three thoughts about raven reyes (& 1 thought about Murven endgame)

ONE

I loved Raven Reyes from the millisecond she showed up on screen. I started watching from the very first episode of t100 but I got truly invested once she showed up and that has never changed. She’s so complicated but at the same time her motivations are simple to figure out if you consider her past and what it was like for her to grow up on the Ark. This might get me some shade but I don’t think a lot of fandom understands Raven at all, and that makes me sad (and also angry lbr). She’s one of the most forgiving characters on this show, she wears her heart on her sleeve and you never have to guess where you stand with her. Raven can be tremendously kind and understanding but she can also tear you down and make you feel small if she disagrees with your choices. I happen to think this is one of her strengths. She deserves so much happiness even though she thinks she doesn’t. It’s not even remotely a stretch to say that she may very well be my favorite character of all time. -JENN

A beautiful, iconic genius. I love how from her introduction, there’s no problem she can’t handle or won’t approach. She’s Raven Reyes and she’s a badass with an amazing mind. Yes, she faces challenges, as all these characters face, but she has such a tenacity when it comes to approaching them which I really love. I think it’s been so great to see this character, played by such a great actress, during the years of t100. -RYN

i find she’s often overlooked for how much representation she brings to the show. she’s not necessarily underrated, but just not appreciated enough for how much she can mean to people. raven reyes is a woman in stem, a woman of colour, and a woman with a disability. on top of that, she is so kickass and kind and funny and beautiful and strong - she isn’t reduced to tokenism, she is an integral part of the show. i love raven reyes and lindsey morgan for the comfort and inspiration they give so many people. -ELLE

TWO

Her strength is something that I think is both one of the most powerful and interesting parts of her character. Her season four arc really broke my heart, in the best way since I love pain, but I absolutely loved that she chose to live. That she fought back against every odd and said “screw that” and powered on. She does struggle, yes, she feels pain and experiences loss and everything else that all the characters face, which I think is important, to show that she isn’t unbreakable. She also confronts those struggles by continuing forward though, and doing what she can for herself and her people. -RYN

despite what canon says, i think that she has always been morally gray in her actions. she took extreme actions against grounders in season one. she wanted to turn murphy over to the grounders in season two. she was pretty complacent in the nightblood experiments in season four. she helped with the flame in season five. in season seven, she wants murphy and emori to keep up the prime act. she’s complex and contradictory and realistic and human. -ELLE

For Raven, family is everything and once she counts you as hers, she’s not letting go without a fight. She felt this way about Finn, which I hated at first, but I have come to appreciate their relationship more and respect her feelings for him as her family even after what he did. She’s willing to do anything for her family, including stay behind alone in space, facing likely death like when it meant getting Spacekru back to Earth safely. We see the devastation she takes on when she loses family and how it haunts her and also influences her actions. This outlook is still going strong in s7 when she fights to bring Echo back to herself and throws being a family in Bellamy’s face when she feels that he has betrayed them. I don’t think anything motivates Raven more than family. -JENN

THREE

Thinking about regrets I’ll have that we likely won’t see for Raven, I think it’s particularly traumatic that Finn, Sinclair and Abby all died right in front of her while she could do absolutely nothing about it. All three were her family and I think the helplessness & guilt that she felt regarding their deaths (and to an extent Monty & Harper too, based on what she says after learning of their deaths) really plays a big role on who she has become over the seasons. I wish canon took a deeper look into that but I do think Lindsey does a particularly good job at showing devastated emotions (sob) so at least I got that. I am truly turning myself into a pretzel to cross my entire body that Raven gets her happy ending, but I will add the caveat that it better make sense for her & not be some bs last-minute move that ruins her character either. -JENN

We love color symbolism!! I love Raven’s red jacket and the repeated red symbolism we get for her. Not just because, of course, it ties with Murphy’s symbolism as well (I see you red jacket patch, I see you), but also because I think it shows her character so well. I enjoyed it so much when they brought the jacket, or one like it, back this season, and think it shows how all the character arcs, but specifically hers, are circling back and connecting them to who they were in season one to who they are now. Hopefully, this circling will include satisfying conclusions for her and the others. -RYN

raven reyes is the only one who should be allowed to call murphy a cockroach. with anyone else, it bothers me, but with (the) raven, it’s fine. i think that’s just because of the development they’ve have. it was a title born out of hatred, but it has since evolved into an inside joke for the pair, and it’s even a bit of a mantra. i know a lot of people disliked the “go be a cockroach” line in season seven, but to me i think it was her way of saying (in a high stress situation) “i need you to survive, like you always do” á la season four’s “go. survive” and “that’s what cockroaches do, right?” lines. every cockroach needs a raven. -ELLE

what’s your ideal ending for Murven?

I feel like there’s two viewpoints I’m torn between - what I want to happen vs. what’s appropriate for the story. IMHO the ending for them that’s appropriate for the story is that they die together. It’s a huge part of their dynamic that canon has set up since early s2. If the show does it well, showing that Raven & Murphy actively choose not to leave each other or it’s a scenario where it’s inevitable and they sort of peacefully accept it and perhaps do something heroic at the end, then as sad as I’d be, I’d also probably love it and would completely accept it. And then I’d write reincarnation fic or something, LOL! But what I want to happen - oh well, in that case - I’d like them both to survive and have maybe a hint or two that the option of them being together is there. Personally I don’t need them to be romantic canon in the end if we can at least leave the ending up to interpretation but I would sell my soul for them to kiss onscreen at least once. I don’t care how or why just let me have it!! -jenn

a quiet life in sanctum. i think after all the danger and pain they’ve experienced, they deserve a nice peaceful life. my ideal would be them being together, living in a cute little cottage style house. raven would take over the machine shop, getting to tinker around all day. murphy would work at the bar/kitchen, getting to chat and joke around with people all day. they would come home and talk about their days or hang out with their friends, never without some playful teasing, and then they would fall asleep together - peaceful and happy. -elle

