Everything hurts.

Pac groans in pain as he is downed again. How many times has he been killed now, eight times? Ten? Twelve? He’s not sure– and frankly, he doesn’t care anymore. He just wants those fucking eye worker things to be gone.

Someone is picking him up– Pac’s not sure who it is. Everything is so blurry, so hazy. He remembers thanking them as he stands on his legs, hissing when the bruises on the stump of his prosthetic leg ache. He hears more screaming, more fighting, he thinks he heard the sound of someone dying, but he’s not sure of who.

Everything is too much.

“WHAT?!”

Pac turns around, stumbling when he hears Bagi’s broken voice. What happened? His head is spinning, and everything seems to come in and out of focus.

“Who did that?!” She screams, a rage in her voice Pac has never heard come from her. “WHO DID THAT?!”

He’s confused– what happened? He grabs his comm with shaking hands, thinking something was said in chat.

Empanada is bleeding.

Empanada was slain.

What.

He freezes. His heart stops, mind going quiet as gunshots and yells overlap. But– But Empanada was right here. She was behind him, running away with her frying pan in her hands when Pac was downed. How could she be dead? Not again, not again, not again.

“No, no, no...” He mumbles, watching as Bagi and Fit push the worker with their scythes and corners it. The male stumbles towards the worker, hands clenched into fists. He has nothing– those fuckers destroyed his home, destroyed his armour and weapons, took away one of Em’s lives...

He punches, because that’s all he can do.

He punches with as much strength he can muster (which isn’t a lot), mindful to not get between it and Bagi. He keeps punching, again and again and again because how dare they?! How DARE they hurt his family.

Then Bagi yells.

“YOU KILLED EMPANADA, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!” She screams, stabbing the worker with her scythe and downing it. “YOU PIECE OF SHIT!”

Pac stumbles back, freezing.

He’s heard that tone before, accompanied by wide, crazy blue eyes and blodied, sharp fangs.

He tries to breathe, but his body feels out of his control. He gets goosebumps as Bagi screams and yells with grief and anger in her voice as she stabs the worker over, and over, and over, and over. Fit stands back, hand going white by the grip he has on his scythe and a mix of anger and guilt on his face.

At some point, the body of the Eye Worker stumbles towards his frozen body. Bagi, in her fit of rage, doesn't see him and continues stabbing the Worker. Pac feels a flash of pain in his abdomen, and he collapses, downed once again but this time by Bagi. He doesn’t dare to move or to speak– he needs to be as quiet and still as he can if he wants to live, to survive.

He starts to get picked up by someone, but all Pac can manage to say is that they can leave him, he’s fine. He gets picked up, of course, but all he can do is stand there, paralized, as Bagi continues her rampage on the eye worker.

Everything hurts, and all he can do is watch.

Where does Laura's fixation on nuns come from? Seems to be a recurring motif in artwork and fiction you have made for her. Is this intentional? 👀

90% intentional! The rest 10% is honestly just vibes.

The main reason is because of Laura's relationship with religion and sexuality.

She was raised in a Christian household and was extremely devout as a human, and planned to keep her chastity intact even if she was the eldest daughter (already making her kind of an exception in the traditional family dynamic). It stemmed half from her being a lesbian (and not knowing that that was a thing) and half from just her faith.

As for her fixation with nuns specifically, it's mostly because of her trauma.

Having been abused sexually by men of faith and top that with her already repressed sexuality, when she gave in to her lycanthropy she basically let go of all her inhibitions and previous anxieties. It also resulted in her being hypersexual in general, and her drinking despite not being able to get drunk is also an idea of that hedonistic, feral attitude.

She sees sex as a power play or a pastime. It's not meaningful in any way to her anymore. It's not about love, it's not about intimacy. But to a Christian woman? Oh it is quite meaningful.

When she sleeps with nuns (or married women also), she uses it as a way to insult God and to mock their faith and human societal values. She sullies the pure just like how she was sullied, not by force but my seduction, making them willingly give in to her.

She sees nuns as the pinnacle of faith and chastity in women, so of course they'd catch her attention. It's also a form of self-loathing in a way, like hurting and manipulating the innocent woman (Laura could've easily become a nun in her human life) she used to be over and over again for no reason other than boredom.

It's her coming back to her trauma again and again in a way where she is in control this time, infiltrating and seeping through the cracks to not cause an uproar because those incidents will most likely be swept under the rug like how many religious groups will do just to save face in a place where God sees all.

It's the idea of a contrast; a pure, devout virgin and a feral, depraved creature, one living in the outskirts of society and the other outside of it, both suspected because of misogyny and how they don't adhere to gender roles in the most traditional sense of the word.

There is an excellent video essay about nuns (inspired by The Nun (2018)) that I highly recommend you guys check out, it's less than 10 minutes and extremely informative. I also recommend checking out the creator's other videos because they are amazing.

okay, im going to rant about soldier, poet, king because PEOPLE ARE STILL MISINTERPRETING IT and im mad about it.

Obligatory disclaimer: Mentions of Christianity, obviously. Also, I myself am not a Christian. However, I REALLY like the Oh Hellos. If you couldn't tell.

Soldier, Poet, King is the tenth song of the Dear Wormwood album by The Oh Hellos. Dear Wormwood is heavily inspired by CS Lewis (hence the title, which comes from the Screwtape Letters.) The story of the album is about an abusive relationship, which uses aspects of their inspirations as metaphors for the overarching narrative.

Soldier, Poet, King has aspects that are clearly drawn from the bible, yes. We all know this. Everyone who has ever done a surface level search of the lyrics on Genius can tell you this. Congrats, you know a basic aspect of The Oh Hellos.

However, if you leave it at that, you are just ignoring the literal message of the song. Aside from the people everyone and their mother complains about ("omg i can't believe this is abt jesus :(( i can't use this song for my blorbos anymore :((("), there's also a really annoying subsection of people who are like this:

THEY DIDN'T DO THIS. Let me break down the soldier verse for you because this is making me so mad.

Crazy how this tiny ass verse got misinterpreted that badly, btw. Anyways. This verse has direct references that come from THE BIBLE.

Revelations 1:16- "In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and this face was like the sun shining in full strength."

Revelations 19:15- "From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty."

Because of these, I'D ARGUE THAT JESUS IS MENTIONED TO HAVE A SWORD MULTIPLE TIMES, ACTUALLY. Given, it's metaphorical most of the time, but come on now. Also, it's not saying he's a literal soldier in the lyrics. I'd argue that it's more meant to imply a reform, especially consider the next verse is:

There will come a poet

Whose weapon is His word

He will slay you with His tongue, oh lei oh lai oh Lord

Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord

He will slay you with His tongue, oh lei oh lai oh Lord

If his weapon is his word, does this not imply that the sword from the previous verse is metaphorical? If he's slaying with his tongue, doesn't that mean that he's "tearing your city down" with his fucking words? If we're to say that this song is about a singular person, which it is (it's using jesus as an analogy for the protagonist), then these lyrics have overlap, and his SWORD is his WORDS. NOT A LITERAL SWORD.

Anyways, rant concluded.

TLDR; Jesus is an analogy for the protagonist of the Dear Wormwood album, the "sword" referenced in the first verse and his "word" referenced in the second verse are the same thing, which has biblical basis, especially in Revelations.
