       Careful fingers continued weaving in flowers to the crown that they were working on. Two were complete and now they were finally completing their final one for the day. When Ari arrived to rest her head, they raised their arms up and resumed what they were doing, eyes not leaving the flowers. It wasn’t until she spoke that they took a small pause to look back down at the child, giving her a soft smile. “ Good afternoon, Princess Ari. Tell me what you see in the clouds. Can you see any shapes, animals, or maybe something else? ” 

       As they waited for a response, they briefly looked up to see if they could spot anything. “ That one looks like a butterfly. ” Not really but maybe she’d be able to make out a figure in the clouds. When they finally completed their work, they placed the flower crown on Ari’s head ( as best as they could since she was lying down ). After picking up the other two, they carefully handed them to their little sister, “ Here. I made one for Momo and Oda. Tell them that you made them. I’m sure they’d love that. ”

" Kao's heart is sss ... sad .. " she approaches her brother with a stuffed bear in hold, sitting in the spot of grass directly in front of them. little hands keep a gentle grasp on the bear as she places it in Kaoru's lap. " shhh ... Shuu makes Kao happy ... a ... and mr. Bear rrr ... re ... reminds me of Shuu lots ... www ... when I miss Shuu, I hold m - mr. Bear, and I squee ... squee-- I squeeze him. " then, hands squeeze the bears center -- squeak! it makes the sound similar to a dog toy. " w - would Kao like to hold m - mr. Bear, please ... ? "

       When a quiet voice broke through the silence, Kaoru raised their head up and met the gaze of the small child standing in front of them. Needing a small break before they resumed their playing, the teen decided to take the opportunity to doodle on their arm ( the one not covered with drawings already ). A coping mechanism that they relied on to help them during and after panic attacks, and other times, it helped to ground them when they felt an overwhelming rush of emotions. After that big fight with Oda, they had turned to drawing on their arms and even their brother’s. At some point, they were hoping to figure out what the next move would be. Apologize, obviously, but how would they even approach the other after displaying such poor and hostile behavior?

       Anyways, that entire mess had become something that Kaoru was determined to hide from Ari. Upon greeting her, they scooped her up and shared their plans for the day. A smile never left their face as they spent hours together. But, their mask had fallen during their small break time. Assuming that their little sister was preoccupied with some tiny friends in the grass, Kaoru’s mind wandered and replayed Oda’s words along with their own shameful physical reaction. The entire thing crushed their smile and briefly made them forget who was currently in their surroundings. But then, she spoke up and pulled them back to the present, one where they couldn’t run from their feelings. Ari, so observant.

       Kaoru wanted to ease Ari’s worry by stating that their heart wasn’t hurting ( which would have been a lie but one that the older brother felt had to be said aloud ) but before they could speak, she continued sharing. Closing the marker, they tucked the item away in the pocket of their skirt and then placed both hands on the bear. Hearing their boyfriend’s name made them smile and as she resumed, and then proceeded to squeeze the bear, causing a squeak to emit, the teen laughed quietly. That noise would probably drive Shuu up the wall. Didn’t help that Kaoru kept buying squeaky shoes for Ari. Oh well. 

       “ Thank you for sharing, Mr. Bear. I’m so lucky to have such a great little sister who shares with me. But... Y’know what? You said that Shuu makes me very happy, and he does because I love him very much but my little sister also makes me very happy. ” The bear was removed from their lap and handed back to Ari, in order to scoop up the tiny girl into their arms and set her down on their lap instead. Arms wrapped around her and Mr. Bear, embracing both for a few seconds before Kaoru loosened their hold and rested their chin on Ari’s little head.

       “ I really needed this. Thank you again, Princess Ari. ” A soft kiss would soon be placed where their chin had rested and after a few more seconds of silence, they cut through it with a wonderful idea in mind. “ Hey. How about we call Shuu and Momo and ask them to come over to play with us? I’m sure they’d love to meet Mr. Bear and I know they miss you so, so much. ” Spending time with three of their favorite people... It would definitely help to lessen the pain they felt in their heart. Maybe their other half and their best friend could keep them from dropping their mask and bringing their sister’s mood down. That’s not what they wanted so... They would be selfish and would rely on Shuu and Momo to help for the day. “ Also, it’s almost nap time and I know that you can’t go down for your nap without Shuu so let’s call him for that. You can get some rest with Mr. Bear and Mr. Shuu Bear, and when you wake up... We can play with Momo. It’ll be fun. So, who should we call first? ”

       “ And then the Winnie the Pooh said... ” The next line would be put on pause once a yawn escaped them. Removing a hand from the book, they rubbed their eyes in order to wake up and wipe away the tears that suddenly showed up. It seemed that the lack of sleep was catching up to them and without their daily coffee intake, they were struggling for the day. But, they were determined to push through the sleepiness and finish the story. 

