Great Big Good Omens Graphic Novel Update
AKA A Visit From Bildad the Shuhite.
The past year or so has been one long visit from this guy, whereupon he smiteth my goats and burneth my crops, woe unto the woeful cartoonist.
Gaze upon the horror of Bildad the Shuhite.
Tumblr media
You kind of have to be a Good Omens fan to get this joke, but trust me, it's hilarious.
Anyway, as a long time Good Omens novel fan, you may imagine how thrilled I was to get picked to adapt the graphic novel.
 Go me!
Tumblr media
This is quite a task, I have to say, especially since I was originally going to just draw (and color) it, but I ended up writing the adaptation as well. Tricky to fit a 400 page novel into a 160-ish page graphic novel, especially when so much of the humor is dependent on the language, and not necessarily on the visuals.
Not complainin', just sayin'.
Anyway, I started out the gate like a herd of turtles, because  right away I got COVID which knocked me on my butt.
And COVID brain fog? That's a thing. I already struggle with brain fog due to autoimmune disease, and COVID made it worse.
Not complainin' just sayin'.
This set a few of the assignments on my plate back, which pushed starting Good Omens back.
But hey, big fat lead time! No worries!
Then my computer crawled toward the grave.
My trusty MAC Pro Tower was nearly 15 years old when its sturdy heart ground to a near-halt with daily crashes. I finally got around to doing some diagnostics; some of its little brain actions were at 5% functionality. I had no reliable backups.
There are so many issues with getting a new computer when you haven't had a new computer or peripherals in nearly fifteen years and all of your software, including your Photoshop program is fifteen years old.
At the time, I was still on rural internet...which means dial-up speed.
Tumblr media
Whatever you have for internet in the city, roll that clock back to about 2001.
That's what I had. I not only had to replace almost all of my hardware but I had to load and update all programs at dial-up speed.
Welcome to my gigabyte hell.
The entire process of replacing the equipment and programs took weeks and then I had to relearn all the software.
All of this was super expensive in terms of money and time cost.
But I was not daunted! Nosirree!
I still had a huge lead time! I can do anything! I have an iron will!
And boy, howdy, I was going to need it.
At about the same time, a big fatcat quadrillionaire client who had hired me years ago to develop a big, major transmedia project for which I was paid almost entirely in stock, went bankrupt leaving everyone holding the bag, and taking a huge chunk of my future retirement fund with it.
I wrote a very snarky almost hilarious Patreon post about it, but am not entirely in a position to speak freely because I don't want to get sued. Even though I had to go to court over it, (and I had to do that over Zoom at dial-up speed,) I'm pretty sure I'll never get anything out of this drama, and neither will anyone else involved, except millionaire dude and his buddies who all walked away with huge multi-million dollar bonuses weeks before they declared bankruptcy, all the while claiming they would not declare bankruptcy.
Even the accountant got $250,000 a month to shut down the business, while creators got nothing.
That in itself was enough drama for the year, but we were only at February by that point, and with all those months left, 2023 had a lot more to throw at me.
Fresh from my return from my Society of Illustrators show, and a lovely time at MOCCA, it was time to face practical medical issues, health updates, screening, and the like. I did my adult duty and then went back to work hoping for no news, but still had a weird feeling there would be news.
Tumblr media
I know everyone says that, but I mean it. I had a bad feeling.
Then there was news.
I was called back for tests and more tests. This took weeks. The ubiquitous biopsy looked, even to me staring at the screen in real time, like bad news.
It also hurt like a mofo after the anesthesia wore off. I wasn't expecting that.
Then I got the official bad news.
Cancer which runs in my family finally got me. Frankly, I was surprised I didn't get it sooner.
Stage 0, and treatment would likely be fast and complication-free. Face the peril, get it over with, and get back to work.
I requested surgery months in the future so I could finish Good Omens first, but my doc convinced me the risk of waiting was too great. Get it done now.
"You're really healthy," my doc said. Despite an auto-immune issue which plagues me, I am way healthier than the average schmoe of late middle age. She informed me I would not even need any chemo or radiation if I took care of this now.
Tumblr media
So I canceled my appearance at San Diego Comic Con. I did not inform the Good Omens team of my issues right away, thinking this would not interfere with my work schedule, but I did contact my agent to inform her of the issue. I also contacted a lawyer to rewrite my will and make sure the team had access to my digital files in case there were complications.
Then I got back to work, and hoped for the best.
Eff this guy.
Tumblr media
Before I could even plant my carcass on the surgery table, I got a massive case of ocular shingles.
I didn't even know there was such a thing.
There I was, minding my own business. I go to bed one night with a scratchy eye, and by 4 PM the next day, I was in the emergency room being told if I didn't get immediate specialist treatment, I was in big trouble.
I got transferred to another hospital and got all the scary details, with the extra horrid news that I could not possibly have cancer surgery until I was free of shingles, and if I did not follow a rather brutal treatment procedure - which meant super-painful  eye drops every half hour, twenty-four hours a day and daily hospital treatment - I could lose the eye entirely, or be blinded, or best case scenario, get permanent eye damage.
What was even funnier (yeah, hilarity) is the drops are so toxic if you don't use the medication just right, you can go blind anyway.
Hi Ho.
Ulcer is on the right. That big green blob.
Tumblr media
I had just finished telling my cancer surgeon I did not even really care about getting cancer, was happy it was just stage zero, had no issues with scarring, wanted no reconstruction, all I cared about was my work.
Just cut it out and get me back to work.
And now I wondered if I was going to lose my ability to work anyway.
Shingles often accompanies cancer because of the stress on the immune system, and yeah, it's not pretty. This is me looking like all heck after I started to get better.
Tumblr media
The first couple of weeks were pretty demoralizing as I expected a straight trajectory to wellness. But it was up and down all the way.
Some days I could not see out of either eye at all. The swelling was so bad that I had to reach around to my good eye to prop the lid open. Light sensitivity made seeing out of either eye almost impossible. Outdoors, even with sunglasses, I had to be led around by the hand.
I had an amazing doctor. I meticulously followed his instructions, and I think he was surprised I did. The treatment is really difficult, and if you don't do it just right no matter how painful it gets, you will be sorry.
To my amazement, after about a month, my doctor informed me I had no vision loss in the eye at all. "This never happens," he said.
I'd spent a couple of weeks there trying to learn to draw in the near-dark with one eye, and in the end, I got all my sight back.
I could no longer wear contact lenses (I don't really wear them anyway, unless I'm going to the movies,) would need hard core sun protection for awhile, and the neuralgia and sun sensitivity were likely to linger. But I could get back to work.
I have never been more grateful in my life.
Neuralgia sucks, by the way, I'm still dealing with it months later.
Anyway, I decided to finally go ahead and tell the Good Omens team what was going on, especially since this was all happening around the time the Kickstarter was gearing up.
Now that I was sure I'd passed the eye peril, and my surgery for Stage 0 was going to be no big deal, I figured all was a go. I was still pretty uncomfortable and weak, and my ideal deadline was blown, but with the book not coming out for more than a year, all would be OK. I quit a bunch of jobs I had lined up to start after Good Omens, since the project was going to run far longer than I'd planned.
Everybody on the team was super-nice, and I was pretty optimistic at this time. But work was going pretty slow during, as you may imagine.
But again...lots of lead time still left, go me.
Then I finally got my surgery.
Which was not as happy an experience as I had been hoping for.
My family said the doc came out of the operating room looking like she'd been pulled backwards through a pipe, She informed them the tumor which looked tiny on the scan was "...huge and her insides are a mess."
Which was super not fun news.
Eff this guy.
Tumblr media
The tumor was hiding behind some dense tissue and cysts. After more tests, it was determined I'd need another surgery and was going to have to get further treatments after all.
The biopsy had been really painful, but the discomfort was gone after about a week, so no biggee. The second surgery was, weirdly, not as painful as the biopsy, but the fatigue was big time.
By then, the Good Omens Kickstarter had about run its course, and the record-breaker was both gratifying and a source of immense social pressure.
Tumblr media
I'd already turned most of my social media over to an assistant, and I'm glad I did.
But the next surgery was what really kicked me on my keister.
Tumblr media
All in all, they took out an area the size of a baseball. It was  hard to move and wiped me out for weeks and weeks. I could not take care of myself. I'd begun losing hair by this time anyway, and finally just lopped it off since it was too heavy for me to care for myself. The cut hides the bald spots pretty well.
After about a month, I got the go-ahead to travel to my show at the San Diego Comic Con Museum (which is running until the first week of April, BTW). I was very happy I had enough energy to do it. But as soon as I got back, I had to return to treatment.
Since I live way out in the country, going into the city to various hospitals and pharmacies was a real challenge. I made more than 100 trips last year, and a drive to the compounding pharmacy which produced the specialist eye medicine I could not get anywhere else was six hours alone.
Naturally, I wasn't getting anything done during this time.
But at least my main hospital is super swank.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The oncology treatment went smoothly, until it didn't. The feels don't hit you until the end. By then I was flattened.
So flattened that I was too weak to control myself, fell over, and smashed my face into some equipment.
Tumblr media
Nearly tore off my damn nostril.
Eff this guy.
Tumblr media
Anyway, it was a bad year.
Here's what went right.
I have a good health insurance policy. The final tally on my health care costs ended up being about $150,000. I paid about 18% of that, including insurance. I had a high deductible and some experimental medicine insurance didn't cover. I had savings,  enough to cover the months I wasn't working, and my Patreon is also very supportive. So you didn't see me running a Gofundme or anything.
Thanks to everyone who ever bought one of my books.
No, none of that money was Good Omens Kickstarter money. I won't get most of my pay on that for months, which is just as well because it kept my taxes lower last year when I needed a break.
So, yay.
My nose is nearly healed. I opted out of plastic surgery, and it just sealed up by itself. I'll never be ready for my closeup, but who the hell cares.
I got to ring the bell.
Tumblr media
I had a very, VERY hard time getting back to work, especially with regard to focus and concentration. My work hours dropped by over 2/3. I was so fractured and weak, time kept slipping away while I sat in the studio like a zombie. Most of the last six months were a wash.
I assumed focus issues were due (in part) to stress, so sought counseling. This seemed like a good idea at first, but when the counselor asked me to detail my issues with anxiety, I spent two weeks doing just that and getting way more anxious, which was not helpful.
After that I went EFF THIS NOISE, I want practical tools, not touchy feelies (no judgment on people who need touchy-feelies, I need a pragmatic solution and I need it now,) so tried using the body doubling focus group technique for concentration and deep work.
Within two weeks, I returned to normal work hours.
I got rural broadband, jumping me from dial up speed to 1 GB per second.
It's a miracle.
Tumblr media
Massive doses of Vitamin D3 and K2. Yay.
The new computer works great.
The Kickstarter did so well, we got to expand the graphic novel to 200 pages. Double yay.
I'm running late, but everyone on the Good Omens team is super supportive. I don't know if I am going to make the book late or not, but if I do, well, it surely wasn't on purpose, and it won't be super late anyway. I still have months of lead time left.
I used to be something of a social media addict, but now I hardly ever even look at it, haven't been directly on some sites in over a year, and no longer miss it. It used to seem important and now doesn't.
More time for real life.
While I think the last year aged me about twenty years, I actually like me better with short hair. I'm keeping it.
Tumblr media
OK. Rough year.
Not complainin', just sayin'.
Back to work on The Book.
Tumblr media
And only a day left to vote for Good Omens, Neil Gaiman, and Sandman in the Comicscene Awards. Thanks.

