An old AU/Fic idea!

So, this ask from @wild-selenite-caffine actually reminded me that I haven't posted this yet so here it is: An old post-P5S idea!

Also, MAJOR P5S SPOILERS!

The concept is this: What if the secretary that supposedly killed themselves had a relative/family member that basically held a grudge against Zenkichi for participating in the coverup (for the murder of his wife). Basically, blaming him for the hell their family went through.

So, they end up stalking him whenever he's in Tokyo; gathering info, just following him around. Nothing huge at first since they don't exactly know who he is. Then they learn after Konoe and Owada get arrested which made the news. Perhaps there was a press conference that they secretly attended and Kaburagi answers some questions before crediting Zenkichi Hasegawa for his aid in the case. Bingo! That's what they needed! Zenkichi actually notices a figure with a hoodie obscuring their face among the crowd but decides not to stress about them for now, thinking that he was just seeing things. That was when the notes and letters start. Basically threats against him and sometimes just words like, "MURDERER" on them along with, "I HOPE THE PHANTOM THIEVES STEAL YOUR HEART OR WORSE!" "I HOPE YOU DIE LIKE YOUR WIFE DID!" He was bothered, but willing to ignore them at first but the last one? Good god did that rattle him severely. He still tries to keep a level head but the notes become more frequent and even somehow ended up at his own house! In Kyoto! And Akane? She starts to become aware too, especially with how stressed her dad seems lately. That and she snooped a bit out of concern and finds the notes he kept as potential evidence (in his own secret hideout maybe?):

"Dad? Is someone bothering you at all?"

"What do you mean?"

*She shows him what she found*

"Akane... Where did-"

"I'm sorry, I know I should've done that but... I just, I felt like something was wrong and... I don't want things to go back to when mom died..."

"Akane... They're all just petty threats and I'm just saving them for evidence. Probably for a restraining order at best..."

"Then why does it not reassure me in the slightest?"

Turns out, Akane had every right to be concerned. They step up their game a bit. Now there's dangerous packages added to the mix, one of which gets Zen hurt by a bundle of razors at work. Thankfully it was not a serious injury and he dismissed it as a nasty prank from a co-worker. But now it catches Kaburagi's attention as she expresses concern too. He still tries to keep calm though but gives her permission to investigate and maybe some protection if needed. He finally loses it though when Akane nearly gets hurt by a bundle of rusty nails left on his front door and then gets a message from an unknown number saying to check the PhanSite. He does (after being filled in on its purpose by the others and Akane) and pales to see a request made towards HIM. He feels sick as he reads the message attached to it saying that he needs to pay for ruining their life and taking away a loved one.

"What...?! Who in the-?!"

He gets in touch with everyone via video chat and that's when he fully breaks down from all the stress that's been building up.

"Please... Help us! I don't want to end up nearly losing the only family I have left again!"

Futaba gets in touch with Mishima who proceeds to delete the request after she pleads that Zenkichi is genuinely a good person despite everything. This pisses the stalker off and feeling that the PTs "failed" them decides to take "justice" into their own hands. They plan accordingly, keeping an eye on his activities and routine while he, Kaburagi, and the PTs try to figure it all out with Akane growing more worried. Especially when someone has been watching her streams and leaving disturbing comments. Especially about her dad. One day, Zenkichi had to work late and gets a call from Akane, who immediately tells him to come straight home right after work. He notices how anxious she sounds and tries to reassure her again. She just responds that he comes home and that she also wants to talk to him. He's concerned now but agrees and they end the conversation there. It's late and dark out by the time he leaves and while walking to the train station, he hears a noise and starts to ready himself. He hears the noise get louder before turning around and pinning the assailant to the ground, knife sliding away. He questions them, having concluded that this was the person that threatened him and, by extension, his family only to be knocked off of them and a struggle starts as he tries to keep them away from the knife. But sadly, they fought dirty and was able to free themselves. Zenkichi chases them only to feel pain as he looks down to see a knife in his gut. They twist it, causing him to cry out in pain before pulling it out, causing him to fall to the ground. They look down at him, clearly enjoying the high they got from the action and stomps on him. He cries out again and they kneel to his level, almost giggling madly as they express their desire to continue to the torture to make him "suffer like they did." There was more beating and Zen was reminded of his interrogation back in P5S and freezes up, not fighting back. He snaps out of it when they grab him by his hair but before they could do anything worse...

"FREEZE! DROP YOUR WEAPON AND PUT YOUR HANDS UP NOW!!"

They pale and turn to see an angry Kaburagi pointing her gun at them. They panic and run off, dropping the knife in the process. Kaburagi could have chased them, but she had another priority right now. She tries to keep him alive as she calls for help and even tells him to stay awake for Akane's sake. He does survive the encounter but now there's a pissed off group of teens and daughter now...

Also, there would be Phantom Thief!Akane as the whole incident would act as a lead up/catalyst to her awakening to a Persona. Maruki would be involved too (having started dating Zen by then).

As per usual, Futaba had no intentions of speaking first. She preferred to hear what the others had to say before she said anything herself - it gave her a bit more time to think, to ponder possibilities she’d yet to consider herself. But she’d been silent for long enough, so she figures it’s about time she should give her input.

“… As Futamata-san mentioned, it’s entirely possible Rowan agreed to go with whoever was with them in the hopes of lifting their spirits. Perhaps a performance didn’t have the desired effect, and the two decided to take a ride on the Wheel of Misfortune instead. … If the other party requested it, Rowan may have joined them in order to offer further assistance.”

“Speaking of who may have been with Rowan… is it not possible she may have met with the person whose secret she had? I’m aware of some meeting to discuss theirs in private. If that is the case, it would be beneficial for everyone to share who was in possession of whose secret. I was given Idane-san’s.”

“… In the first trial, we’d discussed the possibility AEDS had a part in Reimi-san’s actions, yes? I wonder if there’s a chance the same could have occured here. A momentary lapse in normal brain functions may have caused the culprit to act out, and they came to in time to try and remedy the situation. … This is only a theory, of course. It’s still entirely possible Rowan’s death was an accident, and while I find it highly unlikely, we should also consider that it may have been purposeful and made only to look like an accident. Regardless of what proves to be true, the fact of the matter is that someone is, at least by the rules of the game, responsible for what happened.”

“With that said… I have every intention of voting for who I believe to be the ‘correct’ choice, accident or otherwise. … I’d prefer not to risk someone at random.” Sorry, Loic.

Panther { Ann Takamaki }

✧ With this being her first relationship with a girl, Ann would also like to keep it quiet for a while. Not because she is ashamed of being with her, it is merely that she is not sure who will or will not be supportive of her. Though the Phantom Thieves would congratulate her if she were to come out, the rest of Japanese society may not feel the same.

✧ There is absolutely no PDA if she is not comfortable with it. Ann knows that keeping that kind of thing a secret requires them to be at a slight distance in public but that merely means that she turns up the affection dial in private. Once the two come home, she is likely to ask for a cuddle because there has been very little touching all day.

✧ Choosing to come out to anyone is a difficult thing. If she decides to do so, Ann will be there to support her all the way because they are both in this together. Even if someone is homophobic, they can move past it because they have each other. Though she would understand if she wants it to remain a secret for a while, her acting is not the best so it may accidentally slip out.

Queen { Makoto Niijima }

✧ With Makoto, her stance about keeping it a secret is the same. Although she knows that her current group of friends & her girlfriend would never abandon her, being rejected reminds her a lot of those times in which she was alone. It made her miserable & she never wants to go back to that kind of thing again. Especially because she does not know her sister’s views on the LGBTQ+ community. There is also the fact that she needs to act professional at school because of her high reputation.

✧ Quickly, they fall into a routine of ‘study’ dates. Even if Makoto was simply going over to her house to talk & cuddle, she would still use the pretence that they were going to study together. Sometimes they would actually study because grades are important but a lot of the time it is intelligent conversation.

✧ Actually one of the most daring of the four. Makoto does not hesitate to sneak a kiss around other people, especially when she knows that no one is looking. Even if it is merely on her cheek, it is still a win nonetheless. If she reacts positively, she tries to hide a secret smile the rest of the conversation.

Oracle { Futaba Sakura }

✧ Keeping it a secret from the general public is actually rather easy because Futaba does not go outside very often. However, keeping it from Sojiro is a bigger challenge. He would figure it out eventually because of the amount of time they spend together but would never directly ask, instead opting to wait for one of them to come out to him. He is super accepting!! Anyone that makes his daughter happy also makes him happy.

✧ She likes to secretly hold hands, even if it is a little risky. For some reason, it soothes the mind. Even if it is merely the intertwinement of the pinkies, she smiles whenever it happens. Although she is not an advocate of PDA, small things make her feel better amongst big groups of people.

✧ This is her first relationship, so please take care of her!! Futaba has a huge weakness for cuddling in her room when she knows that everyone is out of the house or they are fast asleep. She may even fall asleep herself but beware, as she shifts & mumbles a lot in her sleep.

