"Oh god this fucking dress." You huff as you pull the bottom down, annoyed at your choice of clothing.
"What? It's so cute!" Your friend Nella looked you up and down through the bathroom mirror. You gave her a "seriously?" look and walked out of the bathroom into your hotel room.
You glanced at the time on your phone "It's almost 11:00." You say as Nella plops down on the couch next to you with a big tired groan. You sit down beside her and close your eyes, enjoying the quiet for a bit.
Today was the 20th of March. Kenny's birthday.
Yes the Kenny from YouTube's Beta Squad. You personally knew him from FootAsylum, and because of your weekly shootings, you had become good friends. Maybe not too good, but good enough for him to invite you to his massive celebration right in the middle of London.
He rented out a whole floor at one of London's fancy hotels (which you didn't even know the name of) and invited a shit ton of people.
Crazy guy is what you thought.
The floor was mostly a club or some sort of disco area and the rest of it was an indoor pool.
Weird.
And knowing that you'd probably get drunk out of your mind, and because you didn't want to drive back and forth through London, you and Nella did what basically everyone else did: get a hotel room a couple of floors below (couple of floors because no one wants to hear booming music in their drunken sleep).
And as you and Nella laid around on the couch, you couldn't stop complaining about your dress and the fact that it kept riding up and almost revealing your butt, little did you know that that was something you will have forgotten about almost instantly.
"Girl I got you. I won't be leaving your side. I'll cover your precious ass." She joked.
"Nells I'm serious!" You gave her a shove "I'm not going to survive the embarrassment if tomorrow a drunk video of me in my underwear will be surfing the net!"
"Oh god y/n, these aren't Hollywood superstars. I know like more than half of these people and they aren't as vile as you think they are!" Nella had a point. You had only just began your whole YouTube career after one of your FootAsylum videos skyrocketed and you became (not a well-known) but a known influencer.
As worried as you were, you might've been overreacting a little. You knew a good amount of people (or more like heard of them) that were coming and really nothing could go wrong.
"Hey, Kenny." You say as he waved from inside the party room that was practically empty.
"Where is everyone?" You quiz as you lean in for a greeting hug.
"You guys actually came early." A tint of enthusiasm was heard in his voice which made you feel welcomed and wanted.
"You guys can do whatever you want. Toilet's down the hallway and out the door, it's both men and women so don't get scared, bar is right there," Kenny pointed to a fancy setup which was mostly made up of glass "If you need to get away you can go down the other hallway, there's like couches or something...but honestly I doubt anyone will use that room. Pool, smoke room I think they have hookas there-"
"Shiiit," Nella grins excitedly.
"Yeah and uh if you need anything come to me." Kenny claps his hands and looks at both of you.
There's nothing you can do except nod, all of a sudden all the previous worry washed away. This place was too good and too worth it to be hiding in a little corner.
Five minutes later you and Nella ended up splitting. You went to the bar and she was too intrigued by the hookas that she couldn't wait until you got your hands on at least one drink.
You hop on the stool in-front of the counter and smile at the bartender "One Negroni please."
"Yes ma'am," he says extra formally, in a joking way, and starts throwing bottles around and doing...bartender-y things.
While he was working his magic, you were busy looking around the room. A few more faces showed up and some of them looked familiar. You recognized Chunkz, Niko and there were two more guys, names of which you struggled to recall.
One thing you knew for sure is that they were part of the Beta Squad and you thought you even saw one on the set of FootAsylum's Liar Liar. Your thoughts were quickly cleared and forgotten as the satisfying clinging of the glass caught your attention. You turned around and saw your drink, instantly grinning and picking it up "Thank you." You nodded and turned to face the spacious room, determined to find Nella as fast as possible.
You didn't really need to "search" for her. You knew exactly where she was at.
"I'm scared for your lungs." You stood over Nella, who was spread out on the couch, blowing puffs of smoke in your face.
"Ironic. Well I'm worried for your kidneys." She points at the drink in your hand and sends another cloud at you, making you break out into a series of coughs.
"Right-" you wheeze "I'll be at the bar if you need me." You cover your mouth and hurry out of the room, sighing as you felt the fresh cold and airconed air hit your skin.
During everything that was mentioned earlier, somewhere in the middle of the room all of Beta Squad, along with Harry and Filly, were exchanging thoughts on the upcoming party.
"This place looks fire." AJ said, looking around in awe.
"Yeah, crazy how many people he invited." Niko chuckled pointing at Kenny.
"What? How many?" Chunkz raised his eyebrows, sure that it couldn't be that much.
"Not that much," Kenny tried looking away.
"Oh yeah, yeah," Niko said sarcastically "I saw the list. It's mad, I'm telling you he's gone up to every single person in London and asked if they wanna come."
Everyone laughed at Niko's comment.
"Nah it'll be fun." Kenny nodded "It's a chance for everyone to meet new people." He shrugged.
"Yeah or clart them." Harry blurted out, all his jokes being more out of pocket than the previous ones.
"Woooaahhh!" Chunkz exclaimed while everyone laughed, probably more from how awkwardly Harry had said it rather than the actual "joke".
"On the topic of new people." Sharky spoke up, coming over to Kenny and placing a hand on his shoulder "Who's that with Nella."
Kenny followed Sharky's gaze, seeing you talking to Nella next to the bar.
Of course everyone else looked.
"Guys don't stare!" Sharky whispered aggressively, nudging Chunkz and Niko that were closest to him.
"Yeah see he gets what I mean." Harry said, referring to his previous joke.
"Tsk, Harry what the hell." Sharky furrowed his eyebrows while everyone tried to hide their giggles and smiles.
"That's y/n." Kenny turned back to his friend "Haven't you met before?"
Sharky shook his head "I think I would've remembered."
Kenny shrugged "I can introduce you."
A few woo’s and ooh’s emitted from the guys, which Sharky quickly had to shush down.
"No I don't want it to be awkward." He glanced at you one more time, this time seeing you by yourself while Nella went to the smoke room.
"Go talk to her," Niko poked Sharky's shoulder "While she's alone."
"Nooooo," Sharky hissed at Niko, flicking away his finger "It's gonna be awkward as fuck."
"Pussy." AJ stated.
"Aje shut the fuck up." Sharky fired back "I said I don't wanna scare her."
"Or maybe you're just scared yourself." Kenny grinned.
"You too? Seriously?"
"Ok, ok, sorry." Kenny put his arms on Sharkys shoulders and hurried to apologize.
"How about Kenny just introduces all of us to her and then like...you know," Chunkz moved his eyebrows up and down.
"Yeah that could work." Kenny nodded.
"Can't believe Sharky's scared of gyal." AJ snickered from behind Filly, who was also trying not to laugh.
It really came as a shock to everyone that one of the most good looking guys of the group was scared to approach a lady, despite Sharky saying that "he didn't want to scare you off". Yes, maybe he didn't, but he was also scared himself, just like Kenny had said.
Fast forward back to the present where you were walking out of the hookah room. You took a sip of your Negroni before opening the door and as you did, you were caught off guard by the group of people that were right in front of you. Your breathe hitched but instead of breathing air you inhaled a bit of your drink and began coughing.
"Oh shit we did scare her." AJ commented from behind everyone. Luckily it wasn't too bad to get everyone worried.
"y/n, remember how you asked me about the Beta Squad?" Kenny gleamed at you.
You cleared your throat "Yeah."
"Well I'd like to introduce you to Chunkz," you shook his hand, of course you knew Chunkz, "And this is Niko-"
"Nice to meet you." He was very tall in person.