Sony RX100 VII Thoughts After Two Months
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PROS:
Stacked sensors are the future. Well, technically the present considering that Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, and OM Systems all use stacked sensors in their top of the line cameras. Either way, finally getting to experience shooting with one on a daily basis has made me want one in pretty much any camera going forward. The benefits are twofold: Not only do you get shutter speeds up to 20 frames per second, and without a mechanical shutter flipping in the way obscuring your view in between shots, but you also get no rolling shutter while doing it. Pretty much every Sony camera can shoot 10 fps bursts with the silent shutter, but any movement can give you a jello-like effect since the sensor reads out so slow on non-stacked cameras. The only con, at least on this camera, is that you can’t shoot flash at higher than 1/100 with the electronic shutter. That’s still plenty fast for a lot of stuff, but well below the 1/2000 you get when shooting the mechanical shutter.
The fast frame rate wouldn’t make much of a difference if the camera was bad at autofocusing, but this camera is great at it. It has a lot of the same fancy focusing stuff that my full frame Sony has like human/animal eye autofocus and all the tracking modes I’m used to. It actually makes the camera pretty solid for wildlife if you can get close enough at the 200mm end.
Speaking of that, the 24-200mm equivalent is a great range, and one that I missed a lot since I traded away my Tamron 28-200 to help cover the cost of my A7RIV. The small size and extra 4mm on the wide end actually makes it even more convenient than that Tamron.
Aside from covering a broader range than the 24-70 equivalent lens from the older RX100 cameras, this lens also seems noticeably sharper. The last RX100 model I had, the Mk. IV, just didn’t seem as crispy as this lens is.
It has a touchscreen! It’s wild to think that the previous RX100 cameras I owned didn’t have this basic ass feature, but Sony was very late in putting touch screens in their cameras. Ironically, I don’t really use it in this one because the AF is good enough that I can just do focus and recompose with tracking.
Tumblr media
CONS:
It’s still only a 1” style sensor so high ISO isn’t the cameras strong suit. Programs like DXO PureRAW help a lot and let you get somewhat usable images at ISO 6400 in a pinch, but you’re kinda pushing things at that point.
While the lens is sharper and covers a wider range than the older models, it’s also significantly slower. At 24mm equivalent it’s already at f/2.8 where the old cameras were f/1.8. It’s f/3.2 at 25mm, f/3.5 at 33mm, and f/4 at 40mm. From 109mm to 200mm you’re at f/4.5. The relative slowness of the lens combined with the small sensor means that this can struggle getting quality images in low light without a tripod or something.
No USB-C. My Fuji, Ricoh, and larger Sony all have USB-C charging, which is amazingly convenient when traveling. I haven’t really gone anywhere with this camera yet, but having to account for a micro USB cable is annoying since pretty much everything aside from my iPhone uses USB-C.
It’s expensive. Just like my Mk III and Mk IV I got it used so it was cheaper than retail, but the copy I got cost about twice what I paid for the previous models.
Start up time is just a tad bit slower than I’d like. The GRIII and X100V both beat it that regards, albeit those aren’t zoom lens so I have to cut the Sony some slack.

I love it when I open a bill expecting the usual $15 copay to find I owe $376 and then when I call the clinic they say 'oh actually it says here that it's $542' and when I ask them why, I get some incomprehensible jargon about my insurance and deductibles. All I understand is that my insurance already costs me over $200/month and so you'd think they'd have the decency to cover my PHONE APPOINTMENTS. that's right, I had to pay over 500 bucks for fucking. A handful of 5 to 10 min long video chats. Then I open another bill to find an additional $160, literally the FIRST bill I've gotten from this other place, and it's got a late fee tacked onto it. So yah I just said goodbye to seven hundred dollars
"Wow Sen, you must be Mr. moneybags with such shitty and expensive insurance-" WRONG. I MAKE LESS THAN 20 BUCKS AN HOUR. IM SINGLE AND I LIVE ALONE in an apartment that costs WAY more than a third of my fuckjgn income. But sure, who gives a shit, i make JUST over the bare bones tiniest minimum to get the cool, cheapo insurance so why not charge me Moneybags prices
Literally I've been crying all fucking afternoon, I'm so fucking upset. Like I've been trying to visualize a day in the near future when maybe i can get the top surgery I want so bad but hey, it's just not gonna fucking happen. Not unless an angel fucking swoops down and drops 10k in my lap. Commissions have been nice, it's been a cute little supplement to my income, but ALLLL the commissions I've done so far don't even account for half of the money that flew out of my wallet just now
Right and they expect me to quit smoking for this surgery too? Lmfao nicotine is the only thing keeping me from just fucking ending it

Week 12 Blog
A Good Wife, Escaping The Life I Never Chose, By Samra Zafar
Pages read: 30
Total Pages Read: 160
Word count: 360
Summary:(125)
Samra experienced the first ever physical violent encounter with Ahmed, making her contemplate calling 9-1-1 and then overthinking it, thinking Aisha would be taken from her so she ignored the altercation. Later on she is allowed to go to a mother daughter program which allows her the freedom of being outside of the house and away from her in-laws which she enjoys greatly. Later on she gets to have a job to bring more money to the family seeing as one income is not enough, Samra enjoys it greatly but even with the freedom of her job Ahmed still finds ways to destroy that bit of happiness. She later on learns that she might not even be able to attend college like she dreams of.
Critical analysis:(106)
The quote, “The signs always seemed like a promise-- a tiny beacon of my future. That’s where I’ll be heading soon. Now I felt foolish for believing in this fairy tale.” I think it holds significance to this story because it shows that no matter how much Samra chooses to believe something good will come out of this marriage it all starts to unravel and the realization of what her marriage has cost her and will continue to cost her is coming to light slowly. It also shows just how much she’s lost and how she was manipulated into this marriage with empty promises.
Personal response:(129)
Seeing as this is a true story, seeing how she was manipulated and how she’s being treated, her thoughts, everyone’s actions and ignorance, it’s really painful to read. The story is making me yearn to help her, to somehow be able to jump into her story and go back in time and make sure she didn’t enter this marriage. She’s so young and she was manipulated to easily and it’s hard to see what she’s losing and how she’s losing her morals and herself all at the same time. It’s heartbreaking and makes me cry seeing as this is something the truly happened and more is still yet to come, it makes me anticipate seeing her leave this life and see how she escapes the life she never wanted.