Okay, this is more than simply just sad, but my ideal goal is a final, important moment between them. I have been theorizing and predicting a possible Murphy death since really the season started, and I’m scared to admit I feel like it is heading there. So, while I think it’s gonna break my damn heart, I want Murphy to have a true hero’s death (if he does have to die which I am not down with or excited about but what I feel is indeed coming) and a final important moment with Raven, who I feel with pretty intense certainty will live and (hopefully) lead a very full and happy life. It’s not a perfect ending, or the ending I would’ve written for them, but this is where my ideal meets my acknowledgement of canon meets haha. -ryn

three thoughts about john murphy (& 1 thought about folklore)

ONE

John Murphy… where to start?! I didn’t like him exactly, but I was intrigued by him from early on. His motivations fluctuated and he was hard to pin down initially, but I found him much more interesting than the other male characters so I guess that’s how it started for me. Canon tries to sell Murphy as selfish or uncaring or primarily out for himself, but only in very early s1 do I ever buy this about him. He was making efforts to be helpful & doing good deeds ages ago, so I actually find it pretty frustrating that both canon & some of fandom are now suddenly on the “we’re so proud” of Murphy train. He has matured into a better person, yes, but the seed of that was clearly visible in s1 and it’s one of the reasons I love Murphy because for me at least, the glimpses of who he really was when he let his guard down have always pulled me right in. -JENN

One of the best arcs on the show. Murphy’s grown and changed so much over the course of the show, while also staying true to himself. I think it’s been interesting to him progress, but just as fascinating to see where he stays the same or even regresses at times. I think Murphy really encompasses how good people can be bad sometimes, but learn and overcome and, ultimately, live. -RYN

he is far more fair and pragmatic than people give him credit for. i think a lot of it is him feeling the effects of being expendable. i also don’t believe this is a new development - he wanted to help finn in season two, he helped bellamy in season three, he stole medicine in season four, he stayed behind for raven in season five, he didn’t want to start a war in season six. he’s not a hero or a villain, he’s just a typical complex human. -ELLE

TWO

I’m a big fan of Murphy’s sense of humor, his ability to read people & situations, and how he’s really not much of a grudge holder, all things considered. He doesn’t get enough credit for that. I don’t view him as comic relief for the show though - to me Murphy’s arcs over the seasons have often been deeper and more complex than they first appear to be, and I don’t know that other characters would have come out of them as intact as Murphy has. He doesn’t get enough credit for that either. Yes, he’s a survivor but he’s also had to develop an incredibly thick skin to deal with the things he has been through. So basically what I’m saying is that Murphy deserves the world! -JENN

Morality. I think Murphy perfectly demonstrates the morality of t100. How it changes, ebbs and flows. How it can adapt and become better, but also lose hope and go to extremes when under pressures to survive. Then, even amongst the darkest times, there’s always the lingering feeling of hope and light. -RYN

john murphy (thanks to richard harmon) elevates every storyline and character he’s involved with. i know i’m biased, but i feel he is criminally underused. he’s often used in the b or even c plots, but he shines so much when he’s with the rest of the mains. part of the reason i love murven so much is that i find murphy and raven so natural and electric together. they have such an easygoing banter, and their development is second to none. i feel like the characters (and actors) can bounce off one another like no other pair. -ELLE

THREE

he is more than just comedic relief or the resident “cockroach” (while i’m here: i viciously hate the cockroach joke as well as the “shut up murphy” shtick). i think a lot of people tend to overlook him, but he is actually such an interesting and compelling character in terms of mental health. i definitely feel like in the modern world, he would be diagnosed with something. that’s why so many of his fans relate to him and see something that maybe a lot of viewers wouldn’t. he’s smart and loyal and kind - but like anyone, has inner struggles. -ELLE

Dad!Murphy rights. This has been living in my mind for a while now, and I am even part of the dad!murphy enthusiasts founded by the amazing @queenemori. We all are passionate about Murphy being a dad, and regardless of our ship of choice, love to talk about it and come up with headcanons and fic that includes the dynamic. -RYN

Now that we’re so close to the end, I do regret that canon likely won’t delve more into Murphy’s ties to Abby (before and after her death) and how he connects her to his own parents. Also his isolation/PTSD in s5 & his reliance on drinking in s6/s7 are pieces I think we’re missing out on too. I think these aspects of who Murphy has grown to be are important to his character, his past and his future. I’m glad that fic writers who love Murphy will tackle topics like these though, because they are stories that deserve to be told. -JENN

what’s your favorite song from folklore?

Probably betty, though I really love august and cardigan as well! There’s just something about betty that really gets me in my feels and it’s such a poignant song. It’s been on repeat for me for a while and I don’t see that changing soon. -ryn

other than all of them? right this minute it’s maybe ‘invisible string’. though again, it’s really all of them. -elle

it’s a multi-part interview with multiple people! they all write about Murven and they’re all available for prompts via @bellarkefic-for-blm. it is my pleasure to re-introduce elle (@hopskipaway), jenn (@easilydistractedbyfanfic) and ryn ( @animmortalist). it’s also a bit of a follow-up interview since i’ve already interviewed everyone, jenn and elle before they signed up for @t100fic-for-blm! our first part is a collection of icebreaker questions to warm you all up before we get into the heart of the interview.

why did you decide to start writing for @t100fic-for-blm?