"AJ," that's who looked familiar off of FootAsylum's set "Then you've seen these two around often on shooting, Filly and Harry."
"Hi," you tried to put on a friendly smile, but really you were terrified by the amount of people you were in front of right now.
"And Sharky."
You extended your arm out before looking up. As you did, your fake smile quickly turned into a real one as you acknowledged the man before you. You shook hands too and as you did his friends spoke up.
"He likes football." Someone stated.
"He can drive-"
"Also he started cooking-"
You furrowed your eyebrows and chuckled in confusion as the comments kept coming.
"Yeah he makes the best soups-"
"Guys what the hell." Sharky tried to get everyone to calm down, but no one was planning on stopping. They didn't do it out of jokes, they genuinely wanted to present their friend.
"He has a podcast."
Now that caught your attention.
"Really?" You quizzed, interest drawn all over your face and Sharky caught onto it straight away.
"Yeah." He nodded proudly.
"I've been wanting to start one for ageeess," you explain, now forgetting about everyone and focusing on Sharky and what he had to say "Could you maybe like," you shrug "Give me any tips? Or maybe like tell me how you started everything?"
"Yeah sure." He said as calmly as he possibly could, but inside he was bursting! Not only did he successfully approach you (well kind of) he ended up gaining your interest which hinted at a future conversation.
"Alright, then we'll leave you to it." Kenny smiled, he was probably more excited than Sharky himself in the moment.
"Oh- Like right now?" You ask "Are you sure? I don't wanna like-" you motion to the guys "Separate you from everyone. It's a party after all."
"It hasn't even started yet." AJ said bluntly, earning a smack on the head from Harry with a whisper of "Shut up."
"No I don't mind." Sharky shook his head "Besides it's one of the things I can talk about for a loooong time." He grinned.
Your face was glowing with enthusiasm and you couldn't wait to hear Sharky's story...and possibly spend time with him, but you were still working out that part. After getting yourself a Martini, you and Sharky headed to the couch areas, yes that exact room that you were sure no one was going to use. But hey, this doesn't count, like AJ said the party hasn't even begun yet.
"Soooo," you said as the two of you sat down next to each other, maybe a little awkwardly "What's the best advice you can give me?"
Sharky chuckled "Well it's all about the desire of actually doing it. Just like with anything you have to be passionate and patient to get the results you want."
You nod in agreement, surprised at how wise he sounded.
"You need to choose a topic and it would be best if it's a range of things that are connected to one other thing so you don't feel like you're going off topic when you talk."
You nod, genuinely interested and fully submerged into the ongoing conversation.
For half an hour the two of you talked just about podcasting, but the other half hour was when things started to get a little more interesting.
The conversation steered in a totally different direction after you asked Sharky "Wait why didn't you get yourself a drink?" And then you discovered that he apparently doesn't drink at all.
"WHAT!?" You exclaimed "No fucking way."
"Yes fucking way." Sharky laughed.
"You're telling me you've never had alcohol? Ever?"
He shook his head.
It was like your world had exploded.
Then after religion you started talking about life in general. Sharky told you all about The Beta Squad and how it all started, whilst you shared your story about how you became friends with Nella Rose and ended up on FootAsylum.
You were currently talking about sports and who supported which football team, when suddenly you heard a loud bang vibrate through the glass walls. You turned to the door seeing Nella with a shocked expression and two drinks in her hands. You looked back at Sharky "Shit, we should probably go back."
He scratched the back of his head, nodding.
"Well, I'll see you around." You flash a smile at him before getting up and joining Nella.
Sharky watched you leave the room, saying something to your friend, making her laugh.
He didn't take his eyes off of you, watching you take a sip and wince at what he probably guessed was a strong cocktail. He kept his gaze stuck onto you until you turned the corner and disappeared back into the main party room.
He sighed taking a second to process his thoughts and feelings. He didn't know what exactly it was that he was feeling. Ironically everyone always said that he was the "ladies man" but as soon as it actually comes to the real life interaction, he was just as confused as everyone else and that did not help his confidence whatsoever.
Meanwhile you were back in the familiar room which was now full of people, strobing with colorful lights and boosting with music. The base was so strong that you felt the sound waves through the floor.
"LETS FUCKING DANCE!" Nella screeched into your ear, snatching your empty glass and placing it onto a table, before grabbing your wrist and pulling you after her right into the crowd of dancing people.
You felt like you were at the club, or a disco.
It was full of unfamiliar people that had only one thing in common with you: they were drunk to shit. At least you felt carefree and happy, even though it was drunk-happy. You and Nella jumped, danced, sang into each others faces and even had a mini dance battle. 10 songs later you were stumbling back to the bar, thirsty and exhausted.
"Can I have a-a," you furrowed your eyebrows, drunkly running a hand through your hair "Margarita?" You raised your eyebrows, saying the first thing that came to your mind.
A minute later you were washing down the alcohol in just a few gulps.
"SHIT YOU CAN DRINK!" You heard a voice yell somewhere from beside you as the bottom of your glass clacked against the counter. You turned around and saw Sharky, face instantly lighting up.
"Hhheeeyyy!" You smiled, tilting your head. Luckily Sharky could tell you were stoned out of your mind, so he didn't deem your unusually long "hey" as embarrassing and just chuckled.
"Wha-I didn't see you on the dance floor." You said, leaning forward in a clumsy motion.
"Uh, yeah," he raised an eyebrow, amused by your tone and enhanced drunk facial expressions.
"Why not?" You tilted your head again, maybe a little too much.
"I was-"
Sharky didn't even get to finish.
You hopped off the bar stool and yanked him after you, heading to the crowd of people. Despite feeling tired after the rave with Nella, you still wanted to go with him.
"Oh." He watched you struggle to walk in a straight line, entertained but also worried.
On the way there you bumped into Nella, Filly and Chunkz, who stopped you with a big "Hey!"
There was a slight pause as everyone focused on Sharky and you holding onto his hand.
"What are you guys up to?" Nella quizzed with a grin as she glanced at Sharky who had the most forced "I'm okay" smile known to humanity.
"Apparently he hasn't been on the dance floor yet!" You say it like it's the most outrageous fact they could've heard.
"Wow," Chunkz says nodding his head dramatically.
"I know!" You were too drunk to notice how playful that "wow" actually was, and took it in as his genuine surprise.
Sharky rolled his eyes to Chunkz's statement.
"You know, it's funny cause he's actually a dancer." He pointed at Sharky with a mysterious snicker.
"What!?" You exclaimed into Sharky's ear "You didn't tell me!"
"Yeah, I just...forgot? I’m not really-"
You widened your eyes "You need to teach me some moves!"
"Yep, he loves teaching!" Chunkz gave the situation a little nudge.
"For real?" Your mouth opened in excitement as Chunkz continued "Yeah! He teaches us all the time!"
Without anymore words you continued dragging Sharky towards the dance floor and as you did, he flipped off Chunkz in the process, knowing damn well that AJ and Niko were so going to make fun of him tomorrow.
"Teach me!" You yelled over the music, excited to see what type of moves you'd learn.
"Uh, well..." Sharky's eyes darted around the room "Maybe," he did the macarena and you instantly cracked up.
He watched in awe as you laughed away, trying to hide your face with your hand but failing drunkly.
"Cmon, be for real now!" You moved your hair behind your ears, ready to actually learn something.
He shrugged, then proceeded to move his hips while his hand did smooth motions around him, one in front and one behind, before then switching and repeating the same thing.
Your mouth dropped open as you watched.
