fic on the list because the others were fics i just clicked into out of curiosity but didn't actually read 😭 i think one of them was the infamous wyb/xz fic, and the other was no paths are bound tgcf famous longfic that i just...did not want to read
most notable one is probably watercast! super old voltron fic from like....2017? that i finally got around to catching up on old chapter update alerts for :'') it is actually quite good! alas it hasn't updated in a few years
wooooo another year of wasting time reading a ton of fic <333 excited to see what amazing fic next year will bring!!!

QZGS Fanwork Rec Bingo
There are many works I could recommend in this talented fandom, but I picked out a few that would give me my bingo. XD
Many thanks to Shadaras for running this event! None of these fics have any relevant content warnings.
A Work from Before 2020
Purring Into Your Heart by swanfrost
Flower shop & Tattoo Parlor AU with CATS! This is the fic that made me crave that rarest of flavors: soft Blood and Blossoms. Have I mentioned the kitties? Cuddling kitties? With art?
A Fic Longer than 20k
A Whistle in the Wind by senata_isivelia
My Criminal Duo bible! I love longfic, and I especially love longfic about non-powerhouse teams. <3 This fic follows the rise and fall of Fang Rui & Lin Jingyan’s partnership, as well as exploring their backgrounds (Fang Rui’s mom is my favorite!). Plenty of knives and fluff, just the way it should be.
Made you Laugh
The Misadventures of (The Cardboard Cutout) Ye Qiu by Fayah
A fandom classic! A hilarious exposition of in-universe social media and memes that spawned in the absence of Ye Xiu having ANY social media presence (with a bonus Surprise Special Guest Appearance!).
Pre-canon
Conqueror and His Conquered by Lyndol, translated by Caylum
Probably my favorite Tiny Herb & Wang Jiexi-centric fic. I’m very grateful this gem is available to the English fandom, and I’m so pleased to have an opportunity to recommend it. This fic spans the pre-canon period from Wang Jiexi’s decision to seal the magician style through Tiny Herb’s championship win, and it really digs into how difficult that journey was for Wang Jiexi. Wang Jiexi’s relationship with Fang Shiqian deserves a shoutout - both funny and heartwarming! - but at its heart this is a character study of Wang Jiexi himself. His personal development through the story ties in beautifully with Tiny Herb’s developing success, and the ending is spot-on perfect.
Fanart
Any piece of Blurb_Brain’s art
I couldn’t decide on one favorite piece, so I’m recommending Blurb’s whole portfolio. I’m always impressed by their range and talent. Pieces I’m especially fond of (yes, I’m very biased!) are this Void duo piece, Glory Pro Alliance Small Team Logos and Merch Ideas, and this SMQ & YX piece that goes along with Blurb’s equally delightful fic!

left with a beautiful memory
the king's avatar word count: 1.9k characters: zhang jiale, zhang jiale & sun zheping notes: written for @zhangjialefest 2022 summary: Three times Zhang Jiale says goodbye to something, and one time he says hello.
Could someone like him really, truly say goodbye to Glory?
Zhang Jiale thinks this of Sun Zheping sometimes. After all, Sun Zheping was the one who had dreamed big enough to want to aim for the professional league. At that point in time, Zhang Jiale had been rather content just playing Glory as an MMO—maybe in the future he would have been scouted for a different team, or he would have tried his luck (hah!) auditioning through a training camp.
But those musings never lead anywhere good, and eventually Zhang Jiale tucks that pocket of hurt away.
Mostly, though, Zhang Jiale wonders this about himself.

Good Hunting
the king's avatar word count: 6.8k characters: Su Mucheng & Xiao Shiqin notes: AU of the animated short & short story "Good Hunting". Posted for qzgs rare pair week 2022 summary: Xiao Shiqin: a demon hunter turned steam engineer. Su Mucheng: a huli jing who's lost her magic. In a world changed drastically by the advent of steam industrialization, Xiao Shiqin and Su Mucheng must struggle to survive in unexpected ways.
In the time before—before the white men anchored their ships on the country’s shores and spread their poison through the rivers and the air and into the emperor’s ears—Xiao Shiqin met a fox.
As far as first meetings went, it was not the most auspicious, and she was not a fox so much as a huli jing—a temptress spirit that could take on the form of a human or the shape of a fox at will—could be called a fox. Mostly, Xiao Shiqin remembers the triumphant smile of his uncle as his blade cut clean through the neck of the older huli jing, and the sickening sound of metal slicing through flesh and bone.