I have been involved with politics for a long time and social, racial and economic justice issues are very important to me. I believe the systemic problems we have in this country require true revolution in order to force change, and right now it’s more difficult for me to get out out into the world and speak my mind and march and protest because I have young children, so when I saw the BLM Initiative happening in the t100 fandom and that I could participate by writing for my fave characters, I jumped at the chance. Huge thanks to everyone submitting prompts & donations and of course to @burninghoneyatdusk for organizing the whole thing! -jenn

I really wanted to make a change to my everyday life that helped people, and specifically, helped blm. I saw it on the dash and knew it was something I wanted to do, and was passionate about. It’s so amazing how many people have joined. All who write different ships and love different characters, but have the same goal of helping the movement and doing what they can. -ryn

i heard about this initiative through jenn! i was having a lot of fun even just following it (and requesting some fics) so i decided to join in. i’ve been in a bit of a writer’s block, so i thought this would be a good way to get out of that - as well as support a great cause! -elle

two sentences of your WIP:

i actually don’t have anything written yet as i joined the initiative not too long ago; but i do have a couple wips in the planning stages! be on the lookout for some anomaly fun and post-apocalyptic (a different apocalypse) drama! -elle

“She didn't know how long they kissed, or how much Murphy saw, and she told herself she didn't care. The only bad part was that her eyes were closed, and she couldn't see what it did to them.” -ryn

“Murphy’s not one to pass up eavesdropping, not when it’s so convenient anyway, and especially not when there’s a serious lack of entertainment during the long days in space. There’s no one else in the corridor, so he crouches down like he’s fixing the lace on his boot and tilts his ear towards the door so he can pick up on the latest.” -jenn

JENN-- I don’t know @animmortalist very well but I’m intrigued with a new story she’s writing and I’m looking forward to checking it out! It’s got Clarke & Raven as single mom best friends who get knocked up by Bellamy & Murphy respectively, and of course I can’t resist the Raven/Murphy pairing, so count me in!

I started chatting with @hopskipaway a while back due to our shared love of Murven and I really appreciate that we have some similar takes on these characters, the show and the overall fandom. She’s got a great sense of humor about it all and puts up with my ranting. And she has some great ideas about Murven stories that we all have to nag her to write so we can read them, and if we’re lucky she’ll make moodboards for them too!

ELLE-- this is the best question, because they are two of my favourites. for jenn, she’s one of the main reasons i’m as into murven as i am. their writing is so amazing, and you can tell she really knows the characters so well. each story is so artfully planned out and so very thoughtful. even beyond writing, jenn has become one of my favourite fandom pals, i love each and every one of our conversations and interactions - they’re the best!! ryn is someone i’ve admired from afar for a while now. myself and one of my clurphy loving friends bonded over “rock bottom” and whenever i see a new story from her i’m so excited! i’d go as far to say she’s the blueprint for modern aus - they’re always so fun and interesting. her attention to detail with all her moodboards and playlists is just amazing. both of these lovely writers inspire me so much, please go out and give them so much love - they deserve it.

RYN-- Jenn: Is so freaking talented and has written so many wonderful murven stories. I’m also so amazingly appreciative of the positivity and kindness which I’ve seen across the dash and discord.

Elle: One of the kindest people oml. I have so much love for Elle, and am so grateful to her for being a truly fantastic reader. One of my all-time favorite asks is from her. Just a wonderful presence in the fandom for whom we should all be grateful.

This initiative is an opportunity the t100 fanfiction community to directly support the Black Lives Matter cause through reading and writing fanfiction. For every prompt a participating writer or content creator receives, we ask that you donate to an organization that supports the BLM cause. Please refer to the carrd for more information.

HOW DO I SUBMIT A FANFICTION PROMPT?

Choose the writer you’d like to write your prompt from our list of writers on the writers page. Writers are organized by the primary ship they write for, but refer to their profile to view their trope preferences, what ratings they are willing to write, and other ships they are willing to write for.

Either send an ask or DM to the writer requesting your prompt. Try to be as specific as possible in regards to what you’re looking for, especially regarding what rating you prefer. Unless stated otherwise in the author profile, you may request a WIP update in lieu of a new prompt.

If you would like your prompt to remain anonymous from the writer, you may submit the prompt via DM to @t100fic-for-blm. Your prompt will be anonymously provided to the writer of your choice.

Similarly, if you do not have a writer preference, you may submit your request to @t100fic-for-blm and the prompt will be distributed to a writer interested in the prompt.

Submit your donation confirmation via DM to @t100fic-for-blm. Generally, this is a screenshot of a receipt that lists the donation amount and the organization donated to. Please black out all personal information on the receipt.

Reblog shit!

I don’t intend this to sound as bitchy as it probably will but...on a site like tumblr, likes really mean nothing. Likes are fine for maybe acknowledging a published ask or bookmarking a post you want to go back to later, but if it’s ANY kind of content then it should be reblogged.

Fanfic, moodboards, gif sets - basically any creation, any form of art, you liking that is useless. It means the person’s work is reaching less people because that’s how a platform like tumblr is designed - the only way content reaches people is through sharing. It’s not like twitter - nobody’s post will pop up on someone’s feed just because you liked it. If you want to support people who create stuff for free on this site, then reblog it.

Hell - even a funny text post. Did it make you laugh? Well think of the others it could make laugh if you actually shared it. And some people are like “well I don’t have a lot of followers it doesn’t matter” - if you have literally more than 0 followers, then it matters.

Anyways, thx for coming to my TED talk.

