So I only recently started writing again, meaning I've only got 2 works that are from the last decade, but honestly I'm still very fond of those older ones; they do an excellent job at being what they are.

Doing the no pressure tags above the cut because I don't know if that messes them up: @stonemaskedtaliesin, @zyrafowe-sny, and @firecoloredwater, plus anyone else who sees this and has written something! Hyping yourself up is good practice!

Columbo: Turnabout's Fair Play | 19k (Incomplete) | T | Columbo x Ace Attorney set between AA3 and AA4

Summary:

Technically speaking, Mr. Wright, this isn't my usual beat. But Detective Gumshoe - you know Dick, right? - I owed him a favor, see? And it had been a slow week, so I figured I'd look around, see if I could give the guy a hand. Real stand-up guy, he is, we could use more like him. And anyway, I know you're a real busy guy Mr. Wright, so I'll make this real quick, get out of your hair. I know you and he were real good friends, so I'm sure this is a difficult time for you. Oh, uh, just one more thing Mr. Wright. Why were the two of you such good friends again?

As I say in the dedication, this is the idea that helped me break a very, very long dry spell, so it has to take the top spot for that if nothing else. @stonemaskedtaliesin had introduced me to Ace Attorney, I had introduced them to Columbo, and at some point they went looking to see if there were any crossovers and were disappointed to find none. They come tell me this in discord and I, like a fool, say:

"Well, actually, it makes sense there aren't any. I mean, they're kind of contradictory worldviews. The whole point of Columbo is that he always gets the right guy, and the whole point of Ace Attorney is that the police never get the right guy."

Fortunately for all of us, I continued:

"I mean, for it to even work you'd need some kind of convoluted setup - maybe that would stop the AA police from just arresting someone immediately. And who would be the killer anyway? Well, ok, there's an option there, but who should they murder? Maya? That'd be mean, but that's the obvious choice. Hmm...nobody likes him, I could murder him, but how--oh."

And at that point I stopped talking because the end of this story materialized in my brain and I wanted to make sure it was a surprise. Spoiler culture may be overblown, but murder mysteries are an exception, I feel.

Anyways, if you're a fan of either series, enjoy gen fic, like seeing characters get what they deserve, or just want to see Columbo at an anime convention, this is the fic for you! From a writing standpoint, it's been really fun to experiment with a very limited POV, to try to mimic the feel of a television camera. And of course, Columbo's dialogue is a joy to write. (As you'll see later, dialogue is one of my strengths)

Summary:

There were reports of something in the skies of eastern Ylisse. Something with wings as black as pitch and eyes as red as rubies. Dark Pit has no clue where he's managed to land himself, but it turns out that Pit and Palutena don't have a monopoly on annoying. He can leave these humans anytime he wants, and he will. Soon. Any day now. If the Shepherds have it their way, that day won't come any time soon. (In which Dark Pit ends up joining the Shepherds, and the world tilts.)

The original fic is @stonemaskedtaliesin's, but I like to consider myself its honorary godparent. We've spent a lot of time worldbuilding for it, and it's so good you guys. It's going to be amazing. There are long term plans.

I started the podfic because I wanted to listen to it as I fell asleep. The audio quality is definitely shakier in the first couple chapters as I figure things out, but it's been really fun learning new skills and doing lots of fun silly voices.

...still need to finish editing chapter 5.

Anyway, blanket recommendation to go read this if you know anything about Kid Icarus (Fire Emblem is a bonus but not necessary, iit's pretty well-explained in-story) and if you like podfic, hey! You're in luck! Fun fact: this is the only Awakening podfic as of right now. Yes I'm also surprised. Maybe if I ever finish this one I'll set out to try and change that. goat milk and oats Grima would be so much fun to voice.

Warrior Cats Smoofs | 8.5k | G | Gen | Warrior Cats

Okay I'm kind of cheating here but that's going to be a theme for these last few answers. I wrote these over a decade ago with my best friend at the time. She had internet, I didn't, so we had a joint account on the Warrior Cats Wiki and the Warriors Fanfiction Wiki, which are both Fandom now I believe. I archived them to AO3 because of that, and because even years later they would occasionally get a new comment from someone who really enjoyed reading them. And, as I said, I'm still very fond of them. My handle on most of the internet still comes from these stories and that account. They are simple, silly, dialogue and stage directions only parodies, and they were a blast to write. I still remember the melody we came up with for the ending jingle. I'm pretty sure these guys (plus the playwriting class I took) are a big part of why I tend to be very dialogue-heavy. I like fun purple-prosy descriptions, but sometimes a few spoken words can convey a whole lot of actions. Show Don't Tell taken to the extreme, I guess.