Violet { Sumire Yoshizawa }

✧ Sumire is very fluttery about being in a relationship. She can get flustered quite quickly & that can cause a scene in public, make sure not to tease her! Keeping it a secret is perfectly fine for her even though she knows that her father would understand. Despite this, keeping the relationship a secret is quite difficult. A lot of her schedule is quite busy, so most of seeing her would come from hanging out together at Shujin Academy during lunch time or even through texting each other.

✧ However, there is a caveat. Lack of affection & validation can make Sumire feel insecure about herself, which leads to her wondering if she is a good partner for her girlfriend. Although she would disclose this secret only to herself, it would eventually be another thing that tears her down & prevents her from focusing on gymnastics.

✧ If she ever wanted to come out to anyone, she would like to talk to them & see what they think of the gay community in case there is a chance that they are homophobic because she would not want her significant other to experience any kind of hate, abandonment or violence. Deeming herself a good judge of character, Sumire does some investigation to see what their opinions are without having to directly ask any questions.

Note(s): I swear the amount of stupidity that would hit some of them if this were to happen, it'd be hilarious. Gonna do this in 2 parts so I can include everyone!!

Akira

This freaking guy will just have the biggest grin on his face when he hears you swooning over Joker.

Will 100% use it as a way to get closer to you. Just sliding in the seat next to you saying, “Hey I heard you talking about the Phantom Thieves. Joker is super cool right?”

Honestly just mentions it to hear all the compliments and stuff fall from your mouth. It’s a huge ego boost.

Does feel a bit hurt because he wants to tell you the truth, but his dumb not-a- cat tells him that he can’t risk it.

So for now he’ll just listen to you swoon over him and one day he’ll hit you with the truth to get an adorable blush out of you.

Ann

Hearing you talking about your support to the Phantom Thieves causes her to swell with pride at that. She’s glad that her crush sides with them.

When you begin talking about your crush on Panther, however, she has mixed feelings.

While yes, she does feel embarrassed about all the praise. It’s not all good embarrassment because her outfit is so skintight and she’s already had weird anon comments online when she’s done photoshoots so hearing her crush simping gives her that awkward laughter.

Like thank you for finding her attractive, but also maybe tone it down a bit with the comments. Cause Panther is an actual person under the mask and not a fetish.

Definitely tries to change the subject if you begin really saying some “interesting” things about Panther.

Futaba

Immediately begins snickering when she hears the things you say about Oracle.

She doesn’t tell you why she finds it amusing, probably says something like it being funny that you have a celebrity crush.

Futaba on the inside, is dying though. Like her crush really likes her? Sure, you like her Thief version, but holy crap she is not ready for this.

Definitely will get flustered and nervous laughter around you depending on what you say about Oracle because as amusing as it is, her heartbeat will not calm down.

If she gets too flustered at what you’re saying then she might shoot you double finger guns and back away from the conversation.

Haru

I mean, she finds the compliments of you thinking her to be beautiful flattering.

But then the compliments get to another stage of, “I want Noir to step on me.” and she doesn’t know how to react.

Because at first she would think that being stepped on isn’t as good of an idea as it sounds because shoes are dirty and you deserve better than that.

But then she thinks of all the enemies she has pummeled to death with her hammer and maybe being stomped on isn’t as bad compared to that. But she still would never do that to her crush!

Might try talking to you about how the Phantom Thieves are doing because it’d be good to hear how the public is feeling, although she struggles to keep a gentle smile when she hears you going off about Noir. Maybe she will step on you at this point.

Thoughts on Akechi’s Game

On the leaked news of Akecho’s game, I want to post some personal notions I have about it.

First of all Akecho's game should center around making confidants with the Phantom Thieves' confidants. Like, through P5 we see a pattern repeat with the PT confidants: the Confidant in question, an Abuser that slighted them, a Friend that might or might not be a victim of said abuse, and a later introduction to a Counterpart/Rival that matches them.

Ryuji was assaulted and defamed by Kamoshida and Yamaguchi, who also tormented his track team friends, Nakaoka, Takeishi, and Ikeda. In Persona 5 Sramble/Strikers we are introduced to Konoe, who I think serves as a counterpart to Ryuji’s background.

Ann was harassed by Kamoshida, and Shiho was caught in the crossfire. We meet Mika and Alice that are both envious of Ann’s accomplishments and share a sort of rivalry-hopeful friendship.

Yusuke was exploited by Madarame along with the other pupils. Think in Nakanohara. Natsume works as his foil.

Makoto is being used by Kobayakawa and is later extorted by Kaneshiro. She establishes a friendship with Eiko, and in Strikers, she projects her younger self in Akane.

Futaba had her life ruined by Shido and Youji Isshiki. Beside Sojiro, She has a friend called Kana and her growth is the inverse of Ubukata’s.

Haru was a pawn of Okumura and Sugimura, Takakura was her father’s business partner who decides to support her, sort of like an uncle. Mariko herself was some sort of guardian figure to Haru before her jail, and stands as a testaments to Haru’s development.

This far the whole pattern holds up, but it can mutate into a shorter version: Confidant / Abuser / Friend.

Sumire was brainwashed by Maruki, and Kasumi functions as both her Friend and her Rival.

Sophia herself was neglected by Ichinose, and later faced EMMA/Demiurge as both a reflection of herself and her counterpart.

Iwai faces against Tsuda, in protection of Kaoru.

Tae butts heads with Shoichi Oyamada for Miwa’s sake.

Kawakami complies with that coercive couples’ requests because she felt responsible for Taiki Takase’s death.

Ohya was being hindered by Shido/her boss from reaching Kayo Murakami.

At last we have the Confidant / Abuser pattern seen with Shinya, Hifumi, Mishima, Chihaya, Toranosuke and Sae herself. These mostly involve helping out the confidant in question.

I’m also a fan of marigolds by colbub original confidants so like if they could slip them in there it would be great! Ise Saito is best grandma (gives me Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple vibes) and Hinata Osumi is ESSENTIAL, I loved the whole parallels to Akechi’s own mother. Fusazane Atsuzawa and Fusatsune Tsuchihashi are wonderful, though at this point I think Atsuzawa was just Zenkichi’s prelude. Must have extra-confidants from the original game would be Wakaba, Sae, Shido, Jose and Muhen.

Anyway, Akechi himself is represented in this pattern because of his connection with Ren. Their shared abuser was Shido, and each of them was the other’s rival and friend. So it would be funny from the PT’s p.o.v that Akechi, “the leader’s fucked up friend/rival”, turned out to be close acquaintances with each of the members fucked up friends / rivals.

What do you think if the Phantom Thieves (except Futaba) all had Shadows they had to confront and fight (like in p4), and what would they be?

OK this one is super interesting and it’s taken me MONTHS to get to, so let’s gooooooooo (will include p5r spoilers!)

i think all of their contracts sort of give us an idea of what their shadow selves may be (meaning goro is more up in the air), and i like to go with the idea that in p5, their shadows are how society has forced them to act. they have incorporated that into the self and conformed to it, but they don’t wish to acknowledge that they do so, instead making themselves believe they have no choice. futaba’s shadow, as the example, wishes for her own death as she was a burden and a curse to her mother...but she also made futaba aware this was a lie concocted by adults that took away her agency and her anger. SO with that in mind, here are the takes!!

akira - the bystander, the boy told to keep out of the way and to keep his head down. he’s determined to live a quiet and peaceful life, to get through his probation and swear to turn the other way when evil happens in front of him. akira is ashamed of the impulse because he knows what’s right, he knows he needs to help, but his shadow is all about self-preservation and avoiding further punishment. so he protects himself and only himself by feigning ignorance and closing his eyes, his ears, and his mouth. his shadow says “i already got mine, they’re on their own”

ryuji - the traitor, the boy who ruined the dreams of the track team and wears it with pride. he destroyed their hopes of the future and now has become a delinquent, free of the responsibilities he once had to himself, to his mom, and to his school. he can be rude, crass, and vulgar (lol) to his heart’s content because no one expects any more of him after enacting such violence. his anger runs deep and he doesn’t care about how he hurt his old team, they deserved it for never standing up for themselves.

ann - the sweetheart, the girl always there with a kind but seemingly empty word for her friend, supportive but distant. however, she instead tries to work within the confines of the world, trying to save the ones she cares about by using her looks and the reputation everyone puts on her because of them, pretending to be a flirtatious airhead to please those that may hurt the only person she cares for. she hurts herself over and over again, breaks down her own sense of self worth to sacrifice endlessly in ways others never see. she takes the pain forever with a smile.

yusuke - the student, the boy who knows the lies his teacher tells to him, but he is forever devoted to preserving the image his superior has both to the world and to himself. he believes his debt extends to worship, faith in the teacher who is a genius, who knows best, who is so much older and so much wiser and so must be doing right. in fact, he should be so lucky to have his work considered good enough to carry his teacher’s name instead of his own, he should happily produce for him because his teacher’s reputation has no price too high. surely he at least must return the cost of caring for him when no one would.