Fazbear Frights: What We Found Analysis
Here’s my analysis for What We Found, the third story in Gumdrop Angel. I wrote this as I read so it may be a little different than my previous analysis where I read the story first and went back.
If you’re a Michael Afton fan I highly recommend this. Also, there’s possibly some insight into William Afton, Mrs. Afton, and Henry too, so it’s worth a skim.
Pg 144 '...a place thirty-some years forgotten' Just reconfirming FNAF 3 is 30 years past *one* of the FNAF closings, presumably FNAF 2 location.
Pg 145 "The whole building was giving him [Hudson] a headache." FIX THE VENTILATION BRUH
Pg 148 '...they were able to use salvaged derelict equiptment original to the old pizzerias.' Another confirmation of something we heard from Phone Guy.
Pg 147 "How old are you?" "Twenty-three, same as you." I think this gives us Michael's age during FNAF 3.
EDIT: This kept me awake last night. Obviously this is impossible because he has to be alive for at least 10 years before 1983, BUT maybe its just reconfirming FNAF 3′s year? 2023?
Pg 149 "Hudsan's dad died and his mom married Lewis, a ridiculous balding man who wore plaid vests and smoked a pipe" Did... Did this book just seriously imply Mrs. Afton left William for Henry? Really? (Yes, there's differences; the husband is dead and the man wears plaid 'vests' but it seems very odd to include that detail. This could just have been the writer's own imagination, though.) I have seen this as a fan theory and 100% explains the jealousy aspect of William, but I can't help but kinda hate it. I think this is very important, though, and probably Scott's intention. "This horrible little man [Lewis]... would make Hudson's next ten years a living Hell" This REALLY intrigues me given the context I just went over. The text implies Lewis was fairly neglectful to our main character / Michael stand-in Hudson. Maybe I'm wrong and for some reason Mrs. Emily left and went to William? XD Haha, I'm reading too much into this page. Maybe I'll come back to this later. I figure it's more of Scott possibly including double-details (contradicting stuff with the same character that really applies to two, which has been something I heavily pointed out in previous anaylsis on this blog) Having said that, I'm going w/the former because I can't imagine Henry being abusive (neglectful yes, abusive no) and he's never been portrayed that way in official works like William has in the novels.
Pg 150 "Hudson began to screw up in class...a product of spending the night in fear that his stepfather [Lewis]... [would] beat him just for the fun of it." Ooof. Big confirm on William actually being abusive. Unless we stick with the Henry theory for Lewis (combined with Midnight Motorist Henry theory / alcoholic). "...near-daily beatings..." "his mom started taking pills to get through the day..." So, whoever Mrs. Afton is, she was definetly not paying attention. But then, most people married to serial killers either don't notice because of denial (like this) or because the killer is so manipulative / careful they can't notice.
"Barry, who had red hair and freckles..." Yo?! Is that a description of Fritz?! These friends in the story could be the other kids Michael knew's stand-in's, aka the two gravestones with names he used (Fritz and Jeremy), as shown in the checks for the games and FNAF 6. I've long figured Michael was probably friends with the victims--it makes them easier, although riskier, targets [for William]. The two friends are male, too, like Fritz and Jeremy. If you're curious about Duane's description (our stand in for Jeremy), it's "tight black shirt... muscles... black hair long enough for a glossy ponytail..." I'm not sure if this matches anything found in the novels or contradicts them, though. (The novels = TSE trilogy)
"And so it went... until the night of the fire." For context, this is before FF burns down. We're learning of Hudson's life from his close friends in childhood, his father's death, his mother remarrying, to his abusive stepfather, to his grades slipping to this line. This would be a new fire not seen/mentioned in the games...
Pg 151 "...go to Charlie's for a sundae..." Really. Really Scott. Just gonna use this name again. OK. I'm not even gonna discuss this because it's probably irrelevant. *This is confirmed on pg 158 to be an ice cream shop. No lore relevance aside the annoying name coincidences Scott loves to troll with.
"This is not... an advance into enemy territory, a fight with demons, or a descent into Hell..." Uh, what? What is Hudson talking about? XD I'm only noting it because it seems so out of place. He's probably talking about video games or something.
Another note, although I don't have a specific reference since it is mentioned off-hand many times, is that Hudson keeps referring to his "history" which is implied to have kept him from getting a well-paying job and a girl he's crushing on doesn't know this "history" which is good for him. Seems good old "Michael Stand-In" has done some jail time or something. Edit: On pg 154/155 the girl asks Hudson, "Did you do it?" Seems he may have killed his stepfather or been involved with something else just as bad. Edit 2: No, I was thinking too deep into it. This probably refers to Evan's death at Fredbear's. DUH.
Pg 156 describes an actual "prize corner" in FF! What am I even reading? IIRC this is in FNAF 3, too. So they just hand out these scary gift boxes to people that complete the attraction? (Hudson says he *would* have fun handing out the scary toys to kids when this location opens--kind of a bully thing to do, eh?)
"[Hudson] avoid[ed] glancing in any of the mirrors..." I'm only pointing this out because it could be reference to one of two things. 1) We know because of one of UCN's music tracks, William has a fear of his reflection. Michael probably shares this trait, especially since 2) after Ennard and all... and later on pg 157 it also says, "he never wanted to face: himself" Sounds like guilt, my guy.
Pg 157 "blonde hair... blue eyes..." Hudson shares an eye color with Michael. It's possible Michael had blonde hair as a child and it changed to brown (it's common, something I personally went through being technically blonde/ blue eyed myself)
"He [Hudson] knew from personal experience that toys could turn from fun...to torture ina heart-beat" Fairly self explanatory. Either Hudson's worked at a creepy location before or he doesn't like remembering Fredbear's.
*checks how much is left.* There's still 35 pages (not counting back/front) left of this... This is gonna be a lot of notes.
Pg 158 Hudson doesn't have a car. Poor Mike, probably having to walk everywhere. Especially as a corpse.
Pg 160 This page describes many physical issues Hudson has that prevents him from entering the Navy, all from the abuse of Lewis. Obvious paralell to Michael becoming an undead [because his father sent him to CBPR indirectly causing his condition]
Pg 161 "How's your granny, Hud?... ...Is she still alive?" "I don't think she can die." Does anyone in the Afton family really 'die'? XD
Pg 162 These few pages discuss Hudson's grandmother. She's described as "a seer who claimed to know the future... ...wore big men's plaid flannel shirts with baggy jeans" Um, more plaid / flannel? AGH. STAHP. Lowkey, I would totally headcanon my Aunt Jen like this, though.
Pg 163 "Hudson's mom... the way she was before Hudson's dad had died... never... particularly warm and fuzzy... but... effiencient and responsible..." More about Mrs. Afton, so that's kinda neat.
"Hudson's dad was fun and attentive." There's a good Dad in this series?
"Unfortunetly, he also struggled with mental illness." "invisible low points" (Pg 164) Kinda reminds me of how Henry is described after Charlotte's death in the books.
Pg 164 "When Steven got himself into a bad deal that cost him his small business... he'd taken his life." Oh, it is Henry! SMH. Way to use confusing paralells. So, from our understanding thus far, Hudson's real father, Steven, is our Henry stand-in. His step-father despite being described similar to Henry, is actually our William stand-in. Fair game, Scott.
Pg 164 "...he [Hudson] was locked into a supply closet..." Oh shit, you guys. So, let me go on a tangent here, because this IS important! I just watched a retrospective on Sister Location and FNAF 6 earlier and one theory for Midnight Motorist was the person in the chair was the mother and the kid was Michael. I think this little line may confirm that. In fact, the story may be the key to figuring things out. Obviously, the line is a paralell to FNAF 4's scene in which Crying Child was locked in the supply closet of Fredbear's. I know some people, including Matpat, believe[d] CC was Michael, and in this book's context, it sort of works. This does contradict Step Closer and 1000 other things that make Michael the older brother, but maybe it's hinting at MM? Abusive stepdad (possibly Henry... maybe William is gone at this point), checked out Mom (hey, grey couch lady with Foxybro's font). IDK, but its definetly something to think about.
Pg 165 Lewis is mentioned as calling Hudson "nothing" and saying "you're nothing" on several occasions on this page. Just more abuse, for those accurate fanfic writers like me. Also I kinda wanna watch Morel Orel again. Yall know my fav character is Clay. Yall know.
"You're smoke." <-- Lewis / The text later reads, "...there was some irony, given what eventually happened." BRUH. Why did your stepdad die in a fire? :V TELL ME.
"When his family's house burned down at the end of his senior year..." Huh. Is there a fire we don't know about in the game-verse? Could this explain what happened to the FNAF 4 house before MM house?!
"...it purged Hudson of Lewis and his mother." MRS. AFTON BURNED ALIVE, TOO? Bruh. I can't with this story.
The text later describes the fire is concluded to be man-made and Hudson was blamed for it. Can't say if this ties to Michael, but it IS interesting... TBF, there is a small paralell to draw between Henry in FNAF 6 and his history of suicide in the books, too.
Pg 166 "...this place's [FF] busted thermostat.." I just find this line funny.
Pg 167 "...after three weeks of keeping an eye on the place" Some more timeline context for FNAF 3. We know that Michael worked there a little while before we start playing the game thanks to one of the phone calls, IIRC, so this makes sense. If Michael was accused of [something] and also wanting to hunt down his father, then it makes perfect sense why he's working a dead end job at Freddy's over and over and over. Fun fun fun.
Pg 169 "He hated to think about a functional character [Foxy]" This line is in regards to Hudson not liking the set up of Pirate's Cove and Foxy's hook to scare people. Sounds familiar, don't it? (For Michael anyway.)
Pg 173 "Some big find is arriving tomorrow." SPRINGY BOI! COME ON BOOK, get on with the show?
Pg 176 "Granny was wearing a red-and-green plaid shirt and her baggy jeans." Nothing special, but it was specifically brought up twice. I'm kind of racking my brain trying to understand what the point of this character is outside of "woooo everything is haunted don't you know that" kind of character.
Pg 180 "...dropped the crate on the linoleum with a resounding thud." HEY. Poor Springtrap, just gettin' tossed around like the trash he is.
Pg 186 "If you weren't so stupid, I'd tell you more about it." Springtrap bringing the burn. =:)
"A voice with a burr-like rasp...hint of a Southern accent" I'm going to assume this is because it's Lewis probably in the suit in this story and not our old British lad.
"It's was Mr. Atkin's voice." THE MATH TEACHER? *goes back to check* 'The algebra teacher'. Okay...
Pg 190 Okay, so Hudson hear's Lewis' voice this time. Okay, I get it now. Springtrap in this kind of imbodies all of Hudson's old bullies, including the teacher. He also has PTSD, just FYI. IDK if anyone finds that important, but it's fairly obvious by the line "He wasn't in his bedroom. Lewis didn't just slam his head into a desk; his head had been slammed into the [arcade] game."
"Why did he hallucinate a scene from his childhood?" Oh, it's not PTSD, then. It's just the VENTILATION ERROR. lol Okay.
Just a note, as I'm reading through the more action-based stuff, I kind of feel bad for Michael if he had flashbacks like this guy. They're intense.
So, Lewis' voice finally comes out of Springtrap on Pg 213. There's that.
Pg 220 "You can just stay there [in his room]" Kind of a paralell to Midnight Motorist. Lewis is saying it to Hudson. I really feel like the kid in the MM game is Michael because of this story...
Pg 223 "Heat purges. Fire heals." I'm sure that's Henry's life motto.
The ending was stupid, but most in these stories are. Hudson is hallucinating and is implied to have burned himself alive in FF's oven. Meh? The first half of this one is A TRIP and a little insight into what I 100% believe is Michael's childhood. I think the saddest part of it all is that we never got Springtrap speaking to Michael in FNAF 3--and if it's ever remade I hope we get more of them interacting.