"That was actually so good!" You yelled.
"Thank you!"
"Okay, okay, my turn." You got into position and after a small pause tried to copy him. The hands were fine, you actually managed to mimic him perfectly in that area, but the hip movements were absolutely hilarious. Sharky didn't want to laugh, but you were doing it so weirdly that he really struggled to keep it together.
"Whaaat?!" You whined, stopping.
"Nothing, nothing." He bit his lip and shook his head, but that wasn't enough to contain his laughter.
"Whaaat!?" You giggled, giving him a playful shove on the shoulder to which he again shook his head.
You roll your eyes, realizing that dance was evidently not your strongest talent.
You were about to say something to Sharky, but your mind quickly switched to the song that began playing in the background.
"Oh my god!" You shrieked "I love this song!"
You instantly recognized the familiar nostalgic tune: On the Floor - Jenifer Lopez.
And so did Sharky, this song reminded everyone of the good old days. In the rush of exhilaration you grabbed Sharky's hand and swerved past everyone in the crowd of people in efforts of getting closer to the DJ booth. While Pitbull rapped his verse, Sharky was trying his absolute best to hold onto you, afraid that he'd lose you in the wave.
"Sharky!" He heard someone call out. He turned around seeing AJ waving while beside him Niko did questionable dance moves.
All Sharky could do was mouth a "sorry" before disappearing behind two dancing girls.
"Hey, was he with y/n?" AJ faced Niko, who was now trying to do the robot.
"What?" He stopped.
"Was Sharky with y/n just now?"
"I don't know." Niko shrugged.
"Can't you see them over everyone with your long ass neck?" AJ snickered.
"Aye you be quiet," Niko whacked him on the back of the head before the two continued with what they were doing...or more like dancing.
While that happened, you and Sharky found a little space next to the stand between a group of people that were all preparing for the adrenaline-filled beat drop.
"You know we're running shit tonight on the floor! Brazil," you pointed to Sharky.
"Morocco!"
"London to Ibiza!"
"Straight to LA!"
"New York!"
"Vegas to Africa!"
"Daaance the night away live your life and stay young on the floooor," you and Sharky both hummed while doing slowmo movements, that actually looked really funny from the side, but really so did everyone.
You both leaned in, continuing to sing the lyrics as your eyes locked and breathing unified "Daaance the night away grab somebody, drink a little moreeee."
On the "grab somebody" Sharky scooped both of your hands into his and raised them up.
"Are you ready?" He yelled over the booming music. You giggle and nod your head.
With the beat drop came the electrifying surge of adrenaline and thrill. The lights flashed and everything looked like a stop motion movie. Without letting go of Sharky's hands you jumped up and down, eyes closed and soul open as you sang along "Laaaa la la la-la la la la la la la la la laaaa, tonight we gon' be it on the floor!"
As the two of you jumped, spun, sang and yelled, everything else around you seemed like a blur and it wasn't just because you were drunk. It was like the two of you were in your own little bubble, your own little world.
Lots of people were looming everywhere, but all Sharky could see was your bright smile, adorable squinting eyes and funny dance moves that he found very cute.
You were going all out, already sweating, panting and trying your best to breathe through your laughter.
In the moment everything felt so surreal and you didn't want to lose that feeling.
You didn't want to lose that serotonin that engulfed you with every melody.
You didn't want to lose this special happiness.
You didn't want to lose Sharky.
The music was pumping, and the rhythm was addictive. The two of you let yourselves go, lost in the magic of the moment. Your bodies moved in sync, eyes locked onto each others. You danced like you had all the time in the world, like nothing else mattered in the moment. Time stood still, and for a few fleeting seconds, you forgot about all your troubles and worries, lost in the moment, with each other, dancing like no one was watching.
As the song came to an end you felt like you were going to throw up, exhausted, from previous dancing with Nella, and drunk, but glowing out of pure joy.
"Are you okay?" Sharky gleamed at you.
You nodded "I think I need to like-"
"What!?" Sharky couldn't hear you from how loud it was. He placed his hands on your shoulders and leaned down, pulling you in closer so he could hear you speak.
"I need a breather!" You shout.
Sharky was quick to get you out of the packed crowd and back to the bar, where you ran into Harry Pinero and an unfamiliar girl.
"Hey, Sharky," Harry said in a playful voice, noticing you next to him.
"Hi." He replied unenthusiastically.
"Can I have a water please?" You leaned over the bar table, ignoring the conversation that was going on behind you.
"I see your nights going...well." Harry smirks, taking a sip of his drink.
"Yeah, it is actually." Sharky admits, glancing at you who was now finishing the glass of water like you haven't had any in days.
"Good for you." Harry nods, raising his glass and finishing it in one gulp before then turning around to his companion and heading to the hookah room. Sharky watched them, dreading tomorrows morning encounter with all his existence.
"You alright?" You snap him out of his thoughts.
He looks down at you and nods with a smile "Are you?"
"Yeah I feel a bit...sick."
"Oh shit, wanna go to that room we were in? I doubt anyone will be there."
"Yeah," you breathe.
Sharky puts his arm around your back, making sure you didn't trip over, as the pair of you made your way to the next door room.
You let out a sigh of relief as you felt the soft couch dent under you, resting your head on the back of it. Sharky glances at you, a little concerned by how unusually tired you look.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
You nod with your eyes closed "I just feel a little nauseous."
"That can't be good." Sharky thought to himself, realizing that it was best if you were to lay down or maybe even go to bed.
He's seen how much you had to drink and the more worrying thing was how much he hasn’t seen you drink.
"Hey, listen maybe it's best if you were to lay down, I can drive you home or you can have a rest in my room." He paused and hurried to add "Not in like that way you know just if you're feeling unwell- uh- like maybe if you feel sick- like the bathroom, you know-"
Even drunk you could tell how uneasy and flustered Sharky felt.
"I have a room here with Nella." You chuckle as you sit up and catch his gaze with your half open eyes.
"I can walk you there." He almost whispered as you moved your face closer to his, the distance between your lips gradually decreasing.
Sharky's eyes widen as realization slowly creeps in on what's about to happen. His breathe hitched as he felt your warm lips ghost over his, but before you could lean in and kiss him, he jolted back.
You felt your stomach knot and mouth go dry.
Why did he pull away? Did he not want to kiss you? Did you do something wrong? Did you go too far?
You felt your throat tighten and eyes begin to prickle with tears as you moved away from Sharky, trying your best to hold yourself together.
"I- Uh- Sorry I didn't meant to-" your voice was thick and raspy as your words came out choked and messy.
"What? No no no no no," Sharky placed his hand on your arm "No, y/n, that's not- Oh my god no!" He saw your eyes glisten and a thin line of tears form over them.
You sniff shaking your head "Sorry, I just thought-"
"No please don't cry," Sharky moves over, wrapping his arms around you. Despite the fact that he had just somewhat rejected you, you can't help but hug him in return, hiding your face in his chest whilst trying your best not to cry too loudly.
"y/n please don't be upset," Sharky says in a hushed tone as he rubs your back.
You sniff before looking up at him "Why don't you wanna kiss me?" By now your mascara had a mind of its own, running from the corners and smudging under your eyes.
"I do. Trust me I really do," he smiled softly "But you're drunk and you aren't feeling well. I just- " he sighs "It just wouldn't feel right considering the vulnerable state you're in."
"Oh." You snivel. Sharky let's out a small laugh and wipes your cheeks with the sleeve of his sweater.
"I feel so dumb." You groan, hanging your head down to hide away from him in embarrassment.