(no) love left
modao zushi word count: 300 notes: written for seasons of drabbles exchange. summary: jiang cheng & wei wuxian | a dream? or a memory?
(read on ao3)
The path to the Burial Mounds is dry and dead, just like the first time he walked up it.
He’s walking alone—he’s leading a heaving mass of cultivators—he’s hand in hand with his sister draped in wedding red—
“Jiang Cheng!” Wei Wuxian’s voice cuts through the fog.
The sight of him, stepping through the trees and into light, is enough to close Jiang Cheng’s throat. That fucking flute in his hand, Suibian nowhere to be seen, carefree smile same as always—
“Wei Wuxian!” Jiang Cheng yells back. He walks forward, because when in his life has he ever been afraid of Wei Wuxian?
“Aiya, Jiang Cheng. Don’t you know how to send a letter? I’ll make you plant radishes until you drop! Is that what the illustrious Jiang-zongzhu wants to do all day?”
I don’t want to visit, Jiang Cheng wants to say, I want you to come home, but Wei Wuxian hasn’t stopped talking.
“Wei Wuxian!” Filled with nameless fury, Jiang Cheng lunges to grab the front of his robes. As Wei Wuxian stumbles, the tendrils of resentful energy at his feet writhe, then burst, swirling around them in a rising storm. He’s holding Wei Wuxian in his fists on the path to the Burial Mounds, he’s cradling Jiang Yanli in his arms in Nightless City and there’s so much blood, he’s neither here nor there with only Sandu in his hands staring through the darkness at a cacophony of resentful energy devouring itself with Wei Wuxian at its center—
(When has Jiang Cheng ever been afraid for Wei Wuxian—)
. . .
Jiang Cheng thrashes awake with a gasp. The air is warm. Clean. Lotus-scent floats through the windows. All he hears is the sound of his ragged breathing.
For the rest of the night, sleep eludes him.

year end fic meme 2021!
i wrote very little this year lol.....
Total number of completed stories: 4 on ao3. the same as last year, again LOL. 5 drunk writing prompts on tumblr.
Fics Posted:
On AO3:
The King's Avatar
mononoke: sun xiang & qiu fei princess mononoke au. my qzgs masquerade submission. i kind of regret not trying to hide at all but also i didn't get the inspiration for this until pretty much the last day. i still had a lot of fun writing it though! i wanted to practice tackling aus without sinking in a lot of worldbuilding time and work, and the word count limit was great for that.
Genshin Impact
Somewhat surprisingly, my most written fandom on ao3 this year.
the flowers of yesteryear: my xiaoven exchange submission! xiaoven reincarnation au!! i love reincarnation aus, but i really don't think i did this one justice. it was still a good experience, even though i was writing and editing right past the deadline. shoutout to cel for the last minute beta :'D
the kind of love i've been dreaming of: ganyu/keqing drabble for multifandom drabble exchange! not much to say except i really liked this one
dear and divine: zhongli/xiao drabble for mfd. i also really liked this one hehe
on tumblr:
drunk writing prompts: cerui, blossom duo, tyranny team bonding, linfang, fr/smc
Total word count: 6981 on ao3.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?
definitely much less. as always, i wish i wrote more, but most of my new fandoms this year were fandoms i didn't have much urge to write in. shl, mdzs, and svsss all had enough in their source material and in the fics i read that i felt pretty satisfied, and everything i could want to write would require writing above my skill level, or someone else had already done it better. which, i know, two cakes and all that, but still. 0 urge to write anything!
What’s your own favorite story of the year?
hmm...mononoke i guess.....flowers of yesteryear makes me cringe a little, and the two mfd drabbles don't feel like proper enough stories to be favorites....
Did you take any writing risks this year?
not really ;-; biggest one is probably joining xv exchange since deadlines are hell and i had to write more than 300 words
Do you have any fanfic or ofic goals for the New Year?
lol...in this question last year i talked about my xsq & smc fic (good hunting) which i've actually finished!! i'm procrastinating on editing it, and actually want to post it for rare pair week so uhhh....yay to me for finishing it? but i guess my goals is to clean it up for rare pair week posting.
i also want to finish my 100 sentences blossom duo fic that i started when i first joined qzgs fandom for zhang jiale fest!! i would like to participate this year!!!
Most popular/most under-appreciated/most fun to write/story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
the sad answer is....none of them really? this year has been pretty lackluster in fics from me. flowers of yesteryear, being xiaoven, was most popular. mononoke was the least, but i felt like it was pretty appreciated in the qzgs circle. most fun to write: ganqing drabble i guess? and nothing really stands out in the last question. i'm very lukewarm on all these answers :')
Hardest Story to Write:
....flowers of yesteryear :')
Biggest Disappointment/Biggest Surprise:
None.