makoto - the role model, the girl who is quick-witted and resourceful, she can juggle every task the incompetent, lazy, or uncaring adults entrust to her. after all, their responsibilities are so much greater than even hers, just a silly high school student with all the time in the world to perform their lowlier tasks for them. she accepts every ask with grace and tact, she turns down no request and will work herself past the point of burn out for praise, for recognition, for the promise of her future. this is just the way the world is, she must get used to it now if she wants to survive.

haru - the princess, the girl who’s always charming and polite, perfectly prim and never a bore but her words are always shallow. she seems to only exist at gatherings and galas, always smiling, introduced by a beaming father and complimented on how beautiful she is, how she will make a most wonderful wife now that she’s blossoming into a young woman. she worships her fiance, she has captivated his whole family and, most importantly, his father with how delicate and vapid she is. a wonderful spouse up for trade, the loveliest business venture her father ever pursued.

goro - the orphan, the boy who is helpless and was left abandoned by his family and by society. he has no will of his own that he can inflict on the world, instead he is battered by fate and by an actively cruel reality, a curse, unwanted and unneeded by anyone. he elicits disgust in whoever he meets, yet he yearns deeply to be loved and to be accepted, he begs for it and everyone he meets that will give him any time of day are his “friends”. he believes there is no such thing as unconditional love and no matter what he tries, his struggle will be rendered futile.

sumire - the doppelganger, the girl that believes she is only a shadow of a sister far more talented and determined than she could ever be. she only had worth defined by another, one she followed around like a weight, dragging her down with her incompetence. a burden for her sister, pitied awkwardly by parents, an inconvenience that grew increasingly irrelevant and irritating with every passing day until she botched her own death. now she is a shadow without a body, the wrong girl taken in her attempt on her own life, the ultimate blunder ever committed by another human being. she pantomimes her sister more and more poorly, although she’s tricked herself into believing she really is her in her house of ashes.

morgana - the monster, the boy that can’t face who he really is for he fears what he will see in the mirror. he lives happily in ignorance, never wanting to remember his origins or his duties and he indulges in his freedom without worry of where he comes from. after all, if he has no idea of his past, he can imagine himself as anything he wants - a dashing rogue, a swashbuckling hero, a gallant thief, he is whatever he makes himself to be without the burden of his history. he never turns around too quickly, never wanting to catch a look at himself because every now and then he sees jail cells, black ooze, darkness. but that’s not him.

Akechi x (Phantom Thief) Reader (Persona 5/Royal)

Ooh first request! Yeah! by: anon

Gender Neutral reader

"Rennnnn!" you yelled in an attempt to get the dark haired leader's attention from behind and you as you run up from behind him during the cold Shibuya morning. The boy turned around, reaching the platform as he gave you a questioning look.

He mumbled something along the lines of "Good morning, what's up?" or something like that I suppose. "Is it about the palace?" He asks.

You nod. "Are we sending the calling card today?" Morgana chirps up.

"We're waiting until the last day. Akechi, Ren and I have a meeting with Maruki and we'll give him the calling card." He explains, to which Ren nods. You give a quick head bop to show you were paying attention. It doesn't take long for the train to arrive.

Your relationship with Akechi? Well you were fun acquaintances at first, occasionally met up while playing darts with the others and you'd be on a team together on occasion, then he blackmailed your friends and yourself which really put a damper on your relationship, until you thought he died, and then he suddenly wasn't dead? Quite a storyline if you say so yourself. At the very least he's redeemed himself. At this particular point in time you'd consider your relationship with him nothing more than you having a teensy crush on him- which got you teased mercilessly by Ann and Ryuji any chance they got.

Of course the boring school day goes by slower each day it feels like, especially when you're waiting for something big to happen. It doesn't take too much longer for the school day to end as you and the other thieves met up, as usual.

Of course mementos was still a thing so you still had plenty to do between palace visits. Sitting in the cramped back of the Mona car wasn't as bad when you usually got to sit next to your crush for hours on end.

Of course liking Akechi was bound to be troublesome at some point. You know the orginal reality would eventually be restored back at some point to which you didn't particularly want to think about what would happen. Just live in the current moment.

That moment you were daydreaming about your crush while being uncomfortably crushed together, pun intended.

"Has it always been this horribly cramped?" Said crush complained. Well of course you attempted to scoot over, that happened to be an unsuccessful attempt.

"Sorry I can't scoot over more-" You started as he shook his head. He kinda sighed and mumbled how it wasn't you specifically he was complaining about, as he non chalantly scooted closer to you, away from the other two sitting in the back with you as he put his arm around your shoulders, taking full advantage of the cramped seating.

"Target: Located!" you hear Futaba exclaim as she started giving Joker directions.

Fighting side by side with Akechi isn't something you think you'd ever do again, but this was somehow different, you're fighting with him towards his possible death to restore the rest of the world? You don't think about it too much. Not a fun thought. Something about the whole situation was more bizarre than you would have imagined fighting Yaldaboth would be, but that somehow didn't make you fight worse, maybe even better, to protect what time you had left with him? This whole situation odd. Get over yourself.

Every fight ends somehow though. This fight ending as usual, getting back in the car and heading home for the day. The days seemed to go by faster and faster when you know whats in store for your future.

"Y/N!" You turn around to see Akechi behind you, the day before you send the calling card. "Perhaps the busy underground walkway of Shibuya isn't the best way to say this." He mumbles "But Maybe meet me for darts? Just the two of us, this one last time?" He proposes.

You smile at this proposal. "Of course! I'll meet you in Kichijoji after school then."

He gives a genuine smile (for fucking once) as he kisses the corner of your mouth. "See you then." He says, walking past you.

akira has an adrenaline problem and is more reckless in sae’s casino that akechi expected. also akechi cares more about it than akechi expected.

The Thieves get overprotective of Joker in Sae’s casino, which is too bad, because it’s very big with many moving parts and it’s best for them to divide and conquer the place, which is how he explains it to them during a Thieves meeting that Akechi is not invited to. Also, when Joker splits them up into groups, Joker is sometimes paired up with only Crow.

The rest of the Thieves give each other unimpressed looks. “That’s… the opposite of reassuring,” Makoto says with a pained sigh.

“If anything happens, I’ll be fine. Plus, Futaba knows where I am at all times, and she can always reach me through the comms. I’ll say something if anything happens.”

Everyone gives each other such a significant look that Akira wonders if maybe the Thieves are having secret meetings that he isn’t invited to, either. But they don’t push him on it.

He asks Ryuji about it when everyone else has gone, Haru’s taken Morgana for the night, and it’s just the two of them in Akira’s attic. “We’re just… worried for you,” says Ryuji, scratching the back of his head. “The entire reason Akechi’s even here is to kill you, right? Guy’s a liar and probably a murderer and we don’t even know how dangerous he is. His Persona’s already crazy strong and Makoto thinks he’s got more tricks up his sleeve, too.”

Akira thought that through already. The probability is that Akechi can’t kill him until they’ve gotten to the end of the palace, and stolen Sae’s “heart” on the exact day that Akechi requested. On the other hand, it’s still just a probability. Maybe Akechi can kill him whenever he wants. “It’ll be fine,” says Akira.

“I mean, I know that,” says Ryuji, and sighs. “I guess… it’d be one thing if we just thought he might kill you the second we’re not lookin’, but I–I dunno. We were all worried ‘cause we thought that you kept pairing yourself up with Crow on purpose ‘cause you liked that he might…”

Ryuji trails away. “Uh, actually, never mind. Sounds dumb now that I say it aloud, honestly. Forget about it. See you tomorrow.”

“See you,” says Akira.

Akira Kurusu is a good boy, who lived in a good town, with a good family, with only good neighborhoods. There were never any bad neighborhoods to duck into and pick any fights with the wrong kind of people. There were never any bad bars to lose yourself in and make out with the wrong person. There were no criminals or thieves or so-called bad influences for a boy to get involved in.

Akira Kurusu is still a good boy. He lives in Tokyo now. He never finds himself so furious he can’t think, and he never heads to Mementos to punch shadows full of bullet holes, or (hopefully) get the shit kicked out of him. Akira Kurusu never scales the highest, tallest buildings in the Metaverse’s palaces, just to feel the ice-cold fear in his stomach hit him like a shot of vodka. Akira Kurusu never cuts it too close to the Palace deadline, just to feel the danger prickle on the back of his neck, or see the nervousness in his teammates’ eyes. He never makes an alliance with someone who doesn’t love him, just to wring some mutual benefit for the both of them like pulling blood from a stone.

Akira Kurusu never lurks on the school roof, or picks up shifts at Crossroads, or skulks in alleyways long after his bedtime, hoping for some douchebag to take a dislike to his face and give him a good reason to get some blood under his nails and feel alive for an hour. Whoever walks the Tokyo streets is some nameless, faceless specter, of no future and no past, to disappear when the sun rises.