"Hey it's ok," you can hear the warm smile in Sharky's voice "Honestly it took all of my self control to do that."
You let out a small chuckle before looking back up at him.
That night Sharky walked you to your room and made sure you were alright with going to bed yourself.
You fell asleep with a grin on your face and with the feeling of excitement to wake up in the morning.
"Yep girl, that's it. Let it all out." Nella patted you on the back as you crouched over the toilet seat, throwing up everything your stomach had.
"Oh my god." You panted, looking up to take a whiff of air "Im never drinking again." You whined.
"Uhuh, like the last time you were never gonna drink again?"
"You know what I-" aaand you were back at it.
In the meantime everyone else you knew was having breakfast on the top floor of the hotel, enjoying the buffet and the open fresh air.
"So Sharky," AJ snickered "How'd yesterday go? You disappeared for quite some time."
"Really?" Kenny's eyebrows jumped up in surprise.
"Yeah, with we-all-know-who."
Sharky shook his head without any amusement, continuing to eat his breakfast.
"Oh cmon you have to tell us about it!" Chunkz threw his arms up.
"Nothing. Happened." Sharky stated.
"Ain't no way nothing happened." Harry joined in "I've seen you go into that couch-room."
"Oh, good to know someone actually used it." Kenny chuckled.
"Used?" Sharky raised a brow "I'm telling you, nothing happened. She felt sick so I," he shrugged "You know walked her to her room and then she went to bed." Sharky couldn't keep in his smile, remembering last night like it was something from a fairy tail, even that almost-kiss had his heart fluttering.
Chunkz caught onto that and gave a cheeky giggle "Aayyeee look at him smiling and everything." He pointed at his friend "Sharky likeesss her."
"Yeah so much that he apparently abandoned his friends on the dance floor." Niko furrowed his eyebrows and raised his hands up.
"Wha- I didn't abandon you. No need to be so dramatic."
Niko scoffed jokingly "Bros before girls!"
Everyone broke into a series of giggles and laughs.
"y/n is nice tho," Kenny said while chewing, evidently being the most innocent one out of everyone.
"She really is." Sharky agreed while everyone else continued to laugh, this time at Kenny's random statement.
"What?" He quizzed in confusion.
"So what you gonna go on a little date?" Niko asked.
As much as everyone was teasing Sharky about it, they were also invested in what was to come.
Was he going to ask you out?
Would you agree?
"Yeah I guess. I mean I do like her."
"Sick." Kenny commented "Look at me bringing people together."
"Yes, let's toast to that...With water because almost everyone is insanely hung over!" Harry raised his glass.
Unfortunately you didn't end up going to breakfast at all because you spent the entire morning throwing up.
As you rolled around in bed, holding onto your stomach, you and Nella heard a knock on the door.
"Ill check, you stay down." She says, getting up and heading to the hallway. Five seconds later you heard her call out your name, and without any thought you got up and lazily dragged your feet to the door.
"Who is-Oh my god hi." You almost fainted seeing Sharky there, considering your messed up state. He, on the other hand, looked amazing.
"Wha-You look insanely fresh for a person who's been partying all night." You speak your mind as you look him up and down.
"Thank you, perks of not drinking." He grins.
"Oh right, you don't drink." You nod, remembering yesterdays conversation "Well I did and now I look like shit." You scratch the back of your head.
"Nah, nah. You look..."
You raised your eyebrows, waiting for him to continue.
"Maybe just a little tired."
You chuckled rolling your eyes.
"Anyway I uh, didn't see you at breakfast."
"Yeah, sorry couldn't make it, I was throwing up all morning."
"Ooohhh...right okay makes sense." He nods. You can't help but grin at how awkward and shy he was acting, standing there in front of you, swaying from side to side whilst fiddling with the sleeves of his sweater.
"I uh wanted to ask, if you would want to go to the-I mean on a date? Maybe?"
"Are you kidding? Obviously."
"Obviously?" Sharky let's out a confused chuckle.
"Oh please, just because I'm sober now doesn't mean that I don't like you. I remember yesterday quite well."
"Ah," he nods "Okay that's good."
You grin "It is good. And I can't wait for the date."
"Text you?"
"Do you have my number?" You raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah," his tone was unsure.
"Wait how'd you-"
"Kenny."
You nodded "Alright. I'll be uh, waiting."
"Yep." Sharky looks around "Bye?"
You step forward, embracing him in a tight hug "See you."

Heyy!! I saw ur rq were open and I was about to ask for one until I realized it might've been too graphic So, I wanted to ask what you will and won't write. (E.g depression, sh, Ed's, romance, smut, etc).
I just don't want to accidentally make u uncomfortable.
Hey there!, thanks for asking first!.
I will write romance, some slightly gory stuff (my Sharky series has an element of that) and some stuff about depression (though I will kinda base it off of some experiences I’ve had over Covid)
But I don’t really feel comfortable writing about sh, Ed or smut. For the first two its cause I haven’t struggled with either nor do I know someone who has, and I don’t want to dive into those topics without knowing how to properly portray them in a way that won’t seriously harm others.
And for smut it’s cause I just don’t know how to write it and I’m personally not interested in writing it.

Let me just say that to get one ask is awesome. To get five asking for the same pair especially when it’s these two? <3 You’re all fantastic for asking, and I’m all too glad to dive into this for them.
Hana Vao / Sharky Boshaw

General:
Rate the Ship -
Awful | Ew | No pics pls | I’m not comfortable | Alright | I like it! | Got Pics? | Let’s do it! | Why is this not getting more attention?! | The OTP to rule all other OTPs
How long will they last? - These two are full-on set on driving into that sunset together, and this last until they’re old and gray.
How quickly did/will they fall in love? - It’s pretty fast for both. Sharky was a little love-struck if not during their initial intro, then shortly after, wondering who the hell this woman was, yelling Die Hard quotes while handing him molotovs, and why he didn’t have a chance to meet her sooner. Hana on the other hand was immediately charmed by his brand of absurdity, and after a week or two on the road, found she didn’t want to go a day without it. It didn’t take much longer for feelings to set in after that.
How was their first kiss? - Oh, it was a doozy. Entirely on accident, especially since she just wanted to thank him for always being sweet to her (and for finding coffee, b/c going without it’s been rough), and wanted to kiss his cheek. No big deal. She lays one right on his mouth instead, and the residual shock and the holy shit of it all makes her immediately exit stage left. The kiss they share later on down the line’s one she’s much more content with, b/c there’s no grey area, no doubting it at all, and the minute he returns it she’s almost overwhelmed by it. Sharky’s easily in the same boat, b/c this isn’t wishful thinking, or him hoping for something that isn’t there. It’s her wanting him, and once he can shut his mouth for longer than a few seconds at a time they get to making up for all the times they should’ve kissed before.
Wedding:
Who proposed? - Sharky! It’s years down the line, but he finds a way to make a ring for her, and after checking to see if it fits, immediately proposes to her on the spot.
Who is the best man/men? - There’s no official ceremony, but Sharky would’ve wanted Hurk there for it, if possible.
Who is the braid’s maid(s)? - Hana would’ve definitely asked Grace.
Who did the most planning? - Sharky! Hana had no damn clue what he had in mind, or was planning, but he actually managed to get a little misty-eyed while watching a proposal scene from one of her movie picks, so...
Who stressed the most? - Sharky. Though the poor guy didn’t get hit with most of it until he’d slipped the ring onto her finger.
How fancy was the ceremony? -
Back of a pickup truck | 2 | 3 | 4 | Normal Church Wedding | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Kate and William wish they were this big.