August 21st is Fanfic Writer’s Appreciation Day 💕

Let’s be honest - we all forget to leave a comment sometimes. We don’t always go out of our way to click the “come talk to me on tumblr” link on AO3 to scream about the fic in the author’s inbox. On August 21st I encourage you to take a moment and show fanfic writers that you appreciate them!

How can you do it?

leave a comment and kudos on every fic you finish reading. Doesn’t matter how short. Doesn’t matter if you’re just repeating what other people have already said. Just be kind! Keysmashing, Caps Lock, and live commenting appreciated! (Bonus points if you leave a comment on every chapter)

ideas for what to put in a comment: one | two

floaty review box for ao3 (super useful for commenting as you read + it has a ‘review tips’ button if you feel stuck)

reblog ficlets, drabbles, fics, fic rec posts, etc. Put a nice comment in the tags. Remember that likes, while appreciated, don’t give the writer any exposure, meaning the posts don’t reach more people

go to your local fanfic writer’s inbox and talk to them about their fic of your choice. Let them know how long ago you’ve read it and what story point/sentence/scene still makes you smile when you think about it

send thank you messages to fic writers. In a world where you have to pay for almost everything, they’re supplying you with countless hours of free entertainment. It can get quite lonely without getting messages acknowledging the hours they spend writing stories - let them know their time and effort is appreciated

make fic rec posts and @ the authors whose fics you’re recommending! (believe me, fic writers love to see their stories in these posts)

create something inspired by a fic! You can draw fanart, make a moodboard or aesthetic post, or even write a song for the fic you love. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro doesn’t matter - the thought alone is what counts more than anything <3

buy the writer a coffee if they have a ko-fi page and you have some change lying around c: Caffeine keeps most fic writers awake when they struggle with a particularly slow draft or a difficult scene. More coffee, more content.

These are only some ideas out of the sea of possible ways to appreciate fanfic writers. On August 21st show the writers in your fandom(s) some love <3

I saw this post by @astropixie about how it’d be nice to review fics on AO3 as you read. A little while back, because I was so in awe of the Clexa fic writers, I made this userscript (can install on Firefox by using Greasemonkey and on Chrome and Opera by using Tampermonkey) so that I could do just that. It doesn’t have the wattpad or soundcloud functionality, it’s just a little thing added on to a page, not something supported by the site itself, but it’s better than nothing.

Bellarke Writers for BLM Sprint Campaign

Hellooooo folks! This is a very exciting day bc Bellamy Blake has once again graced our screens and we are EXCITED and NERVOUS and SO MANY THINGS.

But while our excitement for that sweet bellarke angst is on the rise, attention towards the BLM movement has begun slipping through the cracks in the media and on our timelines. When I started this initiative, I was particularly struck by a member of our fandom pointing out that she didn’t expect the enthusiasm for the BLM movement to last in the fandom, past the attention the media was giving it. I want to make sure that doesn’t happen and we stay engaged. This is not a trend, this is not a temporary event. This is a societal problem affecting so many of us and it is all of our responsibilities to step it up and do our part by doing what we can.

That being said, the group has come together and decided to set a $2k goal for this initiative, to be fulfilled by the 100 series finale.

So far, we’ ve collectively raised $1630 and I KNOW this is a goal we can meet together. Reblogging and liking this post is not enough. I’ve seen the power of this fandom in voting our cast into top spots in online awards - if we approach this initiative with half the enthusiasm we do for those campaigns, we can easily meet this together.

Hi! What are you reading right now and what fics do you recommend? What has been your favorite thing about creating the Bellarkefics 4 BLM? We really appreciate everything you’re doing for the cause!

Aw thanks that’s really sweet! 💙 Although it is absolutely a group effort between all our writers, content creators, and readers donating...my type A personality is simply yelling at people to submit prompts and tracking $$$ 😂 And to answer what my fav part is - that’s it. It’s really awesome that people care about this and the group of us that came together to write and create are awesome (and on that note, all writers & content creators are welcome to join!).

I’m really only reading and writing fic right now. I am rereading Tiny, Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed. She’s the author of Wild and this is a book collection of responses for an anon advice column she used to write for called Dear, Sugar. I encourage anyone wadding through their 20s (and really anyone in general!) to read this - it’s full of beautiful advice and stories, makes you think about life and appreciate things. I think it’s especially poignant given the state of our world right now. If you’re not going to read it, honestly at least read the quotes on goodreads - here are 5 of my favs:

Most things will be okay eventually, but not everything will be. Sometimes you'll put up a good fight and lose. Sometimes you'll hold on really hard and realize there is no choice but to let go. Acceptance is a small, quiet room.

I'll never know, and neither will you, of the life you don't choose. We'll only know that whatever that sister life was, it was important and beautiful and not ours. It was the ghost ship that didn't carry us. There's nothing to do but salute it from the shore.

I Found Peace In Your Violence by @eyessharpweaponshot . I could sit here and gush about Jen’s fics all day but I haven’t been this into a fic in a while. It’s just getting started but I get SO excited for updates - the premise is so cool/unique and the bellarke dynamic is already 👌🏻👌🏻

sometimes (this has a hot, sweet taste) by @selflessbellamy . This fic is somehow both so soft and hot at the same time - such an emotionally nuanced FWB fic I can’t get enough of.

Intertwining your soul (with somebody else) by @changingthefairy-tale . Madison and I enjoy inflicting each other w pain and angst and god does she follow through. This premise is so good and I haven’t read one like it - canonverse AU, Heda!Bellamy childhood friends with Clarke and betrothed to SOMEONE ELSE. The angst and chemistry is delicious and I want to cry, but I’m enjoying the tears.