       But then, another break had to be taken when Ari’s attention turned away from the book and to her big brother. Kaoru watched her, wondering what was going on in that mind of hers, and before a word could be said... She was holding their head with such gentle hands and placing a kiss to their head. Almost like magic, the drowsiness vanished. A Princess waking her Prince with the power of familial love through a simple kiss. 

       “ Thank you, Ari. ” Their arm wrapped around the small girl and pulled her close for a tight hug. When they finally loosened their hold, they placed a kiss to her forehead before instructing her to sit back down so they could finish the story. “ Okay. Where were we? Right! ” The upcoming sentence, a quote from Pooh himself, and so... The teen would do their best to imitate the character as they continued telling his story.

       Time to own up to their mistake and explain the situation in an easy to digest way. This was never supposed to become so serious. A joke. That’s all that it was. A stupid prank pulled by the mischievous Hitachiin. But one that had gone too far and now they had to make amends. Some closure had already happened with the person they had an issue with but now it was time to address the person who was affected by the stupidity of two teens ( well, technically, one since the twin had started it ). 

       So, there they were, sitting on the floor with legs crossed and a tissue box between themself and Ari. Maybe she wouldn’t need it but if she did, then it was there for her. Hands would rest on their knees as they formed the words that needed to be said aloud. This really had become so serious. Well, yeah, when they were responsible for making someone cry ( someone that they deeply cared about ), then it became a huge fucking deal. Okay. Time to fix things. As best as I can. 

       “ Ari, I need to tell you something. My whole truth. ” Amber eyes would land on her and would not glance away even if they felt the urge to look anywhere but. This moment was embarrassing for them. To have messed up so hugely. “ When Oda and I met… Things were not so nice. I was angry with him for some words that he said… ” They wouldn’t shit talk him, they wouldn’t mention that he started off coming at them so strongly in a negative way… This wasn’t about him. “ And I said really bad words to him. I got mad at him and I used bad words. I wasn’t nice to him and so… Our relationship became messy. But, it doesn’t mean that it will stay like that forever. I still mean what I said earlier to you. I will do my best to make a new friend and I said sorry to him already. We talked about what happened. He said sorry and I said sorry. It’s a small step and we’re both working on it. ”

       Working on what exactly? They weren’t quite sure. But something would happen there, right? Whether they tried becoming friends or kept their distance. Anyways, Ari didn’t need to know the details. “ That’s the truth with Oda. And now I want to talk to you. ” One hand moved and reached for hers as a way to get her full attention. 

       “ I am so sorry that I put that on you, Ari. I was playing a game, pulling a silly prank but I should have been more mature… More grown up. I shouldn’t have worried you like that. It’s not your responsibility… It’s not your job to fix these grown up problems. You’re six… Your job is to have fun, to grow, to make friends. So, I’m sorry for scaring you like that and for making you sad for me. Please. Don’t be sad for me. I’m okay. My heart doesn’t hurt. ” Their free hand rested over their heart as they said that last line. “ It doesn’t hurt. I’m really okay. And I’m so happy to hear that you like Oda. He’s good. He’s very nice. Maybe someday we can all spend time together? We can paint together? Maybe cook something? Just the three of us. ” An idea that they wanted to avoid but if it would make her happy, then they’d offer that because they cared about her happiness. 

       “ Anyways… That’s it. That’s my whole speech. It was a lot, I know. Sorry about that. ” Their own attention span wasn’t even that good so for her to pick up any of that… Well, that would be impressive.

" it was a wild suggestion, one that would probably be FAR from considered. however, she takes the approach of familiarity that she shares with Oda. after all, he was quite snuggly! with a bright smile, she hugs herself & keeps her eyes on Kaoru. " oda's hugs are vvv ... very, very nice ... a ... and Kao's hugs are v - v ... vvv ... very, very nice, too! oda's hugs m - make me happy, plll ... please ... sss ... so maybe, if kao gives oda a hug, th - then Kao can be haaa ... haaa ... happy, too? "

       Damn. How do you tell your sweet little sister... No? It’s not possible. That adorable face. Kaoru could be cruel but with Ari, well, they couldn’t bring themself to break her heart like that. If only they could explain their reason for distrusting Oda. But, they wouldn’t do that. The jerk other was someone that the small child seemed to adore already. For the Hitachiin to break her spirits like that and insult her friend while in her presence... Not cool. So, they’d keep their mouth closed. A sigh would escape them though but then a smile would softened their features. It really didn’t kill them inside to put on a happy face for her and pretend like they would get along with Oda. For her, they’d do anything. They would try their best. Maybe their best wasn’t the greatest response but... They truly were trying. 