I'm pretty sure The Library was our most popular one back in the day (to the point we made a sequel)! The Auction was the first (though doesn't hold up quite as well...lol they're all 15 years old anyway). I'm very fond of Christmas Caroling because all the lyrics are singable and that is my PET PEEVE IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO IT THE METER HAD BETTER BE RIGHT OR AT LEAST CLOSER THAN A CATHOLIC HYMN. Most of all though, I'm fond of all the memories these have. I don't know where Moss is now, but I hope they're doing well. It is also fun to see where I've come from over the years - like I said, upon reflection it makes sense that I tend to default to pretty dialogue-heavy.

The Palutena Trap | 4.7k (Incomplete) | T | Gen (past Palutena/Medusa | Kid Icarus Uprising

Summary:

Kid Icarus meets the Parent Trap.

That's it, that's all I've got.

Ok now this one is cheating because it's not published anywhere yet except in snippets on tumblr. This was actually conceived at almost the same time as Turnabout's Fair Play, but I'm trying to only focus at one at a time, so this one won't properly see the light of day until TFP is finished. (We're getting there! We're almost at the end of Act 2 out of 3!!) That does mean that I'm going about writing it in a very different way - there's going to be lots and lots of editing once I finally set down to publish this. Which is probably for the best - I'm sure there are bits of tfp that would be better if I wrote the whole thing and then went back to edit.

My favorite part of this story is still the normal-people jobs I've given everyone, since this is technically a modern AU. We have an investigative journalist who lives on a yacht, mob boss, butler who's retired MI6, and front woman for a punk band which is actually a front for an eco-terrorist group, for example. I talk more about this story here and here. Aside from that, my favorite thing is exploring the relationship between Dark Pit and Lady Palutena, and between Lady Palutena and Medusa.

The former gets off on the worst possible foot in canon, and it's only ever obliquely addressed, so it's a lot of fun to play with and extrapolate from. In this version, Dark Pit is a child whose mother gave up everything to do with him (and said some pretty nasty things in the court record). So that's where we stand: how do you reckon with that? What does it mean that you still want some kind of relationship, or at least answers? What is family and blood, in the end?

The latter relationship is one that's...well, I wouldn't say it's canon, but it's definitely canon-compliant. It's rather like Narumitsu, in that I look at it and go "hm. whatever is going on between those two, they're not normal about each other." This is true in canon, and if anything it's less true in The Palutena Trap, since despite the name the story is not about getting the parents back together so much as reconciling a mother and son. But the more this idea ferments in my brain the more I want to have some kind of meeting at the end. Maybe it goes badly, maybe it goes less badly, but I have this mental image in my head: Imagine the messiest divorce you've ever seen. Ugly, dragged through the papers, all kinds of legal issues, you part ways never to speak again. You hate her guts, and you can't go a month without thinking about her because she's always got Yet Another Stupid News Article coming out. You find out your kids have been playing some switcheroo on you, and when you meet her again you're coldly civil, both of you clearly holding yourselves back from starting a slugfest in the local forum, and then you see: she's still wearing your wedding ring. The one you picked out, the one you put on her finger 14 years ago. I just. IDK they're not normal about each other and the complexity and ambiguity of it compels me.

Vaguely Remembered 2nd Grade Writing Assignment | like 2 pages maybe | G | Gen | The Land Before Time

Alright this one's definitely cheating but this has already been a lot of reminiscing about the past, so here's a toast to the very first thing I ever wrote: an adventure story starring the main cast of The Land Before Time. All I remember about it is it absolutely sucked to get started but once I did it was longer than it needed to be and I used the word Petrie-ball™. Yes, including the ™. The Petrie-ball™ was how they solved the big obstacle, I think. Like I said, I don't remember much of it, but I remember how proud and happy I felt when it was done. So here's to you, long-forgotten fanfiction adventure story. Here's to the first of many, with many more to follow after.

oh man, I apparently really love to jump right into the middle of a scene. Start with an action or dialogue, very straightforward but hopefully intriguing. I try to reveal setting and characters through their interactions rather than with descriptions from a narrator, what the character sees and hears is what the audience sees and hears.

Megumi / Sukuna | Explicit

This fic feels a little weird for me, I can't get a clear view of it because I wrote it over a space in time where I felt like something was changing in the way that I write (still in it, tbh), but there are parts of it I'm really in love with, even if there are a few that feel iffy as well.