my cringe ao3 wrapped 2021 (reading):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can really tell what fandoms i cycled through this year!! tka is a constant from last year, i go in and out of naruto, but this year was probably genshin -> word of honor -> svsss -> mdzs. not too many surprises there.
for most read writers:
a lot of them are just longfic writers. 00janeblone wrote the grand unified theory of sqq which is. HELLA long. the chapter count alone puts it at the top of my list. madmothmadame, danya324, and tiredrazzberry also wrote longfic. i don't think i did a full reread of MMM's CYB, but i'm pretty sure i did a whole reread of danya324's SWWAM.
nirejseki has a lot of shorter fic that i saw a lot while scrolling through the mdzs archive so not surprised there. technorat....the amount of times ive reread voluntary victim & their og!sqq a/b/o fic....embarrassing. synoshian and madmaenad are tka writers, but i don't think i binged any of their longfic this year??? i could have! time is a lie!!
most visited fics:
wow all of them are longfic except #10. it's also embarrassing the amount of times i've reread cherry wine. i followed the tiger and it's skin about halfway thru its updating schedule, and then stopped and waited for it to finish before rereading the whole thing in one go. woooo longfic
characters & ships:
it's so funny how og!sqq is the only non mdzs on that list. i really love shen jiu. what a wretched little man.
ships....not too surprising there? a smattering of mdzs, wenzhou, qijiu, bingqiu, madatobi. yup, sounds about right. wangxian being at the top of this list is also kind of funny considering i'm pretty lukewarm on them....but the fic quality is phenomenal.
i've also realized that a good half of my most read fandoms list is just alternate adaptations of mdzs and tka. i wonder what my list would be without them!
read a lot of good fic this year! wonder what fandoms i'll be in next year :'D

mononoke
the king's avatar word count: 2k notes: written for qzgs masquerade 2021 summary: qiu fei & sun xiang princess mononoke au.
“I’ll cut your throat,” the wolf boy growled. “I’ll kill you right now.” The edge of his blade pressed into his neck. Blood began to bead onto the glinting steel“ You’re beautiful,” Sun Xiang blurted out.
(read on ao3)
Sun Xiang’s arm fucking hurt. The nasty gash the demon boar’s attack left on his arm had healed, only to be replaced by a demon mark. A curse.
Fang Minghua tsked as he poked at it. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he marveled. “Such a deep grudge. What could incite such hatred in a nature god?”
“Just cut the arm off,” Sun Xiang scoffed. Luckily, Fang Minghua was used to his callous words and dutifully ignored him.
Jiang Botao, the village’s deputy chief, was unamused. “Sun Xiang, that’s not something to joke about.”
“Chosen.”
At the sound of Zhou Zekai’s voice, everyone stilled. Zhou Zekai rarely spoke, but when he did it was on matters of great importance, and his input had never led the village astray.
Jiang Botao skillfully picked up the conversation. “Perhaps you were chosen by fate to resolve the god’s lingering resentments.” He held out the odd metal ball they’d found lodged in the great boar’s ribs. “As well as solve the mystery of this object.”
Sun Xiang could only scowl.

In the end, Sun Xiang was duty-bound to embark on a journey. Fang Minghua sniffed as the village saw him off, shoving a bundle of food and herbs into his arms.
“Remember,” Jiang Botao added to Sun Xiang’s rising ire. These elders were always so fussy. Sun Xiang would be fine—he wasn’t the village’s second strongest fighter for nothing! “Don’t get into unnecessary fights. And don’t anger any gods.”
Zhou Zekai simply said, “Good luck.”