       The older brother crouched down to be at her level ( like they always did ) and would carefully take her hands. Honesty, that was important. They had to set a good example and express their true feelings, not hide them. Communication helped people grow, helped them become better people, strengthened relationships. So, they cleared their throat and spoke honestly, “ Ari... Oda and I had a bad first meeting. Our relationship is good and bad. Sometimes we fight and sometimes we’re friends. It’s very messy, very silly. But, even when we fight, I promise that I will do my best to be a good friend to him. He’s very special to two of my best friends so... I want to be Oda’s friend. I want to call him a best friend someday but that takes time. I am doing my best. Maybe the hug can happen in the future, okay? ”

       They hoped that response was good enough...

       Kao-chan? What’re making? “ I’m making a storybook. ” Oh. For who? “ For Ari. I purchased a few books to read to her recently but we got through them pretty quickly. So, I figured I could make her a new storybook. One that you can’t buy or replicate. Something unique and fun. ” You’re a good big brother, Kao-chan. 

       “ You think so? ” I do. Do you think you’re a good big brother? “ I don’t know. I hope so. She deserves that. A good big brother, actually, the best big brother. I’m not there yet but maybe someday. Ari should only have the best of everything. That’s why I try to create the best things for her. ” 

       I think Ari-chan sees you as a good big brother. “ Yeah, she probably does. She’s the sweetest girl for thinking that. For seeing me that way. But, I can do better. She just... She doesn’t know how amazing she is. The way she’s changed my life. That’s pretty crazy, huh? I really thought I had everything that I would ever need. I have incredible siblings, amazing friends, all the necessities that one would need in life and yet... I guess, someone was missing from the whole picture. Ari was missing. I really feel like my world has gotten brighter because of her. I’m happier. ” You smile a lot when you’re with her. “ It’s hard not to. The kid is the best. She’s so funny, so sweet, so adorable. How can you not? Even when she’s giving me a hard time during naptime or mimicking my bad behaviors... Well, I can’t help but love her more. She’s really helping me to grow and become a better person. Ari is great. ”

       She is. So, what are you making for Ari-chan? The story? “ Oh! Right! It’s a story of our first meeting but I’m a prince, she’s a princess, and later on, we meet other characters together. Like everyone in The Host Club, my siblings, and my fiancé. Everyone is royalty since Ari sees everyone as part of royalty but she’s the top princess of the story. And, I’m also making another one which is kinda bizarre. Renge is helping me with that one. I’m trying to include Winnie the Pooh characters with Spider-Man? It’s a weird one but I think she’ll get a kick out of it. ”

       A jelly bean from a tiny jelly bean! Kaoru happily held out their hand, ready to catch the small candy. But, before popping it into their mouth, they placed a quick kiss to the top of Ari’s head, as a way to say thank you, of course. While they weren’t the biggest fan of sweets, they didn’t mind eating the jelly bean, especially when their little sister gave it to them. 

       Boy, oh boy, they regretted that. For their own safety, their brain played a trick on them by making them believe the candy was good but then the aftertaste hit them. Kaoru didn’t react fast enough. Even after they spit it out and almost coughed up a lung, their taste buds still cried out. A betrayal! An absolute betrayal! Why would Ari do this to them? Et tu, brute? Out of everyone in the world who wanted to cause them harm... Their little sister would be the one to take them out. A tragedy. 

       After crouching down, they lowered their head in defeat and sighed. It’s not that they were mad at her but they needed a minute. In that current moment, the teen had to remind themself of something incredibly important. She’s only six. You can’t prank her back. She didn’t know. It wasn’t on purpose. Even if it was on purpose. You can’t prank a kid. Be a good big brother. Be the bigger person. Actually... “ Ari... ” Lifting their head up, they looked at their sister while wearing the kindest smile ( even though their eyes shined with mischief ), “ We should share with Shuu! ”

       The mystery was put on pause when quiet cries pulled them out of the world that they had built inside their head. The book in their hand slowly fell to their lap as worry washed over them. Not caring to save their place in the story, they immediately set it aside and turned their attention to the little girl resting right beside them on their bed. “ Ari? ” They assumed that the child was awake but when they realized that she was still asleep, they placed a gentle hand on top of her head. The goal was to soothe her so she could resume her nap peacefully but before they could figure out some way to keep her asleep and comfort her... She spoke. Her mumbling and soft cries turned into words that they could easily catch. Please don’t go. I miss you. And that was enough for them to throw their original plan out the window. 

