“I’m a singlet and don’t know how to behave around system friend!”: the unofficial guide (stuff systems want you to know)
(This post is a continuation of my DID/OSDD infopost for singlets, find it here. There is more in-depth information about the disorder itself over there)
asking endos + endo supporters to NOT reblog/interact
scroll down for the TL;DR
If someone came out to you as a system, that means they’ve trusted you with sensitive information. Respect their privacy, don't share the fact that you know a system without the system's consent. Even if you aren't friends with them anymore or had a falling out, outing someone as a system will bring more harm than good and can be extremely traumatic for the system in question.
If a system switches unexpectedly, please be gentle. Systems, especially those with amnesia, can sometimes switch with no memory of what was going on before the switch. If an alter asks what is going on, don't be rude and explain the situation to them. However, not all systems switch with amnesia.
Systems do not owe you their information. If they don't want to tell you who's fronting, they're entirely in their right not to. Don't pressure them into doing so.
Even though alters exist in the same body and are parts of a single, unformed person, you should still respect their identities and wishes. If an alters asks you to stop doing something, don't say "Well, [x] alter is okay with it!".
The host of a system isn't the only or most important alter. All alters are equally as important, it doesn't matter how much they front or how long you've known them.
Alters are entitled to their own opinions, don't try to force a switch if you don't like the alter that is currently fronting or if they don't like you.
It's okay to ask questions, but a system is not forced to answer them. Don't ask too intrusive questions, and don't ask a system about their trauma unless they gave you the go-ahead.
Just because someone is a system doesn't mean you can't call them out on problematic/abusive behaviour.
If a system, or anyone in general, has told you their triggers (both positive and negative) and/or has asked you to stop doing something because it is triggering, please oblige. Triggers are serious things that should be treated with care.
There is no 'original'. There is, however, a first host. Read this post if you'd like to know more.
Don't try to relate with system-specific experiences unless you're a questioning system yourself. DID/OSDD aren't 'alter disorders'. There is so much more that goes into them.
Not all kid/animal/agere alters want to be babied/infantilized. Don't treat them as such if they don't want you to.
OSDD-1b systems can still experience emotional amnesia, amnesia of traumatic events and grey-outs. They aren't "no amnesia at all" systems.
OSDD-1a systems are still systems if the person with OSDD-1a considers them to be so, no matter how similar their alters may seem.
If someone that claims to be an "endogenic system" tries to explain something to you, please do not take their information to a literal degree and instead ask a DID/OSDD system about it. Endogenic systems are not always terrible people, but a lot of them are notorious for spreading misinformation and claiming you can have alters without having trauma, which is not possible.
INTROJECTS ARE NOT THEIR SOURCES
TL;DR:
systems do not owe you their information. Ask alters about their individual boundaries. If you are unsure about the correct terms to use, do research or ask a system about it. You can ask systems questions, but they are not forced to answer every single one of them. Don't assume a system's trauma or why they split. Respect every alter and treat them as their own person with their own identity. Never out someone as a system.