Akira Kurusu is a good boy who gets good grades and runs Sojiro’s coffee shop when Sojiro is out. His face is blank and impassive, and there’s definitely no grudges locked behind his teeth. He goes to school on time and answers all the questions right and speaks to no one. He doesn’t think about girls. He also doesn’t think about boys.

Akira Kurusu is a good boy, who, one day at a TV station, met another good boy named Goro Akechi, who smiled politely and said all the right things, who never had a bad thought in his head or a fury in his throat. When Goro Akechi comes to set up camp in Leblanc, it is of course no problem, because Goro Akechi is a good boy who would never wait for hours just to see the whites of his prey’s eyes, and Akira Kurusu is a good boy who’s never done anything wrong, and never hungers for the sharp jolt of being pursued pressed like a blade against his neck.

Because they are both two very good boys, it is never a threat when Goro Akechi smiles at him in the subway station, and Akira’s smile back to the quick heartbeat of adrenaline is never real.

Anyway, the next day a Ganesha throws Joker through a slot machine.

“Joker!” Crow is probably saying, although Joker can’t hear a whole lot while upside down and covered in casino chips and bits of machine parts. Joker appreciates the concern, though, considering that Joker’s just split up the group again, and it’s only Joker and Crow against this brick shithouse of an elephant god. When Joker springs back up, his coattails and bits of bloody chips go flying; his whole body is singing. Crow says, “Hamao–”

That’s Joker’s least favorite move. No fun when Crow’s Hamaons or Mudoons land right, and the shadow drops clean like a cut puppet, no blood, no mess, no struggle. “Hecantoncheires!” Joker interrupts, and feels another chunk of his life force get gouged out as payment for a Swift Strike.

“Ganesha resists physical!” Crow snaps.

Joker pulls out his gun and unloads the whole clip and only stops when Crow kicks him out of the way of Ganesha’s angry swipe. “It’s weak to Psychokinesis, Joker! Finish this quickly!”

Trust Crow to have memorized all the shadows’ weaknesses. He sounds just like Queen does when Joker’s not taking it seriously enough for her. Joker pulls Kunishinada from his soul and casts a weak Psi, sweeping the shadow right off its massive feet to hit the ground with a floor-shaking crash. Joker pulls out his dagger. If Ganesha was going to beg or bargain, Joker’s not interested. He wants a good old-fashioned fight.

When Joker’s dagger slices through Ganesha’s fat stomach, Ganesha’s death throes slam a fist right into Joker’s back, crushing him and tearing Joker’s dagger straight through Ganesha’s body. Ganesha explodes into shadow dust and a shower of yen.

When Joker stands back up, he can feel himself beaming like a maniac, and Crow seems to almost smile back just out of pure shock. And with the Ganesha gone, it’s just Joker and the last and only enemy that mattered in the middle of the casino floor, surrounded by the Sae’s machines chattering out numbers of the highest, highest stakes. Joker’s enemy is sizing Joker up in the wake of battle, examining the blood streaking down his face; Joker’s enemy is sweeping his body from head to toe with his dark red eyes, lingering at the cinch of Joker’s vest waist, the high collars. Joker’s enemy’s eyes are wide.

“Gorgeous,” says Joker, and then collapses.

Crow’s over him in a second, but before he can say anything, Oracle’s voice comes over the line: “Joker? Your reading’s are a little wonky, are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” says Joker. He sounds remarkably fine, actually, considering that his vision’s going a little grey.

“You’re not–”

Joker presses a finger to his own lips. Crow shuts up, his eyes glittering and rapt. “I’m fine,” says Joker again to Oracle. “It was just a skirmish with a shadow. Nothing big.”

“Uhhhhhh… Okay? You know where the safe room is if you need it? Noir’s not too far away if you need a hand, too.”

“Thanks, Oracle.”

“Aye aye, Captain,” says Oracle, which makes Crow’s lips purse for some reason. The line clicks off.

“Don’t tell me you’re fine,” says Crow immediately. His voice is shaking.

“I am fine.”

“I can see the blood–!”

“That’s a flesh wound.”

“This is no time for jokes,” says Crow sharply.

“Worried?” asks Joker. His to-be murderer, fretting about death coming a little too soon for his tastes? Ah, his to-be murderer is tracing his gloved fingers by Joker’s exposed and open neck.

Crow ignores him. “Robin Hood doesn’t know any healing spells. Can you heal yourself?”

“I’m out of magic.”

Crow looks like he’s trying very hard to be a good, straight-laced detective who doesn’t say “fuck” and also doesn’t panic. Crow is taking deep breaths, like he’s the one who go punched in the chest twice by a two-thousand pound elephant. “That was incredibly foolhardy of you.”

“It was just a bit of fun.”

“Pardon me for saying so, but what part about getting the shit kicked out of you was fun?”

Joker has the stupidest, goofiest smile on his face, he knows, because he’s half-drunk on all his wounds and, in his defense, there is a very pretty murderer with a sharp, sharp sword and gun that never misses staring down at him, their masks close enough to touch, Crow’s hands close enough to strangle him to death right there on the casino floor. Joker wants to see what would happen if Crow tried. “It’s not fun if it can’t at least kill you,” he says, more sincerely than he meant to.

Crow’s throat works and swallows hard. His hands are tight around Joker’s chest. “I–think I have some medicine in my pocket,” he says suddenly, and tears his eyes away. It turns out that he actually does, surprisingly, in the form of one of Takemi’s pill packets and a crushed protein bar. Crow watches Joker carefully to make sure that Joker actually takes them both. He keeps watching everything Joker does, really, from the way Joker pulls the packet apart, to the tiny bites he takes, to his careful swallows. When Joker spits a wad of blood out to clear his throat, Crow stares at it like he’s never seen the color red before.

“Let’s go back to the others,” Crow says, when Joker’s finished regaining whatever strength he can. “We can hardly have the illustruous leader of the Phantom Thieves dying here.” And all the way back, Crow refuses to leave Joker’s side.

For Joker’s to-be murderer, Crow seems to care an awful lot about whether or not Joker lives or dies, Joker thinks.

So sorry for all the spamming today! I just feel like leaving notes here is a lot better than on Twitter! But here's another old concept that was collecting dust:

Also MAJOR P5S SPOILERS!

-Concept: What if the secretary that supposedly killed themselves had a relative/family member that basically held a grudge against Zenkichi for participating in the coverup (for the murder of his wife)? Basically blaming him for the hell their family went through.

-So they end up stalking him whenever he's in Tokyo, gathering info, just following him around. Nothing huge at first since they don't exactly know who he is. Then they learn after Konoe and Owada get arrested which made the news. -Perhaps there was a press conference that they secretly attended and Kaburagi answers some questions before crediting Zenkichi Hasegawa for his aid in the case. Bingo! That's what they needed! Zenkichi actually notices a figure with a hoodie obscuring their face among the crowd but decides not to stress about them for now, thinking that he was just seeing things. -That was when the notes and letters start. Basically threats against him and sometimes just words like, "MURDERER" on them along with, "I HOPE THE PHANTOM THIEVES STEAL YOUR HEART OR WORSE!" "I HOPE YOU DIE LIKE YOUR WIFE DID!" He was bothered, but willing to ignore them at first but the last one? Good god did that rattle him severely. He still tries to keep a level head, but the notes become more frequent and even somehow ended up at his own house! In Kyoto! -And Akane? She starts to become aware too, especially with how stressed her dad seems lately. That and she snooped a bit out of concern and finds the notes he kept as potential evidence (in his own secret hideout maybe?):

"Dad? Is someone bothering you at all?"

"What do you mean?"

*Shows him what she found*

"Akane... Where did-"

"I'm sorry, I know I should've done that but... I just, I felt like something was wrong and... I don't want things to go back to when mom died..."

"Akane... They're all just petty threats and I'm just saving them for evidence. Probably for a restraining order at best..."

"Then why does it not reassure me in the slightest?" -Turns out, Akane had every right to be concerned. They step up their game a bit. Now there's dangerous packages added to the mix, one of which gets Zen hurt by a bundle of razors at work. Thankfully it was not a serious injury and he dismissed it as a nasty prank from a co-worker. But now it catches Kaburagi's attention as she expresses concern too. He still tries to keep calm though but gives her permission to investigate and maybe some protection if needed. -He finally loses it though when Akane nearly gets hurt by a bundle of rusty nails left on his front door and then gets a message from an unknown number saying to check the PhanSite. He does (after being filled in on its purpose by the others and Akane) and pales to see a request made towards HIM. He feels sick as he reads the message attached to it saying that he needs to pay for ruining their life and taking away a loved one:

"What...?! Who in the-?!"