Celebrating Student Scholarship
Take a look at the research, scholarship, performance work, and more that students in the Theatre department have been up to this year!
Julia Tokish
Tumblr media
Historically, South Asian playwrights have been vastly underrepresented in American theatre. My Presidential Fellowship, conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Meenakshi Ponnuswami, seeks to address and correct this injustice. Through my Presidential Fellowship, I conduct research on first- and second-generation immigrant playwrights of South Asian descent. I search for and collect information not only on the playwrights themselves, but also their plays and production histories. This project is still ongoing, but we ultimately hope to create a publicly accessible database featuring these playwrights and their work as well as a published anthology of certain selected plays from my research. If you are interested in learning more about my research process and future plans, please visit the following link:

On Earth Day, April 22nd my research team and I produced a virtual Zoom performance that told the stories of flooding caused by Tropical Storm Agnes in this area in 1972. It showcases a deeply momentous time for the River Valley. The stories and memories are very important to this community and many people take much joy (as well as pain) in sharing their experiences. This project has been in the making since the beginning of my freshman year when I chose this project as my Presidential Fellowship and I was so thrilled to see it come to fruition. With over 200 zoom attendees, we put together a performance based on real people’s stories from interviews conducted by me and my team. Gerard Stropnicky, our storyteller in residence was the mastermind who helped us put monologues, puppet theatre, music, pictures, and dance together into a piece that struck the hearts of the viewers. It was so special to be a part of the cast composed of creators like myself, Lewisburg residents, and flood survivors to create such a special night of community bonding. As we all know very well, the best way to make change is through art! Stay tuned for future performances (hopefully live) next year!
The zoom link is below if you’d like to watch any piece of the performance! The show starts around the 10 minute mark:

I presented research surrounding finding strategic solutions to food waste in both the Kalman and Sustainability Symposium. Our problem statement was: The US wastes nearly 40% of our food, creating 125-160 billion pounds of waste annually, leading to high emission rates, resource depletion, and food insecurity. Our research question was: What are the most effective waste mitigation and management strategies in the restaurant industry that could be utilized to produce a more sustainable environment? My partner Simon and I administered a survey on campus to classmates to investigate habits, behaviors, knowledge, and potential solutions around food waste. The survey yielded significant differences in how much of a meal was thrown out between fast food restaurants, full service restaurants, and buffets. While 25% of respondents throw out 11% or more of their meal at fast food restaurants, the amount of respondents throwing out 11% or more of their meal swells to 37% at full service restaurants. Asked why they throw this food out the most common responses included: Too large portions, ordering too much, inconsistent appetite, and leftovers brought home being thrown out. We deduce the differences are due to one size fits all plates, which are typically over the recommended calorie count. While a variation of small, medium and large sizes are often offered at fast food restaurants, no such options exist at full service restaurants. Males said the portion size of their meal correlated to their appetite 69% of the time but females said the correlation only occurred 57% of the time. Presented with various food waste mitigation strategies respondents were most in favor of the idea of customized menus with multiple portion options. 92% of respondents said they were at least somewhat likely to purchase a smaller portion for less cost. Meanwhile, 55% of respondents are somewhat likely to order smaller food portions for the identical price of the larger meal. Therefore in order to reduce food waste we proposed implementing multiple portion options at restaurants. I you’d like to see the presentation look under Saturday, Session 2, 12-1 at this link: https://sustainabilitysymposium.scholar.bucknell.edu/saturday-schedule/

The Theatre and Dance Department periodically awards the honor of an Individual Production Project (319) to seniors who have demonstrated advanced work and a deep commitment to an area of theatre production. This project allows students to assume a leadership role for a mainstage production under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Brooke Echnat and Catherine MacKay were awarded Individual Production Projects to serve as the Director and Dramaturg for  Bliss (or Emily Post is Dead) by Jami Brandli.
Bliss follows the Ancient Greek characters Medea, Clytemnestra, Antigone, and Cassandra, now pill-popping housewives, in 1960s NJ. Cassandra, a black woman, is gifted with the art of prophecy but cursed by Apollo that no one will believe her visions. She seeks to prove these women can have control over their lives in this modern era. Can we reclaim our “fates” or are our fates predetermined by societal structures set in place?
As Director, Brooke engaged in various mediums and methodologies as she navigated directing in a pandemic. She utilized both virtual and in-person rehearsal processes. Along with the efforts of her cast, crew, and collaborators, she was able to create a piece of theatre at a time when many theaters in our country are still shut down.
As the Dramaturg, Catherine researched many topics related to the play such as Greek Mythology and Emily Post’s Etiquette to help the production team and actors better understand the world of the play. Catherine’s research provided foundational material that informed the creative decisions of the play.

This picture is Mackenzie immediately after passing her Honors Thesis Defense, which over 100 individuals attended. (That’s a lot for a defense). “I’m beyond grateful for the support of the Theatre community, not only for showing up and making me feel so deeply valued and loved, but for being my home the last four years.”

Twelve Angry Men: A Twenty-First Century Reflection of Race, Art and Incarceration is a Comparative Humanities Honors Thesis concentrating on Africana Studies, Theatre, Sociology and Legal Studies, demonstrating the importance of investing in incarcerated communities through education and theatre. The case study used for my research was the production of Twelve Angry Men I directed at SCI Coal Township Prison. The play connected inmates and Bucknell students through the Sociology Inside/Out class, which I taught alongside the production in the Fall of 2019.

Some of the loot from today's Legendary Hero Banner
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got Eir as a free summon, which I don't mind. I would have rather had another one of the colourless heroes as I don't have F!Corrin nor Leila, but at least Eir didn't cost me any orbs.
I had a hunch I'd get a few Thrasirs, and of course I did. I was able to fix my bane on my other Thrasir and get her to +2, all in the first few pulls, so all things considered, I'm okay with her showing up
Hel is someone I wanted for a while, but not super strongly. Glad she pity broke me, even though her stats are flaming garbage (-spd, +res). That means I don't have to snipe for her in future banners if I'm suddenly tempted, since I got my copy of her (mostly for catalogue purposes tbh)
Reyson may not be a 5☆, but this one got me to +7 so he's always welcomed
Edelgard! She's the one I wanted from this banner. She's +atk which is hecking epic of her, and I want to train her to be a force to be reckoned with (I already sacrificed my last extra Hector for her so she better put in some work!)
Overall, I spent 160 orbs on this banner, and got five 5☆s, 6 wanted units, so my rate was definitely good! (32 opu/ 27 opwu)
My plan is to summon on CYL (I'd like to sweep the banner this time) and August's Legendary banner (for Bramimond, though a copy of Mila and one of Claude <-[let's be real, he'll be our legendary hero in August] wouldn't hurt as I have neither).
Then, I'd like to snipe reds on September's legendary banner since I didn't get Seliph last month and his art is gorgeous! Plus his voice...Christian LaMonte deserves props on him. The reason I didn't summon him last time is because he was announced to be on a banner with Líf in September, and I need to fix Líf's bane, so it would be more efficient to shoot 2 birds with one (red) stone.

1826 Monday 13 March
6 1/2 12
Sent down my letters (written last night) for the post - to M- [Mariana] (Lawton) and to 'Mrs. Macdonald, General Drummond's, Culdees Castle, Crieff, Perthshire, N.B.' At 7 35/60 set off to Lightcliffe - got there in 1/2 hour - Mr. Walker Priestley there - breakfasted - shewed Mr. Kershaw's plan - Mr. W.P- [William Priestley] would only buy lot 20 of 52 yards - thought Mr. K-'s [Kershaw's] lowest price for the whole more than the ground was worth - I had already made up my mind (thinking of Godley) to buy only lot 20 - Mr. W.P- [William Priestley] thought Godley very desirable - but £4000 too much to borrow for it - sat a little while with Mrs. P- [Priestley] came away about 10 - she walked back with me all along our new walk, as far as up to the garden door, I then returned with her to the top of Mitholm hill, and we parted a little after 11 - Met Mr. Carr coming to me in the walk - walked about, and in the Godley land almost an hour - would evidently be glad to sell me the whole farm - I said his price was quite beyond my reach - to sell a small part, he must have £200 a days work - he would take less £174 a days work if I took the field adjoining us next the brook, the field next the wood, and as much between as would straighten the fences - which would make as he thought 8 days work - I bad him 1/. a yard or £160 a days work for this quantity - I could not give more - he would consider of it, and come again tomorrow morning at 11 -
Came home at 12 1/2  - Long talk with my aunt - wrote to Mr. Kershaw to say I would give him his price for lot 20, 52 yards at 15/., but could not agree to his terms for the rest of his ground - would take the walls at a fair valuation - returned the plan, and sent George in the afternoon with this and the letter - my aunt seemed well satisfied with this decision - she would not prevent my doing about Godley as I liked, but I see she does not wish me to involve myself at all unnecessarily - is afraid of our having too much to borrow -
Went out at 2 1/2 - Sauntered about - went to young Charles H-'s [Howarth's] - there are about 80 feet of larch timber left, enough to roof any building we may erect on the ground we buy of Mr. Kershaw - ordered the 12 roods left of railing to be got ready, meaning to have it set along the top of the Lower brook Ing wood - and to take up what Charles H- [Howarth] set which would be down before the end of summer, the railing being bad as well as ill set -
Went to John Oates - they pay 12/. a year for the right of coal-road thro' Mr. Carr's field adjoining the wood - this field cannot be more than 2 1/2 days work - then went across to Godley - viewed the ground - the purchase is desirable - spoke to the railers - they would take the bark of the railing at 1 1/2 a rood, or would do it by day, and think they could do 60 roods a day - would gas-tar it at 4d. [pence] a rood altogether - taking single railing which they would do for 2d. [pence] a rood and the pen-railing which would be worth more than 4d. [pence] a rood - would be worth 6d. [pence] a rood, taking the whole in gross - James Sykes thinks this reasonable - Guessed 6d. [pence] a rood instead of 4d. [pence] - By the way Charles H- [Howarth] said (if we built a cottage at Northgate) flooring, - the wood would cost 3d. [pence] a foot, and laying would cost 4d. [pence] a yard - Cottage doors they generally reckoned about 20/. a piece, wood and making - window frames were charged by the foot - omitted to ask how much - the causeway along the bottom of the hall wood finished and sodding along each side (edge) of it - the levelling on the upper side finished by James Sykes and John Booth, and I hope William Green has now done leading for us, and is in future to be employed only for my father -
Met my father at 5 at the garden door - we sauntered up and down, surveyed the Godley land I wish to have - my father would not buy gold too dear with silver but pretty well agrees, it would be advisable to give £160 a days work for from 6 to 8 days work rather than £200 for only the field next the brook - Told him he should have all the men but John from tonight, and John from next Monday up to which time I would pay them all, and then they should be his servants - my father just saw my aunt for a minute and went away at 6 1/4, having seen the peacock and pea hen which Mr. Carr has given us, and which came yesterday -
Dressed - dinner at 6 1/2 - afterwards settling accounts and wrote to Betsy Harrison to say that as I had promised to let her have an answer tomorrow I would not omit writing but that from unforeseen circumstances I could not say decidedly whether my aunt would take the person (at present very far distant) we thought of, or not - if Betsy H- [Harrison] could get a place that suited her, not to wait for us any longer, but, if not, to call at Dr. H.S.B-'s [Henry Stephen Belcombe's] about 10 on Monday a.m. and Mrs. Lawton would speak to her for us - Very fine day - Barometer 5 degrees above changeable Fahrenheit 46 1/2° at 10 5/60 p.m. at which hour came up to bed - then wrote all the above of today which took me till 11 1/4 -
Great deal of conversation with Mrs. W.P- [William Priestley] this morning said she should have a key of the walk-gate and come and bring anyone she liked - I should make my will, and thought of making Mr. Priestley a trustee along with perhaps Mr. Hartley of Middleton lodge and Cecil Dalton of Croft - said I counted with certainty of two thousand a year eventually if I was lucky perhaps it might be three and when I settled with my family as I joked and said might have something additional they have now eight hundred a year may have two thousand if thirteen thousand locked up in America beever paid the last Mr Walker seems to have behaved very dishonorably about this money young John was not quite four thousand and out goings paid now very much more than three to spend - the people think I shall not live much here - perhaps not after all for I have felt a little rheumatism in my right knee today and anything of this kind will soon drive me off I see too much of my aunt and like not to be always wearing leather kneecaps and woolen ones at night in bed as I have done perhaps these six months - perhaps when I once get away in May care little to return - E..O. - Had just done the last 12 lines at 11 25/60 -

