Victor Brauner no es tan conocido hoy en día, aunque fue una gran influencia en el estilo. Nació en Rumania en los primeros años del siglo XX. En 1930, temiendo el ascenso del fascismo en Rumanía, vino a París, conoció a Yves Tanguy y se convirtió en parte del grupo surrealista.

Sus pinturas de la década de 1930 son un tour-de-force surrealista, articulando un estilo que fue muy influyente en los pintores posteriores. TheIndicator of Space

data de 1934. Aquí, un extraño dispositivo mecánico, en forma humanoide, envuelto en una tela verde, señala una dirección. Se agregan otros elementos para intrigar y desafiar al espectador, como el agujero en el pavimento de tablero de ajedrez por el que se ve un pie, una pequeña esfera colocada en un hueco en el patrón del pavimento y una figura ambigua en el fondo detrás de una pared.

Otro cuadro de la misma época, Kabyline en movimiento, utilizó imágenes similares. Brauner crea una imagen que nos cuesta entender, una tensión entre la claridad de sus imágenes y la falta de una narrativa para conectar los componentes. Esta exhibición desconcertante y enigmática de imágenes se convirtió en un dispositivo clave del surrealismo.

En 1937 pintó La ciudad que sueño. en el que nos lleva a un paisaje urbano inspirado en De Chirico, completo con una perspectiva distorsionada. Los edificios de su ciudad son grandes, fuera de escala, formas derivadas de objetos comunes, un zapato, un torso femenino, una mano, un pie y una cabeza esculpida. Esta podría haber sido una obra bastante poco interesante si no fuera por su representación de la figura uniformada, como un director de orquesta militar, de pie frente al cubo blanco y haciendo un gesto hacia los edificios de la ciudad. Esto nos involucra de inmediato como espectadores y nos brinda un enfoque. No hay necesidad de una narración.