For countless weeks, Sun Xiang journeyed, until each rolling plain and distant forest blended into an endless panorama. The pain in his arm gradually got worse and worse until one day Sun Xiang woke to find that he’d nearly tipped off his horse by falling unconscious.
But the loyal steed hadn’t shaken Sun Xiang off. Instead, it carried him to the edge of a forest.
The forest was…lively. A high concentration of spiritual energy attracted all sorts of little creatures and spirits that ran amok in the moss. Sun Xiang was no stranger to nature, but the sheer vitality of this forest shocked him into reverent silence. Could this forest have birthed the boar god turned demon?
But he did not have the luxury to ponder, for a low growl had him whirling around, only to freeze as he was met with the snarling face of a large, white wolf. Immediately, Sun Xiang reached for his battle spear, body sliding into familiar battle formations. He couldn’t—wouldn’t—die here.
But the wolf only barked out a laugh. It didn’t step down, but regarded him with a much less hungry look. “Child, you’re far from home.”
Sun Xiang puffed up at the slight. “Fight me,” he demanded, but a convenient stab of pain in his arm had him gritting his teeth.
The wolf shook its great head.  “Why? This is a peaceful forest, and you hold no malice.”
Don’t anger any gods!  Jiang Botao’s stern voice echoed in his mind. Sun Xiang scowled, stowing away his spear. “You’re a god, right? Do you know how to fix this?”
Without waiting for the wolf’s response, Sun Xiang pushed up his sleeve and shoved his arm in the wolf’s face. The mark had spread, turning the skin an ugly purple.
The wolf peered at it. “I suppose you could call me a god. But it doesn’t matter. I can’t heal you.”
“Then who can?!” Sun Xiang yelled, but the wolf was already retreating into the underbrush.

The nearest town was called Excellent Era, a rather pompous name for a simple iron town. Tao Xuan, the town’s leader, welcomed Sun Xiang and led him on a tour of the town’s metalworking factory.
The workers made all sorts of metal things, but they were most proud of their guns. When Sun Xiang pulled out the strange metal ball, their faces lit up in recognition.
Afterwards, Tao Xuan inquired after Sun Xiang’s journey.
“You came in from the forest?” Tao Xuan wore a strange expression. “Did you see anything odd?”
Sun Xiang awkwardly stepped backward as Tao Xuan leaned forward. Something in Tao Xuan’s expression made Sun Xiang feel wrong-footed.
“…No, I didn’t.”
The strange moment held for another heartbeat, then dissipated as Tao Xuan sighed. “No matter. I hope you enjoy your stay in Excellent Era.”

After a few days, Sun Xiang itched to explore the forest. The wolf god hadn’t answered his question, so he planned to track it down to ask again. Maybe he could even get a good fight out of it!
When Sun Xiang stepped across the threshold of the forest, an unfamiliar chill swept over his skin. Instinct forced Sun Xiang’s muscles to relax, and he parried the dagger thrust at him with a flick of his battle spear.
The attacker was a streak of white against a backdrop of muted greens and browns, and Sun Xiang could barely track the dagger—daggers, two—as they spun through the air.
One sliced a thin line of blood against his cheek. Sun Xiang jerked away fast enough to prevent the blade from sinking any deeper, but the attacker took advantage of his lapse in concentration to send a brutal kick across his legs, and Sun Xiang crumpled to the floor.
Part of him wanted to leap right back up again, but the other was awfully curious at the kind of person who could attack him so brazenly.
Before he could decide, Sun Xiang was forcibly pinned to the ground. For the first time, he saw his attacker clearly. A boy, no older than himself, loomed over him. Sun Xiang was first struck by his intense glare and then the wolf pelt draped over his shoulders. Red paint marked his cheeks.
“I’ll cut your throat,” the wolf boy growled. “I’ll kill you right now.” The edge of his blade pressed into his neck. Blood began to bead onto the glinting steel.
“You’re beautiful,” Sun Xiang blurted out. Normally, Sun Xiang would be furious at having lost so badly, but somehow no anger burned in his belly. There was only sheer admiration for this fiery boy. Sun Xiang had never felt like this outside of sparring with Zhou Zekai.
The wolf boy recoiled in shock, then his gaze turned to anger. The dagger in his hand trembled as if he couldn’t decide whether to stab down for real this time.
“Qiu Fei.” From the forest shadows, the great wolf stepped into the clearing. “Let him go.”
The wolf boy scowled, adopting a sullen expression as he went to stand next to the wolf. “Ye Xiu, he’s a human intruder. He stinks of those humans, and their gunpowder.”
Gunpowder? “I don’t really care about whatever’s happening in Excellent Era. I just want to get the curse on my arm healed.”
Qiu Fei’s eyes narrowed. “Excellent Era is killing the forest. You come in here and harvest our fruits and hunt our beasts, yet you disrespect the very land you take from!”
Sun Xiang was stunned into silence. “…I’m sorry,” he offered. He wasn’t sure what the relationship Excellent Era had with this forest, or to Qiu Fei, but the pain in Qiu Fei’s voice was real.
The wolf boy huffed, stalking away without a single backward glance.