Who was specifically not invited to the wedding? - N/A (Hurk Sr. gets an honorary mention here, though)
Sex:
Who is on top? - Both like the other on top so they’ll definitely switch, but Hana’s probably there the most often.
Who is the one to instigate things? - They’re both equally guilty of this with varying degrees of subtlety, and Hana’s absolutely burst out laughing at a few of Sharky’s attempts, but always gets right to kissing him soon after.
How healthy is their sex life? -
Barely touch themselves let alone each other | 2 | 3 | 4 | Once a couple weeks, nothing overboard | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They are humping each other on the couch right now - (hey, they’re making up for lost time here)
How kinky are they? -
Straight missionary with the lights off | 2 | 3 | 4 | Might try some butt stuff and toys | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Don’t go into the sex dungeon without a horse’s head
How long do they normally last? - A good couple of rounds if they’re in a safe place, and time’s no object.
Do they make sure each person gets an equal amount of orgasms? - They certainly try (though she grouses at Sharky whenever he gets a lead on her, leaving him wearing the worst shit-eating grin)
How rough are they in bed? -
Softer than a butterfly on the back of a bunny | 2 | 3 | 4 | The bed’s shaking and squeaking every time | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Their dirty talk is so vulgar it’d make Dwayne Johnson blush. Also, the wall’s so weak it could collapse the next time they do it.
How much cuddling/snuggling do they do? -
No touching after sex | 2 | 3 | 4 | A little spooning at night, or on the couch, but not in public | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They snuggle and kiss more often than a teen couple on their fifth date to a pillow factory.
Children:
How many children will they have naturally? - Two! Gabrielle, and I’m still trying to zero in on a name for their little boy. Rocky? Jack? Kurt?
How many children will they adopt? - N/A
Who gets stuck with the most diapers? - These two try to split this duty right down the middle.
Who is the stricter parent? - Hana, which is a feat. XD
Who stops the kid(s) from doing dangerous stunts after school? - Also, Hana, b/c no matter what she and Sharky got up to before this, it’s really for the best that neither of the kids try to emulate that.
Who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? - It’s a team effort, and any no-cult AU would totally involve Sharky handing bags of chips and jerky to each kid with Hana on his heels ready with a sandwich or two.
Who is the more loved parent? - They’re both pretty equal, but Gabby loves working with Sharky in the Pyrotechnics lab big-time, while Kiddo #2 loves racing around with Hana (and is a movie trivia buff in the making)
Who is more likely to attend the PTA meetings? N/A - Hana would be dragged kicking and screaming to them and hate it.
Who cried the most at graduation? - N/A due to the Collapse, but Sharky might win this one. He certainly sheds a happy tear or two whenever the kids hand him gifts or show him cool things they’ve made, and any award they’d earn? Whoops, he’d be a goner.
Who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? - Hana’s up to bat first going through legal avenues, but if she can’t manage to wing it, Sharky’s ready to step up to the plate.
Cooking:
Who does the most cooking? - They both would be take-out junkies, but Hana can make most of the basics.
Who is the most picky in their food choice? - Neither, really. She’d tease Sharky about deviating any from his jerky-heavy diet, though.
Who does the grocery shopping? - Probably Hana, but she’d drag him along for it too (and they’d race carts in the parking lot)
How often do they bake desserts? - Not frequently, but Hana would every once in a blue moon attempt a cake or brownies, and post-Collapse Sharky tries really hard to find a way to make that happen.
Are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? - Meat, meat, meat.
Who is more likely to surprise the other(s) with an anniversary dinner? - Sharky, and although he’s not much of a cook, he’ll save her extra desserts for their anniversary week. Once they’re out he tries to go a little fancier, though, and doesn’t burn things to a crisp 60-70% of the time?
Who is more likely to suggest going out? - Sharky.
Who is more likely to burn the house down accidentally while cooking? - Sharky.
Chores:
Who cleans the room? - They’re both messy, so they try to take turns with chores.
Who is really against chores? - Sharky. He’s not thrilled with any of it, but puts up with it since
Who cleans up after the pets? - They don’t start off with pets, but Hana can’t help but feed a stray cat or two once they get to the surface, and gladly takes care of any messes they make.
Who is more likely to sweep everything under the rug? - Sharky, the sneak.
Who stresses the most when guests are coming over? - Both would usually be okay, but Hana does stress a bit more about cleaning when a certain someone John tends to visit.
Who found a dollar between the couch cushions while cleaning? - Sharky would probably find the dollar while trying to sweep things under it, to be honest. XD
Misc:
Who takes the longer showers/baths? - Hana. It’s where she can unwind, and it only gets longer if she has company (which she usually hopes for and Sharky 100% delivers on)
Who takes the dog out for a walk? - If moments with Boomer count, Hana would totally go jogging with him, and did a few times while heading out on patrol.
How often do they decorate the room/house for the holidays? - Hana’s a Halloween junkie, and loves throwing parties, so that's a must even when they don't have many actual decorations to hang. Sharky won't hesitate to help her find some prime picks, though, and can whip up some great ones in a jiffy.
What are their goals for the relationship? - Have the other’s back no matter what, and make the other the happiest they’ll ever be.
Who is most likely to sleep till noon? - Sharky.
Who plays the most pranks? - Sharky.

hello whaddup im back and i still need some sharky fix 🦈
how about a super fluffy fic where reader is feeling extra vulnerable, soft, and clingy? and somehow she just really missed barba even if he just went out that day to meet with some prospect firm partners, and he comes home to her wearing his harvard hoodie and hugging a big shark plushie 🥺
(here are some of the prompts, lol)
• “I might've slept napped with your shirt when you were gone.”
• “If my arms are your safe space, so that’s where you’ll be sleeping tonight.”
could really use a super fluff n sweet sharky fic rn 😭🥺💖 thank u !!! 🥰
ok that second prompt is worded so badly, I had to fix it lol.
---
You sat on your couch flipping through channels, not really focusing on any of the shows. You kept eyeing the door, willing it open. You checked your phone every five seconds, praying for it to buzz.
Finally, you heard a click on the lock of your front door, and it swung open as your boyfriend walked in.
“Baby!!” You practically leapt into his arms, ecstatic to see him.
“Ay, Sharky,” He stumbled backwards with a laugh. “You have got to stop doing that without warning, I’m an old man, I have brittle bones,”
“I mean, you said it,” You smiled at him with a tongue sticking out.
“Uh huh…” His eyes trailed down your body. “Is that my HARVARD hoodie?”
“I might've napped with it when you were gone,” You confessed.
“Oh God, Sharky..” He shook his head. “I can’t remember the last time I washed that thing, it probably smells awful,”
“It smells like you,” You gave yourself a hug, pulling it around your body. “So yes, it stinks like hell,” You giggled, prompting him to pick you up and tickle you.
“Ick, it smells like college,” He put you down with a grossed out face.
“What? It smells like coffee and cologne,” You sniffed the hoodie. “You smell like this literally all the time, Rafa,”
“I don’t wear that cologne anymore, that was my college cologne,”
“Oh good lord you have ‘college cologne’?” You rolled your eyes. “Wait…”
You sniffed it harder. “Baby is that….AXE body spray?!”
“It was the thing, okay?!” He defended himself as he walked to the bedroom, you quickly trailed behind him.
“I’m sure it was,” You nodded.
“Why are you up anyway Sharky?” He asked as he began to undress. “It’s almost 3 am, I thought you’d be snoring away by now,”
“I don’t SNORE!” You hit him.
