"Remarkably, hostile neighbors were relatively rare. Writing about homophobia, bell hooks criticizes the contemporary feminist view that homophobia is stronger in the Black community. She argues that, if this is the case today, it is a relatively recent phenomenon. When she was growing up in the South, poor Blacks, who were struggling for survival in a society fraught with racial hatred, did not ostracize their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters. Tolerance, if not acceptance, was the norm. This would appear to be true of Buffalo in the 1950s. Few, if any, Black narrators remember being physically attacked and beaten by Black men. Most white narrators confirm that they felt more accepted in the Black straight world than in the white. This is not to say that homophobia was absent from the Black community in the 1950s; it simply took different forms and it did not generate as much aggressive physical harassment of lesbians.

The police, however, were an ever-present danger. Black narrators, unlike white narrators, recall the police as vicious during the 1950s. Racial prejudice seems to have magnified hostility toward lesbians and gays to the extent that Black lesbians risked arrest for “disorderly conduct” just by walking in their own neighborhoods."

THE RACISM CHAPTER

My name is being brought up a lot so let me make this clear for the last time.

Was I a victim for racism at the hands of the individuals involved in all this drama, yes? Was I a part of the discord that allowed such conversations to take place, yes.

I will speak for both my wife @themotherofhorses and I.

What bugged us the most was how much mayhem got caused every time someone even sneezed the word plagiarism but did nothing to stop the one actively making BIPOC creators uncomfortable. Such as Bel wanting to write a Pocahontas x Daemon fic.

I do have a bone to pick when mods of that discord would mute people for maybe being a slight nuisance. I am guilty of that. But watched as people openly admitted to harassing members of that same discord.

Em and Ange should be allowed the room to learn and grow from this, but we as a community too need to realize that most of this can be handled privately.

And to any future discord mods, please put your foot down when you are trying to curate a space for writers to come together.

men are so annoying my god. they have some of the dumbest takes on women's sports its obvious how disingenuous they are. "wnba players are jealous of caitlyn clark" and all most of them were saying was that caitlyn has a lot to learn playing professional basketball because it's a genuinely tough game and they hope she succeeds. men just keep belittling how skilled a lot of wnba players are and have been until caitlyn clark. they make fun of the wnba without watching it and then act like they know everything and declare caitlyn the sole saviour of the wnba like we haven't had legends like Elena Delle Donne or A'ja Wilson dominating the game. EMBARASSING!

ALSO they are RIGHT to complain about the racism since most brand deals and sponsorships for wnba players are white women. im happy that female athletes are winning and getting money, but it's telling when 70% of the basketball league are black women and most of the sponsorships are held by white women.

the way these goons take out the nuance and the humanity when discussing women's sports and reduce it to infantile squabbles of jealousy just shows how underdeveloped their brains are. like i know you men like inventing drama out of nowhere, but can you just stick to discussing stats? you're so cringe fr.

#1. Breanna Stewart (Stewie) (New York Liberty)

I pledge allegiance. Sincerely. She's so fun on court and weaves between players like that scene in Korra when she had to learn air-bending by evading spinning doors. I can't wait to see her play! (Next to her wife I'm her no# 1 fan don't joke around with me). Check some of her playing out here.

#2. Angel Reese (Chicago Sky)

After an amazing career in college basketball, Reese finally got drafted to the Chicago Sky WNBA team early this year. She's gotten a lot of hate for being justifiably boastful about her skills but she's remained a strong leader for her teammates and had a positive impact on girls and women everywhere. This is her first season in the WNBA and you can expect a show from her! Check some of her highlights here!

#3. Aaliyah Edwards (Washington Mystics)

One of the top picks of this year's WNBA draft, Aaliyah has been a star player for UCONN for years. She is one of the highest rated draft picks of the season! This will be her first season on the WNBA playing for the Washington Mystics. Her rebounds and offences are amazing to witness. Watch her highlights here.

#4. A'ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces)

One of WNBA's modern GOAT'S. A'ja IS INSANE. She intimidates everyone on court and then the court itself. I literally saw the basketball hoop shaking when she looked at it during one of her games! I swear. It peed itself. Her wingspan and strength make her so formidable like y'all just have to watch herrrr!! Oh yeah, and she won the championship and several MVP titles. Check her out here!