Weeks passed. During the day, Sun Xiang roamed the forest. Sometimes, Qiu Fei joined him. Though they had met under tense circumstances, Sun Xiang found that Qiu Fei was a rather calm person, if fiercely protective of his home and family. He greeted the world with a steady countenance, diligently patrolling his stretch of the forest. Though he carried a hatred for the people of Excellent Era and humanity in general, he had reluctantly accepted Sun Xiang as an exception to the rule.
Qiu Fei exhausted his knowledge of herbs and poultices for Sun Xiang’s curse to no avail. Even Ye Xiu could only shake his head.
“It is a grudge,” he explained. “Most likely, it will only disappear when the caster’s grudge has been settled.”
When Sun Xiang described the demon boar that had cursed him and the metal ball that Sun Xiang had learned was a “bullet”, Ye Xiu fell into contemplative silence.
“That boar…he was a god who lived in this forest,” the wolf god said. “If he was injured and driven to madness by the humans’ weapons…I can see why he would bear so deep a grudge.”
Qiu Fei spoke up. “I told you those humans were no good.”
A sad look crossed Ye Xiu’s face, but he would say no more.
<<>>
At night, Qiu Fei would kick Sun Xiang out of the forest, citing dangerous night-spirits even when Sun Xiang protested. He would return to Excellent Era and dine with the townspeople, sometimes offering for dinner whatever he and Qiu Fei had hunted during the day.
One day, Sun Xiang entered the town to find a mob of angry townspeople gathering in a crowd.
“What’s going on?” Sun Xiang asked.
“It’s terrible!” a man said. “The dangerous half-wolf creature living in the forest attacked one of our hunters this morning. He still hasn’t woken up!”
Sun Xiang, who had been spending nearly every day with said dangerous wolf boy and seen nothing of the sort, felt that something was wrong. But before he could say anything, he was swept up in the wave of people marching toward the forest.
“Wait!” He yelled. “This isn’t right!”
But no one listened.
<<>>
A group entered the forest in advance. When Sun Xiang finally escaped the throng of people and caught up to them, he found a few villagers scattered across a clearing, groaning in pain. In the middle, Tao Xuan was furiously yelling at Ye Xiu, the gun in his hands pointed straight at the wolf.
Tao Xuan snarled. “Ye Xiu! Once again, you interfere. We had a deal. The riches of the forest would be mine!”
The wolf god, white fur matted with blood, stared. Little warmth was left in his golden eyes.
“We did have a deal,” he tiredly agreed. “Until you broke it, and began to take from the forest what you could not repay.”
Tao Xuan spat at his feet. “What is there to repay?! This is Excellent Era’s land now! Not even that boar god could stand against me, what makes you think you can?”
Ye Xiu’s answer was drowned out by an enraged howl. From the shadows, Qiu Fei burst forth, swinging his daggers with vengeance. There was already blood splattered across his neck and a cut soaking the sleeve of his shirt, but Qiu Fei moved like the wind.
Gunfire exploded as Qiu Fei slashed. Another shot grazed his leg, and Qiu Fei stumbled.
“Watch out!”
As Tao Xuan aimed directly at Qiu Fei’s back, Sun Xiang swung his spear and knocked the gun away. Tao Xuan yelled something unintelligible, but Sun Xiang only saw the blood on Qiu Fei’s body, and struck.
At the same time, a dagger whistled through the air. It joined his spear as both met their mark in Tao Xuan’s body.
While Tao Xuan lay bleeding out on the ground, the demon mark on Sun Xiang’s arm fizzled and began to fade. Soon, it was gone, leaving a clean expanse of unmarred skin.
Sun Xiang felt bad for killing Tao Xuan, but Qiu Fei held no such reservations.
“He hurt Ye Xiu,” he said, limping over to inspect the body. “And he hurt you too!”
Tao Xuan’s death caused the rest of the villagers to scatter in fear, and soon Sun Xiang and Qiu Fei were the only ones left standing in the silent forest.
Qiu Fei shifted. “You should leave. They’ll probably come back with more guns.”
But Sun Xiang could not bear the thought of leaving. “Whatever happens next, we’ll face it together,” he promised. “Even if it’s against the whole world.”
Behind them, Ye Xiu huffed in laughter. Together, they walked into the forest depths.

“you know,” fang rui says, “i don’t think people realize just how shameless you are.”
su mucheng, in the middle of analyzing a VOD of their next opponent, smiled. it was a different smile from the ones she gave as interviews and press conferences. it was a little more hungry than the sweet smiles she slipped into during photoshoots and advertisements.
a rather smug look flickered in su mucheng's eyes. "I did learn from the best, after all."