No Haven 0.903
Main highlights for this one are cheerleaders, titfuck training, forced encounter expansion, other new assignments, new commissions, and more.
Download links can be found on the No Haven page. Update notes can be found under the break.
If you don’t have RAGS and you need a copy to run it there’s one on the help page here or the one pinned on the patreon you can find a link to in the attached read me which is more up to date. If RAGS has never worked on your system despite the help page suggestions then it might be worth trying with one of the alternate players. There’s also improvements on there to the RAGS player that can also help with performance.
v0.903:
Personal assignment improvements: ---Added a chance in Town boosted by Sneaky and Perceptive to get some extra supplies for free when you would normally have had an uneventful day. ---Added a chance in the Tavern boosted by Friendly and Resilient to get some more extra supplies without extra gold spent when you would normally have had an uneventful day. ---Increased the Tavern supplies result where you would gain 20 to 40. Training improvements: ---Advanced Bimbo Training - Anyone with this training will count the traits Bimbo (Bim) and Sex Addict (Sex) as fully favoured. Crit no longer grants Bimboborn and instead If trained by someone with Hypnotic/Dominator/Corruption/Malevolence will fully embed the bimbo mantra. ---Heal Slut Training - Anyone with this training will count the traits Healer (Hea) and Slutty (Slt) as fully favoured. ---Advanced Sissification Training - Anyone with this training will count the traits Feminine (Fem) or Beautiful (Btf), along with the Exceptional version (Exc), as fully favoured. If trained by someone with Hypnotic/Dominator/Corruption/Malevolence will fully embed the sissy mantra. ---Exquisite Fellatrix Training - Anyone with this training will count the traits Submissive (Sub) and Seductive (Sed) as fully favoured. If trained by someone with Hypnotic/Dominator/Corruption/Malevolence will fully embed the suck cock mantra. -Changed the calculation on forced encounter making you a puppet leader. Previously you needed to have five different people forcing encounters along with paying out 100g or more to the current forcer. This made it potentially impossible for it to happen if you kept getting hit by one repeatedly. I've changed it now so that it's a separate roll for each forcer with it being adjusted for how much you're paying out making it much more likely if there's more than one but still possible if you have just the one. -Bimboborn removal protection now only applies to slavers. -New powerful racial for Draki giving them the chance of rerolling the assignment result when their magic/elementalism would be a positive. -Oozes now can use their racial to avoid Week's End rejection. Also fixed the typo in regard to Male/futas getting a +50% penalty instead of 30%. -All three versions of Kiruna have gained a substantial buff to her butt variable. Recruited Kiruna now correctly is Draenei Wright like the playable one. Her and the Orc Wright will now have the new Wright racial. -Added an extra ten days length to the expiry of the Male Perfidity critical success opportunity. -Fae have now also lost their auto aspect after it was turned into a Racial a while back. -You can no longer make use of golems, driders, and legion. -Northerner cheerleader may be an inch away from succumbing to her orc cum habit, but for now at least remembered how to dance. -Marshlands training is back to being once per slaver again after somehow that condition mysteriously disappeared. -Demi-Angels will now get regular surnames while True-Angels will get the old Demi-Angel ones. -Insatiable should now also count as Sex Addict for fulfil opportunity assignments. -Succubi can now properly shun the other. -Removed the mention of having a tail from the draki Their view. -If the slaver scouting the Ever Forest is lost on the Fail you will no longer get the scouted assignment. -Fix for the short trait gained when getting Cunning from marshlands training. -Fix for an CT error referencing Orc Cum Addict training. -Fix for the (Exc) rejection check on Week's End comes. Also fixed former Cheerleaders getting rejected, for city elf cheerleaders having the fallen examine, and the correct rejection result not showing. -Fix for a name change issue due to becoming a succubi.. -Fix for being able to send the slaver you're betraying on Whore Makers. -Fix for the new enflamed/heightened senses, nipple chain, and sensitive nipple checks. -Fix for an order of encounters with Donella and the witches that could lead to getting a blank result. -Fix for a bunch of errant text on Advanced Sissification Training. -Fix for opportunity assignment displaying a random image for the result. -Fix for Fulfil Opportunities not being removed on expiry correctly.
v0.902:
-Critical fix for Elven Farm locking up the game. -You can now unlock the Arrogance Subjugated assignment by sending anyone with corruption to Treachery Most Foul rather than having to do it yourself. -To make oozes less samey they will not get an extra trait on average, and there's a new trait package with minimal traits to reflect oozes that break out of the usual mold. This will mean it is also a bit less likely for them to start with bimbo. -Before slavers would only try to start a forced encounter if they were unscrupulous (or a Wisp). I've changed it now so if they feel they have a case for revenge so badly failed hypnotic/dominator attempts, you being possessed, or them having less than 50 morale will override that. I've also made it so there's a bonus to the attempt at less than 50 morale and an increased one at under 20 morale. -Fix for the High Elf dominatrix getting their aspect for free. -Fix for being able to remove a second-in-command due to them being a leader who dislikes the role overriding checks for being a bimbo, thug, or whatever. -Fix for not having the option to make use of slaves made into slavers. -Fix for not getting slaves or slavers on critting Goblin Village if recruitment focus is set to beginners.
v0.901:
New assignments: ---When Week's End Comes. A new Uncommon City of Aversol assignment with a whole bunch of special text as it's affected by the weather and two of the events in Cold Front and Ragestorm. Has commissioned artwork also used for five 'semi-unique' slaves like the city elf bride and lago'mae priestess. Anyone from this one has their own special racial and with enough of them unlocks a new encampment upgrade. ---Basic and Advanced Titfuck Training. Both have commissioned artwork. There's now a chance boosted by this training for slaves to be titfucked when normally they'd have been fucked instead. New commissions: ---A Corner of your Very Own. Also used for Amazon Bimbos. ---Most Impropa. Also used for Orc Slaves. ---Cheap and Cheerful. Also used for Neko Bimbos. ---Raid Isolated Elven Farm with two versions with the entirely naked version used for a Crit or Success. As part of this redone the intro and added a chance of the crit to get a Shadow Outcast. Added some text to the Critical and Success when you got to reflect that. ---Pillow Talk with two versions. This was contributed by a patron so my current plan is to use them for now with the first one as the intro, and the cum version for a Crit or Success unless one of the current placeholders would work better, and then in future I plan to commission a more generic one while only using these ones if the player or slaver sent is Futanari. Because the former placeholder used to be also the Wood Elves examine I've replaced that with two new more fitting placeholders for males and females. ---Not a new one specifically. However I have used closer crops of the succubi from Truly Divine female slaves. One if the slave in question has a tail, and if not, the other will be used in general. Assignment trait adjustments: ---Fel Tainted is now a Failure on the Marauding version of Spectacle of the Sacred rather than being Catastrophic. Swapped the positions of Clumsy and Magic: Corruption. ---Fel Tainted is now a Failure on Mistress of Torments rather than being Catastrophic. Follower is now a Disaster, and removed Feminine as a trait checked on that one. ---Fel Tainted is now a Success on Seduction of the Light. Very Rare Race (160+ Value) is now Critical, and Depraved has been moved from Success to Disaster. ---Added Lengthy Tongue as a Success to all Lesbian and Blowjob training. ---Replaced Submissive as a Disaster on Basic Dominance Training with Unruly and Friendly. New racials and racial adjustments: ---Made the auto Fel Tainted that Succubus, Legion, Nethemir, and Fallen get into a properly listed Racial. Now will have a reduced effect if they don't also have Fel Tainted as a trait. ---New racial for High Elves which both reduces the power and penalty of them frequently having Fel Tainted at the cost of losing access to Shadowplay. If they get the corruption Forehead Branding will lose this racial and can take that aspect as normal. ---Oozes have gained an extra save to avoid wounding/removal. ---New racial for Wrights to reflect what bonuses they had already. Also gained an improved extra save to avoid wounding/removal and will now be immune to most corruption gained on assignments. ---Added mention to racials where races don't need supplies or have resistances to biomancy and/or corruption. -Legion have now lost their auto aspect after it was turned into a Racial a while back. -Redid the placeholder composition for Shadow Outcast slavers removing the inappropriate troll design. Also redid the placeholder for Wedding Crashers as on looking at it again it's a pretty rough composition. Now broke into two using the same pieces. Left one for starting the assignment and examine for former briders with smaller chests, and right won for Crit or Success and the examine for above massive titted and above enslaved brides. -Outside of expanding the encampment other upgrades may not be purchased in the Golem scenario. -Fallen and Succubi no longer always start with Fel Tainted automatically and so should come with 1-2 extra traits on average compared to before. -Blowjob training has an increasing chance to turn feeling up into a blowjob. -Made it so the assignment profane ritual special result and others like with an increased chance of better results reduces corruption resistance. -Bimbo Shadow Outcasts now use the Expert Cumslut commission. I've also polished up that composition. -Updated Kat's new lore page with two new quotes, one from a new character. -If you're a puppet-leader you're now immune to being overthrown as well that's pretty much happened already. -Added Dancer to the Disasters caused by Hard Carry and blocked Lurg specifically from trying out as a cheerleader. -Moved the faith skill checks out from being dominated. Now Dominated/Obedient will just block them if they'd be a negative. -Fix for Basic Sissy adding (Fem) on top of (Exc) -Fix for the Sneaky from Mistweaver also not applying to the Mistweaver themselves. Did the same for Meticulous Plans on solo assignments. -Fix for the amazon maiden from Tall Tales, and the cathayan maiden from Cathayan Caravan not having the right traits caused by a previous bug fix. -Fix for a bunch of stuff involving slave selection like Biomancy/Corruption when Share the Wealth was the last assignment you went on. -Fix for becoming a puppet leader during a forced encounter repeating text twice and not showing correctly. -Fix for the recruited Kiruna not having a cock. -Fix for Tsumi Harpies being a favoured region for Cathayans rather than a favoured race. -Fix for repicking on assignment not clearing some of the tracked info about assigned slavers including whether or not more than one Ooze Caller is present. -Fix for the Imbued Symbol of Shaping saying it gives you Summoner instead of Biomancy. -Fix for not actually being able to take the aspect Old Hand. -Fix to ensure Aesandril is female. -Fix for Scout the City taking seven days instead of eight. -Fix for some oddness with Switch caused by Submissive being checked first, and if they have some form of Sub, Dominant checks would be skipped. -Fix for two successes on Lady-in-Waiting resulting in another part 2 being generated. -Fix for several traits being missed on skill checks when the character is obedient. -Fix for some issues with golem mercenaries.
v0.90:
-New assignments: ---Wayward Temptations. A new uncommon Dreadsea Coast assignment with specifically commissioned art and a hidden reward. Also used for the recruitable slaver unique Kaara de Sindero Oscuro's examine which gives you a pretty big clue of what that hidden reward might involve. Crit and Success have different descriptions on the outcomes based on your slaver's traits and aspects to reflect how they might go about accomplishing it. Specifically there's ones for Anointed One, Submissive, Depraved, mental powers like Dominator, Mind Reader, Faith: Shallya, and Seductive in that order along with the more basic approach for none of the above. All with altered/expanded versions when you go personally. ---Quicker than they Like. A new rare assignment on the Great Plains, and a follow up with some impressive rewards to the first QAYL. Only available for player characters who have run that first assignment themselves and were fortunate to return relatively unscathed. As part of this there's now a bonus to QAYL for you based on how many times you've run it yourself up to a maximum of five times which will also increase the chances of having a forced encounter. ---Spectacle of the Sacred. A new rare assignment on the Dreadsa Coast using patron provided commissioned art. Available from the second month onwards. First time you go on it has unique rewards (including an encampment buff), and text with two alternate approaches. Can be repeated after that with the two goals but with somewhat different text and rewards. -Other new commissions: ---To Hunt a Paladin. First part for the assignment and then another part for the successes. ---Raid Human Village. Also used for Human Commoner male slaves. Now should always respect the gender to enslave general order with specific traits if you get a male on the Crit. ---Raid Goblin Village. Now moved to the Dreadsea Coast, and has expanded text to reflect that. Two day version is no more and has been replaced by a five day version with improved rewards to reflect the additional time taken. Has alternate versions of the commission including one only seen if you do send an ogre futanari and succeed there. Now should always respect the gender to enslave general order. ---The Encampment. Will be used on finish day to show up randomly along with the title page, the blank background, your character's examine, and the map. It also will be replaced if there's an assignment completing or a slave is being used. Crops of it are now used for the Male Wright and Female Neko slaver examine (the old Female Neko slaver examine is used for now as the Futanari one with the old Futanari one being removed). ---The Encampment for the Golem Scenario. Crops with variants of it are now used for Kreen and Cathayan slave examines. Due to this I've added a new placeholder for Female Cathayan slavers. ---Female/Futa Human Cityborn Slaver Examine, Female/Futa Marlsune Slaver, and Female/Futa Marlsune Slave Examines depending on the version used. There's also another version to be used in a later update when a certain advanced race is added.   -Forced Encounter expansion: ---Failing to implant a trigger can now result in the target slaver returning the favour if they are Hypnotic/Dominator/Psionic and will be more likely to attempt to start a forced encounter. It's also a bit more risky to fail to use a trigger or dominate during a respect check against a Hypnotic/Dominator/Psionic slaver. ---New text with variations for forced encounters due to being subjected to Malevolence and being Possessed. ---New variations based on whether they've done it before, and new variations with improvements for being subjected to Hypnotic and Dominator. ---Possible now to gain the Puppet Leader status with enough repeated visits and if the right requirements are met. -New racials: ---Kestrae Harpies now better reflect their forest flying abilities. ---Demi-Angels boost healing both in encampment and on assignment by being present. ---Neko may ignore the first Disaster gained on Infiltration assignments. ---Kitsune now do better on Diplomacy against the easily fooled, but less so against the more cultured. ---Humans help other races work better together. ---Fallen having gotten so corrupted to fall from being demi-angels now get even more corrupted. -Two new unique starts: ---A seductive Sea Elf male using the Chained Melody commissioned art with a new aspect and lore page. ---A big Forest Goblin male using commissioned generously provided by a patron with a new aspect and lore page. -Updated the Art Sources to include all current commissions including for some future assignments. -Overhauled the text on Hard Reality. Mainly the critical success which is now twice as long as it used to be, but there's also improvements to the success and intro. Also fixed the issue where she was not coming with Magic: Illusion. -You can now get level ups from the encampment even when you're at the max aspect slots meaning you can get a chance at getting free aspects like Dark Pact and Practitioner to Arch-Practitioner. -Jacked up the odds on the scouting upgrades for the mid level and most expensive ones. -The recruitable form of Kat is now inexperienced, has picked up a new outfit, seductive and a more specific lore page, along with pumping up her ass to the next level. -Biomancy flexibility may now be done if the target is agile but hasn't got the exceptional result and is not an elf. Also corrected the breasts to show when they've hit maximum.   -Arisin' on the Storm will only be generated now from the second month onwards. -Convent slavers and slaves will now come wearing their habits like in the Heretic scenario. -Convent rather than having their own specific skin description now track what they were before joining the sisters. Using the skin description tables from their various possible origins and will have extra description noting what they were before. This will also come with some potential extra value bonuses. Witches already worked like this before with the various human subtypes, but now have a chance to also be elves and neko like Convent can with their own set of new specific descriptions. -Expanded the Convent lore pages a bit mainly to better flesh out some of the faith's hidden places of worship. -Small expansion to the City Elf lore page. -Added a check so that Shadriel has to be a slaver for the owned relationship when her former matriarch is promoted to happen. -Added a note to the start and to the Art Sources that all non-commissioned art is now considered placeholders with the intention to replace in time with commissions. As part of this replaced the petrified examine for the Artistry in Flesh assignment art. -Reduced the bonus gold and supplies from Marauding rank ups as at max rank they could be way, way too high. Bonus is increased now on Rare/Special assignments. -Reduced the rate that the recruited ooze caller calls oozes. -Reduced the expiry length of all versions of Saving Glory by 40 days, and increased all versions of Shark of the Cards Expiry lengths by 4 days and Board the Crossbones by 2 days. -Mad Schemes due to potential inconsistencies based on how that aspect is worked out will no longer show in suggestions. -Biomancy Flexibility will no longer show as completed if the slaver hasn't got Elven Flexibility and can be attempted if they already have Agile. -Forest Goblins have some skin colour variations rather than just the one. -Added some tall male descriptions where they have dancer, sneaky or agile which would make the 'built like an orc' mention inappropriate. -Fix for an issue with Reputations where on a positive result you could still go down in an illogical manner. -Fix for the check for hates it on guard assigning was using the camp bitch one instead. -Fix for Switch not generally doing what it should do when it comes to trait checks. -Fix for formatting on Ballet of Brutality, Queen's Gaze, Private Dancer, Rules of Nature, Scourge Artiste, The Seven Veils, Dawn's Radiance, and Shallya's Mercy. -Fix for the following having the wrong short abbreviation for their Trapper trait which was preventing them from getting the Booty Snatcher aspect: One of the Forest Goblin trait packages, The Ooze Caller start, and the unique from Deluge of Oozes. -Fix for Obedient slavers not getting the Sub crit version on Decadence Like No Other. -Fix for the description for Beautiful not being shown under Full Custom. -Fix for an issue with Brief Foray where there was only a minimal amount of gold rewarded. -Fix for getting the sub version of possession despite being dom/corrupt due to running out of trait slots. -Fix for the abbreviations of Greedy being incorrect which could result in drow ex-soldiers picking up double greedy from corruption. -Fix for an issue with high value/veteran rewards such as the Asanei leader from Best Left Sealed. Due to them getting the chance for extra traits the minus for that was potentially setting them back to 0 making the game think they didn't have any traits and so when they got the generated one the fixed ones were being overwritten. -Fix for the outfit from Ponygirl training turning up on random assignments. -Fix for dominant characters not having access to zoomed driders.   -Fix for Arrogance Subjugated only being able to be done once. -Fix for being able to take Strong Right Arm with 6-7 points. -Fix for the unique starts keeping their set physical attributes after taking different physical attributes in full custom. -Fix for being able to start Advanced Blowjob Training with only a partial in Basic Blowjob Training. -Fix for Corner of your very Own being set as Uncommon causing expiry issues.   -Fix for an issue with Slave Wear, Street Walking Attire, and Dresses were incorrectly changing the clothing total and could result in a message saying there's no clothing available.   -Fix for change of liking encampment roles in the morning text only showing if the slaver had a status effect. Thank you to Donna the helpful Werebear for highlighting this! -Some text fixes.