“Don’t worry mi amor, it’s a cute snore,” He leaned over and kissed you as he unbuttoned his shirt and placed it neatly on the dresser.
“Well, you were taking a really long time with your date….”
“Investor,” He corrected you.
“Yeah your WOMAN investor,” You retorted a little harsher than you meant to.
“Carino…” He took off his belt and threw it on the bed before taking your face in his hands. “You know she has a thing for me, it was the only way to convince her to you know, give us money?”
“Yeah, I know...THAT’S what I was worried about,” You huffed with a roll of your eyes.
“My my my, the great Y/N is threatened by a bottom feeder?” He smirked as he resumed undressing, his pants were off next.
“I am not THREATENED,” You scoffed, to which Rafael gave you a knowing look. “I’m NOT,” You insisted.
“I just...I didn’t know how far you’d take it,” You looked down at the floor, embarrassed. Rafael stopped doing everything he was doing and took you in his arms, making you look at him.
“I would never, EVER do that to you, Sharky,” He looked at you seriously. “Never, in a million years,”
“...I know,” You looked down again. “I just...I don’t feel...confident, or in charge anymore, I don’t feel...safe,” You sighed.
“I always felt safe in the courtroom, somewhere I knew I belonged. Without that I am just flailing, and doubting everything,” You bit your lip and looked towards the window behind you, too embarrassed to look at Rafael. But you needed him to hear the last part.
“....Except when I’m with you,” You finally made yourself look into his piercing green irises.
You expected him to chuckle, or roll his eyes in amusement at your confession, but he didn’t. He didn’t make fun of you for feeling comfortable in a place most people felt uncomfortable. He didn’t tease you at the fact that you basically just recited a line from a rom com; He just took both of your hands and led you to the bed.
“....What are you doing?” You asked him with a confused expression.
“If my arms are your safe space, that’s where you’ll be sleeping tonight,” He smiled warmly at you as he wrapped his arms around your torso, pulling you as close into his body as he could. He was right; in this spot, in his arms, you felt totally and completely safe. Something you thought you’d never have.
Suddenly Rafael was moving away from you, pulling at the hoodie you still had on.
“What is happening right now?” You asked in a sarcastic tone.
“You can stay, but that hoodie is OUT,” He explained as he pulled off the hoodie, revealing that it was literally the only form of clothing you had on.
“Mmmmm, see now why would I want anything else besides these?” He took your breasts and fondled them in his hands.
“I don’t know, Big Spender Brenda had some pretty impressive ones,” You remarked as you resumed your little spoon position, Rafael’s arms now cradled your bosoms.
“Nahh, those are totally plastic,” He chuckled as he pressed a kiss to your cheek. “I like them au naturale,”
“Noted,” You smiled as you nodded off to sleep in your safe space, Rafael Barba’s embrace.

Fallen down/up the stairs?: "..... 😐 We're not talking about that right now. Next question."

Four Preferences
Smile or eyes?: "Eyes, they say more than you can hide."
Shorter or taller?: "I'm actually neutral on this one but I'll admit taller people catch my eye quicker."

Do you and your family get along?: "Oh yeah, we bicker, a lot, but reunions are never cancelled."
Would you say you have a messed up life?: "You can't see it but I'm laughing and crying at this question. I'll get through this. We all will."

Friends
Do you secretly hate one of your friends?: "Back home? No. Here? Absolutely not, you kidding? Nothing but respect for these guys. They're really fighting out here."
Do you consider all of your friends good friends?: "With recent events, no, and the ones I did are no longer seen that way either. Everything's just building up and collapsing lately but I have good allies."
Who is your best friend?: "Sharky, he's a ride or die man. I gotta give him props. We may not journey together all the time but he's always welcoming dare I say comforting. Him and Hurk Jr. and that's more than I can ask for at times like these."
Who knows everything about you?: "I don't know. I'd like to think it's Jess. She's seen me at my lowest and has heard me out but to be frank... It's Jacob. He's seen me at my primal, he's seen me do things I'm not even aware of. I can only imagine what I might've said when I wasn't fully there. In those cages and during those trials, those damn PowerPoints. He's not stupid, he'll dig up anything and everything he can to use against me if he hasn't already. Agh, all this thinking made my head hurt."

Cold hands (but no cold heart here)
I wanted to get in at least one semi-winter fic before the season was up, and while this grew beyond what I’d originally planned for it, you’ll hear no complaints from me.
Pairing: F!Dep x Sharky Boshaw (pre-ship, but they clearly didn’t get the memo)
Rating: T
Word Count: 3.7K
Link to AO3!
___
She wasn’t built for the cold. But with him, she didn’t have to be.
______________
She wasn’t built for the cold.
In Detroit she could’ve better prepped for it. Learned how to handle it like a reasonable human being if she’d been able to live there longer than a handful of years, but she hadn’t been that lucky. She went south. Traveled with her mother to warmer climates, and learned how to better weather heatwave after heatwave, rather than the odd sixty degree and below day.
It was miserable when those days hit. Burrowing into her jacket, Hana had tried to tough it out. Insist she was doing alright, when in reality she badly wanted a heavier coat or a sweater, and latched onto her warmer friends as a result.
She did not think this through before moving to Montana.
Montana. The land of mountains, snow, and temperatures that would make any warm-blooded southerner weep.
As the resident southern transplant, Hana had begged Sharky to set up a campfire when they found a good spot for one, and nearly wept at the heat coming off of it. Rubbing her hands together, she kept them over the campfire, and soaked in every last bit of warmth she possibly could.
“Geez, Dep. You really digging it that much?”
Mid-sigh, she closed her eyes, and smiled. “You have no idea. I’ve been suffering out here.”
“Suffering? It’s…what, kinda cool, but not like we’re heading into winter?”
When she opened her eyes, Sharky was still squinting over at her, his attention squarely on her hands, and she wiggled her fingers at him. If anything, that made him stare harder, and she snorted.
“My hands are telling me a different story.”
“Yeah, it’s real nice out right now. Prime weather for a cookout, or a little down-home barbeque.”
“If you’re a living furnace.” And to be fair, if anyone was, it’d be him. “Vouch for me here, Grace.”
The other woman didn’t speak up immediately. Focused on her gear, Grace glanced up only long enough to meet her gaze across the fire. “He’s right.”
Her mouth fell open. “What?”
“Though I guess if you wanted to-“ Sharky stopped, and turned towards Grace as well, his own face frozen in shock. “Say what, Grace?”
“Weather’s nice, won’t argue that. Think you’d like the excuse to have a barbeque all year round, though.”
“Well, not all year. You take a break to smoke meat, or roast it. Maybe fry it, though our bird bomb didn’t go over so well that one year, so I think we’re off the hook for that.” He tossed some jerky into his mouth, and chewed on it loudly as he mulled Grace’s words over. “…But you ain’t wrong.”
“The police reports aren’t either,” Hana said, biting her lip.
The bag of jerky Sharky had just held out to her was promptly withdrawn. “I thought we were friends, H.”
That was straight-up dirty pool. “Oh no, you aren’t-“
“’Cause this was my sharing bag. The kind you keep close by for a bro so they don’t go and starve, but all I’m hearing is law talk and paperwork over there.”
Holding it out over towards Grace, Hana gasped as the other woman took the bag.
“See?” Sharky said, gesturing between them. “Bros.”
Grace handed the bag to her right after, and one look at Sharky’s face sent her straight into a laughing fit. One whole wheezing, doubled-over-and-holding-her-sides fit, and by the time she was able to look over at him through her tears, he’d settled back in his seat with a scowl.