-He gets in touch with everyone via video chat and that's when he fully breaks down from all the stress that's been building up:

"Please... Help us! I don't want to end up nearly losing the only family I have left again!" -Futaba gets in touch with Mishima who proceeds to delete the request after she pleads that Zenkichi is genuinely a good person despite everything. This pisses the stalker off and feeling that the PTs "failed" them decides to take "justice" into their own hands. -They plan accordingly, keeping an eye on his activities and routine while he, Kaburagi, and the PTs try to figure it all out with Akane growing more worried. Especially when someone has been watching her streams and leaving disturbing comments. Especially about her dad. -One day, Zenkichi had to work late and gets a call from Akane, who immediately tells him to come straight home right after work. He notices how anxious she sounds and tries to reassure her again. She just responds that he come home and that she also wants to talk to him. -He's concerned now but agrees and they end the conversation there. It's late and dark out by the time he leaves and while walking to the train station, he hears a noise and starts to ready himself. He hears the noise get louder before turning around and pinning the assailant to the ground, knife sliding away. He questions them, having concluded that this was the person that threatened him and, by extension, his family only to be knocked off of them and a struggle starts as he tries to keep them away from the knife. -But sadly, they fought dirty and was able to free themselves. Zenkichi chases them only to feel pain as he looks down to see a knife in his gut. They twist it, causing him to cry out in pain before pulling it out, causing him to fall to the ground. They look down at him, clearly enjoying the high they got from the action and stomps on him. He cries out again and they kneel to his level, almost giggling madly as they express their desire to continue to the torture to make him "suffer like they did." -There was more beating and Zen was reminded of his interrogation back in P5S and freezes up, not fighting back. He snaps out of it when they grab him by his hair but before they could do anything worse... "FREEZE! DROP YOUR WEAPON AND PUT YOUR HANDS UP NOW!!"

-They pale and turn to see an angry Kaburagi pointing her gun at them. They panic and run off, dropping the knife in the process. Kaburagi could have chased them, but she had another priority right now.

-She tries to keep him alive as she calls for help and even tells him to stay awake for Akane's sake. He does survive the encounter but now there's a pissed off group of teens and daughter now...

-Also, PT!Akane since this could easily be her breaking point.

Thanks! It’s been pretty decent! And oh boy. Kitsune gonna get jelly. (This also ended up being a mixture of headcanon and fic)

If you have a y chromosome and you look just a little too long at Futaba, you’ll only get a glare.

If you have a y chromosome and you ask Futaba to dance while at Toichiro’s galas, then you just signed your death warrant.

Not literally. But Toichiro’s working on that whole “killing people with a look thing”

“Oh excuse me, I understand arriving late is always a possibility, however I did introduce her as my fiance.” Toichiro said, giving his smile that even humans would describe as a kitsune grin. His eyes were not nearly as mirthful however. The man who made the mistake bowed deeply.

“My apologies.” He said and scampered off. Futaba looked at Toichiro.

“How many times have you done this?” She asked him, her tone more exasperated.

Toichiro took a hold of her, and began leading Futaba on to the dance floor. “Clearly not enough.”

Futaba eventually spells out to Toichiro that he doesn’t need to protect her from every male in existence.

He still gives plenty of snarky comments. And if they were dumb enough to trip over an illusion, that’s their own fault.

Futaba does enjoy some of the possessiveness. She just gets concerned Toichiro will take things a bit too far.

Before going to kitsune village, Toichiro scent marks Futaba. (Lots of nuzzling. A LOT of nuzzling.) No one is dumb enough to chase after Futaba, but he’s still gonna make sure everyone knows.

This is the one aspect of jealous!Toichiro that Futaba 100% enjoys.

Futaba ends up taking Shizuki aside and asking if all kitsune are like this or if it’s just Toichiro. Shizuki sighs. Stares off into the distance. Sighs again. Then lets her know it is literally just Toichiro being possessive.

The Phantom Thieves were hanging out in LeBlanc, for once not having any hearts to steal or requests to fill. Everything was at peace, for the first time in a while.

"Wow, can't believe that the school year's almost over.", Makoto pondered over her cup. "Graduation's right around the corner, and I haven't the faintest idea of where I want to be next." "Here here.", Haru responded with a nod.

"Time moves by so quickly.", Yusuke agreed with a sigh. "Right? Before we know it, this guy'll be...off...", Ryuji tried to continue with a pat on Akira's shoulder before his face fell. "...Sorry.", Ryuji admitted before Ann half-heartedly shrugged the mood change off. "Eh, don't worry about it. I'm sure this guy's just jumping to go back home to all of his much cooler friends.", she remarked with a grin. Kurusu was quick to wave the assumption off. "Pfft, what friends?", he retorted with a light tone.

"Yeah, Ann. What friends? He's always been the silent lone wolf that all the girls in town just throw themselves at.", Ryuji remarked, wrapping an arm over his shoulder. "Ha! I lost my romantic appeal after 3rd year of primary." The room grew silent. "What happened in—" "I don't wanna talk about it."

"Well, what about family? Surely your parents are waiting for you to come back." Kurusu just shrugged. "I doubt it since I haven't heard anything from them." "Nothing?", Ann asked, only to be met with a shake of the head. "Not a word."

The room grew quiet with an awkward tension as Sojiro reentered the room, immediately getting a read. "Well, any time you need to stay in Tokyo, give us a call! We'll be happy to have you.", Futaba spoke up, lightening the mood. "Right, Sojiro?"

The man nodded with a smile. "And you know that Ryuji'll be waiting by the door every day like a little puppy.", Morgana teased. "Will—I really can't argue with that.", Sakamoto admitted with a hung head. "Can we keep him?", Akira asked in a high-pitched voice, squeezing Ryuji's cheeks as if he were a small animal. The gag made the friend group laugh.

The man chuckled as well, reclaiming his spot behind the counter.

“It’s a shame you can’t stay.”, Futaba whined, draping over the countertop. “We could’ve kept you ‘till graduation! And then during college!” Sojiro chuckled. “Well, it’s not like we’d have to stop seeing each other. I’ve already got his graduation date marked.” The offhand remark caught Kurusu’s attention. “R-Really?”, he stammered. “Yep. You can count on us being there.” the man said with a curt nod. Akira echoed the gesture, clearly appreciative of the effort. “Y’know. I just realized something. Everyone here’s told him his goals and dreams and hopes for the future. But we haven’t heard his.”, Haru observed, gesturing to Akira. “Y’know what? You’re right.”, Ryuji agreed, wrapping an arm around Joker to make sure he didn’t escape. “So, how about it?”, Morgana prompted, making everyone look at the frizzy-haired boy expectedly.

Kurusu almost blushed from all the attention, not used to having the spotlight shine so brightly on him. “Uhh...well...hmm...how do I put this...I don’t know? Like, I thought I just wanted to go with the flow; go to a good college, get a stable job, find a wife or a husband, maybe have a couple of kids. But then this happened to me...and I kind of got thrown in a loop. I’m... not so sure anymore.” Everyone stopped short for a second. “Why’s that?” Ann asked, head tilted in curiosity.

Akira took a moment to collect his thoughts before trying to put them into words, resulting in the most he’s spoken since he came here. “Well, it almost seems hypocritical, you know? The leader of the Phantom Thieves, a notorious group sworn to right the wrongs of a society that discourages individuality and wants everyone to do as told, goes on to live a systematic lifestyle encouraged by statistics. I don’t...want to be a statistic, but then that leads to the question…” “What do you want to be?”, Makoto finished, sympathetic. “And I don’t have an answer for that. Plus, I have a criminal record now, so any chance of getting into a good college has dropped like a bomb.” He remarked, mimicking the sound and movement of a bomb dropping. “Nah, you don’t need a degree to be set, my guy. Mishima and I are talking about doing an online startup once we’re out; you’re more than welcome to tag along.”, Ryuji offered. “Just might.”

“It’s not exactly stable, but if it comes to it, I’d be more than happy to have you keep helping me around here. I could continue teaching you; things like how to run a place like this. Chances...chances are, when I go, you’ll be the one getting this place.” Akira jolted up in surprise, before looking at the cafe. This place...his? “W-What?”, Futaba asked in shock, whirling around so quickly that Yusuke felt his own neck starting to hurt. Tears started to line across her eyes. “Relax, that’s not going to be for a long, long, long time if I can help it. I’ll still be here running this place when you go become an IT millionaire and go live in a four-story house up in Akihabara with fifteen dogs, twenty cats and at least ten birds--all named after anime characters--and the only time anyone could see you outside the house is when you’re walking your pets.” “And visiting you.”, Futaba interrupted, feeling much better after Sojiro’s jokes.

“You mean it?”, Akira asked solemnly, gaze fixed on the table in front of him. “Absolutely. I’m as serious as death here.”, Sojiro responded, looking down at Akira so that he could see the teen’s eyes hidden behind his glasses.

"Yeah. Thanks, Dad."

Everyone froze in their spot, glancing between the man in shock and the boy who realized his mistake. Without much of a second thought, he slowly got up, moved out of the chair, and dashed upstairs to the room where he locked the key.

"Hey!! Don't run from your feelings!!", Morgana shouted as Akira slammed the door. "Tsk. Kids these days. Never respecting their father." "SHUT UP!"