Say you’ll remember me by @nakey-cats-take-bathsss . Leah indulged me when I shouted into the void that I wanted a song fic to t swift’s ‘wildest dreams’ and damn she did not disappoint.

it’s a small world by virgohotspot. If you can’t tell from ABOY, unplanned pregnancy is one of my fav tropes and damn does this deliver. It’s exes to lovers and Clarke gets pregnant from a one night stand with Bellamy 10 years after they broke up. This fic is beautiful and I love that it gets into the real issue of balancing work and family, and the angst is wonderful.

Surely You Must Know (it was all for you) by @elora-lane . I know A/B/O fics aren’t everyone’s thing, but this fic is beautiful and I adore it. It’s 18th century/pride & prejudice vibes A/B/O fic which I’ve never seen done and she does an incredible job with it. On the note of A/B/O, Good was updated after a year - this was the first A/B/O fic I read that got me hooked after I was afraid of the trope for a long time...do with that what you will.

A Twist of Fate by @queenemori . This was one of the best soulmate fics I’ve read and so soft and wonderful - highlight was a clurphy brotp. They host a podcast together and it’s the most adorable.

brokenness is a form of art by @animmortalist . A canon-divergent bellarke/murven fic that explores what would have happened if at the end of S4, Bellamy stayed behind on Earth with Clarke and Raven had to step up to lead Spacekru. The fic is awesome and damn if I don’t kind of wish this was canon...

Red Sky At Night by @excuseyouclarke . I requested this prompt (by @broashwhat ) for @bellarkefic-for-blm and omg she did not disappoint. I’m halfway through but let’s just say I never knew how badly I needed pirate captain!clarke until now and she writes it so beautifully.

an interview with @animmortalist (she/her)

what are you working on right now? I am currently working on a couple different projects. It's a little chaotic, but it works for me. I think right now I have six or so multichapter wips I'm working on and off on. I like having a lot of different things happening at once—it keeps me from getting blocked or losing interest in a story. I tend to overextend myself, but usually, it does work for me pretty well. I like entering different mindsets for different stories. I think it keeps my writing fresh and keeps me from getting into a headspace where I'm doing this for the sake of doing it. Plus, I just get excited about sharing my work, and I’ve learned to override the doubt and need for perfection.

Right now though, my main projects are a rewrite of an earlier fic, Rock Bottom, a fake-dating celebrity au called the worst thing you ever heard, a kid fic!au featuring bellarke and murven, Send Me on My Way, and my canon-divergent fic, brokenness is a form of art.

what’s something you’d like to write one day? I have a whole outline and idea for an alien apocalypse au. It would definitely be a journey and something I'd want to really sink my teeth into and spend a lot of time on. It involves some motifs to the show, more than I have in most of my other works since they're usually modern aus. I think it would be an interesting challenge for me, and hopefully, an entertaining story for readers. It's a long piece though, and right now, I gotta focus on the projects I have out in the world. I sometimes really have to control myself from working on this one though because it is one that's always in the back of my mind. Just waiting for me to finally find the time and get it together enough to write.

what is the fanwork you’re most proud of? Probably Rock Bottom. It was the first fic I ever wrote and put out into the world, let alone my first fic for the fandom. It's an idea that refused to leave me alone, even before I got involved in the fandom on tumblr. I put a lot of myself into writing it, and I realize now it was such an ambitious project to take on for my first work. But I am really proud of myself for finishing it. Now, I'm editing the whole piece and reposting it, and that has been a really rewarding experience as well. This time, I am much more confident about my writing and what I'm doing plot-wise, so it's easier and more fun.

why did you first start writing fic? Basically, I had the idea for Rock Bottom and it just wouldn't leave my head and I started thinking about it more and more until I sat down and wrote it all at once. I didn't know even how to go about it or how to get an ao3 account when I put out the first chapter! I just put it out on my tumblr and was so shocked when people liked it. Fic hasn't always been something I loved in its entirety (because of my own challenges with it, not anyone else) but the reason I keep coming back is it gives me such a strong community and it feels good to be a part of something. More than that though, I just really love providing any kind of joy in this garbage world.

what frustrates you most about fic writing? Probably my own mental space and where I struggle with acceptance of my work and believing in myself. Months ago, I think in April/May I had a whole crisis about it. Basically, I quit fic. Shut down the ao3 account. Completely peaced out. But then I sat with it for like two and a half weeks and realized I wanted to come back. That I really did love writing fic and my community and the stories I still wanted to tell. I think I struggle with differentiating my fic from my original writing. I feel a lot more pressure with my original stuff, and there’s also the lack of continuous feedback that you can get with fic. I’ve come to learn that they're different things, and they have different kinds of meanings and importance. I think I have a much better understanding of why I write fic now that I've come back to it.

what are your top five songs right now? 1. Chinese Satellite: Phoebe Bridgers

I really, really love the quiet tension and melancholy Phoebe Bridgers captures in her music. It never fails to amaze me or make me feel All the Things.

2. Betty-Taylor Swift

This one really took me by surprise. Really, the whole album did. But this track especially. It's a departure and yet makes perfect sense for Swift's career, if that makes sense. But this song just hits me right in the chest.

3. Pink Lite-Sir Babygirl

This is such a fun, light-hearted song. It makes me wanna dance. It reminds me of parties I went to when I was in college, which I just graduated from this spring. It's a nostalgic song and yet also something I find new things in as well.

4. Silos-Cautious Clay

This one is a big inspiration for one of my newer fics, brokenness is a form of art. It's got the perfect sound and feel to it that I want to capture for the story.