“Shark. Shark, hon, don’t be like that, okay?”
Wiping at her eyes, she gave him the bag. Nudged him in the arm with it as he groused, and knew she was pouting a little herself.
“Hey, I wasn’t trying to be mean. You know you’re the best bud around, right? And I’d buy you a truck-load of jerky, if I could. Hell, there has to be at least one cult supply truck full of this stuff driving around.”
He snuck a quick glance at her. “Yeah, I guess.”
“I’d hijack that truck for you.” She held up her fingers. “Two trucks.”
A small smile started to creep onto his face. “We might be looking at a three truck minimum here.”
“…How about four?”
“Four?” He lit right up, and she couldn’t help but do the same. “Shit, we might be looking at a deal there, shorty.”
She held out her hand, and after a quick shake, she felt the tension subside. Even managed to snag a piece of jerky as well – a probationary peace offering of sorts that Sharky was all too serious about as she took it – and they all settled into silence after that.
She returned her hands to the fire after a few minutes, however, savoring that flash of heat.
“Seriously?”
“No dice, hon. I could be holding these over a lava flow and they’d still find a way to be cold.”
“No shit?” Sharky took her hands in his, and his eyebrows flew up. “Okay, that’s…that’s pretty damn cold. Like I could hand you something only to come back to it being ice cold soon after.”
“Really now?” she asked, feeling her cheeks warm.
The brief brush with the handshake was nothing compared to this. Moving her hands around in his grip, she pressed her palms to his. Got as much contact as she was able to, and wished the gloves weren’t between them.
“Yeah, you’re like the best portable fridge. Perfect for chilling with, doesn’t mind travel, so you can roll out and go whenever you want, and…is just all-around super cool like that.“
His hands stayed clasped around hers, both absurdly warm as they chased off the chill her fingerless gloves did jack to protect against. But when he started rubbing them lightly, somehow managing to warm the rest of her in the process, she cleared her throat.
“Super cool?”
“Yeah, super cool,” he replied, without batting an eye. “Ain’t that right, Grace?”
The rasp of a laugh from nearby made Hana’s eyes snap right to her. But it was too late. Her face was burning with a vengeance, and one look at their linked hands only made it ten times worse.
Tugging her hands away, Hana hopped up. “Think we’re due for a perimeter check.”
“What? We just did one ten minutes ago-“
She grabbed her rifle and made a beeline straight for the bushes.
She heard him calling after her, only a few feet out as she kept on going, and hoped like hell that by the time he caught up, she’d be back to normal.
Because this? This was starting to get a little ridiculous.
---
Heading north, the three kept on moving until the sun dipped low in the sky. That meant needing a place to set up camp, and for once their luck seemed to be looking up.
Up ahead, she’d caught the place with her binoculars. It was a smaller house, one that showed some signs of damage on the outside, but hadn’t been torched. While approaching it, Grace guided them forward. Motioned for them to stay quiet as they moved, keeping their weapons at the ready.
That lasted all of five minutes when Hana climbed through the open window only to hear something shatter nearby.
Creeping into what appeared to be the living room, she groaned when she spotted Sharky messing around with a ceramic figurine. Trying to fit the head of it back onto its torso, he fumbled at it, only to drop it when he caught her eye.
Jabbing a finger towards the other end of the house, she didn’t say a thing. Just pointed as Sharky gave her a sheepish look, and urged him to keep moving.
In the end, it was clear.
That made relief sink right into her, and once the three met up back in the living room, they quickly hashed out a plan for the night. Shifts, where to sleep, and noting any points of entry.
All points but the first they knocked out in less than thirty minutes. But the minute that was done, before Sharky could say a single word, she held up her hands and issued a challenge.
Rock, paper, scissors.
Their usual go-to to settle any and all shift arguments, and after the last few nights of peace, she’d seen the glint in his eye. He’d been biding his time, waiting to see if she’d try to call dibs early. When she didn’t, and he failed to call it in turn, they both dove right in with their first set of choices.
Midway through her and Sharky’s second round, however, Grace intervened. “We doing this again?”
“Yes,” Hana said, matching Sharky’s paper with her own. “Well, the two of us are, because we’ll never be able to get shift assignments down otherwise, but if you want in, winner’ll gladly take you on.”
Things grew quiet after that. The only sound around coming from them slapping their hands together, both matching their picks and swearing in the process.
Out of the corner of her eye, however, she noticed Grace’s tapping foot. Chancing a look her way, Hana took in her crossed arms and drawn expression, and felt her motions begin to slow down until they reached a complete halt.
Grace shook her head. “Sharky? Take first.”
He stopped, his scissors outclassed by the rock Hana was wielding, and groaned. “Seriously?”
“I get what you two are trying at, but we don’t have time to waste doing this. You want second?”
Sharky frowned, but after thinking it over shook his head. “Nah, I’ll do it. Least it’ll get it out of the way so I can snag some Zs after.”
“Well, if he’s doing first, I’ll take second.”
“Third it is.” Grace tilted her head towards Hana. “You two really want to do this every time?”
“Not every time,” she said, placing her hands on her hips. “But if I call dibs first, that’s non-negotiable.”
“Which ain’t cool at all, Dep,” Sharky muttered.
“You’ve done it too! Sometimes before we’ve even left the damn car to check to see if it’s even worth staying at a place.”
“Only ‘cause I know you’ll spring it on me later. Taking advantage of the fact that I’m set on doing the max amount of boogying only for you to call it right when it’s getting good? That’s just low.”
He was miffed. Genuinely miffed at her over this, and she gaped at him. “You aren’t serious.”
“Uh, I’m pretty fucking serious. ‘Specially when it means you’re the one getting the drop on some cool shit happening, having all the badass moments anyone could ever ask for, and I’m in the next room doing nothing, and I can’t even take my pants off-“
“You’re sleeping. People need to do that.”
“But I wanna have your back on that. Maybe even get in some sweet back to back action too, before any of the Peggies give us the runaround, ‘cause you know we’d kick ass at it.”
“Hon, I mean it. You really aren’t missing out on much.”
She didn’t know what face he was making, but knew the frustration she gave off wasn’t helping in the slightest.
“Jesus, Shark. It’s not like I always win these things! I mean, you’re the reason why we have the whole two out of three thing going to begin with, and-“
Hana stopped.
Noticing the sudden Grace-shaped gap in the room, she took a quick look around and couldn’t find a single trace of her.
“…We weren’t that bad, were we?” Hana asked, shooting Sharky a nervous glance.
“Nah, didn’t think we were. Would’ve won this one, though.”
“Oh? You really think so?”
“Wouldn’t even need two out of three,” he said, smirking right at her. “I’d get that shit in one. Right out the gate.”
She narrowed her eyes. When she made no move to restart the game, Sharky waggled his eyebrows at her, and she felt her fingers twitch.
“Don’t tempt me, Boshaw.”
“You know you wanna.” With that tone he’d clearly missed the memo. “I’ll trade you if you win. Give you all of the dibs you could ever want or call. All first, no contest.”
Good thing she was set on ignoring it too. “None?”
“Not a single one, scout’s honor,” he said, holding up a hand. “Not that I got through much of the whole badge-earning business and shit, but learning to start fires, chop wood, and tie a rope’s enough to give me a free pass to use that once. Maybe even twice.”
Hana whipped out her hands, setting her fist in her open palm, and his face lit up in delight.