Persona 5 Palaces RANKED

After recently finishing up Persona 5, I'm sort of aching a bit for more content but not quite enough to splash on Dancing in Starlight. So, to sate my cravings for more of the phantom bois, here's my personal ranking of the main palaces you traverse through in the game. This list is based on how fun and consistently interesting each palace is in terms of gameplay, puzzles, soundtrack, character, aesthetic and overall relevance to the story. Hope u enjoy/agree! Kinda goes without saying, but MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD for the whole ass game

8. Okumura’s Spaceport of Greed

Who saw this coming? Probably everyone! Because Okumura's palace is pretty much consistently ranked at the bottom of every ranking I've seen. But before I go all negative, let's start with what I actually liked. First off, I ADORED the spaceport motif and the whole theme/aesthetic of this palace was amazing. Alongside that, the music, while probably not the strongest in the game, was still mega catchy and fit the palace perfectly (it's still a banger, even if it isn't Whims of Fate level banger). So yeah, this palace's rock bottom ranking is nothing to do with its look or its soundtrack, because they're both pretty tasty. It was everything else I had a slight problem with. Now this isn't to say I disliked this palace, I just felt that it was the weakest part of an absolutely stellar game. While the majority of the puzzles weren't terrible, the infamous airlock puzzle definitely got in my bad books, as I'm pretty firmly in the 'this puzzle is weird luck-based bollocks' camp on this one, with it being the only puzzle in the game I had to look up the solution for. The constant back-and-forthing to different points of the palace to pick up keycards from the stupid robots became unfortunately very repetitive, especially with Morgana constantly screaming at me that the treasure was real close but (spoiler alert) it totally wasn't. And to top all that off, I felt this palace brought with it the weakest characters arcs in the whole game. I really struggled to become attached to Haru, the last true member of the thieves. While she was an okay character and I sympathised with her plight of being sold off to that one arsehole, I felt she wasn't written to be particularly interesting and her introduction to the thieves felt really shoehorned in compared to the natural-feeling transitions of all the other characters. She didn't quite feel as if she belonged there as much as the others (big sorry to all the Haru stans). And echoing this, the character of Okumura himself also felt incredibly bland and he was without a doubt the least interesting villain of the bunch. Oh, and his boss fight? Objectively the worst in the game. You fight the same robots you've been fighting the whole palace, with a timer, and then you kill him in one hit. Yeah, so the tea is, palace looks and sounds great, but that's really it.

7. Mementos Depths / Prison of Sloth

From this point on, I had very few problems with any of the palaces. As the final dungeon of the game, I felt that this one had definitely had adequate build-up but, as many others seem to say, didn't quite live up to the other palaces. For one, the design and soundtrack was much less interesting (though I guess this can be forgiven, as it's Mementos) and it was over pretty quickly in the end. But I really did enjoy those pressure plate puzzles for some reason and it was pretty cool to go around the velvet room and save all your pals before the final fight, so I just kind of liked this one. Not much to say here other than that it was really good, but the others were better.

6. Kaneshiro’s Bank of Gluttony

While it was fairly difficult to rank Kaneshiro's palace this low, considering it has the awakening of my favourite character, thinking about the palace as a whole compared to the others is what did it. The bank motif? Really cool! Seems inevitable for what is fundamentally a heist game and pulls it off really well. And that soundtrack is easily one of the best tracks in the game. The palace itself is split vaguely into two main sections, the main bank and the vault. The bank section is mostly pretty fun and well-paced, but the palace starts to get just a little bit iffy when the vault section kicks off. The idea is cool, but most of the second half of the palace feels a bit like padding, which becomes a little repetitive overtime. These really are minor gripes though, I gotta stress that, because I genuinely enjoyed this palace for the most part. Something else I enjoyed was Kaneshiro himself and his role in the story. Out of all the palace owners in the game, Kaneshiro felt the most like a true archetypal Bond villain and it does feel awesome to take him on as the phantom thieves are finally starting to get their feet off the ground. On top of that, you've got Makoto joining the team, which makes this one a real treat character-wise. In conclusion, I want Makoto to step on me.

5. Madarame’s Museum of Vanity

This one really did have a tough act to follow. Being the second palace you take on (as well as the awakening of my ,,,, second favourite character), I remember how impressed I was the first time around with how cool the visuals are in this palace. The soundtrack to the palace is generally fairly unremarkable, but very calming and surreal which definitely fit the setting. This palace definitely feels the most trippy out of the bunch, placing you in odd gold-plated mazes and endless corridors plastered with distorted paintings and tripwires to constantly make sure you're paying attention. This palace really does feel like you’ve been placed inside the mind of a deluded artist, even if the game’s attempts to make Madarame seem despicable only really serve to highlight how awful the previous palace owner, Kamoshida, is in comparison. This isn’t to say Madarame isn’t a trashbag, it just becomes obvious that the game is trying hard to make you hate him. That aside, Madarame’s palace provides a welcome challenge and effectively build upon what you learned in the first palace without overwhelming the player, all the while not compromising on the creative, stunning visuals. The ending pay-off with Madarame’s showdown, while a satisfying conclusion to Yusuke’s main character arc, provides a boss fight that is over a little too quickly, though that’s kind of just nitpicking at that point. All in all, a solid dungeon from start to finish.

4. Futaba’s Tomb of Wrath

Without a doubt the most emotionally charged palace in the game, this dungeon is a unique experience unlike anything else you’ll find in the game. Instead of taking down a despicable villain or giving a certain prosecutor a push in the right direction, you’re instead helping to heal the heart of a traumatised girl, who requested herself for her heart to be stolen. You’re reaching the halfway point during this palace, so it’s a brilliant change of pace from the dickholes you’ve been stealing the hearts of up to this point. The game truly makes you feel genuine sympathy for Futaba and seeing her recovery slowly but steadily take place over the game really tugs on the heartstrings. As for the palace itself, the game takes its love of ambiguous metaphors and cranks up the dial, giving the player an interesting but oddly melancholy setting in the form of an Egyptian pyramid. The background music for this palace is perfect to help accentuate this, as the soundtrack works with the visuals to make you just feel a bit sad. The puzzles are well thought out and never overstay their welcome, the layout of the palace is consistently unique and fun to traverse and the ending boss is one of the most creative, high-stakes battles in Persona 5. And while Futaba’s awakening wasn’t my favourite, it’s great to see her finally face her demons and accept that her mother’s death wasn’t her fault. But most of all, this palace reminds you that you should never get too comfortable when playing Persona 5, as the tables could turn at any minute and suddenly make you care about the person you’re changing the heart of.

3. Kamoshida’s Castle of Lust

Kamoshida is arguably the biggest scumbag you take on in Persona 5, so it makes a lot of sense that his palace is one of the most satisfying to undertake. The castle acts as the perfect starting dungeon, teaching you the ropes without too much hand-holding and providing you with simple but visually interesting palace to boot. Before the game drags you into its grandiose main plot, you start with a much smaller scale, but equally despicable villain that you immediately know you have to deal with. And on top of that, each character introduction is seamless and fits perfectly in with the narrative. The puzzles here are simple enough to be basically harmless and each area of the castle you navigate changes things up to keep it unique while teaching you the inner workings of the palaces you’ll be taking down for the rest of the game. As for the first boss, the build-up feels perfect as the tension amps up and reaches boiling point as you send your first calling card. Oh, and Kamoshida’s boss design himself as this horrifying, weird lust demon definitely sets you up for what’s ahead. Great as a beginning act, but also a heckin solid dungeon in its own right. Plus, I’m a sucker for castles, so I might be a little biased here.

2. Niijima’s Casino of Jealousy

I’ll be honest with you, I think a casino is one of the most awesome ideas for a dungeon I’ve ever heard of in a JRPG. And everything about this one is near enough perfect. The reveal that you’ll be targeting the person who’s been interrogating you for the whole game, the link back to the very starting cutscene, the tension mounting as you desperately try to work out who the traitor is, Makoto’s emotional turmoil as she wrestles with the ethics of targeting her own sister. Story-wise, this is totally perfect. And the dungeon itself? Definitely the most consistently unique in the whole game. Each floor you traverse in the casino offers something new and interesting for you to work around, from the rigged dice games to the dark labyrinth and the battle arena trial (not to mention the whole ‘collect enough coins to proceed’ thing reminded me way too much of Sonic Adventure and for some reason, I’m putting that down as a good thing). Whims of Fate is a perfect soundtrack, because it totally fits the atmosphere and also it’s a bop and I love it to pieces. And the palace wraps itself up neatly in a little bow with a boss fight that totally kicks arse. Sae Niijima starts the battle by, of course, rigging the game against you. But once her cheating facade falls away, the true battle begins and she morphs into a weird, distorted mech thing that takes heavy inspiration from Makoto’s persona too. Basically, it’s cool. And I love it.