5. Living Proof-Gregory Alan Isakov

This one reminds me of those days in college where I felt so separate from a lot of people, even as I was surrounded by them. It's a hopeful song and yet a sad song. I think that's really special when music can do that.

what are your inspirations? I get really inspired by music and books. Sometimes, I put small references to some of my favorite books in my fic, and even if I'm the only one who knows they're there, it's still fun. Whenever someone finds them or even finds connections I didn't think of, I really love it. Music is the absolute driving force with me and writing though. For every big project I have a playlist that I curate with a lot of care. Each song represents a feeling a character goes through or a moment in the story or something else like that. I love music so much and I usually get the name of my stories and chapter titles from different songs that are on those project's playlist. I could talk about music all day, honestly, and the way it's helped me in innumerable ways.

what first attracted you to Bellarke? what attracts you now? This is a tough one for me because I really can't recall what made me first ship them or fall for them, even. Now, it feels like it's always been there. Regardless, I love the trust there, the dedication. But it's balanced, in my opinion. They wouldn't do absolutely anything for the other, and I kind of like that? Not to say that they wouldn't do reckless things, because they kind of have, sometimes, but that they understand the other enough to do what would make them proud. I really enjoy relationships where there's a team leader aspect, and I guess that's what initially drew me to them, when I think about it more. This might not make a whole lot of sense, which I apologize for, but really, there are many reasons why I love them and got this deep, most of which I can’t really articulate too well.

BESIDES Bellarke, what character or pairing do you like best on t100? Probably murven and clurphy? Mostly because I really enjoy how murven shouldn't really get along, but somehow, there's such a strong chemistry there and potential that I like to play with. I think I feel similarly to clurphy, there's a lot for me to unpack as a writer. I love when I have the opportunity to explore something different or even unexpected, and there’s such a fun quality to both of those pairings.

But really, I love writing about all characters and relationships from the show. I recently started exploring murphamy more, and have such a newfound love for it. I’m a Murphy fan, and I think writing from his point of view is fun and exciting and always gives me something new to think about.

Luckily, perhaps, I feel I have the freedom to explore all kinds of dynamics and characters with my fic. There's so many new opportunities to put characters together and see how they change and grow because of those relationships, whether they're platonic or romantic.

why did you decide to start writing for bellarkefic-for-blm? I saw the initiative and immediately wanted to join. I held off for a day or so because I already had a decent amount of projects going on, but then I realized that this was something I could do to help, and that mattered more. I've enjoyed the experience so much so far, and I am beyond honored to be a part of it. I just really want to help make a difference and assist the movement in my everyday life, and this is something I can do given my limited resources with everything that's currently happening.

what’s your writing process like? It's really detailed at times and then others a total mess. I have a very specific outlining process that involves some bullet journaling, my Notion notes (which, seriously, if you don't have Notion you need to get it's amazing), and some color-coding. I used to do a lot more, but found myself doing more outlining instead of actually writing, so I've streamlined it a bit.

Once I get to the writing stage, though, I tend to let go and not restrain myself too much. I like to do what feels right in the moment, and know that if it doesn't work, I can go back and edit it later. If I need to change parts of the outline or go off in a different direction, I do. I use my gut a lot, which maybe isn't the most technical choice, but it helps me continue to enjoy the experience of writing.

what are some things you’d like to recommend? So, I really recommend checking out a great writer's new fic, There's a Serpent Lying Deep Down in These Still Waters by @shaeheda. It's just the first part so far, but the world building is great and I'm really excited to see where the story goes. Also, I know the writer, and am totally biased, but there's such an intricacy and care in this story. And everyone's gotta read the book Dare Me by Megan Abbott. It's fantastic and intense and I finished it like a week ago and can't stop thinking about it. As for music, check out Diet Cig's latest album Do You Wonder About Me? It's been one of my recurring listens since it came out.

what are you working on right now? I'm working on both my Bellarke fic for BLM and a personal fantasy story that I've written and rewritten from the beginning to about 5000000 times because my ideas keep changing. My Bellarke fic is a modern day COVID AU that is also the longest I've ever done so it's been taking a minute to finish! :)

what’s something you’d like to write one day? A YA either historical fiction or realistic fiction LGBTQ+ romance. I have a ton of ideas for plots, but I haven’t quite gotten the chance to sit down and try to plot them out. For historical fiction, I’m very interested in the 1900-1950s era, especially the Roaring 20s and WWI/II so I’d most likely set it there! I’m all in for the angsty romance, but I'd definitely want to end it on a happy note (unlike my current fantasy work) and I’m really looking forward to getting the chance to write a character driven story that doesn’t focus so much on heavy plot elements - something I can’t do as much in a fantasy setting!

what is the fanwork you’re most proud of? This one is actually pretty hard considering how my writing style has developed since I started writing fanfics. But if I had to choose, I’d probably say my FirstPrince (Alex/Henry from Red, White, and Royal Blue) fic on Ao3 called To Love Another Is to Cherish Life Itself. The title is a bit dramatic but basically it is an angsty/fluffy one-shot that I wrote really late one night and did minimal edits to before posting. It definitely feels like the most in character and honest fic I’ve ever done, and it broke my heart to write about some of the darker stuff, but in the end I’m pretty proud of it!