#5. Caitlyn Clark (Indiana Fever)

Does she really need an introduction? Her career in college basketball has been spectacular and special for women's sports everywhere! She was breaking records in HIGH SCHOOL! This is going to be her first season in the WNBA and more eyes than ever will be on the game because of her! Check some of her highlights playing for Iowa here.

#6. Rickea Jackson (Los Angeles Sparks)

While playing small-forward on her college team, Rickea made a name for herself as one of the most aggressive offensive players in women's college basketball today! She's strong and fast and alert and is genuine fun to watch. You won't want to miss out on her debut into the WNBA for the LA Sparks! Watch her game highlights here.

#7. Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces)

Kesley Plum is just one of my favorite athletes of all time! She's so dedicated to her team and the people in her life and it shows. Her joy is so infectious! She is also an incredibly, impressively strong and SKILLED athlete! And she was a big reason why LVA won the season last year. (And hallelujah she's divorcing her dumbass husband rn! hopefully the dead weight makes her an even stronger player!). Watch some of her highlights here.

#8. Sabrina Ionescu

Sabrina and Stewie are an unstoppable duo! Watching them play is electric for me! WHEW! Sabrina has made WNBA history with idek how many records! She is the top in the league in assists, triple-doubles, and steals. SHE'S INSANE!!! SHE'S FUCKING RABID!!!! See for yourself here!

#9. Cameron Brink

Cameron Brink debuts in this season of the WNBA for the Sparks! Cameron has had an amazing college career, but is especially known for her strong defence (and being the god-sister of Stephen Curry). She's bound to have a promising season. Watch some of her highlights here.

The strongest teams (IMO) seem to the Aces, the Mystics, the Sparks and New York Liberty. But there are also strong players in teams like Indiana Fever, Dallas Wings and Minnesota Lynx.

If you don't know which team to support, you could just pick your favourite athlete and choose their team. Some people like underdog teams and some people like top dog teams. Based on last season, I'd consider Indiana Fever an underdog team and Las Vegas Aces the top dog team (they won last season). In terms of best teams? LVA players are SEAMLESS. They move like water and it's magical to watch. But so are the Liberties and the Mystics! I genuinely don't know who to pick between those three.

If any of you gyns watch WNBA, please tell me who you're supporting this season and why!

See, I don’t have many friends or mutuals here, I don’t like and I don’t seek to get involved in certain dramas that happen involving content creators because I believe this is a place I look for when I want to distract, not to see the shit that happens for things that don’t interest me, but there is also a big problem that many people don’t care about or practice: racism.

As Brazilian woman and person of color, I incisively condemn the act of racism and xenophobia. I DON’T WANT to be involved with people who at the first opportunity will distill hatred against my nationality and my color, I DON’T ADMIT to be conniving with such acts and such people, so I ask everyone to perform such acts to block me IMMEDIATELY! I don’t want to be in the same space as this kind of people, my blog is a safe place for all people and I don’t accept to be the mutual of a problematic shitty racist/xenophobic.

I saw many things today about people I admired far beyond work, things that I had no idea happened, happened and happen at the moment. I’m still trying to filter everything that happened and find out if things that were exposed are true, but in advance, I don’t want to interact with people who practice or do not see a problem in living with racist people.

Dear AMC Press Center, As a fan of what your creative team has done for the show Interview with the Vampire, I am disappointed in your decision to include Elisa Hansen (aka Maven of the Eventide) in your press events. What your creative team has done is provide an adaptation of a story that explores themes of race/racism and queer relationships and how these two things intersect that the original source material did not. As a result, you have opened this story up to people who otherwise have not been included in this type of media. It is for this reason that I am disappointed in your decision to invite Hansen to any of your events. Hansen has promoted negativity toward the show in ways that illustrate a lack of respect for what your creative team has set out to do and has made her space unwelcoming to the very audience whom this show appeals to and who, arguably, have been its strongest supporters. Additionally, Hansen herself has admitted that she has not entered any contests to be invited to any events. It seems unfair that she should get this privilege when other content creators have been more supportive of this version of the story being told. Again, considering how important this show is for your strongest supporters, this is a disappointment. I hope you will make better decisions in who you choose to give this kind of privilege and opportunity to in the future.