1. Shido’s Cruiser of Pride

This is likely to be a controversial choice for the best palace in the game, as it’s generally agreed among most fans that Shido’s palace was a bit slightly rubbish. But really, I couldn’t disagree more. Yes, Sae’s palace was the definition of awesome, but something about Shido’s just one-upped it somehow. Of course, your character’s personal connection with this mission that was absent from the other previous palaces gives this one a much more dramatic feel, as you finally get to take on the guy orchestrating everyone’s suffering (if you don’t count good ol’ Optimus Prime from the final palace) and it’s as satisfying as it needs to be. The soundtrack is suitably epic and lends itself well as a precursor to the finale and exploring the cruiser is both intriguing and enjoyable throughout, as you navigate each section of this bloated paradise filled with rich arseholes. But at the same time, the whole Noah’s Ark thing with Shido only saving those willing to submit to him makes this palace as chilling as it is visually stunning. For me, this was a brilliant dungeon beginning to end, as collecting ‘letters of recommendation’ from each of Shido’s cognitive allies allows for a deeper insight into Shido as a character, but also builds you up nicely to the palace’s climax. Plenty of nice character moments and the boss fight, while not the best in the game, was still a strong point. Oh and yeah, I actually really liked the rat puzzles. The puzzles everyone seems to hate? Thought they provided a nice amount of challenge and never really felt like they were dragging on for hugely long. But what really peaked this palace on top of all the others was the encounter with Mr. Pancakes towards the end. Akechi was a brilliantly crafted character throughout his stint in the game and his arc had a fitting conclusion before you finally take on Shido. I was mega happy with this palace and honestly, it was the one cemented this game as one of my big faves.

Phan Cam: Forceful, aren’t we?

>The Castle of Lion on Planet Arus. We came here to investigate how we can steal the heart of a cadet who has serious doubts in the current leader of a certain group of pilots of giant robot lions.

Whoa! It’s huge!

And I thought my father’s building was this grand.

Or the Diet Building.

Or even the Imperial Palace.

Either way, it’s where are next target is.

I’ve already input Daigo’s name and the Castle of Lions into the Metaverse Navigator. It’s a hit alright.

It just pisses me off how he treats this Daniel kid. From what I’ve heard, the current leader of the Voltron Force as been through hell and back. 'specially after it was announced that he has some kind of illness.

Ann: What kind of illness?

Ryuji: Dunno. The current Force members, the former members, Ambassador Coran, and even the king and queen are choosen’ to remain silent 'bout it.

Akechi: Futaba, can’t you hack into their database to find out what it is?

I could do that...

But then their own tech guy would know right away and we’d most likely be caught.

I guess we wouldn’t want that. All we can do now is try and get Daigo off Daniel’s back. We know the where and the who, now we just need the what.

Ann: Well, he clearly doesn’t like Daniel and probably wants to do away with him. Maybe death row?

Nav: Conditions have not been met.

Makoto: I don’t think it’s that obvious. The request said he has great admiration for Vince, the pilot of the Green Lion. Maybe a temple devoted to him?

Nav: Conditions have not been met.

Ryuji: He’s an Arielian. Maybe he says this place as something from his home planet.

Nav: Not enough information.

Akechi: If it’s saying that, we must be close. Is there any place of interest on Ariel that Daigo might like?

>We thought for a moment... Nothing.

Yusuke: Hold on! I think I have an idea?

Ryuji: What’s up?

Yusuke: I’ve heard that there’s another cadet here on Arus. He’s hopeful to pilot the Red Lion. He’s also a huge fan of Voltron and once proclaimed that he would become Voltron’s ‘sidekick’.

Futaba: I’ve heard of him... Isn’t he the other cadet with a distortion?

Ren: I don’t think we need to target him. Anyway, what’s the plan?

>Yusuke reaches into his back and takes out the sketchbook he got for Christmas. He flips through the pages and finds what he’s looking for... A perfect sketching of Voltron.

Yusuke: I think it wouldn’t hurt to bribe him a little for what we need to know.

Makoto: That sound like a good idea, Yusuke.

Thank you.

>Yusuke then turns to the castle.

Yusuke: Now from what I’ve heard, this cadet and his mentor leave the castle for a stroll around the grounds around this time. He should be out right about... Now.

>A door on the castle opens and two people come out.

Yusuke: Wish me luck.

Good luck, Yusuke.

>With that, Yusuke gets close to the two people.

I can’t believe. I still can’t believe it. I know I’ve been here for some months now, but I still can’t believe I’m here. And I get to be part of the famous Voltron.

Easy there, kid. I know you’re excited, but you still have some ways to go. And the others are still a little reluctant around you.

Dudley: True, a long time ago, I tried to get rid of Daniel, Vince, and Princess Larmina out of pure envy. But I’ve matured now... I think.

Lance: ... Baby steps.

Yusuke: Excuse me! You wouldn’t by any chance be Lance of the Voltron Force and Cadet Dudley, would you?

Lance: Who wants to know?

Yusuke: Just a fan. I have a gift for you. Actually, it’s for Dudley.

Dudley: Really? Okay, what is it?

>Yusuke shows Dudley the picture.

Dudley: (impressed) Whoa! That’s a really good sketch of Voltron.

Lance: (a bit suspicious) Yeah, a little too good... What’s the catch?

Yusuke: Well, it’s about the other cadet who’s with you.

Dudley: You mean Daigo? Oh, don’t get me started. That guy’s a total jerk. He actually thought I wasn’t good enough for this team just because I'm like Daniel.

Yusuke: Like Daniel?

Lance: Captain Daniel used to think that he was just some kid who was lucky enough to get on this ride. But we all know that’s not true. Danny Boy’s actually a valued part of this team.

Dudley: Too bad Daigo just can’t say the same thing. In fact, the other day, I overheard him saying that Vince should be the leader of the Voltron Force rather than Daniel. Especially after-

Lance: I think that’s quite enough.

Dudley: Oh, come on, Lance, even you think that he might be a bit hard on the guy.

Lance: ... Okay, you made your point clear.

Yusuke: He does sound a bit obsessed with Vince. It sort of makes me wonder what Daigo sees this castle as. From what I’ve heard, it reminds him of a place on his home world. Can you think of any place?

Dudley: Well... There’s the forge.

Yusuke: The forge.

Lance: It’s the place Voltron was created... Why do you ask?

>Lance was now really suspicious and Yusuke is in trouble. I quickly take out my phone and send him a text. His phone rings.

(answering his phone) Oh! It’s the party I came with. They’re wondering where I am. I guess I better go. Good bye.

>With that, he leaves.

Dudley: What a weirdo. But he did give us a nice gift.

Lance: (still suspicious) Yeah, a little too nice... Dudley, why don’t you head back inside?

Dudley: Already? Okay, I can hang this picture up in my room while I’m at it... If I can find room with my posters of Voltron.

>With that, Dudley heads back inside the castle.

Lance: (on his Voltcom) Hey guys, there’s something I have to say...

>Back with us...

Yusuke: Thank you. I thought I was done for.

Ren: You’re welcome.

Haru: We have what we need. Let’s see if it works... The Voltron Forge.

Nav: Results found.

It’s a hit!

Way to go, Inari!

Ryuji: Next stop: Daigo’s Palace.

?????: Daigo’s what now?

Phantom Thieves: !

Nav: Beginning navigation.

>The familiar red waves passes over us. When it was over, the Castle of Lions had been replaced by something similar. It looked like an iron works place. But it still had some features of the castle, including the seal of Arus... But that’s not important right now.

This can’t be good.

What was your first guess?

>We were face to face with the Voltron Force, both former and current.

Lance: I thought this was an odd party. But the Phantom Thieves? Yes, we know who you are.

Then you must know why we’re here.

I’m more concerned about what happened to the castle. What is going on here?

This? This is how the future pilot of the Yellow Lion sees this place in his distorted mind.

No way! I know Daigo can be a bit doubtful of Daniel and is a total fanboy of Vince, but he’s not distorted.

I dunno. They guy was practically worshiping Vince since they first met.

I wouldn’t say he’s worshiping me... Okay, maybe a little.

A little?

King Keith: Either way, we can’t let you target one of our cadets.

>They ready their weapons.

Seriously!? The proof of why we have to do it is right there.

I don’t think it’s that simple, Panther.

Don’t be so sure about. Look.

>Four Shadows that look like blacksmiths came out.

Shadow 1: I thought we heard thieves.

Shadow 2: Hold on. Why are the Voltron Force and Lord Vince here with them?

Queen Allura: It’s not what you think.

Shadow 3: Wait... It’s the Unworthy One!

>He was pointing at Daniel.

Daniel: Me?

Shadow 4: It’s bad enough that these thieves are here, but they have sided with the Unworthy One? Now they have gone too far! Men, let’s get him!

>The four of them begin approaching Daniel with hostile intent.

King Keith: (his sword pointed at them) Stay back! If you wish to hurt Daniel, you’ll have to get through me.

Shadow 1: Step aside, Your Majesty. The Unworthy One must die to preserve the purity of the Voltron Force.

I think we can handle that ourselves, thanks.

Shadow 2: Fine! You wish to defy the Foreman? Then die, traitors!

>The four Shadow change shape.

Alright! If we can’t fight the Voltron Force, this is even better. Oracle?