why did you first start writing fic? Well, I’ve been writing fanfics since I was probably 10 or 11 years old (I had PJO phase that spanned close to a decade and I’m still not totally over it 😂) but I started publishing work on Wattpad literally the night I turned 13. That was actually my first Bellarke/the 100 fic! It started out as my predictions for season 5 and then evolved into a fix-it fic for everything I didn’t like about the season. I’ve abandoned it for almost two years, but I’m slowly coming back to it so...slow updates y’all :)

what frustrates you most about fic writing? Everything! Just kidding - I love fic writing! But if I had to choose, probably two main things tho. 1) Creating a plot for a long term fic - I’m sooooo bad at it because I always feel like I’m writing too much in line with the actual show/book/movie and it feels like copying. 2) Making sure that I stay honest to the character I’m writing about. I have a huge tendency to write my fics (ESPECIALLY my one-shots) from the POV of the character who was not the main character in the original thing (like my POV for my RWRB fic is Henry, the love interest of Alex/other main character). This means that the only look inside their head that we’ve gotten has been through the eyes of the main character - which can obviously be biased. I try to stay as honest as I can to my interpretation of the character drawn directly from the text - but sometimes that means that I can’t include scenes that I want to because it feels off/out of character and that’s always disappointing. (also dialogue is just...something I really need to work on)

what are your top five songs right now? Ahhh see it changes on my day/mood but right now it’s probably

what are your inspirations? Ahhh - there are many. First and foremost, The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. It’s my favorite book for so many reasons, but it teaches me so much about writing and character development. Also Liesel and Rudy melt my heart every time. I also love all the songs listed above for inspiration, and I listen to I Get To Love You by Ruelle (it’s the Malec wedding song for any Shadowhuners fans out there!) whenever I write a really emotionally intense romantic scene. If you’re looking for amazing fic recs, I highly recommend all of HMS-Chill’s works (multi fandoms), clarkesbell, and DracoWillHearAboutThis on Ao3. Though not all of them write Bellarke/the 100, if you are in any of their fic fandoms, I highly recommend checking them out because they are fantastic writers!

what first attracted you to Bellarke? what attracts you now? Honestly? #1 - their development. I love enemies to lovers with my whole heart, but I honestly didn’t see Bellarke as romantic until the 2x05 hug where I was just hit with a wave of OMG THEY BELONG TOGETHER!!! Seriously, though, the fact that they go from enemies, to grudging allies, to co-leaders, to partners, to friends, to best friends, to soulmates just makes my heart go !!!! - Also they have insane chemistry, and that certainly doesn’t hurt. What attracts me to them now is much the same, but also how much they care about each other. They’d go to the ends of the earth to save one another, and it just blows me away how powerful their screen time is, even when their scenes together have become so rare. I also don’t thinkI’m ever getting over 6x10. I swear my heart actually stopped beating when I watched it live the first time.

BESIDES Bellarke, what character or pairing do you like best on t100? Ha! Umm, I actually really like Murven, both platonically and romantically. Their journey might not be as well developed as Bellarke’s but it is still a powerful one hinging on love and forgiveness. I love how Lindsey/Richard play off of each other on screen - it’s such a joy to watch! I’ve also loved the Octavia/Indra dynamic, but it’s kinda been tabled in recent seasons which is sad :(

why did you decide to start writing for bellarkefic-for-blm? Two reasons - 1) I wanted to do everything I could for BLM and it was so amazing that I could do that, and write works for my favorite show! 2) I was super curious about the prompts people would send in. My work right now is a modern day AU COVID fic where Bellamy and Clarke have to share a room together in an overcrowded hospital until one day Clarke disappears. It’s so different than what I usually write - bc I almost always write canon compliant/in universe fics - so it’s a nice challenge!

what’s your writing process like? Honestly it depends. For long/multi-chapter fics I try to plan out as much of it as I can, characters, plot, important moments, etc - even though I am not very good at planning. But for one-shots I tend to go off of emotion or feelings. Usually when I write one-shots, it’s because a particular line or moment in a book/movie/show really spoke out to me, and spurred this idea in my head. I always start with the line I want to get to at the heart of the fic and then write around it from there. I am definitely much more of a panster than a planner- which is why one-shots work much better for me!

what are some things you’d like to recommend? 1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Also, All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston, The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz. 2. Musicals! They can be amazing inspiration - my favorites are Les Mis, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Six, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Hadestown, Anastasia, Island Song, Newsies, & Tuck Everlasting! 3. TV Shows besides The 100 - Anne with an E, Shadowhunters (just pretend you haven’t read the books), French SKAM, Love Victor, HSMTMTS, Merlin, Lucifer, I think I’m just listing fandoms at this point 😂

Also, almost any Taylor Swift, Troye Sivan, Conan Gray, Dua Lipa, Emma Blackery or Harry Styles songs are amazing!