Racism by trans people and their allies is why they will never get the support of black women and girls.

At least conservatives have the honesty to call you a slur and keep it moving. But white leftists/liberals will be coy about their views of black people especially black women.

Black women, those people feel entitled to your activism, your emotional and physical labor. When you say no, when you prioritize yourself, and when you walk away.

This is when they reveal what they think about you.

Because why is the first thought about a black woman being beaten related to her being "masculine".

Why did you equate that act to her being viewed as masculine by white men and not a hate crime?

Why was it not an act of misogynistic violence? Or racism? In this hypothetical all of this was ignored. But you jumped straight to her being masculine?

These white trans people and their allies have racist implicit racial biases that accidentally slip out when you refuse to support them.

And when you push them on why you felt the need to create this hypothetical that called black women "masculine" at the hands of physical violence of white men?

They'll bring up something about Emmitt Till (get his history and death wrong), conservatives, Loving v Virginia, and everything unrelated to why their first thought about black women is masculine?

Because secretly they have dehumanized you and you're only as good for them when your a slave or mammy doing unpaid and unrequited emotional and physical labor.

Choose yourself. Always.

I just had @mydemonsdrivealimo hop very politely into my DMs, following my reblogging a post about racism and whitewashing in fandom spaces. I had said something to the effect of “as white people, we will fuck up, and when we do fuck up, its time to apologise, listen, and do better”.  -- perfect time to walk the talk!

MJ pointed out that I was one of many who had recently reblogged whitewashed art of a character of colour, and said absolutely nothing about it

Let me take a moment to apologise for this. Whitewashing in fandom spaces is unfortunately all too common, such to the point that people like myself who have white privilege, who are so used to existing in spaces that take great strides to accommodate them first, are able to look at art of characters we know and love and not even notice that something is off.

This has been a reminder for me to be more critical of what I am consuming. 

I’m not above acknowledging my own fuck ups! My behavior was racist. I reblogged whitewashed art of a POC character, that was a shitty thing to do, and I’m sorry to anyone I may have hurt with my carelessness.

I also took a second to thank MJ -- our conversation was calm and patient (far more patient than necessary), and I really appreciated that they took the time to speak to me!

It can seem like the easy thing to do in this situation is stick your head in the sand and just not talk about it. I think there is fear that if you acknowledge you did an awful thing, it means you are admitting you are a horrible person. But this kind of complacency hurts people. Silence hurts people. And this is exactly how the cycle of casual racism in fandom spaces perpetuates -- just quietly hoping something will go away if you hide from your own failings isn’t going to help matters.

I’m not a horrible person, but I can make mistakes, and I can learn from them. So this is me trying my best to listen and do better!

"Raising humanitarian aid" is a grift Western governments are pushing right now to deflect from the fact that they're sending billions to Israel to keep carpet bombing Gazans. As long as the blockades are still in place there will never be enough aid for two million people. (UPDATE: PLEASE DONATE to the Gazan's GoFundMe fundraisers to help them buy food and get out of Rafah into Egypt. E-SIMs, food and medical supplies are also essential. I think it's one of the reasons that a lot of people like to ban books, and we're looking at some of the governance up there, ‘Well, we don't want these stories told.’ But these stories have to be told because you have to ask yourself, what would I have been? What kind of person?

Who would I be if I encounter those unlike me?

You know, there's a card, one of my favorite cards, it's just a card you can purchase at any place. It says teaching your child not to step on a caterpillar does as much for your child as it does the caterpillar. And I've always loved it.

I have bunches, I buy it by the box and I send it out to friends. Because yeah, the caterpillar is just gonna die and the caterpillar’s like, ‘this fool's gonna step on me.’ But it teaches your child it's okay to step on something that's underneath you, that's smaller than you, that might could use your help.