       Without another thought, the teen scooped Ari into their arms and pulled her close so they could hold her. Surely, she would wake up because of the movement and the random hug she was currently in. It wasn’t smart to disrupt her sleep. She had only slept for twenty minutes or so but it didn’t matter. Not when she was having a nightmare and one that they didn’t want to hear about. If she wanted to share, they’d listen, but they hoped that she wasn’t dreaming of them leaving her. The thought broke their heart. “ Hey Ari... I’m here. ” Amber eyes remained on her as she wiped the sleep from her eyes and looked at her big brother. She seemed more confused than anything which made them quietly laugh. “ I’m sorry for waking you up. ” Their question was right on the tip of their tongue. Kaoru was tempted to keep it to themself but knew it was important for her to share her feelings. “ Was it a bad dream, Ari? Do you want to talk about it? ” Would she remember it? If so, they’d listen. 

       Giving her a little more breathing room, they sat her down on their lap and begun the process of fixing her braids. They had a habit of doing her hair every time she arrived at the manor and since she was napping, her hair became a little untidy. It helped to keep them less anxious, too, as they waited for some response. “ Also, if you don’t remember, that’s okay. I’m still very sorry for waking you up. I’ll make it up to you. ” As one braid was undone, they bit down on their tongue momentarily and sighed, “ Y’know... I’m here for you, Ari. Always. I’m never going to leave you. Sometimes we have to say goodbye but it’s never forever. I’ll always come back to pick you up. I look forward to the days when we get to spend time together. I’m your big brother. I have to be here for you and I’m happy to be here for you. How’s that sound? ” With her hair fixed, they tilted their head to the side and smiled at their baby sister, “ Should we call Shuu so you can go down for your nap again? ”

the child held the plastic pail up high for Kaoru to see. the inside of her bucket was filled with all sorts of candies -- chocolates, gummies, lollipops, & anything else that could easily bring on a legendary tummy ache if one were to eat too much of it. but, what Ari enjoyed most about the amount was how it welcomed the opportunity to for her to share it all. even she knows that this much candy wouldn't make her feel good!

naturally -- being that Kaoru was her favorite person -- she comes to them first, allowing them to choose any favorites they might have before asking Shuu or others.

the feathery girl takes another step forward, standing on her toes once still to hold the bucket up even higher. " mmm ... my punn - kin has soooo many candies! a ... and I would like to shhh ... sha ... to share my candies with Kao, pl - please! Kao can have aaaall the ones they like! " // ( trick or treat inbox call! 🎃🍂)

       Blue ears that continued to flop right in front of their face and obstruct their view were once again pushed aside so they could look at their little sister. One would think that the designer would take into consideration that the person wearing the costume needs to see. Kaoru really did a poor job of placing the ears and making sure they wouldn’t get in the way. But, after moving them away, they crouched down and looked inside the pumpkin. “ Woah! That’s a lot. Look at all those spooky colors! I think people gave you extras because you’re so sweet and adorable, Ari. The cutest little Lilo. ” And they were the strangest looking Stitch. Way too tall to be wearing something so silly but the idea of matching with Ari made it all worth it. 

       When the little one offered some of her hard earned treats, Kaoru stopped themself from turning down her kindness. Yeah, they weren’t big on sweets and they would prefer that she keep all her candies but... Knowing her, she’d be a little sad that they didn’t accept. Maybe even try to convince them that it was okay. So, before reaching inside the pumpkin, they pressed a kiss to her forehead and then looked inside the container. There really wasn’t anything that they were interested in so instead of thinking of themself, they grabbed a few that they could give to their sister ( Ageha ) later. With a few pieces in hand, they stood back up and offered their hand to her, “ Thanks for the candy, Ari. Now... How about we hit a few more houses? ” The night was still young and Kaoru wasn’t ready to take Ari back home. They wanted a few more minutes with her. “ We should show off our costumes. We’ll make so many people jealous. ”
