I want to talk about this moment real fast. Especially since Gem and I have talked a lot about how Petra isn’t really a “guest” and more of a prisoner/hostage in the Empire.
Ferdie says this in White Clouds chapter 10 right after Jeralt’s death. Himself and Petra when exploring the monastery that month can be found talking in the dining hall. Petra gets angry with Ferdinand for him suggesting that she return to Brigid. He goes on to basically say that he’s not telling her that to offend her, but here he hesitates.
He calls her a guest, but I think deep down he knows she’s not. That she’s there because she was forced to be. But at the same time I think he’s also somewhat naive enough to believe that she has more freedom at this point than she actually does. He thinks far too highly of the Empire and the system in place (and that really shows with how he speaks of the nobility and during his supports with Petra before he admits that he was ignorant of how practical fighting styles from other countries are). It’s something he grows out of in time as the war comes, but I just think it was an interesting little thing.