Their choices came quick, hers lingering a beat behind as she watched him. Taken more than a little by the grin he was wearing, she slapped down the first thing that popped into her mind.
Paper.
The V Sharky made with his fingers hovered in front of him as he snipped the air, and she dug her teeth right into her lip.
“Fuck.”
“Better luck next time, Dep.”
---
It wasn’t a large house, so having to cover one floor wasn’t tough.
The tough part all came down to settling in, reinforcing both the front and rear entrances, making sure their weapons were close enough to grab – and in her case, not freezing to death. But that was more of a personal problem than anything else.
Much as she missed the campfire from the morning, there was no point in starting one nearby. Not with the lack of trees offering cover, and the odds of the fire being caught by anyone traveling on the nearby road.
Blankets were set down in one of the rooms in the back, and after staking a claim on the warmest quilt in the house, Hana took up a spot near Grace, wished Sharky luck, and tried to sleep. That was the hardest part by far. Telling her body that it was okay to relax, and to close her eyes and ignore every small little sound, while repeating that pledge over and over.
Scraping together an hour or two of sleep was better than nothing, but it was adding up. She’d been sluggish before, and her stint on Nick’s couch should’ve been a major wake up call, but that didn’t shut her brain up. That didn’t make the tension settle out whenever a nearby twig was snapped.
So, she laid there. Forced her eyes to stay shut, and tightened her fingers in the blanket as the seconds ticked by.
When she’d been given a light shake to wake her up, she jolted. With bleary eyes she’d taken in her surroundings before flashing Sharky a thumbs up, and braced herself for the world outside of her mini cocoon.
Leaving that warmth sucked, but she adjusted fast. This was a better use of her time for now, letting her pour the nervous energy into something that kept her moving. Kept her thinking as she settled outside, and lit up a cigarette.
Time passed. Hana burned through one cigarette, then two, watching and waiting as the clouds drifted by overhead. Without the stars or the moon, she had nothing to track. Only kept her eyes out for any lights in the distance, hoping that if anyone was going to come by to clear this place out they’d have already done it.
Pacing around, she stuck close. Felt an actual shiver run through her as she crouched down low so she could get proper cover, and rubbed her hands together. Moving helped. Burned a little energy from the endless well her nerves tried to supply her with, and stored the rest just in case she actually needed it.
The grass swayed with the wind, drawing her eye as it moved, and she drew in an unsteady breath. Checking the watch she’d been passed, she swiped at the face of it with her thumb as the seconds counted up to sixty, then began all over again.
Tick, tick, tick.
Traveling in a circle, she idly noted the position of the hands before going back to the sky. Took another set of puffs off of her cigarette, waited, then looked back down at the watch when she’d finished counting the stars hanging up above her head.
Tapping at the face with her finger, she squinted at it closely and felt her eyes widen.
Ten past. Ten minutes past when she was supposed to get Grace, and at least ten minutes spent zoning out, registering nothing when a group could’ve been closing in on them.
Rubbing at her face, she gave the outside one last scan, and made her way back inside.
It didn’t take much to rouse Grace. Just a few words spoken close to her side – never a shake, or a touch – and Grace gave her a quick glance before getting up.
Trouble?
Hana shook her head at the unspoken question. Nope, none to speak of.
With that answered, Grace took her rifle, geared up after taking the offered watch, and disappeared through the doorway.
Knowing Grace was watching them now, the tension started to ebb away. Bled right out as Hana set her things to the side, and dragged the blanket with her, burrowing back down into her spot from before.
But now she was back to square one.
Blinking against the dark, she sighed. Flopped over, testing the position to see if it’d work, only to feel everything curl under her wrong. She rolled over, giving the blanket a harsh pull to re-wrap it around her, and huffed when it didn’t feel any more comfortable than before.
Rolling back over, she heard something move nearby. Lifting her head, she saw Sharky wind his arms tighter around himself, as his snoring tapered off. He didn’t stay still for long, however. It was a small tremor, but it ran through him as he laid there, the sheet he’d picked too thin to do much to help.
Scooting closer to him, she tugged out the edge of her blanket, and tossed it towards him.
He started when the heavier material hit. But after a second of moving around and blinking at her, he shucked the sheet off and scooted in so he could tuck the blanket around himself too.
“Hands still cold, Dep?” He’d half-mumbled the words, not awake enough to really jump up and go, but was responding to her at the moment.
Hana made a face, feeling her fingertips tingle until Sharky reached over and tucked one hand against his side. His hoodie had ridden up enough for her to touch his skin directly, and it was so damn warm she sighed in relief instantly.
He flinched at the contact, though. “Yeah, still cold.”
“Not like Montana’s decided to get any warmer,” she shot, but kept her voice low.
His small smile grew, and he wiggled closer so her arm wasn’t hanging in the air between them. That put him close enough now to have it tucked along his side, covered by both his hoodie and the extra blanket she’d tossed over him.
Maybe a foot was between them at best, but she wasn’t checking. Or really bothered by it either. Just amused at how they’d gone from sleeping within the general vicinity of each other to practically sharing the same space. A few added inches would turn her pillow into their pillow, and even now his cheek was practically resting on it.
And with her hand still up his shirt, at that. He’d initiated the contact, not bothered in the slightest by any of it, and she almost wanted to laugh.
Seriously, is he just that damn-
No.
No, she didn’t need any of her thoughts going in that direction right now. That wasn’t going to help in the slightest.
So, she focused on him instead. Watched Sharky’s face as she traced her fingers along his side, watching his nose twitch as he breathed. Not quite snoring like he’d done before, but breathing deep. Slow, and steady with each one, even as her hand slid to his lower back.
That got a hum out of him. The sound pleasant in a way that made her face flush, and she quickly shifted her hand back into place.
The movement made his brows furrow, however, and he stretched. “Mmm, how you doing now?”
Pinching her lips shut, Hana swallowed the lump that had found its way to her throat.
He cracked open his eyes to look at her, and she considered taking her hand back, but couldn’t do it. Not when he really was every bit as warm as she wished she was.
“Better,” she said, half-rasping at him. “Easy to say when I’ve got my own portable space heater next to me, though.”
Sharky tapped a finger against his forehead. “See? I know my shit. Also remembered you saying your hands get cold easy, so…”
Chewing on her lip, she gave him a shy smile. “Still got one free, you know.”
“Got what free?”
“A hand.” Bringing her other arm out from under her pillow, she gave him a small wave. “Missing one there, bud.”
“Aw, shit,” he said, concern crossing him. “Let me get right on that.”
Taking her other hand in his, he held it close to his chest. Close enough for her to splay her fingers out over it if she wanted to. But when his thumb brushed the back of her hand, she kept it in his. Focused on the soft, smooth strokes moving back and forth over her skin as he held her, his grip relaxed around it.
“Don’t wanna fail you now. Leaving you all cold and bothered like that? Make me one shitty-ass compadre if I did.”
Her face was warm when she turned it into her pillow. Almost hopelessly so as she peered over at him, catching the pout he was wearing. It was ridiculous and wonderful, and only he’d find a way to pull it off.
“Shark, I don’t think you could be shitty if you tried.”
Over his hoodie, she didn’t feel much, but she imagined she’d feel his heartbeat if he wasn’t wearing it. Beating steady under her fingertips, and comforting in its own right. The whole of him even warmer than he already was this close to her, and she wanted to wrap herself up in every inch of it.
Her eyelids started to droop, closing more with each blink, and she turned her hand so she could try to twine her fingers with his.
They weren’t aligned right, but she felt him shift too. Moving to give her just enough space to wind them together, and hold on tight.