Zen’in Megumi is an amusement. Something to toy with; twist and squeeze and bend until he breaks. He is also a threat, a rare and sincere one, and the thought of what he might become—more than just promise, more than potential, more than the mere possibility of being brought to heel—is perhaps the most tantalizing idea Sukuna has come across in all his years spent languishing amongst the chaos he creates. Unfortunately, something still holds Megumi back. Or rather, he still holds back something within, and Sukuna cannot fathom why he allows himself to go to such waste. Megumi breaks the monotony of Sukuna's lifestyle of lavish violence with his potential to become a worthy opponent. Sukuna will see that said potential is realized for the sake of his own amusement, and wring whatever else he can from Megumi in the meantime.

Hashirama / Mito | General

Okay, honestly, this fic was SO outside of my typical box. It's sweet, it's soft, it's not explicit in the least, and it's canon abiding! And yet? It turned out to be one of the most naturally flowing things I've ever written. It was for an event that had a limited word count, so in retrospect, there are a few things I'd like to let breathe more, but it's not the end of the world, I'm still very happy with it.

Mito’s mother has been gone nearly a month. When she returns home, she returns with many stories to tell of the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Hope colours more of her words than Mito might have expected for a land so recently war-torn, and when she dismisses everyone from their company for evening tea and hands Mito a scroll sealed with the stamp of the Leaf, she understands that it was for her own sake.

The first chapter was a total indulgence in making Tobirama the worst version of himself that exists in my head, and I've always been very pleased with how it turned out. He's a HUGE bastard. Enjoy.

“I think,” he crouches in front of her, takes her jaw in hand and squeezes until he can feel the bruises blooming under her skin, “that before you are your brother’s sister, you are my wife. Alright, last but very much not least, this series is my baby. Which does make it a little bit insane that I haven't published anything for it in about a year and a half.

When Naruto ended, I hated the epilogue, and I spent years afterwards considering what might be a more fulfilling ending for the characters. Eventually, this series took shape and I ended up with an outline totalling about 60k (rip). I wrote the first part, published it, and then life happened.

Now, I'm actually pretty glad for the delay, because the story definitely lacked direction and depth and it was going to be way too long for those not to be staples. I've done an unreasonable amount of revision to the outline, and I'd like to revise part 1 a little bit as well, and then get back to writing this in the new year once all of my other WIPs are done and dusted.

When the chaos of war has abated and the dust settles, there's nothing left but rubble and ash. All they can do is rebuild. A large-scale alternative epilogue.

Cursed Eyes AU plot bunny

it came from the looong list of plot bunny docs

This is meant to be an inverse of the common trope “Red eyes are Blessed”. It came up in discussing the trope with @denialcity and @firecoloredwater, who have an absolutely stunning fic with that trope, the Blessed Sacrifice AU (which everyone should go read right because the worldbuilding is AMAZING).

Anyway, here’s a snippet from my Cused Eyes AU.

Concept:

They say red eyes are a warning from the gods—a warning of the greatest sin done, or the sin yet to come. After all, the gods would not bestow those red eyes on anyone other than a bloodline thief. An eye thief. Someone cursed to grasp for what can never be theirs. The Uchiha, of course, see it as their sacred duty to remove this evil from the world.

The river changes many things. Too many.

There are good things, too—Niisan has the Sharingan! So early! Even his former friendship with a Senju might be forgiven for that.

But what cannot be forgiven is Senju Butsuma’s youngest remaining son. Eyestealer, the Clan already whispers. Cursed by the gods with the vivid warning about his crime either past or yet to come. Only those who would commit the foulest of crimes are cursed with bearing those red eyes, so that the Uchiha may be warned in time.

No one wants to stain their hands with that blood, afraid it will bring misfortune and the very thing they fear on them, and yet it’s the Uchiha’s sacred duty to kill them. A duty that the Clan Head family has always taken up… but Izuna swallows and looks at his family. Tousan, who seem determined, yet there’s an unfamiliar tightness to his shoulders and the corner of his eyes that makes Izuna think of his two brothers buried in the last year. And Madara… he may not be Senju Hashirama’s friend anymore—it’s for the best—but Izuna knows with sudden, bone-chilling certainty that if he has to kill Hashirama’s last brother, something inside him will break.

“I’ll do it,” Izuna says instead, interrupting a low-voiced discussion between his father and his brother. “Let me do it.”