if you're in America and you have a robinhood account/some other brokerage and you have like some spare change... or even a portion of your 401k (and no i don’t mean withdraw it, i mean think about the allocation of your assets/increasing your contribution amount rn) please you have to put your money to work over the next 2 weeks.
also, first, let me preface this by saying i am genuinely sorry and my heart goes out to everyone personally affected by coronavirus. i do not intend to make the event seem insignificant, or simply brush it off.
quick mandatory disclaimer: don’t reblog bc i am not qualified to give financial advice and this is just my opinion. also, PLEASE do your homework before buying and don’t invest money you cannot afford to lose but seriously...
this covid-19 outbreak is going to cause an unprecedented economic event and I know for a fact that there will be people who will make a KILLING just from these 2 weeks alone. the economy will most likely have recovered in 2 years time and at the maximum 5 years. it will recover. if you are in your mid twenties or even thirties and below and you think you're going to be alive when you're 40 or 50. please for the love of god buy some stocks (but also please think and do your homework before buying them). think about the big companies with revenues that really won't see much decline, or will pick up after this outbreak. their stock prices will eventually bounce back. and you will be getting them at a MASSIVE discount in the next 2 weeks. microsoft is already down 20 dollars. apple is down 50 dollars!!! (and this comes only after they reported the first two community spread corona virus cases in the U.S. and i’m sure in the following week(s) there will be news of more). anyway, these were overpriced stocks, due for a correction. they will continue to decline. and........ if you think these companies are still going to be around in 10-20 years, then... need i say more? you gotta buy.
if you bought microsoft in the 2008/2009 crash due to the housing bubble, it cost at its lowest around $17, if you bought it on the bounce, when the market started to recover, it was $20 or $30, $40 for all i care. as of 28 feb 2019, friday, after a horrendous week for the Dow and S&P500, it was still at $160. can you imagine? if you bought it at $40, that’s $120 in returns. (fun fact: at its highest, meaning just a few weeks ago, microsoft was around 180-190)
if you bought $1000 of microsoft at $40 and sold at $160, you would have got $3000 in total. if you bought $986 (the closest without going over $1000) worth of microsoft at $17, and you sold at $160, you would have made $9280 total. microsoft also gives you dividends. and if you reinvested, you would have made more.
in comparison, your banks give you like at the most 3% in a savings account (and this is me being nice. chase bank gives you something shitty like 0.01%. also just so you know this barely covers inflation which is ~2%). anyway, with compound interest over a 12 year period, in a bank your $1000 becomes $1425.76 if you keep it in a savings account. That’s a $425.76 return. this versus (over the same 12 year period) buying microsoft where you get $2000 in returns (if bought at $40) or $8294 in returns (if bought at $16). not counting the dividends (okay the dividends can be used to counter off your capital gains tax and you would still have more. you don’t pay the tax until you sell anyway!)
if you wanna play safe, then you can always wait until you’re comfortable and buy the ETFs when they are down (but also this is a very good plan, regardless). in 2019 alone, the S&P 500 saw a 30% gain.... your bank maybe gives you friggin 0.01% interest. the better ones give you nothing more than 3%. meanwhile the S&P500... 30% in one year alone. (ok fine that was an exceptional year. S&P500 on average returns 6-7%). imagine if you had invested after the financial crash in 2008, and you cashed out last week. or even if you cashed out on friday after the worst week for the Dow since the 2008 crash. you still would have made a killing. not to mention the dividends you got during the time you held it for 12 years. (but typically you hold these stocks for a long, long time. even through crashes like this, if you hold it over a 20-30 year period, you 99.9% of the time beat any stock picker, investment firms, hedge funds, you name it)
and no microsoft wont drop to $17 so don’t hope for that but think about this, microsoft probably won’t be worth $180 in another 12 years either. if it went from $17 to $180 in the last 12 years. where do you think it might go in the following 12 years? tesla went from $300 to $900 in the matter of 2 weeks so who the hell knows what will happen (different situation but you get what i mean).
also, never panic sell. NEVER. fear is not an investment strategy. hold, be patient, have faith. especially if you think you’re going to be alive for the next 15 years. have a strategy. you are playing the long game. you are investing, not trading.
major, major, major point here to remember: only invest money you aren’t afraid of losing. meaning don’t put $1000 in if that’s going to make you flat out broke if you lose it and force you to sleep in the streets in the near future. this is money you think you can lose and you won’t die or it won’t make you suffer if you lose it. invest only what you can afford. but just please invest (wisely).