an interview with @osleyakomwonkru (she/her) what are you working on right now? Several things! I’m the queen of many WIPs (let’s not even talk about the ones that are languishing in the limbo of old fandoms). But my priorities right now are my own Season 7 and the promptfills that I’m doing for Bellarke Writers for BLM (but not for Bellarke). I started working on my Season 7 fic last summer as soon as 6x13 aired because I couldn’t wait nine months to find out what happened to Octavia, I needed to answer that myself. So I spent months writing and planning and researching and compiling lore so that I could answer that question myself. Started posting it episode by episode at the beginning of 2020. Then pandemic got in the way of me finishing it before the official season 7 started airing, so right now the first 9 episodes are up, and the last 7 will be up after the official season 7 is finished. So if you want a season 7 that has a bit less planet hopping, more Bellamy, more TALKING and characters taking the time to sort through issues rather than the season 7 we’ve been having, then please check it out! what’s something you’d like to write one day? I’d like to actually finish and publish the myriad of original works I have in a state of perpetual incompleteness. I’ve been writing stories ever since I could hold a crayon, and I’ve never stopped. But the past decade I’ve been focused on a lot of fanfic. what is the fanwork you’re most proud of? Well, I love all of my word-babies, and I’m super proud of my S7 fic as mentioned above, but outside of that series, the fic that holds a special place in my heart is “fly away to heal my broken spirit (there might be peace on the other side)”, which is an Octavia-centric character study written between seasons 5 and 6, whereupon landing on the new planet, Octavia takes off on her own and takes the time she needs to heal from the pain of her past. why did you first start writing fic? Well, the reasons why I first started writing fic are perhaps different than what they are now. I started writing fic when I was a child, when I didn’t even know it was something other people did, let alone something people shared with one another (this was back in the Days of Yore before the Internet, so while now I know fanfic was going on at that time, it wasn’t easily accessible). The longest fic I’ve ever written was when I was a preteen, and it was 943 pages, handwritten, and it was a self-insert RPF where I became best friends with Alanis Morissette. Back then, I wrote fic because I wanted more stories, more adventures with the characters I loved, and in the case of that self-insert, I wanted to be a part of those adventures. But now I write fic for different reasons. Now I write mostly because I want to address the parts that canon leaves out. The parts that aren’t “exciting” for a TV audience, because they’re not full of flashy explosions and fights and whatnot, but that I want to see because they’re a vital part of the character journeys - the talking, the healing, the things that should be addressed so it makes sense to go from A to B in the storyline but tend to be swept under the rug. I’m in a fandom for the characters, so I want to see them and their thoughts and feelings addressed properly and not just get shuttled from one Plot to the next. So as this applies in this fandom, that mostly revolves around letting characters take the time to talk to each other, to sort out their issues, stuff like that. Because after everything they’ve been through, they need this! what frustrates you most about fic writing? Too many ideas. I have so much I want to write, but I also don’t want to abandon projects so it hurts to have to put ideas on the backburner. Also - middles. I often know how I want a story to start and how I want it to end, but the part in the middle is always a bit fuzzier. Middles are hard. what are your top five songs right now? Lunatica - Heart of a Lion (perfect Octavia song!) Icon for Hire - Supposed to Be (also a good Octavia song) Beth Crowley - Don’t Think Just Run (ditto) Really Slow Motion - Unbroken (same) Miley Cyrus - Mother’s Daughter (Hope’s theme song) what are your inspirations? Music is a lot of my inspiration. I have an entire Octavia playlist, and Spotify is really good at recommending more songs to go on it. Spotify has the only useful Internet algorithm. Also, just those moments in canon where you go WTF and you’re like… I need to fix this. Or, “there has to be more than just this”. A lot of scenes demand more than what we saw on screen, so I’m here to provide.

what first attracted you to Octavia? what attracts you now? I started watching t100 between seasons 4 and 5. The specific reason why I started watching was Chai Hansen (Ilian), because he’d just been cast on Shadowhunters, and he was hot, so I went looking to see where else he’d appeared and happened upon this show. So I watched some of his scenes on YouTube, and was intrigued by this chick (Octavia) he was with. Then the next scene I saw was Octavia winning the Conclave in 4x10 and making her speech of unity, and I was sold. I was all “I need to know who this girl is and how she got here”.

So I went back to the beginning, and yes, she was the one. I have A Type when it comes to fandom favourites, and she fits it to a T - the misunderstood badass with a tragic past and a dark side. Octavia Blake, Regina Mills, Magnus Bane, Eliot Spencer, James “Sawyer” Ford, Juliet Burke, they all fit that same archetype.

I just love Octavia so much, because she’s been through so much and she’s still standing and she’s grown and changed and evolved and it’s all been beautiful. Even the dark parts. Especially the dark parts. Because without them she wouldn’t be who she is now. I hate it when people say she’s “back to her old self” now. No. No she’s not. She’s a stronger, wiser and more mature version of herself, and she wouldn’t be that without her darkness or without her healing. I could go on more, but for that you can just go to my blog and read all of my meta. BESIDES Octavia, what character or pairing do you like best on t100? Uhhh… well, Octavia’s kind of my brand. So everything does kind of revolve around her. But I also adore Echo, Diyoza (sob!) and Hope, and I’m so glad that canon Hope is like the Hope I wrote in my S7 fic - fearless, reckless, committed to her family and questioning what makes otherwise sensible women willing to die for Bellamy Blake. I ship Niytavia, and a fair amount of my Niytavia fic is written from Niylah’s point of view rather than Octavia’s. I’ve also written some bunker-era Mackson as best friends to Niytavia, but Miller being a jerk in season 6 has kind of soured that ship for me. But after 7x10 I’m hopeful that he’ll pull his head out of his ass so that I can like that ship again, because Jackson is still all kinds of lovely.

But if we REALLY need to depart from the Octavia sphere, then Murphy’s my man. I don’t have a horse in the race as to which ship he’s a part of, because I can low-key ship him with just about everybody (even Octavia).

why did you decide to start writing for bellarkefic-for-blm? Because I wanted to do something to contribute to the BLM movement, but since I live in a tiny northeastern European country and have no money, going to protests or making donations myself isn’t something I can do. But I can write words so other people donate money, so here I am!

what’s your writing process like? I don’t have a set process. Sometimes a story just FLOWS and I’ll get it done in a few hours. Sometimes it involves a lot of throwing stuff at the wall and hoping it sticks and days and weeks of contemplation and starting to write and hoping it’ll come together at the end. Same applies regardless of what I’m writing, be it my own idea or someone else’s. what are some things you’d like to recommend? My partner in crime in plotting my S7 epic, who I’ll message at 3 in the morning looking to brainstorm ideas, @easilydistractedbyfanfic . You want Murven? They’ve got you covered.