I’m on it. Persona!

Pidge: (surprised) Whoa!

Hunk: Holy...

>Necronomicon scans the Shadows.

Oracle: It looks like they’re all weak to Ice. Inari, show us if you can victorious in one day.

I shall not disappoint you. Persona!

>I change Personas.

Joker: Persona!

Skull: I’m in too. Persona!

Queen: Count me in as well. Persona!

>The Ippon-Dataras all used Tarukaja on each other.

Skull: No sweat, we’ve got something better.

Fox: That’s true.

>Goemon uses Masukukaja, I defend, Captain Kidd uses Matarukaja, and Johanna uses Marakukaja.

Queen: That should hold us for now.

Ippon-Datara 1: We’ll see about that.

>Ippon-Datara 1 uses Rampage. Me and Fox dodge it and Skull and Queen were strong enough to withstand the attack. The others simply use Sledgehammer which didn’t do much. Didn’t even make us Dizzy.

Fox: Goemon, strike!

>Goemon uses Mabufula. It knocks all but one down. Goemon then uses Bufula on the remaining one and knocks him down.

Fox: Everyone, with me!

>After the attack, the Ippon-Dataras was still standing. Sui-Ki also uses Mabufula. Only two of them were knocked down. Sui-Ki tries to use Bufula on one of the standing ones, but it missed.

Skull: Relax, you guys, I got this. Let’s go, Captain!

>Captain Kidd uses Bad Beat. The two down Ippon-Dataras was gone, but the standing ones remain. Johanna uses Mafreila. It caused some significant damage.

Ippon-Datara 1: Now you’re gonna get it.

Ippon-Datara 2: No one enters the forge and lives!

>The first Ippon-Datara uses Sledgehammer on me. It successfully made me Dizzy. The second one did the same with Skull. He too become Dizzy.

Fox: Hold on, Joker!

>Fox uses an Alert Capsule on me. I was cured.

Joker: Thanks.

>Sui-Ki uses Mabufula and knocks down the two remaining Ippon-Dataras.

Daniel: Hey! If you’re going to attack like you did before, let me in on the action.

Queen: I don’t think that’s a wise decision.

Daniel: Come on. I can fight, too. Watch this.

WAIT!

King Keith: Daniel, stop!

>It was too late. Daniel’s claws were out. But despite being down... one of the Ippon-Dataras Counters his attack.

Daniel: What!?

Queen: We tried to warn you.

Daniel: (getting angry) No, I can do this!

>Suddenly, something happened. We saw to our horror... Daniel’s eyes were glowing purple.

Vince: It’s happening again!

Hunk: That means it’s over, right?

Oracle: Hold on! I sense something big coming.

>No doubt. The ground was thundering as a large Shadow blacksmith with a helmet and clipboard arrives.

Large Shadow: Huh! And here I thought they were just slacking off. Fine, if the Voltron Force wants to play favorites with the Unworthy One and these thieves, so be it!

Lance: This looks bad.

Oracle: No doubt about that. Electricity isn’t going to work. Sorry, Skull, you’ll have to sit this one out.

Skull: (down) Crap.

Queen: I’ll sit this one out, too.

Oracle: Right. We might have better luck with Wind attacks.

Mona: Then here I come. Persona!

Oracle: That should be good. And Noir-

Hunk: I don’t have any of those abilities you guys have. But, I think this might help.

Thor: Now you shall suffer!

>Thor attacks Mona. It was super powerful, but thankfully our boosted defense helped him.

Goemon: Let’s do this!

Joker: Right.

>Goemon uses Myraid Slashes. It took some damage. Moloch uses Evil Smile. It missed. Zorro uses Garudyne. It made significant damage. Hunk attacks. It was enhanced by the boost. Thor tries to attack again, but missed Hunk.

Hunk: Guess that thing the samurai guy did is working.

Mona: Okay, give it a good whack!

>Hunk does an attack that’s similar to Assault Dive. It was a technical hit, in fact, it was critical. Thor was now down.

>After the attack, Thor was still up, but now very weak.

>Thor uses Megidolaon. Luckily, we all dodged it. Goemon uses Brave Blade, now Thor was really getting weak. Then, Moloch uses Psiodyne and Thor was gone.

Joker: Thanks for the assist.

Hunk: No prob.

Skull: Hey, the Shadow dropped something!

>Skull went over to where the Shadow was. It was his clipboard. We notice something on it.

Skull: Sweat! A map of the Palace.

Oracle: Only half of it. I don’t see the Treasure here.

>Oracle get’s closer to the Palace.

Oracle: I think it’s somewhere right over...

Pidge: HEY, WATCH IT!

>Pidge and Hunk quickly pull Oracle away as something that looks like sound waves blasted from the Palace and hit where Oracle was just standing.

Yikes! I forgot about that.

Pidge: That... would be the Lion’s Roar.

Skull: The what now?

Crow: I do believe that’s one of the castle’s defense system.

Pidge: I see you and tech girl (Oracle) know about it... I guess my work hasn’t gone unnoticed on Earth.

Oracle: Pretty much.

Queen: If that’s true, this place wouldn’t be a safe place to talk.

King Keith: Right. We better find a safe place... How do we even get out of here.

>We returned to the real world. Inside the Castle of Lions, we explained our situation to the Voltron Force.

King Keith: I see. But I’m still not so sure about this. The Lions sense things like they’re alive and decide who can pilot them. We have no idea how giving Daigo a change of heart will effect that.

Makoto: True. What we’re doing is a big risk. But as archaeologist, Randall Ascot, always says, “No risk, no glory.” Maybe it will effect his connection with the Yellow Lion, maybe it won’t. We won’t know unless we try.

King Keith: ...

Queen Allura: Keith?

King Keith: It’s just... It’s just a really heard decision.

Queen Allura: Making decisions is one of the harder things of being a ruler.

King Keith: I know we all saw that even someone descendant of Lion Riders isn’t above having such distortion inside them. But we know all of the good the Phantom Thieves have done, and if they wish to remove that distortion... I suppose I will allow it. What about you, Allura?

Queen Allura: It does sound like a big risk. I no longer have my father to guide me since he said I need to become my own ruler. However, I don’t think it would be wise to let Daigo go on like that. If he really needs a change of heart to be more confident in others, especially Daniel, I too will allow it.

Haru: So, you’ll let us do it?

Queen Allura: Not quite yet. The final decision... Is really Hunk’s. Since Daigo is to become the pilot of the Yellow Lion, Hunk get’s the last say in all of this. Hunk, what do you think we should do?

Hunk: I think... I think... We should let them do it.

Vince: But there’s still something bothering me.

Pidge: What is it, Vince?

Vince: The request said that Daigo might try something to get Daniel thrown off the Voltron Force... If he is, how will he do it?

Pidge: (looking down) I think I know.

Daniel: What is it?

Pidge: While I was examining you, I kinda... Left your file open and... Daigo took a peek inside.

Daniel: (shocked) You mean...

He knows about the Haggarium infection.

Vince: You know about it?

Futaba: The look in Daniel’s eyes pretty much says it all. I’m surprised you didn’t end up like Sven.

Daniel: You have Pidge to thank for that. Those pills you saw Larmina give me? They keep the infection at bay.

Pidge: At least until I can find a more permanent cure.

Hunk: I’m sure you’ll find it, little buddy.

Pidge: I know. But I’m in a real rut. This infection is tougher than I thought. I even tried creating a new branch of science to help, but it’s not so good if only one is working it.

Actually, I think we know some people who can help with that.

Pidge: (curious) You do?

Ryuji: Some really good friends of ours. Really great scientists. Young, but bright. They actually have a friend who kinda has the same problem as Daniel.

Daniel: He was infected as well?

You could say that.

Ren: We could let them know and see if they can help.

Pidge: You’d do that? ... Thanks. If you there’s anything you’d like us to do in return...

You’re letting us carry out this heist without a hitch. That should be thanks enough.

Daniel: So Daigo knows I’m infected. I think I know how he can use that.

Princess Larmina: How can he? We still accept you. Even Black still accepts you as long as you remember your medicine.

Daniel: Yeah, you guys accept me... But will the public accept me?

Vince: (surprised) He wouldn’t.

Daniel: If it means you get to be the leader of the Voltron Force and pilot the Black Lion, he would.

Morgana: You mean... No one but us know about the infection?

Daniel: That’s right. If everyone else knew that the leader of the Voltron Force has inside of him the esscence of one of the most evil witches in the universe, there would be riots with the Galaxy Alliace. Even the people of Arus would revolt against Keith and Allura for harboring someone who might as well be a Robeast. Or worse... The reincarnation of Lotor or even Zarkon.

Princess Lamina: But that’s not what you are, Daniel. You’re you. It’s what we like about you.

Princess Larmina: It’s what I like about you.

>Daniel blushed a bit... and smiled.

We’ll do whatever we can, Daniel san. Don’t worry.

Daniel: ... Thanks, guys.

Vince: I just hope we can soon.