Madara immediately tries to dissuade from it. Izuna remains stubborn. “It makes more sense for me to do it.”

Their father looks thoughtful. “It might be for the best, Madara,” he eventually says. “Because of the age—Izuna’s and the... cursed one’s—there will be some leeway. He’ll have more time.” Tousan straightens up and puts a hand on Izuna’s shoulder. “Yes. You’ll have more time.”

And Izuna does have more time—even the most strict of the Elders are loath to send such a young second Clan Heir onto the front lines without enough preparation, it seems. And Izuna is optimistic: he'll train really hard and then he'll kill Butsuma's cursed son and make sure he never can steal any eyes.

Everything will be fine! His Clansmen seem to believe so, too, because Izuna gets to train with a lot of different people and the blacksmiths’ even make a sword just for him! He learns so many new jutsu in a short time! Tobirama will be dead very soon.

Part of Prompts for Pride 2023, this story was written for @greencuttingmat who requested:

something about pair singing? senju vs uchiha have different songs? so the response was like... wrong.

It's also for @firecoloredwater and @codedredalert who wrote a little bit of background world building that has lived rent free in my head ever since I first read it, and who kindly gave permission for me to make it into a story.

Madara: 🎵 If you're happy and you know it clap your hands 🎵 — and then you clap here Hashirama: /enthusiastic applause/ Madara: NO

Madara takes a deep breath as he stands up, feeling the eyes of his clan upon him.

He - they - have practised for this moment since they were children, though Hashirama does not know the whole of it, and he fervently hopes all those years of effort will bear fruit.

Help me out with something. I have a distinct memory of one of the pern books mentioning either dragons or firelizards going between while in the egg, and this being the reason why hatchlings can be sort of scatterbrained. Did I hallucinate this? Did my brain make this up? It feels like my brain had to have made it up, but I clearly remember it.

Hesitation - Critical Hit Included not because I'm still particularly fond of the writing in it, I've definitely improved a lot since then, but because the era of me writing for Critical Hit and the audience of 'literally myself because i need to get the ideas out of my head, and if other people even SEE this it will be so cool' was very formative for how I approach writing now. Summary:

The portal home stands open, but Ket, unclear on what he’s meant to do, hesitates. In just one moment, his window of opportunity has passed. And that is how Ket spends the next five years trapped in the feywild with one Orem Rivendorn.

My Boyfriend is (not) a Vigilante- BNHA I just still think I was so silly for this... It was just very fun to write. I feel like if I had to pick a most underrated fic of mine (at least for this fandom) it would be this one. Summary:

In which pro-hero Chargebolt takes the night shift, meets a cute guy, gets radicalized, and totally forgets that underground heroes exist.

Just a Concerned Citizen -BNHA ...The popularity of this one kind of speaks for itself, I think. It's the first fic where I got an idea, sat down, and wrote the whole outline, and its not perfect, but I think it feels more cohesive story-wise than anything that came before it. Plus its long and it's DONE. Summary:

Midoriya Izuku is a normal, quirkless, college drop-out. He's not a vigilante. Everything he does is perfectly above board and totally legal -- He's double checked. It would be nice if everyone else could see it that way, though. (Izuku becomes an informant, sort of. Trouble follows.)

Hand Over Hand Over Hand - Naruto (Founders) Oops, an unfinished fic slipped in here. Weirdly it's sort of the opposite of the last fic, where the outline is so much more vague than I normally make, but I like writing it, and I like thinking about it, and it is my sincere hope that I can make something good enough that it will make people ship the pairing(s) involved like I do.

Summary:

Uchiha Hikaku, asked by his clan head to join his household as a dignified beta, does not think of saying anything other than yes, knowing he will have no opportunity to ever be closer to Madara than this. His duties will include caring for the household, including Madara's new mate. Which is perfectly fine, Hikaku can deal with that easily. At least, he can until Tobirama turns out to be nothing like he expected, in ways that really shouldn't be a problem, but are. It is a decision he may, or may not, come to regret.

The Bandage the Holds Together - Naruto (Founders) One of those fics that was just an idea that wouldn't let me go until it was written, but this one was actually at a reasonable scope. For the first chapter, then I thought "what about Hikaku's POV" and did it AGAIN, and it turns out the difference in how characters think about stuff is fun to think about. Summary:

Soulmates are rare and prized in the world of shinobi. The healing and implicit loyalty always makes for something powerful and prized -- and not something that's supposed to be found between two members of an enemy clan. So, no. Tobirama wasn't expecting this.