Orkin vs Terminix
Tumblr media
When you think of pest control companies, Orkin and Terminix are two of the biggest names in the industry. Over the years, these comprehensive pest control companies have built their brand and expanded their knowledge and catalogues of pests covered. They are each solid options for pest control, whether you’re dealing with common household pests, or trickier insects like termites and bed bugs. But which company is the right choice for you? Ultimately, we recommend both Orkin and Terminix, each for their own reasons. Orkin is a thorough company that offers the most customer resources and information, while Terminix has the best customer service. Read on to find out how each compares and see which one is the right fit for your needs. If you’d like to receive a free quote from Orkin, call 877-871-4573, or fill out a simple form. If Terminix is the way you want to go, call 866-458-5559, or at this form.
Orkin vs Terminix Overview
Orkin and Terminix each have extensive histories in the pest control industry. Orkin has been in the business for over 100 years. Its pest control specialists have to undergo a rigorous, 160-hour targeted training program, and they serve over 1.7 million residential and commercial customers. Orkin is incredibly transparent about its services online, breaking down the steps and even noting specific products and treatments. Orkin stands out for its huge array of online resources, in keeping with its commitment to give suggestions and recommendations to its customers. Online, customers can find a thorough pest library, bug bite photo gallery, and many links to blog pages they’ve written about specific pests. Terminix has over 90 years of experience, and was the first company to ever obtain a termite control patent. Its pest specialists include graduate-level entomologists and certified members of the Entomological Society of America. Terminix serves over 1 million more customers than Orkin, with a total of 2.8 million residential and commercial customers. Terminix rises above the rest in terms of customer service. Orkin vs Terminix Plans
Orkin and Terminix each offer general pest control, as well as termite control and bed bug removal. Each company also offers other specific plans for mosquitoes and ticks. General pest control—pests covered There is a lot of overlap over the common household pests that Orkin and Terminix protect against in their general pest control plans. The companies identify these particular pests online and over the phone, but note that some others may be included. Orkin Moths Crickets Fleas Hornets Scorpions Ants Silverfish Roaches Mice Spiders Centipedes Earwigs Terminix Clothes moths Rodents Roaches Scorpions House ants Silverfish Mice Spiders (non-poisonous) Centipedes Earwigs House crickets Millipedes Paper wasps For both pest control companies, the treatment plan starts with an initial visit and inspection, and is followed up by incremental scheduled visits, either bi-monthly or quarterly, depending on the plan and company. Different plan breakdowns are offered in different locations. Both Orkin and Terminix offer guarantees. The Orkin 30-Day Money Back Guarantee and Terminix 100% Satisfaction Guarantee both ensure that a technician will return to your home at no extra cost if you pests return between scheduled appointments, and they will refund your last payment, so long as you stay a customer. Termite control Orkin and Terminix each offer comprehensive, targeted termite treatment plans. Orkin Orkin follows a three-step A.I.M. process, or Assess, Implement, and Monitor. This process involves an initial, extensive inspection of your woodwork with state-of-the-art equipment like IR thermometers, followed by a treatment recommendation and custom-tailored plan. After the needed treatments, Orkin will create a Continuous Protection Plan to prevent future infestations. To combat termites, Orkin uses Termidor liquid treatments, dry foam and Orkinfoam, and sentricon bait and monitoring. If termites return, the Re-Treatment Program guarantees Orkin will eliminate them at no extra cost. Terminix Terminix also breaks down its termite tackling process into a trio of teps. First, Terminix conducts a thorough inspection of your interior and exterior, paying close attention to potential access points. Your technician will then develop a customized treatment or protection plan, then conduct annual reviews. Terminix’s termite methods include its own proprietary OnGuard Protection System bait stations and various liquid solutions. For qualifying homes, Terminix offers the Ultimate Protection Guarantee, ensuring you never have to pay for treatments or repairs from new termite damage, as long as you keep your plan. Bed bug removal Orkin and Terminix both offer targeted bed bug removal options. Here’s how they stack up. Orkin As with its termite program, Orkin utilizes its A.I.M. approach for bed bugs, subbing beds, furniture, rugs, and linens for woodwork. After your treatment, Orkin will come back for follow-up visits to make sure that bed bugs won’t return. Terminix For bed bug removal, Terminix starts with an extensive inspection before removing visible bed bugs and eradicating hidden ones and any eggs before they hatch, using a variety of methods, including its non-toxic RapidFreeze solution. Terminix’s Bed Bug Guarantee means that if you find bed bugs within the treated area within 30 days, Terminix will return for additional, free treatments until the matter is resolved. If you buy a mattress encasement for all mattresses and box springs in your house, the guarantee will be extended to 90 days. Mosquito service Depending on where you live, mosquito services can be extremely useful. Orkin Orkin protects against Zika, Chikungunya, and West Nile by implementing several treatments to interrupt the mosquitoes’ life cycle in either monthly or one-time applications. These applications include microbial insecticides, traditional insecticides, and insect growth regulators. Terminix Terminix follows an Inspect, Kill, Protect, and Maintain protocol through monthly applications of a targeted treatment. This treatment has a key active ingredient with a special polymer layer that keeps it from washing away due to weather and lawn watering, allowing for weeks-long protection. Tick Control Ticks can turn your yard into a nightmare. Luckily, Orkin and Terminix have a solution. Orkin Orkin offers its A.I.M. process, inspecting ideal tick hang-outs like tall grass and heavily wooded areas before creating a treatment plan and performing follow-up visits. Terminix Terminix follows an Inspect, Prevent, Treat, and Maintain protocol, including a monthly service. After a thorough inspection of your yard, Terminix makes recommendations to make your yard less appealing to ticks and applies liquid and granular treatments to create a barrier.
Locations
Orkin and Terminix are both available in 47 states. Orkin is available everywhere except for Alaska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Terminix does not service Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Alaska.
Cost
It’s hard to estimate the exact cost comparison, because what you’ll pay ultimately depends on the type of pest you’re dealing with, the degree of infestation, the size and location of your home, and how many individual treatments you will need. In order to get the most accurate quote, Orkin and Terminix will need to perform an inspection of your home. Orkin’s general pest control cost for a 2,000-square-foot home would range from $790-$980. Terminix’s general pest control plan for a home of the same size would range from $550-$700.
Customer Reviews
Orkin and Terminix both have mixed reviews online. Each has multiple pages with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for different branch locations. Orkin’s BBB ratings vary from page to page, while Terminix’s pages hold a consensus of A-. While Orkin has some inconsistencies, its owner Rollins’ headquarters page is BBB-accredited with an A rating. Its reviews are mixed. Christopher W. said: “Shreveport Louisiana Office Inspector Damien M******* came out at my request to perform a termite inspection. Mr. M******* was very professional. He completed a thorough inspection of my home. After the inspection, Damien presented me with a diagram of my home and termite prevention options. I elected to go with the baiting system. On the day of installation, I met with Damien and Josh. Josh performed the baiting system and was very knowledgeable and did an excellent job. Kudos to the Orkin Shreveport office!! The Termite Team is jam up and jelly tight!!!” Elmer H. said: “I had them come out to do an initial rat termination service for me, and before they performed the service they had me sign a contract for a one-year service agreement without providing me with detailed information about the one-year plan. They told me my initial service would entail at least four follow ups without a charge. However, when I later cancelled my year service contract within the 72 hour ( Washington State law gives a consumer the right to cancel a contract within 72 hours) period allowed by law; I received a call from Orkin inquiring why I canceled, and I told them why. I was informed by Orkin that I would still receive 2 free follow up visits as part of Orkin initial service. Orkin then scheduled an appointment for me and did not keep the appointment at the appointed time. I called them the next day to find out and they told me since I cancelled my service I was getting my promised free followup as promised.” Terminix’s headquarters page shares the A- rating and has mixed reviews, as well. Lisa F. said: “Terminix is a company you can depend on for quality service, professional employees, and great products that really work to kill pests around your home. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs pest control. Our technician, Ronald***** R****, has been amazing! Very courteous, informative, always explains what is being done. I was concerned about having treatment with our animals but he assured me that it is not going to hurt them. I have never been told that with any other company and it actually is true. We had an ant issue that was not on our scheduled service month and Ronald **** R**** came out as soon as possible. He was not only able to get rid of the ants but keep them away. I will always use Terminix because of the kindness and respect I receive from my technician, The service is affordable and it works!” Eric B. said: “Terminix customer service is nonexistent. I had an appointment for termite inspection on 3/16/2020, and when nobody showed up I called the service center and was rescheduled for 3/17/2020 between 8 and 10 am. Again nobody showed up so I called again and asked for a supervisor and was told there were no supervisors at that location, they would take my information and I will get a call in the next 48 hours. (Really) I guess that Terminix thinks it’s no problem for people to miss work two days in a row just waiting to see if they may show up if they feel like coming. They cant even make a phone call to let the customer know they will not be coming. With no supervisor at the call center I guess that they just don;t care about customer service.”
Orkin vs Terminix Verdict
As you can see, each company offers comprehensive services, nearly a century or over a century of experience, and money-back, satisfaction guarantees. Their general pest control plans and approach to pests like termites, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and ticks, appear similar. In terms of differences, from our sample quotes, we do find that Terminix skews cheaper, has more consistent ratings, more customers, and offers a very efficient online chat function. Orkin, on the other hand, has more experience, more nationwide availability, and a greater number of customer resources. If you’d like to get a quote from Orkin, call 877-871-4573, or fill out a simple form. If it’s Terminix that’s piqued your interest, you can reach the company at 866-458-5559, or at this form. Writing Report March 29, 2020
This will come as a shock and surprise to many of you, I know, but the coronavirus is wreaking havoc with my writing schedule.
I’m fine (as of this writing), my wife is fine, all our family members are fine.  For that we’re truly glad and grateful.
But between social distancing and family obligations (nothing serious, just time consuming) my daily output has dropped dramatically.
I’ve also seen several markets I’d submitted to either implode or suddenly close or just va_n__i__s____h without a trace.
Which sets me to thinking about the future of (a) freelance fiction writing in general and (b) my own creative strategies as well.
I occasionally think I spend more time and effort trying to place my short stories than I do writing them.
Certainly with various market restrictions, I spend an inordinate amount of time researching the markets.
One certainly can’t make a living off of short fiction (I think Harlan Ellison was the last person to support themselves solely through freelance short fiction and that was 1955-57).  Freelance fiction writers can survive, obviously, but they range much further afield than the confines of the short fiction market.  Without longform fiction, television, comics / graphic novels, video games, and other venues, none of us could support ourselves off freelance short fiction.
So the huge hiccup we’re going through right now will visit far ranging change on us, much of which already started prior to the appearance of the coronavirus but now accelerated upon its arrival.
The old model for short fiction / essays / poems was for a publisher to arrange financing, assemble a publication (magazine or original anthology), delivery said publication to a distributor, and live off the proceeds.  (I’m leaving out a lot of steps and variables, of course, but those are the basics).
The financing could come in many forms, either an advance from a larger publisher / distributor / investor or a loan based on contracts and letters of commitment.  One of the best bits of advice I received when I was trying to decide whether to do the Serenity Christian manga project as either original graphic novels or a monthly came in the form of a question:  Do you want to spend all your time creating, or do you want to spend all your time chasing down advertisers?
I preferred the former to the later, yet even then I spent an enormous amount of time and effort into tracking down a suitable publishing partner.
So I commiserate with all those publishers and editors out there trying to make a go of it on shoestring budgets with minimum or non-existent staffs:  I feel for you.  Truly.
But I also recognize the light at the end of that particular tunnel is a train.
Already alternatives to traditional publishing let writers find a loyal audience and get paid for it.
I’m aware of sites like Wattpad and Medium and Smashwords but frankly haven’t investigated them in depth.
To my old(er) eyes, I see the danger of clouded rights issues, reliability in accounting, and frankly just seeming desperate.
Yet those same eyes can’t deny thousands of writers use them and attract tens of thousands of readers and in more instances than one would expect, money flows ///towards/// the writer.
(Siderbar:  Don’t never EVER enter a creative contest that requires an entry fee or submit to a market that charges a submission fee.  If you won’t listen to me, listen to Uncle Harlie.)
So clearly a sea change is already underway and the coronavirus is the tsunami wave that finishes the job.
Look, I’m fortunate insofar that between our Social Security and Soon-ok’s pension, we have enough to live comfortably on for the rest of our lives.  Holy shamolley, do I ever realize how fortunate and privileged we are in that aspect.
But the short fiction market already is barely cost effective.  My genre fiction goes first to the biggest / most prestigious markets.  Originally I planned to limit each submission to the top five markets, then post them online here if I couldn’t place them.
The drawbacks with that are the aforementioned market restrictions (many markets today will only accept one submission at a time from a writer) and the ever continuing ebb and flow of specialty markets where one might have a chance (indeed, I’ve sold several stories because an original market opens for stories specifically about left-handed truck drivers and by chance I happen to have a left-handed truck driver story [or the equivalent thereof] in the trunk].
Those of you visit here frequently know I’ve been writing fictoids (a.k.a. flash fiction or short-short stories).
While I’d written fictoids before, this current crop got their start from a Christmas gift I received from a grandson.
I really enjoy these, and when I can find a chance to sit down and writer them (their first draft is always by hand) I can crank out two to six an evening after my more formal writing.
These are shared freely on my blog because at 350-400 words, they’re not really cost effective for market submission.
If I could place a 400 word fictoid at the highest paying market for that sort of fiction, I’d net 40-cents a word for $160.
That’s a lot for a little, to be sure, but rates drop precipitously after that (not to mention that market publishes only three or four times a year).
$32 for a fictoid? Not great, but okay.
$4 for a fictoid?   Uhh, no…
Let them publish it for free?
Why should they benefit off my work but not me?
No, fictoids are cost effectively only as loss leaders to attract eyeballs here and possibly interest people in my longer work.
My longer short fiction (i.e., everything from 1,000 to 9,999 words; there’s a variety of opinion on what the boundaries of short story and novelette / novella lengths should be but for our purposes I’m limiting short fiction to that range) tends to be more satisfying, but those markets are drying up.
Sc-fi / fantasy / horror are much more viable markets than mystery / crime.  Other markets are so scarce I can’t find reliable information on them (this would include general and mainstream humor fiction).  The literary markets all offer their own particular shoals to navigate, and while they can pay well, again, those markets are far and few between.
So I’m thinking of steering away from conventional short fiction (i.e., 1,000 to 9,999) and focus exclusively on long form (i.e., novels and novellas I can offer via Kindle), using the fictoids on this blog to attract readers to the longer works.
(Speaking of which, I’m about a year ahead on my fictoids; they’re loaded up and set to appear one a week from now into 2021 with more to come after that.  So if I keel over in the near future, you’re still going to be seeing new fictoids into early 2021 at the least.)
None of this will preclude me from writing short stories that fall between fictoid and novella lengths, but that’s going to require perfect happenstances (good idea + time to write).
The other thing to consider is that with the old model publishing market being so badly shaken up, new opportunities in new formats will be opening up.
Which one of those will be viable in turns of adequate readership, etc.?  How many prose based venues will be open as opposed to drama and media based?
We are in, as the Chinese would say, for interesting times.

I need help D:
So... the past few months had been rough on me in financial terms. Let me first lay out some basic info. I... only make about $600 per month on average. X'D;; Although yes, living expenses in Malaysia are cheaper, the medical here is also cheaper, I'm living with my parents so I don't need to pay rental. (some would say that I HAVE TO live with my parents because I can't afford to get my own place lmao. Although, I do give my parents money every month because Asian kids have to, whether you live at home or not) But at the end of the day, I only make $600 per month. I've always been doing okay, living at the edge of poverty all this time. I am a freelance painter. Half of my income comes from miniature painting. The other half from Etsy sales and other sales. (sometimes guest arting for adopts help) But I've really been struggling the past few months. In May I brought my car into the workshop for a small electrical problem, they subsequently found a lot more problems and the bill ended up costing like $200+. In June, I finally went in to check a dental problem I have. I've been delaying it ever since January because I don't have extra money to see a dentist!! Good news, my wisdom tooth came out straight, bad news, my root canal's filling was botched at the free clinic. I got a new filling, but I would need crowning. That bill ended up costing about $80 and the crowning will cost me an additional $250 in the future. Which... I will probably only do when this filling falls apart lol orz. Then earlier this month, my hind-paralyzed kitty got a nasty UTI and had to go on a special diet. The vet bill and the special diet costed me $100. Even if these numbers doesn't look like a lot compared to bills in the US, it is a lot considering how much I make per month!
And now, I might need to change my phone battery soon. I found out last year that the battery is bloated, and the screen might needed changing too? But I just didn’t have the free funds to get a new one, or a quote for that matter. XD In March it started dying more rapidly. And now it’s picking up pace orz. Idk how much that would be yet but I’m scared lmao. But I suppose getting it fixed is cheaper than getting a new phone... I'm usually kind of prepared for sudden expenses/bills, but not at a monthly basis!! So I'm really desperate, as I'm already scraping the bottom of my bank account. And I really need your help! Here are ways to help...
Tumblr media
https://www.etsy.com/shop/skyejuice?section_id=26695527 I've dug out all my craft supplies, gemstones, and whatnot. And are destashing/letting them go for cheap on my Etsy shop. Please feel free to look through!! And please buy some!!
Tumblr media
https://www.etsy.com/shop/CommanderMittensCo I have really cute pokemon stickers here that you can buy!
Tumblr media
https://ko-fi.com/kyoupi You can donate on my Ko-fi? TuT
Tumblr media
https://www.paypal.me/SkyejuiceStudio Or you can donate directly to me on my Paypal. That is fine as well. Every little bit helps!! I'm looking to get at least around $400 to feel more comfortable about the months to come. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! TuT 160/400
